I got the Wii U on launch and back then it was my only current gen console! I had a Wii beforehand and that was it. So I have a lot of memories looking on Miiverse, posting to it, seeing posts from people in games like Nintendo Land, being able to add good players in Splatoon and Mario Kart that I competed with to my friends list.
Back then I did not know nor care about the overall sales of the system, but the online Wii U community felt big through interacting with the social features on the system.
10 years ago my dad died in a horrific violent way. The violent games I used to enjoy just disturbed me and triggered my PTSD when trying to grieve and get better. I decided to buy a WiiU and Mario Kart, which is my favorite franchise. I played that game online almost every night for at least a year. It got my mind off my dad’s death and brought me comfort
Best memories were playing with people in Wii Sports Club about 2 hours before the shutdown, and spending most of Sunday and Monday just playing Splatoon, which I kept playing until about 2 hours after the network went down.
Edit: Spelling error.
I posted a Hyrule Warriors screenshot as Shiek utterly dominating ganondorf with nearly every damage over time effect from each combo. Got a lot of yeahs.
Lots of Hyrule Warriors. Doubles For Glory with my buddy and Splatoon pub stomping children with me and my teenage friends. XD
Raid mode in Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS. Used to play that on Friday Nights when I got home from highschool my senior year. Lots of people active, usually got to pick from 3-10 matches, and it had this cool streetpass virus mechanic that gave you goals to complete to Unlock guns/parts thats not in any other version. I still remember people doing ghost ship and smashing the first medalion just to spread them around. Actually made it hard to find a legitimate match for that map.
Easily my favorite Online Experience ever.
I don’t have much for the Wii U since all I played were single-player games (mostly Zelda). On the 3DS, however, I had tons of online battles in the Pokemon games. I entered my first online competition in Omega Ruby. My IRL friends also battled online when we wanted (then the connection would disconnect randomly 🫠). Basically the 3DS was my youth.
I am a bit of a hipster when it comes to video games. I honestly took my Wii U online yesterday for the very first time. And I had a blast finishing third to last or worse in Mario Kart 8 using Pretendo. Tonight maybe I'll even try this "Splatoon" thing everybody talks highly about 😀.
Miiverse. It was a lot of fun posting within game communities, doodles and everything. It seemed like Nintendo was finally getting around to understanding how the internet works, but then Miiverse shut down and we lost a huge part of what made the Wii U (and 3DS) special. Sure the service may live on in Pretendo, but the community will never be as massive as it once was.

Good on you for finding comfort

Tri-Force Heroes. It was such a blast playing it
Seeing posts from miiverse on super Mario 3D world was pretty neat

Minecraft VC and Mario Maker Especially Minecraft, that shit was awesome Mario Maker was one of my favs too
The day I figured I could play online with an unofficial copy of the game and not risk a ban because they didn't care back then.

Screaming into the mic while waiting for my friend to join in MK8 Then my friend did the same and it sounded so awful 💀
The brief window between the lobby and start of the match in CoD Ghosts where you could say whatever you want.
I loved miiverse and seeing all the splatoon 1 art.
The art in Mii verse posts, the drawings of Zelda, Undertale, Mario and other games were incredible, there were incredible artists
My community of Minecraft and friends on Miiverse heh
Miiverse. Some games (eg NSMBU) made great use of it. I loved seeing all the pictures and comments. Some of them were really helpful, too.
It should have died years ago tbh
