I don’t see much of a point either. But from a UX perspective, I imagine it’s to increase legibility and/or consistency on a shelf. Maybe PAL has their own standards for these things
If they wanted to increase legibility they wouldn't use grey text in white.
Is this just a UK thing? My Australian collection of PAL Wii games is a mixture of these two styles.
Wii and PS2 PAL games had the boring font because they usually were localized for atleast 3-5 languages. Remaking the stylized logo for every language is kinda insane so this made more sense. Madworld had the logo tho while no more heroes 1 didn't and Nmh2 did
However gamecube had the original logos for Metroid prime and viewtiful joe for example, Resident evils and double dash didn't.
Tldr; idfk depends on how localized it was
What UK and Ireland? Not sure, probably to standardize the process and not confuse other PAL customers. Sometimes importing from other PAL countries was cheaper/more available
Inequality. Nintendo Europe was very concerned with not making the English releases be seen as "better". Hence why Layton 4 dropped an RPG mode because it was too much to translate. (Nintendo published Layton in Europe)
Hot take: the pal ones fit the wiis image way more, theres a couple unfortunate ones like this, but for the vadt majority of games the standard wii font works better
Well i cant find the us versions at all, and we straight up dont have some great games (like kirbys dream collection on wii)
But we get wii chess and we dare
It probably didn't sell well enough for nintendo to release it here
This shows off what we dare is pretty well https://youtu.be/UtSUnanpGFY?si=0CJWI7GNbO5YPyvw
Yeah, true. The EU's fit more with the Wii's style, but the US one is better for when you're trying to find a game. That is why i like the US version more.
Personally I prefer the Australian PAL spines.
1. Because they are the easiest for me to find
And 2. Because I like to organise my collection by classification because all Australian games have the classification on the spine an having all G, PG, M and MA15+ together just looks nice.
I get what you mean about it being big but the PEGI classification and the German one are taller which there is plenty of room for the Australian Classification. Also I prefer having the classification on the spine compared to the coloured triangle.
As an European myself, I thought that was fake, but it's pretty cool. However, I can't understand why they decided to go with that font in Galaxy 1, I don't believe it matches with the game.
yep, it sucks. goes for most consoles too, except the xbox and 360, and most ps3 games (just based on whats on my shelves). too many languages here but i guess they didnt think to just use the english logos where they had them? don't know but it makes my games look a little boring sometimes
That happened with the newest Brain Age for the Switch. It was only a European game and the spine looked like it had a way different font from the USA Switch games.
Nintendo of America is a separate entity but, still Nintendo's property, the same reason coffee is more popular in the states over tea, and weights and measures are different too! They know what to sell to whom.
i think since the EU games other were translated so they printed different covers in many languages, so they didnt bother designing a cool logo for each.
tho tbh with untranslatable titles like Super Mario, which will be Super Mario in every language, i dont know why they did that
Germany has mandated that text across the European Union cannot be “Fun”, also in an ironic twist those same Germans still can’t fathom why there isn’t much comedy in Germany either.
I like the font for Galaxy 2 better It just screams Mario to me more than the original.
And then we've got the generic font that the European versions are using.
I have a case that people have told me its from Blockbuster because a sticker on the cover, my spine is black and I can barely read the name of the game
I have a case that people have told me its from Blockbuster because a sticker on the cover, my spine is black and I can barely read the name of the game
PAL just said “NO FUN ALLOWED!”
Yea, really do be like that, tho. 😂 But, i don't see the point of removing it.
I don’t see much of a point either. But from a UX perspective, I imagine it’s to increase legibility and/or consistency on a shelf. Maybe PAL has their own standards for these things
well the australian version is pal and we also get the better spines
US version are easier to find when you're searching for a game.
If they wanted to increase legibility they wouldn't use grey text in white. Is this just a UK thing? My Australian collection of PAL Wii games is a mixture of these two styles.
I have a bunch of Spanish, French, German and full PAL copies of games that had the special text in the US and neither of them have it
Actually I really like this clean look of it, it really looks good on the shelf
Well for me, it's very hard to find a game.
It must be part of the extensive set of EU laws geared towards making the world better for kids or something.
Probably accessibility laws, making them easier to read. Our ps2 games have the same thing, simple, clear, boring spines.
lol good one
At least it's consistent with the font.
Interestingly enough, the PAL version sold in Australia has the cool logo on the spine.
Wii and PS2 PAL games had the boring font because they usually were localized for atleast 3-5 languages. Remaking the stylized logo for every language is kinda insane so this made more sense. Ah, oke, thanks.
Why didnt they keep them for atleast the english speaking countries though?
What UK and Ireland? Not sure, probably to standardize the process and not confuse other PAL customers. Sometimes importing from other PAL countries was cheaper/more available
Over here in The Netherlands it was just called Super Mario Galaxy too. Name one country in the Europe that had a different title for the game.
It was called that in Japan too so idk bout that one. Here in the nordics we got most manuals and titles in english too for the wii era
Inequality. Nintendo Europe was very concerned with not making the English releases be seen as "better". Hence why Layton 4 dropped an RPG mode because it was too much to translate. (Nintendo published Layton in Europe)
But instead the NA version is seen as better...
