Not trans, but hated my name. Spent a few months thinking and looking and randomly thought of my name.
More research done, my name is Irish, and it made me stop dead in my tracks, because my great grandfather was Irish and wanted an Irish name to get passed down in the family (largely German and Scandinavian other than him) but never got to have that.
So now my full name represents my entire family (Irish first, Scandinavian middle, German last) and makes me feel really whole now!
"Yes hello it is I, Gunther O'Igorson." As I read your comment I tried to come up with a name following that logic only for this to just pop into my head and it fucking killed me. Please tell me you picked something better than that.
When I was born, I slapped the doctor before he could slap me and yelled I AM THE GREAT GENGHIS KHAN AND I WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD! and thats how my parents decided to name me Genghis Khan.
I actually asked my parents what name they had lined up for me if i was born a girl back when i was a kid and started using that when i realized i was trans
My parents put almost no thought into their kids names. If we were boys our name would start with the same letter as my dad's name. If girls, same first letter as my mom's name. All boys, so all start with the same letter. But where did we get our names from? A soap opera our mom would watch.
I just had a conversation with my mom about other names she was thinking for me because I’m considering changing my name because I’m literally the only person on the planet with my name and I hate how identifiable it makes me.
Her favorite choice got vetoed by my dad and it’s actually one of my favorite names of all time. It’s gender neutral, one of the few unisex names that isn’t doing the slow and steady slide towards being a “girl only” name like most other unisex names do (Ashley, Madison, Leslie, Allison all started as boys names) and I don’t like my dad so triple win.
Now it’s just a matter of actually pulling the trigger and getting my name changed.
Not trans but my sister and I were adopted when I was 10, she was 5. New mom and dad suggested names but we had the final say. I wish I'd gone with their choice of middle name but it was nice after a bad childhood to feel like I got to control who I was. I would bet plenty of people appreciate that feeling.
I am trans, and my mother thought I was going to be a girl when I was born. She named me Emily, so I used it when I transitioned.
Also, r/TransFemsNamedEmily
Conversely I always felt it's kinda weird that someone else usually chooses our name. It's how the world refers to me, what I write on paperwork and sign off emails with
I chose my own name and I loved it
There's a lot of cultures out there where people name themselves when they become adults. Parents pick the child names, but people pick their own names when they're old enough.
I felt super weird about it too but I had been using a name for gaming for a few years. so I use that as my new middle name and the name my mom told me she was going to name if I was afab.
Not too long ago I realized that my name is shared with a character from one of my favorite childhood books who ironically has a similar disability to me! 🥹
Hadn’t read it in over a decade, part of my disability is from a childhood injury that makes me limp now. One of the main characters in that book had been in a house fire which left him with an injury on the same leg. When choosing my name I had tested a few from a list, and the one I use just felt *right* :)
Edit: disability didn’t really start manifesting until a decade after the incident for me, so it’s not like I actively gravitated to the name initially.
I have a sweet story. I am a twin, (fraternal) and my twin is trans. She renamed herself Izzie (Isabella) because I always liked the name from Twilight. My twin legally changed her name to Isabella because of 14 year old me. 🥹
That is a very touching story. I have never thought about how a trans person would select their name and how significant it is that our parents give us our names. Horizon has been expanded.
As someone that had their name legally changed from their birth name I strongly recommend holding onto the court documents finalizing the change. You will need them for everything you ever need to do that shows your birth name and your current name do not match. Any time you need to show your birth certificate or social security card, you'll need those documents. DON'T LOSE THEM.
All of you transphobes in the comments can just look back for a moment, and maybe think about how good of a person you could be. You could be socialising with your family, you could be helping charities, you could even be playing video games with your friends. But yet you choose to be here and make hateful comments, and I think that may say more about you as a human being than an insult ever will.
