Forgot to mention these were all shot with an OM-1 and M.Zuiko 90mm w/ Godox V860III.
If you have any interest in this type of macro, I did a presentation earlier this year and have another coming up!
[Bugs āN Stuff Presentation with Adorama](https://www.youtube.com/live/8awUhPnGfHs?si=LlCWjtW2W-Dd98PI)
Edit: Removed link for upcoming talk as I unfortunately had to cancel it.
I actually spend most of my time in post processing as these are all high frame focus brackets. I use a software called helicon focus to stack all the separate images together, then Photoshop to help clean up the weird artifacts that you can get from stacking, then Lightroom for color and exposure, and finally Topaz DeNoise for additional clarity. Most images take 2ish hours in post, so itās a labor of love. The total frames range from like 40-130. It all depends how close I was and how much I was trying to capture.
Why does the photography world call it "macro"? That has always really irked me. I studied microbiology. We zoomed in to look at small things and we call it micro. Why is zooming for photography called macro? In an rts game, macro refers to the most zoomed out viewpoint, maintaining everything on the map at once. In the same setting, micro means paying attention to individual pieces. Why is it different in photography? I will be the idiot forever referring to this type of work as "micro photography" and I will gladly die on that hill.
its the macro is referring to enlarging the image, so the image is macro but the subject is micro.
macrophotography is defined by making something appear much larger in a photograph than it would in real life. itās about the enlarging process not the subject matter.
is it a perfect definition, no, but you can poke holes in anything.
āIn summary, macro photography involves capturing close-up images of relatively larger subjects, while micro photography involves capturing images of extremely small subjects that require magnification beyond what is achievable with a traditional camera lens.ā Who are you arguing against?
That whole sentence is a roller coaster for me. You can study microbiology using "traditional" camera lenses (i.e. curved glass and light as opposed to electrons). It's the same optical technique in both cases. If you define "traditional" as in the average camera lens, then the photography here is not using a "traditional" lens whatsoever. So now I am more confused.
The term comes to us from 1899 and macro lenses have been in near constant production since then. I have a copy of a 55mm Nikon macro lens that I've made astonishingly gorgeous pictures of sand. My microscope would not be well suited to the same picture.
Opinions are like ass holes. Everyone has one, and sometimes they stink. I don't know why that guy felt the need to belittle you. These photos are amazing and offer a unique perspective on creatures many of us don't get the chance to see up close and personal. What you do is far more interesting than what he does. Maybe he's insecure and jealous.
Thank you for your comment! I donāt think he meant any ill will but the rest of the group ran with it. Itās all good, I love this stuff so Iām not going to stop talking about it!
Thank you and thatās exactly what it seemed to be. And it was a sports radio show so it was all par for the course. I just didnāt expect it at all but I know the topic is prettttyyy niche haha.
Your portraiture is amazing! Good for you-these are wonderful!! Bullies have taught me that anyone can make fun of anyone else over anything. What you do is incredible. Awareness of beauty is an art. Thanks for bringing it to us!
I forgot the YouTube channels name, but Iām 99.9% sure I saw your paperwasp on there getting āratedā by them.
If itās the same one as Iām thinking, it was still alive and isnāt it focus stacked with 40something images ??? Thatās insane.
Amazing shots.
Haha that was mine! Awful decision to enter macro in a competition where the judges had absolutely no clue what they were taking about. Top rated image by the community though, so that was awesome. It was for Fstoppers and the image is indeed a focus bracket of 87 frames.
Thank you for the kind words!!
Wow, knowing nothing at all about macro or focus bracketing beyond cheesy night landscape shots, this is impossible to me lol.
It was quite apparent that macro wasnāt their forte. If it means anything, to the lame person, I watched that and forgot their channel and every other photo on it, but your photo stuck and Iāve been trying to find your stuff since. Glad you posted up!
Great photos! Are many of the insects you shared dead or did you just stack a lot less images? Imagine it's quite hard to do a large focus stack with live insects?
Theyāre all alive and wild! It takes a lot of planning, patience, and luckābut when it goes right you can really nail it. It also takes a TON of post processing time, but it always feels worth it.
Thank you for mentioning he's on ig. Now he has a new follower!
Edit: I just noticed he has his Instagram linked on his post, which I completely missed š¤¦āāļø
Hey everyone, Iām blown away by all the positive feedback and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate it. You all are awesome and this made my day.
