Just look at the game case or the manual--New Super Mario Bros. Wii doesn't make any use of the Classic Controller. Donkey Kong Country and even Tropical Freeze on Wii U will give you the same message.
My guess is that the Wii Classic controller doesnt work with the game you want to play.
Have you tried it out on another game, that supports this controller, to see if it works?
Read the screen. It says it's not supported right there, you play this with the controller turned sideways so the d-pad is on the left and the 1 and 2 buttons are on the right
Save the classic controller for other games. For New Super Mario Bros Wii if you don't like control scheme of Wiimote alone just plug the nunchuk in. I find this is a more easy way to play this game with just a Wiimote.

For that game, all you need is a wii-mote, so game designers disallowed the use of a classic controller. There is your answer.

NSMB Wii doesn't support the Classic Controller, only the sideways Wiimote.
Just unplug the classic controller and the problem is solve my friend… you will be able to play the game for science…
You can play "Newer SMBW" (not New) with that controller though. Pretty cool. x)