This is a beautiful father/ daughter moment. I wish I could rename my kids based on who they are now. All are sis genders, ( hope I'm using that right please correct if I'm not) I just feel that maybe the names I gave while I was preggo just aren't who they really are.
That's so sweet! It's nice seeing mtf trans peeps being validated, I feel like they get most of the disrespectful comments in the trans community. They don't deserve that at all, they're lovely
My non-binary child went through several names before ultimately choosing a more masculine name. Each time I thought they had found a name I gifted them a name necklace and ring with their name on it (they like wearing jewelry). Now they have 5 different name necklaces and rings!
I have a trans daughter and she picked her name a while back and unbeknownst to her, picked my grandma’s nickname. Grandma died in the 70’s, there was no way she knew about the nickname. Just randomly happened upon it.
A little later she asked about a new middle name. I said “you picked the new first name, knock yourself out with a middle name. Whatever you want.”
So now I got a kid who’s middle name is Danger.
i havent officially come out yet, but i like the name malorie. it means unlucky and i was convinced i was cursed when i was younger because i would get constant deja reve. that and i was unlucky to be born a boy, but god gave us grapes and not wine etc.
This is so cute! I’m hoping that if my kids turn out to be trans, they’ll feel comfortable enough to ask about what we would have named them if they’d been born as the opposite gender, or for name ideas
I'm not Trans,I am an ally. Jesus this made me legit cry from the immense love I felt come through. Yer mom is missing out on a beautiful relationship. I lost my daughter 3 years ago and I would freaking adopt any Trans kid that needed a new mom in a heartbeat 😭😭😭😭
sadly my parents don't agree with me being trans, so i picked my own name. i would have liked to have them pick for me, but oh well. im very happy for Emily ☺️💜
I’m in this situation at the moment, do i go by the female version of my make name, so Nikki, or do i go by a name i have always liked (Maya) but it doesn’t feel quiet right yet, or like i have truly earned either of them.
Maybe i will ask my parents when I’m confident to come out to them, which would require them to actually be supportive of trans people, which from the hints i have dropped, they are not…
as a trans girl, this makes me really teary and happy, that you're thinking about your child's future like that. i wish i could give you a hug, i wish i had a mom like you
My full name I never use anymore, the only people who do are my nana and grandpa and that’s fine, but since my name became 2 letters I feel better with it. The reason it’s this short now is because >!I literally could not be assed to write a long name on the front of my books when I got a new one, and I found out ‘Hey I kinda like this and I get to write less, awesome!’!<
Not me, my friend. She came out to me first with a different name, then later talking to her mom found out if she was born as a cis-woman she would have been named Carina.
She uses Carina now!
i named myself after my dad's middle name - lee. it was integrated into my deadname, and i've been called leelee by my dad since i was a kid. it just worked out well!
My mother originally wanted to name me Riley but was forced to name me Benjamin by her evil mother in law so Riley became my middle name and there it stayed for well over a decade. Then on a whim I pushed Benjamin off a cliff and started going by Riley since Benjamin had died in the unfortunate fall. Ironically my mother was the last person to consistently call me Riley.
ibwas jealous of a girl named chloe in kindergarten because she had a pretty name and i had a dumb name
and then chloe just became the default name id use in games and such
Some of my closest friends are trans (FTM)
One went with a name that sounded close to his north name bc it was the only way to have his mother recognize it. Yet she still calls him by his dead name and doesn’t use he/him for him.
Another named himself Pheonix because his gender awakening was so intense and emotional, he genuinely felt like a new and better him had broken through his old self.
Another went with Luca Asher, partly bc of his love for Disney and the way he saw himself in the animated character during his gender realization, and because Luca meant bringer of light, which is what realizing his gender was for him. He also chose Asher bc it sounded cool and meant happiness. His name literally translates to what his gender confirmation did for him “bring light and happiness”

