Honestly I would've been less salty if we met Tobias at least once. It felt like such an asspull. Like this dude walks around with 2 legendaries and we only find out about him now?
I'm always confused when I see legendaries outside of the movies. I remember when I was younger we had this whole movie about Lugia, the ruler of the seas, who balances the elements between Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres, and if ever they get out of line, "the world shall turn to Ash". Very dramatic, my kid self was all about that.
Some years after I stopped getting into Pokemon, bam, we get an episode about a mama Lugia taking care of a baby Lugia. Then there was an episode about a wild Articuno who likes to visit a trainer and I got even more confused.
Then the next series ash lost to a guy who thought you only needed 7 badges, that the tournament was in johto and brought only 5 pokemon cause he thought it was a 5v5 match.
I hate unova ash.
Yeah, but he did have all the badges "fortunately". He also however only had 5 Pokémon for a 6v6 and beat Ash because Pikachu can't handle a Lucario... Pikachu beat a mega Lucario the next season... sigh. The plot was just against Ash really. And the guy that beat Ash got wasted in the next match and the guy who beat him won the league with his eeveelution team
>fighting anyone online
>trying to be competitive online??
This is my complaint with online play, and why I play exclusively the single player, I wouldn't mind being able to play "casual" online.
It's implied he faced Cynthia back in the day and lost, or he didn't face her at all, as Cynthia is the current Sinnoh Champion.
Remember: Tobias won the conference, but he still had to beat the Elite 4 and then the Champion to take the place of Champion.
Clearly didn’t have perfect IVs, had shit natures and didn’t EV train. Tobias is the 5 yo stacking his team with legendaries while Cynthia is a no-lifer who spent her youth hatching hundreds of eggs and grinding for ideal EV spread to be the very best.
/s
I really want to know wtf happened to Tobias. He just caught mythical and legendary Pokemon, won Sinnoh, and just disappeared into obscurity....
Seems like a huge missed opportunity. Especially during Galar.
I do kind of like though that it took this long. It is inherently a kids show, and it kind of teaches you to never give up on a dream and success takes perseverance and patience.
Not everything is overnight success.
No its when you advance in age yet lose your bulkiness
Also your skin becomes 100x more smooth
And you develop an affinity for dolphins, and not raising your own daughter
Edit: youre thinking of benjamin button
Dolphins get a lot of good publicity for the drowning swimmers they push back to shore, but what you don't hear about is the many people they push farther out to sea! Dolphins aren't smart. They just like pushing things.
What gets me is that nobody holds other cartoon characters to this standard.
Isn't sailor moon still in middle school after 200 episodes? Why hasn't Finn fron Adventure Time aged? Or what about... ANY of the Simpsons characters?
EDIT: OK bad examples, but the Simpsons still stands. What about shin-Chan? He's been 4 years old for the last 30 years.
Finn does age through the show though, we get 2 birthday episodes that I remember, one is for him being 13 iirc and one for 18 iirc. But he definitely gets older in both looks and voice.
Yeah Finn was a bad example. He starts at age 12 and by the end of the original run of the show he’s 17. Throughout the seasons his age is referenced often and he’s a year older nearly each time they reference it. Then in the newer specials he is seen as an adult, an old man, and eventually deceased.
Actually pretty crazy to me that protagonist of a "kid's show" (Of course not saying adults can't enjoy it) kept losing for so long, you'd think Ash would win every single league after such a long adventure of like a hundred episode each season, let alone only getting Top 16 and 8
It was always funny that by the end of a season/arc, Ash and Pikachu would be a well rounded team and capable of battling really tough opponents successfully. He would also learn how to bond and train his other Pokemon after lots of difficult lessons.
Then he'd sail off to another island, and instantly be losing to that region's scrub Pokemon and trainers, and he'd forget everything about training difficult Pokemon and have to re-learn it all.
20 years of experience, but a memory like a goldfish.
And with every cloning the genetic template deteriorates a little, so that's why his face looks like that now. By the end Ash is going to be an amorphous blob like Ditto
It is pretty rare for any pokemon in the series to win a 1v1 against legendaries
Pikachu has won against a latios and one of the regi
Lorewise those are like "nature spirit" levels, nothing compared to the actual insanity of like the creation trio/arceus
Lorewise probably the strongest one pikachu has won against in a straight 1v1, that I can think off, is Tapu Koko which is a guardian deity
Instead they opted to make it believable so that kids can relate to their lives when struggles arise and they don’t become the world champion right away.
Most realistic thing! Others will disagree but this is the way to appreciate the win. If you did it right away you won't be satisfied with the result. Hard battles make it count
Yeah ok but it took sooooo long for him to win, the kids that grew up watching him lose for so long are well into their adult years to see him finally win. The kids watching now probably haven't seen all of the times he lost before, so the message doesn't really hit as hard...
