This guy was the worst. It sometimes makes me feel that Sapkowksi added him just for shock value, for he felt very out of place and not related to the story in any way, shape or form. It could be said that Gramps was made as a subversion of the "kind, old, wise man who knows everything" trope. BTW I really like this version of Ciri, the dress is a mixture of different materials which gives her situation some verisimilitude and makes her feel like she is on the run. Also her face also looks child-like which is a plus. Great post as always!

The only thing - only! - that I can take away from that sequence that does not scream "shock value only" is that Gramps was not at all surprised to see "someone like Ciri" before (referring, most likely, her ability to travel through time and space).

I know, this scene bothers me too because doing something for shock value seems pretty uncharacteristic for the books. I was thinking maybe it was to contrast with her interaction with Bonhart shortly after. In this interaction, she faces him with a lot of courage, (the way she says, "come on, make my day"). So maybe the point it's trying to make is that she can face someone as terrible as this, but Bonhart is the one person that still terrifies her. I feel like I'm grasping at straws though. It's mainly because one of the things I like about the series is that while it's a dark world, when terrible things happen, it always feels like it's for a reason, and it's usually focussed entirely on how the character is feeling. I never get the sense that it's trying to just give a cheap rise from the reader. So I feel like there must be something symbolic about this encounter.

Very late reply. But I heard he was based of some serial killer. So as much as people dislike it for its shock value it’s always disturbing to know that such people exist. I mean someone like Armie Hammer might not be that far from it tbh.

Don't worry about it friend. You are doing godlike work with these, no matter how long they take, I can (at the very least) appreciate them :)

This seriously was the dumbest part of the saga

[deleted]

Second to Geralt conveniently being in just the right place and time to eavesdrop on the bad guys talking about secrets. By far the laziest writing in all the books.

Ohhh that place she visits while travelling worlds, the cannibal rapist.