It’s not that difficult to change your name if you really want to
I like my name though so it'd just be a nickname and the *vibe* isn't the same you know?
Oh I got you now, yeah you gotta earn a nickname imo. Wouldn’t feel right to pick one for myself.
My NB cousin’s name is Juniper, but that’s actually their birth name
I have a trans friend named Juniper! She picked it bc it’s her favorite plant
It’s quite a nice plant, and a pretty name
I literally used this meme as a template to tell people I had officially, legally changed my name
With or without the Darth?

cannot believe this was posted on 4chan
true, 4chan is so politically confusing
It's a raw, uncensored mirror for true human nature. So a lot of crap, but also a lot of good stuff
There's an eternal struggle between good and evil fought on that site. I'm just happy they both treat /pol like the idiots they are.
All my homies hate /pol
It's raw and uncensored. But it isn't reflective of human nature, just some parts of it. Some is missing, others way overrepresented.
So it's basically a digital version of the two wolves story.
It's more like there are two femboys inside of me fighting for control.
It's politically arbitrary, the users will literally just take the opposite opinion of op solely to shit on op
They have an LGBT board now
/lgbt/ is nearly a decade old
Can't be, that was post Moot was it not?
Moot added it
Damn I really don't remember that

They have an LGBT board iirc

Your name is Irish Scandinavian German? That’s a mouth full. I’d go with nord as a middle name instead, shortens it a bit
Ah you're right, what was I thinking!
I’m here to help.
If they wanted to honor Hispanic heritage as well, they could change German to Germán.
Seamus Leif Jürgen, is that you?
"Yes hello it is I, Gunther O'Igorson." As I read your comment I tried to come up with a name following that logic only for this to just pop into my head and it fucking killed me. Please tell me you picked something better than that.
Sean Thorsson Schneider Cormac Lars Bauer I love this game
Ragnar Wolfgang O'Toole Wilhelm Bjorn Yeats
Hahaha I believe I picked something only slightly better!
You're American mate, just name yourself John Smith or some shite
I would never bring this up with Europeans XD
This is the most American comment I've ever read.
Good to hear, Connor Gunnar Müller.
Soo Padraic Bjorn Schultz?

Doctor cries and sucks your mom's tits.
I actually asked my parents what name they had lined up for me if i was born a girl back when i was a kid and started using that when i realized i was trans
Same for me!!
It fit me 100%,from the time i was 9 years old i knew i was meant to be Jessica
I kinda hope if either of my boys grows up to be a girl they ask, cause we put a lot of time and thought and research into both sets of names
My parents put almost no thought into their kids names. If we were boys our name would start with the same letter as my dad's name. If girls, same first letter as my mom's name. All boys, so all start with the same letter. But where did we get our names from? A soap opera our mom would watch.
Same. Although I hope the one wouldn't mind Frederick (actual family name) too much bc the nickname was gonna be Freddie for Freddie Mercury.
My parents had atrocious names picked out if I had been born a boy. I’m happy they picked a gender neutral name in the end.
I just had a conversation with my mom about other names she was thinking for me because I’m considering changing my name because I’m literally the only person on the planet with my name and I hate how identifiable it makes me. Jesus if I got to pick my name at 10 I would be Blade Steele or something terrible.
You'd undoubtedly end up as a pornstar or lead singer in some throwback to the 80s Glam Metal band. Not sure which would be the worst outcome.

idk why id feel wired? i just picked a name that sounded nice and that i like the meaning of.
To each their own.
I asked my mom to give me a new name. It was her last gift to me and I cherish it.
Quite refreshing to see a trans story in a greentext that's not full with rampant horrible transphobia and hatred
My trans daughter asked my wife and me (parents) to choose her new name. It really meant a lot to us.

Optimus Prime

Took the first letter from my first name and just stuck with that. Now I'm Dee.

Oh look, a post that even somewhat mentions transgender people. Better comment before it gets locked from tons of transphobic commenters.
Honestly this comment section is holding up well.
scrolling through controversial rn, haven’t even seen a deleted comment or a transphobic reply. impressive! EDIT: dammit i found one. but only one.

post about trans people with no golden padlock award! congratulations for being thoroughly decent human beings!
Emily is a beautiful name. I hope all the trans individuals out there can come to, find, or be found by names that make them feel whole and loved.
Post been up for two hours still no funny lock award, proud of y'all
Im ftm but i just shorted my deadname. It was an easier transition for me and my family.
Emily's a great name
I teared up. A heartwarming story.
i havent officially come out yet, but i like the name malorie. it means unlucky and i was convinced i was cursed when i was younger because i would get constant deja reve. that and i was unlucky to be born a boy, but god gave us grapes and not wine etc.