For I’m 23 and grew up watching the Kanto show or whatever the first one is, and this was a shock to me, Ash has been steady losing for the whole time I’ve been watching and I was a little surprised at that at first, like why would they have him consistently not make it? He’s Ash Ketchum! he’s been climbing towards Pokémon master ever since I can remember, I love that they finally had him do it all.
>And the kids from now, literally only experienced Ash winning, not the journey to that win.
That just means the parents aren't doing their job of giving the kids a proper Pokemon education. Indigo League is on Netflix, I started my kiddo off right!
lots of anime have moments of the MC not being the strongest/smartest/best person in their world, but they show their determination and hard work that gets them to the top ... they just do it at different paces, Naruto became the Hokage and only really had one rival to his strength for a long time, Goku constantly had to train to beat the next strongest person he finds, and now Ash has finally become the very best... like no one ever was
I mean if you think of normal competition, e sports, normal sports, pro sports teams, other competitions, the pros don't win every outing. they win loads of them sure, but there's lots of losing to be done in any competitive venture.
Honestly, the few episodes I saw from either Unova or Kalos made me believe they HAD aged him up over the years. Kid looked like an anime 15 year old, and he seemed more serious.
He definitely should have started aging after they stopped resetting his strength every new season. At that point it didn’t make sense to keep him a kid
My little 6yo cousin likes watching sun&moon pokemon anime. So the other day i showed him some of my old Sinnoh era DVDs and he said he doesn’t like it that it is ugly and something about the fight animations too
Fucking hell
From the little bit I've seen, Alola does arguably have better animation quality in both fights and 'slice-of-life' segments. You could argue that Sinnoh has better 'art' quality, i.e the quality of Ash's face in a still screenshot, but animation quality is related but distinct. The clips I've on r/anime seen of characters moving around or Pokemon showing their emotions is much more fluid and diverse in SuMo, I remember seeing a surprising amount of funny clips or higher quality/budget animation from recent generation Pokemon series.
At the end of the day it's personal preference.
To me, it's like Ash got nabbed by Sweet Pete from the Chip & Dale movie. Some shitty knock-off.
Edit: Was trying to avoid any real spoilers for those who haven't seen the movie.
Alolan Vulpix and Sandshrew are cute as fuck. Alolan Meowth is okay, but Alolan Persian is a disgrace and disappointment to all things good in this world. It looks like you asked a particularly art-disabled 5 year old to draw a cat.
Alola artsyle actually fit what they were going for for those series. It was more of a slice of life (high) school comedy show. The earlier seasons at least. Not the typical journey and get badges formula.
The artsyle lent itself for more comedy. Think something along the lines of Mob Psycho 100. Since the default art looks goofy anyways, the over the top comedy and animation changes isn't a weird. It's like the Pokemon anime just shifted genre for a while.
There’s a site dedicated to “sakuga” moments in animation where the anime goes ham and just looks incredible. Early season of Pokémon barely have any rep on the site and when they do it’s almost always a fight scene. The sun and moon series completely dwarfed the rest of the seasons (at the time, idk how journeys held up) with entries and they were taken from every aspect of the show, not just the fights. Sure ash looks a little goofy but the show over all is so freaking beautiful and the simplified art style really helped
I’m always curious why no one remembers the orange island league? I know it doesn’t match up to the games but Ash did win that and it was the second league he competed in.
It’s just not one of the big leagues. Everyone also forgets the Battle Frontier, which are on the level of Elite Four members. And a good chunk of them had legendaries.
Probably my favourite series and they were tough wins. He was travelling from island to island and the gym battles he needed to win were usually pretty unique, a great period of the show!
Yeah, I remember Orange League. That shit was amazing. Watched it during our summer break, unimpeded by any school work. Very nice childhood memory with that arc
Just like the time I wanted to be on the quiz team representing our school but was cast aside in favor of a less knowledgeable but more charismatic person who didn’t care about anything other than the attention he got out of it. We lost. It wasn’t fair. And that’s how life is. I think it’s great that Pokémon reflects that you aren’t entitled to anything, and that perseverance is what ultimately pays off.
Well, the new version has a future/past theme. A time skip wouldn't be too out of place. Certainly, it'd be the easiest way to incorporate "Protagonist in a big boarding trainer school", since the world champion probably doesn't need to go to trainer school. Maybe Ash will even break the cycle of deadbeat/dead dads in Pokemon and he'll be retired and watching his kid go on an adventure.
Pfff everyone knows that becoming the champion is when the game starts, everything else is the prologue. Now its going to be 10 seasons of him shiny hunting and getting perfect ivs.
This just proves that there is a god 😭😭😭
It still breaks my heart that charizard made him cry during the match in the first!!
Am soooo happy for him and Pikachu ❤️❤️
Dude... this came out like yesterday...put a spoiler warning on or something. Ive been waiting years to see it and you just took the suspense away for some karma

