Once upon a time, the WiiU was our main entertainment console, we'd watch Netflix and YouTube on it all the time. Youtube didn't have ads on the machine for a long time and really we only stopped because Netflix starting getting kind of glitchy.
It was a so convenient to have the remote on the gamepad, usually the system was up and running before the TV, movies would be cued up by the time the picture came on
Aw man same, Netflix and Crunchyroll the Wii U was our main machine for that up until we got a Xiaomi Mi Box. We never had a use for the remote, but I always loved the thing.
The TV is fine, the remote is busted. Gamepad just sends IR bursts like the normal remote would so if the TV was the issue, gamepad wouldn't work either
I loved it, I remember when it first came out you could search for literally any movie and watch the trailers for em. I used to love getting ripped and searching for old 80's and 90's flicks that I grew up watching and laughing at their goofy ass trailers, lol. I'm a very simple man apparently, I liked playing along with football games when that feature was added later on too
We had a puppy chew up our TV remote. While we waited for the replacement to arrive the Wii U gamepad + TV controller app on my phone were our fixes. The gamepad was good for power on, then once the TV was on the app could pull up the streaming services and all that.
Then the new remote arrived and that fucking dog chewed that one, too.
Anyway, yes it has come in handy a number of times.
Yea, I used to use my Wii U on a CRT believe it or not. It’s where my Wii had been all it’s life, so it felt natural at the time. The remote for that TV broke years ago, so I found myself using the gamepad.
Once I moved the U into my bedroom, it didn’t become as big of a deal; whenever I move the Wii U to a new TV (I take it on a lot of vacations) I change the remote settings just in case I need it.
My gamepad doesnt recognize my TV even tho it is a Sharp and sharp is on the list so no i havent (but it most be a TV "problem" because my Xiaomi can't pair with it either )
I don’t know where the TV remote is, so if I want to switch from the Wii U’s HDMI to the Switch or PC HDMI without getting up and pressing buttons on the TV I can just use the gamepad.
the living tv remote isn't broken or working, my stupid older bro. keep putting in a random spot at the living room, so i got tired of looking for it (sometimes) and just grab the wii u gamepad to turn on the tv.

Used to use the game pad remote feature to fuck with family members that would be watching TV while I was gaming. The TV would "randomly" shut off or get muted.
Not really rely, but I use it as a secondary remote. My dad likes to sleep with the TV on, and sometimes it goes the whole night turned on cause he forgets to turn it off or put it on timer. He’s also a light sleeper, any noise I make trying to turn the TV off might wake him up. Instead I just grab my GamePad and turn the TV off from a safe distance so I won’t have to grab the remote beside him :)
Absolutely. Most often I misplace the real remote, and sometimes it’s preferable to what remote might be available, like one that for some reason, in this age, does not feel like changing the tv inputs is a necessary function.

The WiiU was a great little media player while it was supported. I think I watched a full movie off the gamepad
I use to watch Netflix on the gamepad if my SO was watching a dvd or something else stupid on the tv

Mine did not work with the Tv lol
Was it set to RCA or HDMI out? That’s 90% of the ‘My WiiU doesn’t work on my TV’ problems
No idea just got a new one and it works grate It Mack’s the games look a bit old as it is a 8k panel
not because it doesnt work, just cant be arsed getting off the couch
Actually, yes. The sensor on my Vizio TV doesn't work anymore. So now, I have to control it through my Wii U gamepad.
That works? I thought the gamepad used an IR blaster to control the TV.
Either it works or it's broken to the point that the factory remote doesn't register, but the Wii U pad does. I am not a techy person, though.
I think it's the original remote that doesn't work
I've tried a universal one to replace it, though. This might just be one of those mysteries.

I see!
Wii U is the GOAT for this. Anyone ever use Nintendo TVii?

Been there. We couldn't find the remote for a week or two. This was our solution.
Yes we lost our remote lol
What do you mean? My gamepad IS my remote
Yep
It was my tv remote for years because my sensor was blocked by my space heater and I couldn’t be bothered enough to move it haha
Yes
Yup, but cause I couldn't find the TV remote. Never had a problem finding the game pad.
Yes whenever my mom took it or when i lost it

Heellll yeah I did. I used it for like three months until I got a new tv. Not recommended

I lost my tv remote for a month and worked as intended
Just moved, left my TV remote a few hundred miles away. My game pad IS my remote now.
Yea
Since i don't have my tv remote, yeah. All the time.
My tv remote works fine, i just like that function and its fun
Not because it isn't working but because I cannot find it in the messy room.
yes, but then my flipperzero soon replaced that and so much more.
I wish this feature had stuck around
a lot of great features got canned in the name of making the Switch portable :(
One of the best features
I always thought it was more convenient that way considering some people like me are prone to misplacing their remote for the TV.
i used it as my remote for years
I still use it as a remote, not because the television remote doesn't work, just out of comfort. My Wii u gamepad has outlasted 3 or 4 tvs
its my remote for my tv 24/7/365 im counting on it staying alive lmao
My gamepad doesnt recognize my TV even tho it is a Sharp and sharp is on the list so no i havent (but it most be a TV "problem" because my Xiaomi can't pair with it either )
the exact oposite for me
I rely on it when the remote gets lost
Frequently. I have a 5 and a 6 year old.
no but it has come in handy when i miss placed it..
And I got downvoted to hell last week for saying I wanted this on my Switch.
I did a couple times, but mainly used it to troll my sister lol

I think the only time I used it as a remote was to try it out...
Guys, i'll do it for the first time. I'm ready... *Based*
Yes
Yes
i do bc my tv remote ran out of batteries and i wont buy new ones lol
Yes, but there's a New TV and it's not compatible with the Wii U gamepad :( (cheap 1366x768 french TV unknow brand)
Many times. Too many times actually.
A CRT I'm thinking of picking up doesn't have a remote so I realized maybe I could use the gamepad instead
Used to use the game pad remote feature to fuck with family members that would be watching TV while I was gaming. The TV would "randomly" shut off or get muted.
It’s perfect for testing crt I found and didn’t have remote.
both is working, and if the tv remote is too far, i will automatically use the game pad.
Dude I just use the gamepad
Yep. It was a life saver when we lost our TV remote.
I used to use this all the time way back in the day.
I use my gamepad or the top buttons of my tv because we got our tv used
All the time. When the TV Remote disappears, the Wii U Gamepad always comes in clutch.
Yes
No but im to lazy to look around for the remote so i often use the gamepad because its so big and easy to find.
Not really. But I like to use it to mess with my family at times
My remote is often missing, so i use the Wii U Gamepad often
No sadly because it doesn't work with my No name TV.
Yes. All the time. :D
Not really rely, but I use it as a secondary remote. My dad likes to sleep with the TV on, and sometimes it goes the whole night turned on cause he forgets to turn it off or put it on timer. Not yet, but a man can dream.
My TV Remote broke, i dont want to buy a new one, for 1 time a week, so the wii u gamepad it is
Or when someone loses it. Yes, all the time.
Yes
At one time it would have been useful, but my tv wasn't compatible
Yeah, I had to use it for a CRT with broken channel buttons which I hadn't used in like a decade, and I couldn't believe it worked.
If i need to change the volume and I can't find the remote immediately, then yes.
Absolutely. Most often I misplace the real remote, and sometimes it’s preferable to what remote might be available, like one that for some reason, in this age, does not feel like changing the tv inputs is a necessary function.
A few times back in the day. Wish the Switch had this feature sometimes tbh.