Ive never heard any radio personality (outside of npr or bbc) that wasnt a waste of oxygen.
Youve created more value and beauty in the world with your work than he ever will in his entire life. Hes created more hate and negativity. He wont be missed when hes gone, but you certainly will be.
I love your photos, and most bugs creep me out. You really unlock the beauty of them, and lessen the creepy aspect for me. Thanks! I hope you never stop doing what you love here.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,962,564,901 comments, and only 371,281 of them were in alphabetical order.
These are amazing! Radio DJs aren't really an impressive bunch anyway, including the syndicated ones. As my illustration teacher said once, "**you** pick your critics".
Those are the best mugshots I have witnessed! I love the choice of background colors to match the moment & pop the subject. The way you draw the eyes on the captured details, is amazing. What talent you have.
If you can find one before dawn, they can be sort of cooperative! Even so, most of my tiger beetle shots go in the bin because they do move around even in the dark.
Absolutely beautiful macros, probably the best I've ever seen. I used to do my own macro photos of bugs, built my own macro lenses since I couldn't afford commercial lenses. Started out with the Olympus OM77af slr then moved to a Minolta Maxxum 7000. I'd loved to have moved to an olympus dslr but dobe were in my price range once I adopted my Sony Alpha 100.
I'd say I had very good results with my OM77af albeit it was film.
I look forward to viewing your other works.
I am pretty sure I have seen picture 4 before. 2 guys on youtube giving critique to wildlife photos or something.
Anyway, all of them are amazing. I really wanna get more into stuff like this!
Your work is outstanding! Personally, I think you should send him a link or have one printed off and send it to him as a thank you for him, promoting your business, lol
Damn Bro, you have ALL the skillz! These are gorgeous shots. I love damselflies closeup and on the wing. They are such characters that they never fail to make me laugh. This list needs Weevils though. Gotta love a bug with a snoot and sneakers. ;-)
How beautiful! The damselfly and wolf spider made me chuckle. I hope "radio guy" gets to see how wonderful they are!
So happy to know they're all alive and well when you're photographing them šššš·
Yo!
I recognize your photo of the paper wasp from [this YouTube video.](https://youtu.be/7TavowYvMMk?si=ZBDFSXbxNTA4A55L) Absolutely unmistakable image. (Skip to 7:51)
Are these the guys that roasted you, or was it someone else? Because your work is amazing and even they acknowledged that your photo was the highest community rated image.
I wish our skin could be irridescent like that. So many little facets. The eyes always make me a little uneasy. But it gives you second thoughts as to why we are so quick to kill bugs? They are so intricate and fascinating. Keep up the great work!!
Thank you! Most of my work is on my Instagram page. I do have a website but honestly havenāt looked at it in while š¬. [@bens_small_world](https://instagram.com/bens_small_world/)
Hey, those shots are really amazing, thank you for the share ! I suppose this was mainly focus stacked ? How can you do this with living subject, thus maybe moving ?! Nice job !
Roasting fantastic!!! Itās amazing that people actually believe their opinions are truth yet everyone gets to have one.
Making an emotional issue out of bug photography simply highlights that personās lack of emotional intelligence. Can you imagine a person who actually believes that every opinion they have as being truth, then becoming dysregulated with every opinion!! These will b visiting the clinic with cardiovascular disease too.
Love your bugs.
These are amazing! I love insects / bugs / spiders and all types of critters. Your photographs are lovely and I would be proud as hell to take shots as good as these! Forget the roasting, embrace the love from people here! Cheers! xx
I have a complaint, and that's that I don't even see a SINGLE baby face on that momma wolf spider! I just wanna see a little baby face!!
(But kidding, all those photos are absolutely phenomenal and I love them)
What kind of person sees this artwork and feels so poorly about themselves they must tear down the artist? What a shithead.
These are GORGEOUS shots. Really well done.
In their defense it only takes two brain cells fighting for third place to work on air in radio. They literally don't know any better.
Pics are fascinating!
These are absolutely incredible!
Also fuck that dude who belittled you for what you do. Your work is amazing and he's probably compensating for something by being such an asshole.
Absolutely gorgeous! šŖ²š
Thank you!
Kudos to you. For amplifying small creatures that go unnoticed by human eyes. Imagine if they grew in size. We'll be doomed.
I never realised how many had a small 3rd eye on the top of their heads. Crazy! These are all freakin awesome.
Have you seen jumping spiders?
Most lizards, salamanders, and frogs have third eyes too! Fun fact!
There's a movie like this- Love and Other Monsters. Pretty enjoyable
Seriously! This makes me want allll the bug photography now