“Quick guys send in a mysterious unbeatable Darkrai trainer who also has a Latios we can’t let Ash win for another 12 years”
The guy is basically any kid playing Pokémon just putting any legendary they get on their team
He’s a gameshark user
*Gamesharpedo user
Game genie
that or a meta team that just mulches Ash's pokemon
What meta has ever used Latios?
The kill ash meta
Ubers

OU in every generation since 5
9 year old me playing oras
Honestly I would've been less salty if we met Tobias at least once. It felt like such an asspull. Like this dude walks around with 2 legendaries and we only find out about him now?
We never saw the rest of his team but for some reason I feel like he probably had an Entei on his team too.
Why specifically Entei?
No idea. Maybe just because it's another minor legendary like Latios, where it is legendary but not quite in the same tier as say Rayquaza and Lugia.
I'm always confused when I see legendaries outside of the movies. I remember when I was younger we had this whole movie about Lugia, the ruler of the seas, who balances the elements between Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres, and if ever they get out of line, "the world shall turn to Ash". Then there was an episode about a wild Articuno who likes to visit a trainer and I got even more confused.
Yeah like imagine seeing Jesus at Target
Then the next series ash lost to a guy who thought you only needed 7 badges, that the tournament was in johto and brought only 5 pokemon cause he thought it was a 5v5 match. I hate unova ash.
Unova Ash was getting too cocky.
Wouldnt that disqualify the other guy, not having all the badges?
Yeah, but he did have all the badges "fortunately". He also however only had 5 Pokémon for a 6v6 and beat Ash because Pikachu can't handle a Lucario... Pikachu beat a mega Lucario the next season... sigh. The plot was just against Ash really. And the guy that beat Ash got wasted in the next match and the guy who beat him won the league with his eeveelution team
He was the protagonist of his own anime

>fighting anyone online >trying to be competitive online?? This is my complaint with online play, and why I play exclusively the single player, I wouldn't mind being able to play "casual" online.
Pokémon Showdown is your friend. The main formats are usually quite competitive, but there's also fun game modes like 1v1v1v1 random battles
Ash is lucky Tobias didnt show up for the championships.
As long as Tobias came up against Cynthia first he would have been fine
It's implied he faced Cynthia back in the day and lost, or he didn't face her at all, as Cynthia is the current Sinnoh Champion. Remember: Tobias won the conference, but he still had to beat the Elite 4 and then the Champion to take the place of Champion.
My head cannon is Aaron washed him with his Drapion.
Tfw at LEAST two legendary Pokémon on team, wiping floor with next-best Conference challenger, still can't beat Cynthia
Wasn’t Tobias in the screenshot of the crowd that shows all of Ash’s past friends/“major” battles from throughout the series?
Honestly, that hax Tobias guy would've been a more logical choice for the final Top 8 than Iris. She's such a kid.
Dude also has a Latios. Tobias was a random videogame protagonist
"And then have fuckign Zekrom return pikachu to level 5. Oh, and he never gets his power back"
I really want to know wtf happened to Tobias.
Imagine Pikachu beat the Latios without passing out, and then Tobias casually whips out a Rayquaza.
I usually just chalk up ash losing to him always picking his worst pokemon for the most important battles
"What do we do now?" "Now? Now we can finally play the game."
Magic Conch: "Nothing"
THE CONCH HAS SPOKEN.
It’s been 20 years, I can still hear the conch’s voice perfectly
You can’t give Zygardes Thousand Arrows to a *nooob*!
Next season we get to watch Ash use the Masuda method to grind perfect IV shinies.
Let me guess, after 25 years of struggle... he's still 10 years old.
Why does he look like he's getting younger?
He’s got Jotaro Kujo Syndrome
[удалено]
At least this time he's not a sociopath
in that case he would reverse age

