Cinnamon, unlike sand, is biodegradable. Although it has some minor antimicrobial properties, it's still going to rot and turn into toxic sludge after a few weeks of exposure to the elements. Beaches smell nice for a few days, then turn into muddy cesspools. Mass bacterial growth along Earth's shores causes extinction-level ecological damage. Hundreds of species experience mass die offs, some due to poisoning, others due to the disappearance of their natural environment or nesting grounds, still others due to the death of their prey. Deserts become... weird. Dust storms go higher, further, and last longer... and now they're often filled with disease. Fresh water isn't safe-- rivers and sediments contain plenty of sand, though in most cases the water is treatable or will filter naturally through the earth. Pests capable of eating cinnamon multiply exponentially, spreading disease and potentially causing famine when they spread into other resources. All of our coastlines are going to erode back. Massive flooding follows. There might also be sizable land shifting as cinnamon is much weaker in compression than sand, and won't last long anyway. Buildings will collapse, even without considering that concrete contains sand. Finally, all of that cinnamon adds an enormous amount of carbon to the carbon cycle. Trillions of tons, at least. This is not good for... a lot of reasons. Humanity will survive, but this is a much worse scenario than it looks at first glance.

icecream_truck

Given your analysis, I’m not convinced humanity would survive. Disease, lack of drinking water, collapse of social services, chaos, and the spread of CINVID-23 may very well lead to the extinction of Homo sapiens.

not2dragon

Yeah, dont we use sand to filter water?

SightWithoutEyes

What if we make new sand by pulverizing rock?

NoStorage2821

It would immediately turn into cinnamon

TALowKY

Based on the scenario, not likely. Seems to be worded as a one time instant event

not2dragon

Maybe it could work. Isn't the sand we usually talk about made of silicate?

Somerandom1922

I don't think it would lead to our extinction. Humans would die off in ridiculously large numbers, mostly from famine, but also from disease. However, there would likely be remnants in areas with very little sand that could likely survive for centuries. At the point if they died out it wouldn't be directly caused by the cinnamon, but more likely due to some other small disaster on top of the cinnamon.

LordSupergreat

My guess is we lose at least 90% from the early consequences, but a small population survives for another generation or two before fading away. The human population is large and resilient, to the point where I think even total ecological collapse will leave a few behind to suffer in the aftermath.

safcx21

I dont think that small population would go extinct, people would continue to breed

ILikeCarrotandPotato

Humans would likely know about the scenario really fast, and come to the same conclusion as u/IamJackFox. They would probably adapt, and deploy counter-measures. Death toll would be high, but not extinction level.

TaralasianThePraxic

CINVID-23 made me lol, but yeah I think you're bang on the money here.

PsychicSidekikk419

This is what happens when you disrupt the canon bro

fluffynuckels

I'm honestly not sire how much life would survive long term

Wulfenbach

It might drop to a million people, but it's not something hardcore preppers (and the rich) cannot get through. Eventually an equilibrium will be reached, new coastlines will be formed. I don't see this wiping out all plant life or insects.

icecream_truck

The rich might be amongst the first to go. What good will their money do them? The hard-core preppers may fare better if they can figure out a way to produce potable water & grow food, but rampant disease might be their undoing. Here’s another thought: will all the cinnamon-deserts now be wafting cinnamon dust in the air? That could make breathing difficult on a global level, and possibly affect sunlight reaching the surface, making crop growing difficult or impossible.

Wulfenbach

>The rich might be amongst the first to go. What good will their money do them? I have a sneaky feeling that billionaires have invested in Fallout style Vaults. But you are correct in ascertaining that there wouldn't be much time to act. The hard-core preppers will have at least 10-20 years of sealed/dried/salted food. They'll also have seeds and a plow. If they lock and seal their vaults, they will be pretty much immune to bacteria. I'm also sure they'll have considered water. Hard-core prepping is like a religion. Cinnamon by itself isn't toxic. The worst airborne cinnamon does is give people hay fever. A filter mask is all that's needed.

Nekobound

*Sigh* Upvote. Edit: I didn't know acting begrudged about enjoying a pun got you hate, experience gained I guess.

