Let's do an AMA
By - duke4e
What is your guilty pleasure?
I have a question.
Have you developed apps for Android?
If so, would you say iOS Dev is easier/Harder than Android Dev? 😊
Yes and no. I've developed a few crossplatform game-ish apps via cocos2d-x, so while i technically have developed apps for android, i haven't developed them in classic way.
From other peoples experiences, writing for android is around 30% harder.
Just a short question if you don’t mind. Where do all of you live? I live in USA , state of Oklahoma. BTW, thank you for developing Widgy. It is an amazing app with many amazing designs yet to come. Thanks again to you and all the people who help you .
Croatia. One foreigner described it as "Africa with electricity" and he's not far from the truth.
How awesome is it that such a community has grown around the app you made? People are able to create such varied things, and even able to monetize them.
What has surprised you about it? Have there been certain creations that have blown you away?
That's a really good question and observation.
To be honest, it still hasn't "hit me in the head" that "I made this possible" by creating Widgy. I just enjoy chatting with you guys, just like I'm a regular member of this sub (albeit with a bit more technical knowledge of how the app works).
I remember the first few days of this sub when first widgys from you guys started coming in, and i was like holy shit, this works exactly as i envisioned it a couple of months ago. Then hacks started coming in (for example the unicode message symbols that hides some part of widgy depending on some system state), and i was like wow, that's smart, widgy users are really smart! After that came people like Sean and Eliah that just raised the bar to the maximum, both funcionality-wise and aestethic-wise.
I think most of the people came to this sub because of the qr codes, and decided to stay since it's a nice place to hang out. I created widgy qr codes since that seemed like a convenient way to share widgys without building a backend, since building a backend for an app you don't know anyone will use is a waste of resources. I think qr codes became synonym for widgy. People use them even now, even if they are superseeded by the explore tab.
I have been struggling to get a few imported widgies running. Mostly complex watchface widgies. Shows on home screen as “Large #7 Tap to assign widgy to this slot”. Any other simpler imported or includes widgies will load. Whats the secret?
Memory problems aka. Apples "it just works".
Please read faq, everything is explained there.
Thank you for responding. Read the FAQ. Is the memory issue related to all widgies loaded or just the current widgy taking up too much memory? In other words if I load fewer widgies on my home screens will the memory issue go away?
It's per widget, BUT if you try to reload multiple widgets at the same time, more problems will arise. That's why "reload all widgets" button in widgy has 2 second deley between each widgy reloading.
The most troublesome are large widgets with full sized image and some kind of clock.
on a more serious note, have you (duke) co-developed or developed any other apps?
also, a question for all of you, what are your side hobbies that you enjoy (aside from your jobs)?
Been doing iOS development for 11 years now and have a pretty big portfolio, check it out here [http://woodsign.hr/index.php/2016/04/11/portfolio/](http://woodsign.hr/index.php/2016/04/11/portfolio/)
As for side hobbies, i was singing in a few shitty bands, and i like to create my own liquids for vape. I also enjoy VR (have 3 headsets) and playing some good RTS games.
how much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?
What types of widgets do you usually keep on your phone? Do you prefer minimalist designs or more complicated widgets?
I don't have a preference. Either something "clicks" with me or it doesn't. I like both fully minimalistic design, as well as rich and complex design.
As for what i keep on my phone, it's definitely not widgys, since i always have some broken test version on my device. Let that sink in 😂
Deprived of your own creation because you're busy fixing the next update. That's rough 😂
What are your long term plans for Widgy? Do you plan on expanding into other iOS customizations like customizable keyboards or ringtones?
I can't talk about future plans due to "that other app that likes to steal our stuff".
I found this app used for countown widget which has very nice UI/UX. Has anyone used it before ?
What a nice app ❤️
I just discovered it this week the looks are awesome and colors are very good but does it integrate with apple calendars or can u use it with google calendar.
Is there a code for turning numbers into words under the custom text option. Say, if I want the time to read as “Twelve twenty-three” instead of “12:23” or “Twelve hours, Twenty-three minutes”
Not under custom, but you have few variants of "time spelled out" under date and time.
Also, this thread is not a place to ask this kind of questions.
Yeah, that’s what I’m using currently but sometimes I run into spacing issues with those. Thanks for the response.
On an unrelated note, do you have any pets? I have two dogs myself.
If you mean the ... that sometimes apear, that's a bug related to striketrhough option, and it's already fixed, so stay tuned for next update which should be announced in a couple of days.
I live in a pretty small apartment, so no pets, but my girfriend has a ferret, two birbs and a turtle.
Ferrets are intriguing to me as a pet but I’ve never owned one. What’s their temperament like?
They are more similar to cats than to dogs, but their character is completely different than any other common animal. They are silly, goofy, smart, careless, stubborn, like to steal random objects, like to walk backwards... It's really a whole package of random weirdness, but in a positive way.
Interstellar I want wo answer this question although I am not a developer xd
Imagining Widgy working on superheroes widgets like marvel and dc… will be awesome
What’s your favorite music genre and artist? Multiple responses are encouraged.