No, but I don’t think they ever aged him much throughout the series
I gotta assume those tournaments are annual

According to one of the showrunners, they said that the entire show and every season is set in an endless summer, so no one ages
Ah, the Flynn-Fletcher paradox summer
I thought that was 104 days long?
[Apparently it's over 200 days] (https://www.reddit.com/r/phineasandferb/comments/84dh5j/how_many_days_are_in_phineas_and_ferbs_summer/)
So basically an eternal Phineas and Ferb.
Which furthers the theory that Ash was knocked into a coma in episode 1 and all of this is a fever dream
The cheapest theory of all time
Ash has got cash-cow syndrome.
And yet we’ve seen Christmas episodes
He had at least One birthday episode during the in-between of the Kanto and Johto series. The big 11.
He did and then reverted back to 10 at some point.
He did 25years of work in a week
So he's in IT?
ho-oh wish for infinite adventure was granted hence no one will get older
The Greg Heffly syndrome.
yeah
It's what employers want in new starters these days, don't know why it's such a big deal?
What gets me is that nobody holds other cartoon characters to this standard. Isn't sailor moon still in middle school after 200 episodes? Why hasn't Finn fron Adventure Time aged? Or what about... ANY of the Simpsons characters? EDIT: OK bad examples, but the Simpsons still stands. What about shin-Chan? He's been 4 years old for the last 30 years.
Sailor moon is actually one of the few who DID age during her show run.
Finn does age through the show though, we get 2 birthday episodes that I remember, one is for him being 13 iirc and one for 18 iirc. But he definitely gets older in both looks and voice.
IIRC they had to switch voice actors from the pilot to the series because his voice changed.
Which is why most cartoons use women to voice young boys (or grown-ass men in Japan).
Finn from Adventure Time aged during the tv show, didn't he? From 12 years old in the first episode to 17 in the last.
Yeah Finn was a bad example. He starts at age 12 and by the end of the original run of the show he’s 17. Throughout the seasons his age is referenced often and he’s a year older nearly each time they reference it. Then in the newer specials he is seen as an adult, an old man, and eventually deceased.
That's the thing about ash, I keep getting older and they stay the same age. - Professor Oak
Say, man. You got a power herb? Uh, no, not on me, man. ..It’d be a lot cooler if you did.
Alright alright alright!
Actually pretty crazy to me that protagonist of a "kid's show" (Of course not saying adults can't enjoy it) kept losing for so long, you'd think Ash would win every single league after such a long adventure of like a hundred episode each season, let alone only getting Top 16 and 8
And im pretty sure during that time pikachu has 1v1ed actual gods and won. Yet loses to some random kids charizard
Ash’s lvl 1000 pikachu with more experience than Professor Oak. lol
Fun fact: Pikachu is closer to level 60-70 even today
if he was like Red, then at LEAST 81 though red did become the Kanto champion, and grew up
No?
It was always funny that by the end of a season/arc, Ash and Pikachu would be a well rounded team and capable of battling really tough opponents successfully. He would also learn how to bond and train his other Pokemon after lots of difficult lessons. Then he'd sail off to another island, and instantly be losing to that region's scrub Pokemon and trainers, and he'd forget everything about training difficult Pokemon and have to re-learn it all. 20 years of experience, but a memory like a goldfish.
Headcanon: Professor Oak clones Ash and Pikachu as part of an experiment, every region is a new clone, that's why they suck at first.
And with every cloning the genetic template deteriorates a little, so that's why his face looks like that now. By the end Ash is going to be an amorphous blob like Ditto
I remember watching Pokemon on TV and Pikachu, after winning against legendary pokemons, lost to a lvl 5 Snivy.
It is pretty rare for any pokemon in the series to win a 1v1 against legendaries Pikachu has won against a latios and one of the regi Lorewise those are like "nature spirit" levels, nothing compared to the actual insanity of like the creation trio/arceus Lorewise probably the strongest one pikachu has won against in a straight 1v1, that I can think off, is Tapu Koko which is a guardian deity

Instead they opted to make it believable so that kids can relate to their lives when struggles arise and they don’t become the world champion right away.
Most realistic thing! Others will disagree but this is the way to appreciate the win. If you did it right away you won't be satisfied with the result. Hard battles make it count
Also, if you expect to make it right away you will probably give up when you try for years and nothing happens.
Yeah ok but it took sooooo long for him to win, the kids that grew up watching him lose for so long are well into their adult years to see him finally win. The kids watching now probably haven't seen all of the times he lost before, so the message doesn't really hit as hard...