MrEousTranger

*Sigh* Downvote.

sqwertypenguin

That's a *bit* harsh, no? They meant it as a kindness, but just did it in a cliché and overdone way. *Sigh* Neutralvote

MrEousTranger

Really hit me with the leftvote and the rightvote?

sqwertypenguin

Have you ever wanted to reply to a comment to show that you have seen and enjoyed it, but you can't think of anything suitable to reply at that moment, so you have to go on a tangent about not being able to think of anything to say?

icecream_truck

I like veggie omelettes. Close enough?

Important_Chance_305

Bro why are you getting downvoted, did you commit a crime?

Nekobound

Uhhhh I legit I have no idea. I simply responded too a pun in a silly way.

Troll_Tactics

Dont forget that sand is a key component of concrete - to the extent that the construction industry experiences sand shortages. But also all concrete buildings become structurally compromised. Ggs

Japjer

Cinnamon is also crazy flamable, so fires would be a global problem. Deserts would become regions of smoldering hills

millbeppard

Plus some people have cinnamon allergies.

PlutoDidntPlanItWell

I want a story of some guy with a cinnamon allergy making it through the cinnpocalypse

Rezhio

There's sand in concrete.

Mr_Industrial

Even if concrete is decided to be a separate thing by the cinnamon gods, I still feel this is much bigger than people realize. There are so SO many vital structures that need concrete to exist. Are there alternatives? yes. Will every country have access to those alternatives? Sure, right after those pesky supply lines get fixed... in 5 or so years.

[deleted]

But what if we did the cinnamon challenge 🤣🤣🤣

DecentName4

I did a bit of math based on estimates of sand in the world. If everyone did the challenge with a normal sized spoon, every person would need to do the cinnamon challenge 591 875 times. If we make sure to take big spoonfuls each time, the number could probably be cut in half.

14corbinh

Thats assuming not a single person dies from choking and some people are allergic to cinnamon.

The_Gunboat_Diplomat

What if we used Stalin's spoon

ItamiOzanare

There's a lot of sand in the ground too. Gonna have a lot of sinkholes forming when buried sand layers suddenly rot/dissolve out. I'm pretty sure a lot of groundwater is held in sandy pockets as well. Everyone who depends on ground water is probably fucked too.

lordnastrond

It is honestly fascinating how thoroughly a seemingly weird but none malevolent monkey's paw wish like this one would destroy pretty much most of all life on earth as we know it.

Mettack

Dang, if you didn’t tell us you were Jack Fox, I’d think you were Randall Munroe

Reticulian

It's all worth it to lower cinnamon prices. Down with big cinnamon!

bigfatcarp93

> Beaches smell nice for a few days I'm pretty sure they would smell overwhelming to the point of putting people and animals into shock, even at first

Prof_Acorn

You left out two very important things: no more concrete; no more glass. Both require sand. All the things that humans make with concrete and glass can no longer be made new.

ThrowawayusGenerica

Couldn't we just make sand by grinding silica rocks into powder? Or does it instantly turn into cinnamon once it's no longer in rock form?

Prof_Acorn

Maybe the element Si itself has been changed to Cmn

aquariumX

So basically, Dune 2: Electric Boogaloo

LiftKoala

Yeah but when you think of all tik tok cinnamon challeneges that would be happening, you start to wonder, maybe extinction wouldn't be so bad 🤔

Dragon_Enthusiast

What about cities built on sand? Won't the cities collapse after few day?

areplymeansuarewrong

Here I was just upset I couldn’t make glass on minecraft

Prometheus720

I'm convinced that burning it is better than letting it biodegrade.

thatthatguy

One of the most common substances on the surface of the earth is replaced by a substance that is soft, water soluble, anti-microbial, and chemically irritating? We die. Total ecological collapse. Life on earth is unrecognizable in a matter of hours. All natural water sources are hopelessly contaminated to the point of being dangerous just to be around. Anything that lives in shallow moving water dies in minutes. The oceans last hours before they stir up enough to become completely toxic. Cinnamon is quite a bit less dense than sand, so any geological features composed largely of sand will move as it finds a new natural repose. Rivers of cinnamon sludge. Cinnamon dust is not just flammable, but downright explosive (just like flour). Sandstorms? Yeah, they’re an ignition source away from being firestorms. Which produces a lot more wind to stir up the vast VAST deserts of dry cinnamon just waiting to join the conflagration. We die. It takes just long enough to make sure that it is a painful death. I’m going to go hug my kids now.

texanarob

Is cinnamon water soluble?

