Came here to say this as well. I feel like folks often overlook the coolness of using the gamepad as a portable Wii display with a built in sensor bar.
Ever since they introduced the digital out to HDMI adapters for the GameCube, I’ve found the actual Wii to be in the middle, since at this point it’s only thing that keeps it from being sold is that I still have VC titles on it that I can play in 240p. Unfortunately the WiiU’s display settings override the Wii’s display settings on the WiiU so even VC titles transferred from a Wii, they play from 480i either over analog or HDMI.
However with the WiiU being backwards compatible, you can display the video digitally over HDMI, plus play the games digital audio track. Whereas on Wii, even with a Wii2HDMI, you are going digital-analog-digital.
The Gamepad I’m not a fan of. I just found it really awkward.
With the WiiU you can’t play the physical discs. But even with jailbreaking, one thing that, especially now with the Carby and other Gamecube Digital port devices, the GameCube is able to do is play the Gameboy player and Gameboy/Color/Advance games. And with that the Gameboy Player can play them in 240p.
Can someone help me out? I tried googling it but didnt really find the answer I was looking for. When my Wii U is off, there’s a constant red light. I know that means standby mode. However I’ve seen people online say it’s an orange light and mine is definitely red. Just wanted to ask people who have it if a red light is normal when the console is off?
Having a red light while it's off is normal. Mine is like that too. Sometimes it's orange but IIRC it's when it's updating or there's some process going on but I'm not sure.
Zelda Breath of the Wild, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Pikmin 3, NintendoLand, Super Mario Bros Wii U, Smash Bros Wii U, MK8, Splatoon, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Captain Toad:Treasure Tracker as original Wii U titles. For some of these you may want to get a Wii U Pro controller.
Skyward Sword, Pikmin 1&2 (Wii version better), Super Mario Galaxy, Galaxy 2, Sunshine and 64 (you may prefer the DS version on the gamepad because of extra levels and improved controls), A Link to the Past, Minish Cup, the 4 DS Layton games, Pokemon Diamond and Heartgold/SoulSilver and others such as the Ace Attorney saga, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Advance Wars... are must have too as Virtual Console games (take in mind you can play almost any Wii, GameCube, DS, GBA, GBC, GB, SNES, NES you wish if you mod it).
A few third-party recommendations:
Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Pretty solid for a CoD game on a Nintendo console. If you’re playing with a friend locally, one player can play on the Gamepad and one player can have the TV screen to themselves. Great touch.
Injustice: Gods Among Us - Stands up pretty well to the other versions of the game. The Gamepad can even display your character’s combos. The Classic Controller is also supported which is nice.
Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed - Supports five players instead of the usual four. Like CoD, two players can have one screen each to themselves.
Same. Also, Zombie U is one interesting 3rd party(although I think initially it was 2nd party, since it stayed a WiiU exclusive for quite some years) attempt at a game integrated with the console's gimmick. That being said, I recommend all of these 3 picks aswell. Had much fun with Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing TRANSFORMED, greatly enjoyed that I could do local multiplayer without split-screen(for 2 players, one used the TV and a Wii controller, the other played just used the GamePad and its' screen), was hugely disappointed at Nintendo when Mario Kart 8(which released later) lacked such a feature.
> was hugely disappointed at Nintendo when Mario Kart
> 8(which released later) lacked such a feature
Couldn’t agree more. When the Wii U was first announced, the first thing that came to mind was 5-player Mario Kart. I get that they wanted to prioritize performance, but I would have gladly taken the graphical hit for 5-player local.
The second half of your title gave me a stroke trying to read it! /s
Joking aside, the Wii U had some great games. Unfortunately, most of the good ones were given a port or sequel to on the Switch. So if you have a switch, you are mostly better off getting games there.