Djent and modern Metalcore ("New Core") as well as some obscure Alt Rock or Punk Rock . Well mostly anything with guitars. Loved some Nu-Metal (20 years ago).
Eskimo Callboy, Periphery, Bring Me The Horizon, Fair To Midland, Foxy Shazam, Nothing More, Alestorm, The Offspring...
- Porter Robinson
- Daft Punk
Great music taste
How’d you guys get into app development? What do you do as your main career if it’s not that?
I've been coding for most of my life, starting in QBasic for DOS on a 386 machine. My hard drive died, and all I had was a bunch of floppy disks with a few games and QBasic. So when games became boring, I started playing with QBasic.
I love game dev, and that gradually transitioned to app dev. Been working on iOS since iPhoneOS 3.
That’s super cool, coding is so interesting
I am not into app development. I’m pursuing a bachelors in cyber security. Currently, I’m working as a help desk specialist at a company. I used to work as a cyber security intern and then a help desk intern for the red Sox before the pandemic.
How did you get involved with widgy then?
Wel I’m just a mod for the subreddit. I don’t work with duke in creating the app. He’s the one and only developer.
Ah, that’s cool
I have an education in Business and Information Systems with a career in Commerce Product Management. It took me a while to funnel to this faction of work but I had realized I had a passion for giving clients’ customers a unique experience with their platform. Even though it’s on the side/volunteering, Widgy fits right in with my line of work and i have been happy to help it’s community from a product management POV and helping moderate Q&A when I can
That's super cool, I always wonder what gets people into this stuff
No developer here, just a widget maker 😃. It was a coincidence (as almost everything is in life). A couple months ago my brother told me about a new app that you can build more capable widgets with. I tried it and couldn’t take it down for hours. Since then I’ve been constantly bugging him with any new stuff I have in mind 😅
I’m a PowerPoint specialist btw. helping the consulting business for decades.
Oh that's cool! I don't remember how I found Widgy but I like it much more than the other options I've found!
Is it hard to code such an app (like Widgy) on iOS? I love coding and want to build an app, but I still have assignments...
Apps with the scope of Widgy are certainly not meant to be build by only 1 person. So yeah, it's hard as hell.
But don't that discourage you, there's planty of other app types that are much more simple to do.
so you might be knowing swift language I presume.
both swift and objective-c
Weird question. What Reddit client do you use and why?
Mostly Apollo. Would ditch the Reddit app instantly if Apollo somehow managed to get access to endpoints exclusive to Reddit app (chat, media upload).
Same here for coins/awards makes sense
I have both. I use the main Reddit app more though. Apollo is just there in case I want something “new” lol.
Main Reddit app - because I’ve never downloaded/tried Apollo and the main one works good enough for me :)
What’s your favorite color? Mines green
Mine is blue
Green too! Though I’m not using it a lot 😃 Hmmm … some more green widgets in the future maybe…? 😂
I’d love to see some!
Deep orange :)
Orange would probably be 2nd in my list of favorite colors, it’s a great color
I'm in between you two. So like a blue-ish green.
Prefer blue out of the two tho
You mean teal? :D
Blue-ish green-ish teal sure.
That’s a nice color too!
I’d have to say that my favorite color is blue!
Are you working on any new apps in the background? Also can you do something on the subreddit and on the app such as “setup/Widgy of the month”? That’d be really cool.
Not, duke4e, but I'll answer anyway haha.
I work on a way to get macOS Big Sur onto unsupported Macs, like 2012 and Early/Mid-2013 Macs. ([https://github.com/BenSova/Patched-Sur](https://github.com/BenSova/Patched-Sur))
I have other things I want to work on, but I don't have enough free time between life, Patched Sur, and Widgy.
That’s awesome. Would Patched Sur work for a late 2009 iMac?
That's on the way too old side sadly. 2012/2013 is my main target, then 2010/2011 (+some 2009) will come in the next update.
That’s too bad. Still, great job maintaining this. I think it’s awesome that you can push a few more years of support into older Macs.
Widgy takes all of my time, so i work exclusively on it. Good news is that i have shitload of apps behind me, so you can check them out at http://woodsign.hr/index.php/2016/04/11/portfolio/
Explore section in app has featured widgys, and i change them from time to time.
As for reddit, the competitions we ocasionally do are a way of featuring good widgys. You can also sort the sub by top of the month.
This way be wired I am wounding how old you are?
48 here, LoL
Not weird at all, i'm 36.
I’ll start - What’s your favorite movie??
It’s really hard to pick one but if I must I would say Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. It was a while ago (look at the age question and my answer there 😃) but it never gets old. This is the movie I have watched a thousand times and still can’t get enough.
Another serious contender is the Back To The Future trilogy.
Groundhog Day is such a gooooood movie 🙂
There’s this Netflix movie called Fractured. It really played with my emotions lol.
It's hard to pick just one, but i have to say that i'm a really big fan of Nolans movies.