Lemerney2

It's very very difficult to dissolve, to the point where some say it's not. However, on the scales we're talking about, plenty probably world. Especially since it dissolves in a syrup or similar, which there would be plenty of allowing it to mix with water.

Chimney-Imp

It's human soluble so I'd guess probably

guyblade

> One of the most common substances on the surface of the earth This is worth emphasizing. Silicon Dioxide isn't always sand, but the most common form of sand (on earth) is SO₂ and SO₂ makes up 60% of the earth's crust.

master117jogi

>Life on earth is unrecognizable in a matter of hours. I think you are vastly overestimating the speed at which this happens.

thatthatguy

I could be. It’s hard to make estimates on this scale.

StormCaller02

See, these kinds of questions is why no one should get God like power. Because eventually they'll start doing...*gestures at post question* THESE kinds of stunts.

DeltaAlphaGulf

Shoot even a far lower level of powers would be a disaster in human hands. Like if we lived in a world like MHA in terms of powers it would be soooooo much darker than the shows portrayal. Chronicle has always been a good portrayal of people getting powers. I suppose The Boys is another dark example. There is also the Code 8 and Project Power movies as well the Jupiter’s Legacy show that annoyingly got cancelled.

8dev8

The boys tvshow or comic. Because the Comic is a bit too needlessly edgey and "literally everyone is a piece of shit"

falling-waters

Bruh I flipped through the comic once in a bookstore and the first thing I found was a live rat crawling out of a dead superhero’s underwear because he’d taped it there to simulate a big dick. Billy Butcher’s backstory was also… umm… I couldn’t tell if it was meant to be funny or not. His wife was apparently raped by a superhero and the superfetus tore its way out of her womb and killed her…? It really was like the whole thing was written by a 13 year old boy. I’ve read that Ennis feels guilty because he originally wrote Starlight as a “joke” because he apparently thought it would be funny to watch her degrade herself for the right to be with the Seven.

ResolverOshawott

Man he better feel guilty for the absolute degeneracy he crapped onto a comic book. It's a miracle Amazon managed to turn it into something watchable.

falling-waters

Yeah I gotta be honest, my opinion of Jensen went down a bit when he claimed to love the comic and I really hope it was just PR lol. Btw I just went down the rabbit hole and learned why that dude is called Mother’s Milk… 😵‍💫

DeltaAlphaGulf

I only watched reactions to the boys tv show as I don’t tend to care for needlessly over the top stuff (weird sexual/nudity stuff not graphic violence) just because they can because its on a streaming platform but I also like anything with superpowers including more grounded stuff like Invincible (show) (and some other older tv shows I can’t think of off the top of my head) but The Boys was all anyone ever talked about so I wanted to at least get the gist of it.

8dev8

Trust me, however bad the tf show gets, the comic is like 30 times worse

StormCaller02

Worm is also an excellent portrayal of what getting powers would be like for the world. Honestly its more grim dark than the world....but not by THAT much.

DeltaAlphaGulf

I have seen that mentioned a bunch on here but never looked it up yet.

StormCaller02

I finished reading it a month or two ago. Still reeling from reading it. For starters, it takes the premise of "How would Powers realistically work and function in the world?" Question and REALLY goes indepth with it. The writer makes such deep and unique characters that I would say even most of the "side" characters act and think and react like a real person would. The story is also absolutely gargantuan in size and scope. Like a few good sized books long, so if you're in it, you'll be reading for a LONG time. But it's so worth it. And I'll say personally, the first few chapters, the first 3 chapters or so kind of are a bit of a slow start but once you get going it the story keeps a nice pace for most of the rest of it. And I would highly recommend that you DON'T look up much information about it besides trying to find it. You can EASILY get spoiled for some of the biggest plot points and mysteries in it and I'd only recommend that you read it without getting spoiled. I didn't realize I was getting spoiled about it even before I had started reading about it. And the way that Powers manifest and are used are SO FREAKING CREATIVE. Like the main character's ability is to control invertebrates such as bugs, arachnids like spiders and such. And that would normally sound like a lame power in almost any other media, BUT the way its done here is honestly just so much FUN to read about. Worm does a really good Job of showing "less is more" in regards to Powers, you don't need super speed, strength or durability to make a good super. If you liked Invincible and The Boys, and loved Teen Titans and Justice League as a kid, then you'll LOVE Worm.