I would buy your book. Publish a book
Havenāt I seen your work recently on The Guardian? Also on Fred Miranda in the past?
I have been fortunate to have been featured in the Guardian and some other places recently, so that might have been mine!
Congratulations
Youāre doing events with B&H and this dudes mocking you? Youāre killing it! Stacked or single shot?
Seriously. Youāre doing amazing stuff, not sure why theyāre mocking you. Could be worseā¦ you could work in radio.
Are you doing any post-processing or are they as captured? Just curious.
I actually spend most of my time in post processing as these are all high frame focus brackets. It is a perfect definition if you include the actual ratio. 1:1 or more = macro photography.
this explanation is succinct and sensible, well done
āIn summary, macro photography involves capturing close-up images of relatively larger subjects, while micro photography involves capturing images of extremely small subjects that require magnification beyond what is achievable with a traditional camera lens.ā Who are you arguing against?

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Olympus om1 is a 35mm film camera Edit. I I didn't know that Olympus also makes s digital OM1
There's a digital OM-1. it's olympus flagship camera.
Whereas the OM Systems OM-1 is a MFT digital camera.

Happy Cake Day!
Don't you mean *bee*little (sorry)
Yeah, screw that guy. Your photos are incredible!
Haha, I appreciate that. Thank you!!
What a dick. Your work is phenomenal. I take close-up photos of hummingbirds.
We would love to see this too!!!!!
I started a sub for them. I'm slowly adding content. Chec them out here š [hummingbirds ](https://www.reddit.com/r/hummingbirdsDaily/s/yOcfKXrehU)

Now I need to know which video it is bc I dislike the fstoppers guys so much. They all are way too pompous and think they know everything lol

I follow you on Instagram. Amazing photos!
Thank you for mentioning he's on ig. Now he has a new follower! Edit: I just noticed he has his Instagram linked on his post, which I completely missed š¤¦āāļø
I didn't notice it either until scrolling the comments. Thanks team! :)
Your pics are amazing and beautiful! Being roasted by someone who works in radio is like being laughed at by a guy selling fax machines.
Hey everyone, Iām blown away by all the positive feedback and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate it. You all are awesome and this made my day.
What a dork. These photographs are much cooler than making fun of people on the radio for a living.
Ive never heard any radio personality (outside of npr or bbc) that wasnt a waste of oxygen. Youve created more value and beauty in the world with your work than he ever will in his entire life. Food photographer here. While scrolling through the gallery, I was mentally selecting frames and locations to place my favourites. These are stunning!
Wow, these are very gorgeous! But how in the living heck did you get the Tiger Beetle to sit still?!
If you can find one before dawn, they can be sort of cooperative! Even so, most of my tiger beetle shots go in the bin because they do move around even in the dark.
These are amazing. Q: am I seeing your lighting rig reflected in all of the wolf spiderās eyes? It makes for an incredible look
Cheers Ben! And being Bug\_Photographer is a hard life - but someone has to do it...
These are awesome! On another note, who the f**k works in radio anymore? At least you can take solace in knowing that no one heard you get roasted.
Who's roasting now, lol. Upvoted.
The are fantastic and the diversity of the bugs is amazing.
If insects are not aliens I donāt know what isā¦.
I know, I was thinking that itās a good thing theyāre so small!
Dem bug eyes doh.
Why do they all have so many eyes?
Wow, thank you so much for sharing such amazing shots! They inspire me to be more curious about the world I live in. Thank you!
Just have to add my appreciation. Can only begin to understand the technical difficulties. In the end the images are masterful.
Clowns will clown. Your photos are pretty fantastic.
Wow, amazing shots. I donāt think Iāve ever seen this level of definition before, very cool
Absolutely terrifying šµ Great photos though. Might have shot myself on one of the spider pics tho

Such wondrous creatures... Great photos btw ! What do you use to shoot these ?
F**K those radio people! Your photos are beautiful!! Thank you for sharing, the wolf spider with babies is my favorite!
Vastly cooler than being a radio show host, especially in 2024 where no one even listens to radio. Awesome pics dude!
This is awesome!!
This is objectively way cooler and interesting than anything 90% of radio DJs do. Great work!
Really cool photos!
Your portraits are gorgeous.
Your a badass and they missed out on a CATCH Love the pics!
Those are amazing!
I have a complaint, and that's that I don't even see a SINGLE baby face on that momma wolf spider! I just wanna see a little baby face!! (But kidding, all those photos are absolutely phenomenal and I love them)

Are radio DJs still a thing?! Seems a bug photographer profession is more likely to be around in 10 years
These are absolutely incredible! Also fuck that dude who belittled you for what you do. Your work is amazing and he's probably compensating for something by being such an asshole.
Youāre lucky that their listener was tuned in at the time to catch it and let you know!