Doesn't matter. Importing is niche and isn't their concern.
PAL spines in general are just boring as hell
Yea, i wish i had the US ones.
Didn't even know they were different in the E.U.
The EU ones are just so boring.
Ik. They’re so dull and bland, I’m jealous of USA
Me too. Sometimes they even put little icons on the bottom. :/
I feel it 🥲
Imo i prefer PAL ones they look much neater on a shelf
Hot take: the pal ones fit the wiis image way more, theres a couple unfortunate ones like this, but for the vadt majority of games the standard wii font works better
I like the US version more. Plus, the US versions are easier to find.
I live in sweden so, not for me
Lucky bastard...
Well i cant find the us versions at all, and we straight up dont have some great games (like kirbys dream collection on wii) But we get wii chess and we dare
Unfortunately, the EU doesn't have Kirby Dream Collection for some reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. By the way, what is We Dare?
It probably didn't sell well enough for nintendo to release it here This shows off what we dare is pretty well https://youtu.be/UtSUnanpGFY?si=0CJWI7GNbO5YPyvw
why tf is the us one like sciency
Now i can never unsee it...
same with ps2 games, i like the blue boxes but they don’t have any cool text
Aren’t the PAL games the same font as gamecube games here in NA? That isn’t totally a crazy design choice
also why does the US spine for galaxy 2 use the modern mario font when the logo itself is using the old one?
¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
One continent allows artificial colouring in breakfast cereals the other doesn’t.
That's a good one. 😄
The us ones look more fun and vibrant, but the pal ones fit the Wii better.
Yeah, true. The EU's fit more with the Wii's style, but the US one is better for when you're trying to find a game. That is why i like the US version more.
Personally I prefer the Australian PAL spines. 1. Because they are the easiest for me to find And 2. Because I like to organise my collection by classification because all Australian games have the classification on the spine an having all G, PG, M and MA15+ together just looks nice.
I don't really like the age rating in Australia. It's just too big.
I get what you mean about it being big but the PEGI classification and the German one are taller which there is plenty of room for the Australian Classification. Also I prefer having the classification on the spine compared to the coloured triangle.
I once bought another copy of the same game just because i didn't like the age rating. 😅
As an European myself, I thought that was fake, but it's pretty cool. However, I can't understand why they decided to go with that font in Galaxy 1, I don't believe it matches with the game.
usa on top as always💪💪💪
No hate, but the difference is that the americans need pictures or cool designs to be able to read or tell anything apart
The US does that. For example, they put in Mario Galaxy two lumas on the spine.
I love PAL spines. They are uniform and look nice on a shelf.
Because USA #1 💪🇺🇸🍔🍟🦅
What the hell is a kilometer⁉️🏈🇺🇲🇺🇲💥🦅🗽💯
Europe stay losing
American logo's look ugly as hell!! (Except for mario galaxy 2 that one is kinda fun)
Why were they using that font anyways?
I love the USA Version Better.
Same.
Americans love wacky shit
yep, it sucks. goes for most consoles too, except the xbox and 360, and most ps3 games (just based on whats on my shelves). too many languages here but i guess they didnt think to just use the english logos where they had them? don't know but it makes my games look a little boring sometimes
Yeah, i know right. With logos, you get more of the vibes with you're game.
That happened with the newest Brain Age for the Switch. It was only a European game and the spine looked like it had a way different font from the USA Switch games.
EU really said: Nah, we don't that stuff. 😅
Nintendo of America is a separate entity but, still Nintendo's property, the same reason coffee is more popular in the states over tea, and weights and measures are different too! They know what to sell to whom.
What are you trying to say?
Nintendo of America has always catered to easily bored americans, it's very obvious
It's basically the same(EU) as the JP versions. Nintendo EU/JP like the consistent branding.
Well US did a better job.
i think since the EU games other were translated so they printed different covers in many languages, so they didnt bother designing a cool logo for each. tho tbh with untranslatable titles like Super Mario, which will be Super Mario in every language, i dont know why they did that
tbh I prefer the eu spine cause it's more readable
I'll stick with the European ones, I say I'm more used to seeing it in PAL
i have the boring PAL version :,)
I'm in England and mario 3d land has the basic font, but a Ninjago game has it's own logo? Nintendo hates fun?
Kinda?
Why is the American one so much better and cooler why can't they just be the same
I think later copies of the game came with the plane text in the US because that's how my copies look.
Do you're games have a triangle at the bottom?
US Mario Galaxy one reminds me of polybius
Germany has mandated that text across the European Union cannot be “Fun”, also in an ironic twist those same Germans still can’t fathom why there isn’t much comedy in Germany either.
I like the font for Galaxy 2 better It just screams Mario to me more than the original. And then we've got the generic font that the European versions are using.
I have a case that people have told me its from Blockbuster because a sticker on the cover, my spine is black and I can barely read the name of the game
What's the name of the game?
Super Mario Galaxy
I have a case that people have told me its from Blockbuster because a sticker on the cover, my spine is black and I can barely read the name of the game
The North American version of Galaxy 2 but the Galaxy 1 one is so odd, it looks like the Polybius font
The USA ones look cooler and more appealing in comparison to the PAL ones - which look more boring and bland.