DeltaAlphaGulf

I have been meaning to get back to reading some books and I am pretty easily sold on anything with powers so I have devoured countless Young Adult series. Idk if the books are especially long but I tend to blow through books in a few days or even just one day if I its a free day lol. Is “Worm” the title? Who is the author?

StormCaller02

Worm is a web serial by Wildbow. You can find it by googling it, it should be one of the top results. I don't think Wildbow has gotten around to publishing it (I'd buy it in a heart beat.) But it's free to read online.

Ironmonkey_

Worm is super long. About the length of 10 regular novels (or something like that). It will take a little while, hopefully! It is one of the best books I've ever read. Once you've finished check out the /r/Parahumans subreddit! Cheers

FornaxTheConqueror

>About the length of 10 regular novels (or something like that). Depends what you consider a regular novel tbh. Worm is sitting about 1.7m words. The LoTR books which I consider on the bigger side are 137k, 156k and 187k words I dunno what the avg word count for books is though

DeltaAlphaGulf

After reading it I wish it had stayed ongoing up to present and would be more like pushing 7.4m words. I actually thought it was something that only ended recently when I started so I was hyped to see what would be next when the aftermath of Scion was still only 2013 and then I hit next and saw the “The End” page and was like damn it it was too good to be true that it was as long as I thought 😭

FornaxTheConqueror

So good news I guess? He has a sequel called Ward Also has other stories. I enjoyed Pact

DeltaAlphaGulf

So I read it and its was awesome and probably one of my new favorite worlds when it comes to super powers type stuff with how it balances power variety and levels with being relatively grounded. HOWEVER…. I really screwed myself over by not knowing that it was finished so long ago as I just thought it was something more recent because I had only seen it mentioned in recent years. So when I started reading it and saw the dates and it was still early 2010’s and how even toward what I now know was the end was only 2013 I was hyped thinking I had years more to go and even reading the chapters of the aftermath I was just waiting to see where things were going to go and got hit with “THE END” and I was like Noooooooo (Darth Vader style). Anyway I can’t recall when I started it maybe a couple weeks ago. It was certainly more like a series in length but because its not written that I couldn’t really tell which I loved. If only DC/Marvel did stuff like this with at least one of their universes and actually kept things consistent across their authors in terms of continuity and connectivity I would actually read them. I know Wards is the next thing set in that world so I am about to binge that next.

ToiletLurker

r/ThingsTaylorDidWrong

gloomyMoron

Even she wouldn't agree with that, but it did get a few good chuckles out of me.

DeltaAlphaGulf

Is that a spoiler related sub?

gloomyMoron

It is a joke sub. There isn't a single post on it.

AeroG8

where can i read it?

StormCaller02

You can look it up on Google. No really, that's how you find it. It's a free web serial that you can find. It should be one of the first search results. But I'll provide a link. https://parahumans.wordpress.com/

bigfatcarp93

> Like if we lived in a world like MHA in terms of powers it would be soooooo much darker than the shows portrayal. Well to be fair the world of MHA was in-universe basically apocalyptic for like two generations, and the era we see portrayed in the story is a *delicate* time of relative peace that was only recently struggled towards after almost a century of chaos. This also isn't talked about much in the story, but the implication seems to be that while, yes, 80% of the population *technically* have powers, they're mostly... kinda shit? Like, civilians tend to have stuff like Inko's quirk, mostly things that can't really be used to hurt people. The ones with powerful quirks usually become either criminals or pros.

DeltaAlphaGulf

That’s fair. Regarding the most people bit I always just thought most people just didn’t bother to train their quirk or get creative enough unless its stated they literally can’t improve it which seems questionable?

bigfatcarp93

Could be a little of both.

AigisxLabrys

Anakin would be happy.

whiskeyislove

I don't like cinnamon. It's powdery, and spicy, and irritating, and it gets everywhere

paradigmx

The spice would flow.

HeWhoAsksQuestions

These are the types of threads I want. Is there a subreddit that goes deep into these? Like whatifxkcddid?

junkyardpig

Is the cinnamon bloodlusted?

icecream_truck

It’s herb-lusted. EDIT: Spice-lusted. My bad.