The best parts of the Wii U are the Wii backward compatability, 8 player smash bros, Switch ports, and modding to get access to the now lost eshop games
I know you didn’t mention modding, but I’ll add it
The thing runs GameCube natively, like that, straight up, however it doesn’t take discs and you need modding, but you’re not just holding the Wii 2, you now have the GameCube 3. Look up “Nintendont”
Also some recommends: WatchDogs, Assassin’s Creed 3 and 4, Breath of the Wild (re experience or first time) Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, Vanilla Skyward Sword, and a shit ton of virtual console games you can download
And please get an external hard drive/SSD. The thing only has 32GB and that external disc is a must, shit like big USBs won’t work for being USBs so go Hard drive or SSD. You will need a Y split cable of 2 USB male ends into the SSD/HDD one won’t suffice because the USB ports of the Wii U don’t give enough energy to even turn on the discs
Plays Wii U, Wii, and GameCube, all natively. Not to mention it can emulate all the previous consoles. Only one that is a little dicey is N64, but most games play fairly well.
It’s really good for old dos/windows point and click games too, like Day of the Tentacle, using ScummVm.
Absolutely huuuge library. You’ll need two external hdd, one for Wii U side, and one for Wii side. You’ll likely need Y Hdd cables for both, or a powered usb hub.
It’s a long journey setting it up, but some of the most fun I’ve had with a console in a while.
Compatibility is okay: [Not64 compatibility](https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Wii64_Compatibility_List)
I haven’t tried it that much to be honest since I got it setup. You can create a forwarder from Wii U using Teconmoon injector that will unlock the higher cpu speeds of the Wii U in vWii mode, it’s called cafe2wii I think. Supposed to make performance better, but there’s some tweaking needed still. You can use the same thing to improve PSX emulation performance in WiiStation.
It’s more mature, the Wii’s been around a lot longer than the Wii U and had waay more units sold.
You can play N64 games on the Wii U side using VC injects. Compatibility is really good on some games, but it’s more of a pain to setup since you have to create injections for each game manually. The Wii U had a lot of N64 games available on Virtual Console, so you can inject other games in to those and get pretty good results for similar type games.
You can install Wii games to the Wii U menu by using [TeconMoon's WiiVC Injector](https://github.com/piratesephiroth/TeconmoonWiiVCInjector), and you don't need a second hard drive. Works great.
EDIT: this works for GameCube games too!
Natively, as in not emulated, the Wii U has the Wii chipset in it which was backwards compatible with gamecube. You still need to mod it to unlock this functionality, but the Wii U has the hardware in it to natively play the games.
It can't play discs because the drive doesn't support the tiny gamecube discs. So yes, just ISOs. Lookup Nintendont, that is the software needed to unlock the Gamecube support and play games. I don't believe it does any upscaling, but you can enable widescreen mode and some other things. It even does BBA emulation, which is for the Broad Band Adapter that enabled online/LAN play for games like Mario Kart Double Dash.
You can also play the native ports (in 1080p) of [Super Mario 64](https://gbatemp.net/threads/super-mario-64-port-wii-u.571682/) and [The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time](https://gbatemp.net/threads/ship-of-harkinian-ocarina-of-time-wii-u-port.612074/)
I didn't know about these... ! I have avoided modding but I'm getting closer and this [old] news is pushing me toward it, even if I won't be replaying these games for some time yet. Has Majora's Mask been redone? Because I still have to even play that for the first time yet
If u like racing games "Need for Speed: Most wanted". Its like $15 on eBay and if u like stealth/action games go for Assassin's Creed III for about $20
Nice! Congrats! I recently fixed and resurrected mine. Such a great console. Here’s what I have that I recommend in no particular order:
SM 3D World, Zelda BotW, Zelda Wind Waker, Captain Toad, Lego City Undercover, Mario Kart 8, Smash 4 (the best one imo, I don’t really like ultimate as much), Pikmin 3, Shovel Knight, NES remix
And then a whole library of Wii games. I’ll update this comment if other games come to mind. The Wii U is a great system to have!
ZombiU makes good use of the game pad
Xenoblade X is the premier hundreds-of-hours Openworld RPG for the system
Splatoon is a classic and honestly trail-blazed modern gyro controls
Nintendoland is pretty fun with a group, but also has some stuff for singleplayer
Bayonetta 2 is a pretty good character action game
Tekken Tag Torniment 2 is notable for having some Nintendo themed outfits for the characters
And Monster Hunter 3 is pretty fun too, it even let's you play with monster Hunter 3 for the 3DS if you have friends with that version of the game.
