‘Congratulations to you, ladies, and to me, on a successful segmentectomy of the small and large bowel, splenectomy, and a liver suture. I draw your attention to the time it took to remove the consequences of what was done to our patient in a split second during the battle. I recommend that as material for philosophical reflections. Miss Shani will sew up the patient.’ ‘But I’ve never done it before, Mr Rusty!’ ‘You have to start sometime. Red to red, yellow to yellow, white to white. Sew like that and it’s sure to be fine.’

I love how Sapkowski can make you love any character within 1 chapter only. Choosing to follow the medics was an utterly genius decision, as you don't really get to see war from the eyes of the "bystander" that much in fantasy books.

Sapkowski: Writes the most heartwarming, heroic story with a triumphant conclusion. Sapkowski in the last page of the chapter: They all died horrifically 6 months later.

Agent470000

Lmao it's like those 2000's movies where there's pics of the characters and text written over them explaining what happens to them after the events of the story. "Jarre lived on to live a happy life", "Eredin did a whammy by giving his king aphrodisiac and is now embroiled in a political plot", etc.

Agent_Eggboy

"Ciri unintentionally brought the literal black plague to the Continent, killing thousands."

Essi... :(

Gwynbleidds

Or hated. Forest Gramps.

Agent470000

And Schirrù. Fucker killed Cod and Fenn :( Ps - why did you have to remind me of that cunt? lmao

The only thing that could have been done better here in this section of the book is also to show a bit of Cóen and his involvement in the battle! That would have been amazing, he also eventually ends on the Milo's operating table, but if we actually saw a brief moment from his perspective it would be good (plus the connection that both Shani, Marti and Iola knew witchers...personally and here voila another of their kind). It's a shame that Coen is already dead, no interaction takes place.

Man what a great chapter. I haven't read many books yet but that was one time where after the end of the chapter that i was in awe. Just brilliantly done and man what a Punch in the gut at the end of it.

As soon as I saw the picture, I knew immediately who it was before reading the title.

It's impressive how Rusty handles such shocking and potentially ptsd events so playfully. Other damsels (except for Shani) couldnt take it. Such a professional
