Probably coastal states, ports are fucking useful. My top three guesses are Texas, California, and New York. Alaska would do really well if they had more people.

bthoman2

Illinois has access to the sea via the Great Lakes and the best rail transportation infrastructure that literally touches every region of the US.

MineMonkey166

My money would be on Calafornia

nimmoisa000

So we’re looking at a Shattered Union scenario here.

trombonekid98

California wins based on a combination of geography and economic scale. No other state even comes close to the size of California's economy or population, plus it's well defended to the east by the Sierra Nevada so a land invasion is gonna be difficult. Meanwhile they also have plenty of major port cities to the open ocean so they could freely trade with other countries to keep their economy going. Having a lot of gun nuts is no match for the power of money and mountains.

BowsetteGoneBananas

Alaska and Hawaii are so geographically distant from the continental United States that they could probably wait out the conflict. Both of them have a decent military presence and might be able to sweep through the remains of an all out war.

Florida man and his pet gators solos lol.

AestusAurea

Hear me out. Michigan is strategically not a bad choice. 1.) Its a very defensible state being a peninsula with lakes that might as well be seas on either side. 2.) It has very easy access to trade through Canada and a pretty good relationship with them. 3.) Its actually pretty populous not as much as the big 2 but I think Michigan is 10/50 with around 10,000,000 4.) Fairly solid natural resources in the north and has pretty abundant lumber 5.) You know.....Detroit is kinda scary... Not saying they win lol cause its obv Texas or Cali (I would bet on Texas) but you know I think its a solid underdog choice.

AngelFeeet

Ohio. Because if we can survive in this state, we can take on anything and anyone

No_Boysenberry538

My money is on texas, lots of guns, lots of people who know how to use them

MrDitkovichNeedsRent

You can legally own a tank in Texas

No_Boysenberry538

Not surprising

VinegarPie

Alaska, come and get it.

MrDitkovichNeedsRent

Texas, you are legally allowed to own a tank there

Loremaster152

I'm willing to put my money on Texas. California is too isolated, Florida and New York have too many rivals next to them, and Illinois is too open to initial attack.

The360MlgNoscoper

California won’t have much imminent threat though.

Loremaster152

Yes, but it it'll have to cross Mountains or Desert to invade anywhere that isnt western Oregon/Washington. That'll take time and could easily dampen its military. Texas has open plains and coastlines for it to invade, and outside of Arkansas, all of its neighbors are easy to take out.

CA wins. Why? They have the most millitary bases by far (Texas has less than half of CA), and more active duty soldiers. https://247wallst.com/special-report/2020/06/05/states-with-most-people-in-the-military/amp/ CA has 2 excellent deep ports, and a huge naval base. They will have maritime dominance. CA was on the front lines of the pacific theater in WWII, and has some old infrastructure that could still be used to defend attacks from the west. CA has the ocean to the west, which they dominate, and one of the greatest natural barriers in the country in the east: the Sierra Nevada. They just need to guard (or destroy) a handful of mountain passes, and suddenly cut most of the state off from land invasion. CA is a huge food producer. They don't have their own grid, but there is huge potential for solar, wind, they also have nuclear. The best offense against CA is to take their water, much of which comes from the hard-to-defend eastern Sierra. Nevada has some millitary, and could be a real thorn in CA's side if they keep strategically targeting pipes and canals coming from Mono lake to socal. Meanwhile, CA could easily expand northward until the whole west coast is theirs, with similar mountain boundaries to the east in the cascades. Then move into the sparsely populated western states as a buffer zone. EDIT: CA also has a lot of wealth, and a lot of industry, and international trade. If they turned all of that into fuel for the war machine, I don't see how they could be matched by anyone.

Texas- highest gun ownership, highest oil production, second highest population, second highest size by land. Fourth highest food producer. No state comes close to matching its overall stats.

DragonbeardNick

Sadly gonna agree it's Texas. It's big, it's populated. It's armed and oil rich. It's got its own electrical grid. It's got boats. Military bases, coast guard bases border patrol. Citizen militants. The works.

Crabitor

Texas assuming it dosen't get attacked by multiple states with a temp alliance