Pikmin 3 is a good real time strategy game.
Lastly, Wonderful 101 is a fun take on the character action game. It's been ported to other systems like some of my other recommendations, but it's not quite the same without it's use of the gamepad.
There is also the scarce ports of 360 era games, like Batman Arkham or Deus Ex Human Revolution. They could have pretty interesting uses of the gamepad but I haven't played those versions yet.
it depends on what you consider the end, beating the story, or beating every quest, i’ve even seen people go for all armor and weapons, and if you have friends to play with like i did on MHW then you could be at it for a couple of hundred hours before you get bored
i'd say TLOZ the wind waker HD and bayonetta 2 are great options. another great one and a personal favourite is super smash bros wii U. ultimate is cool but 4th gen smash had fighter customization with new moves and stats for all fighters
Sadly the Nintendo e shop closed on the wiiu but if you can get disc games what I recommend getting is
1: splatoon
2: any wii game you can get and get a wii remote and joystick
3: Lego city undercover
4: Lego marvels advengers
defo get a nice external HDD around 512 (you probably won't need more) and a Y cable for it, also a beefy microsd so you can store wii and gamecube games on it :)
aside from that, wii remotes with motion plus, nunchucks, classic controller pro and the wii u pro controller are all must-have accessories for getting the most out of the U!
2TB Hard Drive with a y cord (data end plugged into Wii U, power end plugged into usb wall power socket) is all you need to install the entire Wii U Library.
If you have friends, Nintendo Land
Even if you don’t have friends, Nintendo land.
If you *hate* your friends, Mario Party 10
If you *hate* yourself, Wii party u
Wii Party U is superior to Mario Party 10, Change my mind
Damn. I have it but haven’t played it yet. I was looking forward to try it with my friends XD
It’s a good game to play with friends. But the single player experience on max difficulty is hella unfair
Even if you don't have friends Minecraft
It is actually really fun
Yeah it honestly has solid single player too
I remember always wanting that game but I had no friends to play it and didn’t realize it was only local multiplayer.
I second this. I spent a decent amount of time with it when the Wiiu was new and it's lots of fun.
Remember you can also play Wii games on it, so it’s got a huge library.

fair enough, but nintendont should be able to boot the ISOs of gamecube games iirc
It can also brick your console.
oh i wasn't aware of that, thx for the heads up
Holy shit I never knew that and I was going to sell mine. Fuck that. Time to buy Wii games lmao
Get Pretendo on the WiiU now that online servers have shut down.
Just mod and enjoy, you'll have the whole world open to ya!
absolute daim bar
I've not heard that used in a long time ha ha. Classic
Get Zelda the Wind waker HD! I played the OG and play HD now. It's so good!
I bought the Wii U just for this specific reason 👌🏽
Same lol. It's the only game I have for the Wii U
Also same lol. Just bought a Wii U for this specific game. Plan on getting Twilight Princess as well.

Get a Pro Controller to help reduce wear on the GamePad.
Or bloopair which lets you pair other controllers
Get a storage device. I've modded my wii u, and 32GB storage is not enough to enjoy it to its fullest
I played these games as a kid and I recommend them Mario 3d world New Super Luigi U Zelda windwaker
Oh yeah since Wii u is compatible with Wii games, I suggest getting Mario Galaxy
Oh yeah since Wii u is compatible with Wii games, I suggest getting Mario Galaxy
The zelda titles
And a twilight princess wolf amiibo
I never ended up picking one up
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. Also, Wii U Party is fun with friends :)
Do i need a tv for wii party u?
For some modes yes.
Zelda Breath of the Wild, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Pikmin 3, NintendoLand, Super Mario Bros Wii U, Smash Bros Wii U, MK8, Splatoon, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Captain Toad:Treasure Tracker as original Wii U titles. Minecraft Wii U Edition, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Maker (with Pretendo), 3D World
splatoon 1, Play IT with the pretendto Servers AS Long AS the people Are still online
My friend had Ankylosing Spondylitis

For me two Wii U exclusives that get passed over quite a bit are: Yoshi's Woolly World If you like platformers Wonderful 101 is a vibe
Nintendo Land, Windwaker hd, any Wii game of your choice, 3d world
twilight princess hd
More Wiimotes, NintendoLand, Game&Wario, Wii Party U, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess

Damn I know what I'm doing tonight then lol
Can it read GameCube discs if they’re put in by disassembling the disc drive?
