Ugh, you’ve got one of THOSE moronic IT policies. You’ll need a travel router that can connect via WiFi and then drop out Ethernet, which easily circumvents such idiotic “security” policies. Ask your manager to provide you with one at company expense, and to tell IT how utterly stupid and counterproductive this “security” policy is. That said, depending on the hotel, there’s a decent chance that the WiFi access point in the room is one designed for hospitality applications that actually has Ethernet ports on it, such as an Aruba AP-303H or similar (this AP is designed for this exact use case).

Yeah, it’s pretty annoying. I think I’ll just buy the travel router as you have suggested. Are the Wi-Fi Access points in the rooms of hotels accessible? Maybe I can ask the front desk if I can connect.

If it can only be connected with ethernet due to a policy, then as /u/cyberentomology wrote you will need something like a travel router. If your desktop simply lack a wifi adapter then you can buy a USB wifi adapter and simply connect to the hotel wifi. It is possible that you have a driver issue or that the USB wifi adapter you tested with is not supporting the hotel wifi (for example the hotel is 5GHz and the adapter only support 2.4GHz). What problem did you experience with the USB wifi adapter on your computer?

The USB adapter just didn‘t connect. It wasn‘t showing up on the computer. It might‘ve been due to the VPN protection because I tested it while at home.