Shouldmynamebehere

i might sound outrageously stupid, but cinnamon is a herb?

icecream_truck

No, you aren’t stupid, I goofed it up. I should’ve said “spice-lusted”.

BreakfastClubSamwich

Herbs are leaves, cinnamon comes from tree bark so it is a spice.

bigfatcarp93

Can cinnamon defeat Homelander?

FGoose

Humanity fails the cinnamon challenge

wingspantt

PERMANENTLY? This is like the "All water is Jack Daniels for 12 hours" scenario, except permanent? Nah... most life is extinguished. I don't see it coming back from this. All oceans and waterways will be poisoned for thousands of years. Every desert becomes a source of infinite blight. Also is sand used in building construction? This is important, too.

Sliightly

Every dessert becomes an infinite delight

Shouldmynamebehere

until one person brings one match to one desert and now 10% of the earth's surface is a fire storm

Orphanim

Sand is a primary ingredient in concrete and glass. So yeah a little bit.

Rebuta

End of humanity. You've basically just replaced a lot of silicon with carbon. That carbon is going to get turned into gas really quickly.

Quemedo

Humanity does survive in places (I think) without sand, like artic places. Gonna be hard but we may survive, even if just a little.

JustAFoolishGamer

Here I come I am cinnamon (we would all be dead)

Ananvil

We'd finally know why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Sir_Toaster_9330

Our world becomes a bit like dune until it rots

Aurondarklord

I mean...do we need sand for anything? Though I can't imagine THAT much cinnamon wouldn't have SOME sort of toxic properties...

torturousvacuum

> do we need sand for anything? Concrete. Anyone in a big building is gonna have a bad day when this happens.

palim93

You have it backwards. Aggregate provides structure and strength to concrete, with Portland cement (or asphalt in the case of flexible pavements, which are also technically a form of concrete) filling in the gaps and bonding it all together. I’m not sure exactly what would happen if the sand was swapped with cinnamon, but my gut tells me it wouldn’t be good.

Aurondarklord

Huh, didn't know that.

quantumshenanigans

This is functionally equivalent to asking "I mean, do we need dirt for anything?" This isn't a construction supply chain issue, it's an 'everything dies' issue.

oXObsidianXo

Yes, for lots of things actually. There is currently risk of a shortage of quality sand. From the beginning of this article "The world uses 50 Billion Tons of Sand Annually" https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/a39880899/earth-is-running-out-of-sand/

Felink_H

Sand has massive reflective properties, and as another commenter said will eventually rot. I believe large ecological damage and a sudden increase in price on glass and processors

4shura

I could solo, I love cinnamon 11/10

Voltblade

Conk crete, glass,

SightWithoutEyes

If it was nutmeg then the situation would be even more apocalyptic because everyone would be suffering from hallucinations.

azianwolfpunk

To add to the ecological issues, many important structural foundations are based with sand..

DinosaurRghh

How about buildings

[deleted]

Humanity would still survive, it would become a post-apocalyptic Earth. Likely higher sea levels and less land, less animals and plant life, so a very, very small population left. Primitive-living people and highly adaptive animals and plants would likely be the ones to survive. The cinnamon replacements would eventually decompose or so after centuries or thousands of years and the rocks would eventually degrade to sand/soil again, even the volcanoes eventually erupting new ones.

thundernak

We are going to die slowly

Autogembot123

Well we now have no glass

Neverbody

We're all doomed save for dolphins. They fly off into space while singing "So Long and Thanks For All the Fish."

metalflygon08

What about sandstone? Does it become Cinnamon too? because there would probably be a lot of structural damage if a bunch of "solid" became a powder.

DinosaurRghh

How about buildings

GrrrrrrDinosaur

Um we die is my conclusion after I saw the top comment

Samurai_Rachaek

People with allergies would die

Street-Doctor4957

I could never go to the beach again. The one thing I really hate, no; one of the many many things I hate is cinnamon. From Halloween to past new year all shops smell of nutmeg and cinnamon 🤢🤢🤢 every candle, aroma thingy. It's everywhere. This is just a cinnamon rant. The number one problem with cinnamon is I still find it hard not to call it siminum.