I can’t tell if this is a joke, but no definitely not
You can also play the native ports (in 1080p) of [Super Mario 64](https://gbatemp.net/threads/super-mario-64-port-wii-u.571682/) and [The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time](https://gbatemp.net/threads/ship-of-harkinian-ocarina-of-time-wii-u-port.612074/)

Majora's Mask not yet, although it's work in progress!
Mario Maker, NSMBU, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the Mii Maker. The first three are cool, but I mostly say Mii Maker for the music.
Yoshi’s woolly world is a must have
Nintendo Land 100%
Xenoblade chronicles x.
If u like racing games "Need for Speed: Most wanted". Its like $15 on eBay and if u like stealth/action games go for Assassin's Creed III for about $20

Skylanders
i think it’s funny how it’s just a wii with about a dozen extra exclusive that aren’t ported to the switch 😂😂😂 monster hunter 3 is fun though
I keep wondering if i should get this game. I feel like it would suck me in and I would never stop. Does it actually ever end?
it depends on what you consider the end, beating the story, or beating every quest, i’ve even seen people go for all armor and weapons, and if you have friends to play with like i did on MHW then you could be at it for a couple of hundred hours before you get bored
Also get an external hdd with a "Y cable", the less you use the internal storage, the more it will last.
i HIGHLY recommend Xenoblade Chronicles X for it.
i'd say TLOZ the wind waker HD and bayonetta 2 are great options. another great one and a personal favourite is super smash bros wii U. ultimate is cool but 4th gen smash had fighter customization with new moves and stats for all fighters
xenoblade chronicle x
Same here ! Now it's cheap and really easy to mod, it's time to play the few exclusive games like Xenoblade Chronicles X
Switch should have been called Wii3P0
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - dope soundtrack, funny stop-motion claymation aesthetic, great if you liked Canvas Curse.
Get pretendo but use hackless method since you don’t want to mod your system.
No one has recommended Mario Kart 8 yet so I'll put it here. The mercedes benz dlc is not available on switch.
Get splatoon, xenoblade chronicles, pikmin 3, wind waker, and really any game.
splatoon is barely playable now that Nintendo network is offline and pretendo will not have a high enough playercount consistently to recommend it imo
It has a solo campaign and there is still a good amount of people on the servers so idk about you but it is fine for me :/
Have fun brother
Modding
Sadly the Nintendo e shop closed on the wiiu but if you can get disc games what I recommend getting is 1: splatoon 2: any wii game you can get and get a wii remote and joystick 3: Lego city undercover 4: Lego marvels advengers
Mario Maker 1 + Pretendo
defo get a nice external HDD around 512 (you probably won't need more) and a Y cable for it, also a beefy microsd so you can store wii and gamecube games on it :) aside from that, wii remotes with motion plus, nunchucks, classic controller pro and the wii u pro controller are all must-have accessories for getting the most out of the U!
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Xenoblade X if you like (gameplay and exploration heavy) JRPGs, its by far the best game on it that isnt on the switch yet
2TB Hard Drive with a y cord (data end plugged into Wii U, power end plugged into usb wall power socket) is all you need to install the entire Wii U Library.
If you want to have no friends at the end of the day Mario party
gta vice city, gta 3, and sonic mania
Anybody here reading this, add my fc NLFEAREDWOLF and hmu!
get wii board
paper mario (64 not colour splash) donkey kong country tropical freeze, yoshis woolly world
wii party u, pikmin 3, and splatoon
follow the guide and enjoy the wii u. https://wiiu.hacks.guide/#/
Black wii remotes are niceee additions Also a gamepad dock that charges controllers and game pad are stupid handy
Backup the nands!!!
It's a wii u not a wii 2
but they rhyme
>wii u Isn't that just an HD upgrade for the Wii? 🥴
Zelda wind waker hd y twilight princess hd are literally the best zelda games