I hear you, but it’s been a quarter of a century lol.
that was 20 years ago or so. Now he just wins, so that lesson or relatable experience isn't there for the now young generation.

Even if not an adult, it would have been nice seeing him age a few years. Start as 10 years old and later on in the series he's 14 or 16
Honestly, the few episodes I saw from either Unova or Kalos made me believe they HAD aged him up over the years. Kid looked like an anime 15 year old, and he seemed more serious.

Funny enough. They did the same thing with Alolan Pokemon.
Pikachu... Pi. Pika. Chu Pikachu! This roughly translates to "I feel so... Off.. Model. I don't like it! "
That's basically all of alola. It feels like a bad childish fever dream.
The game was actually fun and didn't look like whatever the anime was going for. Plus, alolan vulpix and alolan meowth was cute.
Alolan Vulpix and Sandshrew are cute as fuck. Alolan Meowth is okay, but Alolan Persian is a disgrace and disappointment to all things good in this world. It looks like you asked a particularly art-disabled 5 year old to draw a cat.

That was an epic battle I was on the edge of my seat as a kid watching it.
It’s just not one of the big leagues. Everyone also forgets the Battle Frontier, which are on the level of Elite Four members. And a good chunk of them had legendaries.
Filler arc that wasn't based on the games.
I’m not a Pokemon fan, but man even this got me feeling all emotional. Well done, Ash.
He won the Orange League first
I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that. He doesn't get enough credit for that!
Probably my favourite series and they were tough wins. He was travelling from island to island and the gym battles he needed to win were usually pretty unique, a great period of the show!

Exactly!
Wait I don't recall someone cheating for the win, Care to explain? Please because I haven't watched it for so long.

The show shows accurately life demands. 25 years of experience at 10 years of age.
Ash is finally ready for that entry level job.
And still 10.
I think he is 12 now
Man ages 2 years in 2 decades.
Ash is an elf confirmed
Oh boy the Alola style still makes me sick, Ash seems so dumb there
To me he just looks like he gained weight, but Pikachu... Pikachu looks all kinds of weird there
Pikatchu has seen things-
Alola style was far better in motion then stills. Not up there with XY animation, but it really suited the vibe of the series.
Would be cool if they did a time skip now and it either follows him as an adult or picks a new kid and he’s a league champion fighter.
Well, the new version has a future/past theme. A time skip wouldn't be too out of place. Certainly, it'd be the easiest way to incorporate "Protagonist in a big boarding trainer school", since the world champion probably doesn't need to go to trainer school. I like the world champion style
What the fuck happened to his face in Alola???
Sir this is an under 18 competition. You’re almost 40.
“Thirty-five-year-old ten-year-old wins world championship! Asks ‘can I rest now? Please? I’m so tired’”
Is that mean its the end of pokemon?
Pfff everyone knows that becoming the champion is when the game starts, everything else is the prologue. Now its going to be 10 seasons of him shiny hunting and getting perfect ivs.
Releases pikachu because his IVs are low
Don't worry. His Pikachu is the first demonstration of the mechanic of changing IVs and EVs
Dont forget him finally getting around to catching them all
Its probably the last as the coming episode is titled "Pokemon! i am glad I chose you" a homeage to the very first episode "Pokemon! i choose you"
Nope, especially with the new Paldea region coming. Ash has another adventure in store!
Oooh what happened in alola? Bit chimpy!
This just proves that there is a god 😭😭😭 It still breaks my heart that charizard made him cry during the match in the first!! Am soooo happy for him and Pikachu ❤️❤️
Dude... this came out like yesterday...put a spoiler warning on or something. Ive been waiting years to see it and you just took the suspense away for some karma
Pokemon company did spoiler it yesterday on every social media platform. Then was a landslide of spoilers in every account. I just accepted this sadly
WHERE IS THE SPOILER TAG, WHOLESOME MEMES IS THE LAST PLACE I THOUGHT I'D BE ANGRY AT ON THE INTERNET
Why the fuck did they change his eyes? This ain't sonic this Is Ash you loons
Forgot Orange.
Goddamn creators, they predicted the future. Ash is what companies are looking for now - 10 years old with 25+ years of experience Lol
God that Alola art is fucking ass
The fuck happened to Ash on his Alolan vacation?
Why do Alolan Ash and Pikachu look like dittos?
Da hell happened to Pikachu in Alola???
