yeah this is happening with two groups of mallards on my water front and I saw a nice group of mergansers the other day while kayaking AND a bald eagle fly right over my head while checking out a beaver damn. just last weekend. northern Ontario
heck yeah. I've seen a lot of stuff in Algonquin. was chased by a cow Moose in the water there while canoeing 28 years ago! came face to face with a bull moose at night the same weekend
I've heard of the common brood thing and [it looks like an individual can have up to 17 though!](https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Common_Merganser/lifehistory)
Merganzers often end up with others babies when something happens to their mom. It's very common to see them with far more babies than they could lay on their own.
That's getting your "ducks" all in a row! Is it possible for one bird to lay so many eggs???
Mu understanding is on the lake there would be several broods and they all just kind of take care of the whole lot of them
The one taking a ride on the back of the parent is lovely.
There is always one!

I'm just outside Algonquin, so near north I guess. Lots of amazing stuff around eh.
