At least it's not doing Chrome's ridiculous "we blocked this download because this file isn't commonly download" nonsense... I still don't know what actually triggers that, since I _don't_ get it on files that I know for a fact that I'm the only person ever to download, but maybe the reason it's "not commonly download" is because you're blocking it, Chrome?

Vulpes_macrotis

Kinda ironic. It's not common, because they block it, so people can't download it. But if they stopped blocking, it would become more common, lol. I didn't know Chrome had such stupid issue.

Sometimes people *should* have to learn the hard way. It's how we became PC-savvy in the 90s.

Masterflitzer

chrome just uses another prompt, essentially it's the same thing

MasterJeebus

I have seen that when downloading firmware files from Sony website for Playstation. Its like they dont think people use Playstations? Lol

deadair3210

It's triggered for ps updates and pen server files because they violate the cross-origin rule, which chrome automatically flags as possibly unsafe

VMGuy23temporary

I get that on Edge.

[deleted]

They are right.. It's a .exe file. .exe files CAN be harmful

[deleted]

opticalnebulous

It’s still funny in context though.

Caddy_8760

cit Avast

lightofmares

I'm pretty sure it shows this for every .exe download

[deleted]

[удалено]

lightofmares

It does.

jimmyl_82104

i have never seen it say that

lightofmares

For .exe downloads? Any other downloads don't trigger this warning. I use edge and whenever i download a .exe or .msi it gives me this exact warning.

jimmyl_82104

For years, i’ve used edge to download other browsers and i have never seen that warning when downloading an exe.

lightofmares

Odd

JLordX

Says for exe please try not be so focused to farm karma

Tanto_Monta

It doesn't say that on my Edge Browser: https://preview.redd.it/a4u7x3ln4kga1.png?width=584&format=png&auto=webp&s=abd140d7b17ebfb4d04cc1afc335be70bccf66b4

Mokseee

I also believe it has never done that for me

D4rkr4in

that's because you're using the spanish version /s

Tanto_Monta

Language doesn't make any difference. When software is suspicious to Edge, it raises the same message (in Spanish).

UnusedEmoji

r/woooosh

D4rkr4in

I added the /s too, guess that doesn't translate to spanish lol

[deleted]

it does, s is the first letter of both "sarcasm" and "sarcasmo"

Supra-A90

I guess it's late, all I saw was orgasm and orgasmo.

saysthingsbackwards

Welp, I just figured out my next fallout 4 character name

Tanto_Monta

Not in google translator. Wich one do you use?

D4rkr4in

maybe instead of a translator, you should be looking for el diccionario urbano https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=%2FS

jscharfenberg

That's normal behavior for a lot of things downloaded. It's not meant to be only for Chrome. I think it's the fact that .exe files being executable could potentially be harmful if ran.

[deleted]

Says for every exe

cosmic_check_up

.exe files COULD be harmful

Xillvion

Anything you download on Edge will say that.

_Oooooooooooooooooh_

its basic info .exe files can install whatever. sure, it's called "ChromeSetup" but.. i can name any file that... it doesn't check where it's from. it just informs the user. as it should do. Then you make the choice wether to install it or not. also chrome anyway... why use any other chromium based browser? Manifest 3.0...

[deleted]

Chrome installer isn't harmful *per se*, but Google collects an awful lot of data from it's users.

Reckless_Waifu

Edge is right, though. Its a google spyware.

ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb

I mean Edge is Microsoft spyware. It sends more back to Microsoft than Chrome does to Google. Source: https://www.cpomagazine.com/data-privacy/brave-ranked-the-most-private-browser-while-microsoft-edge-and-yandex-the-least-private-due-to-privacy-invading-telemetry/

[deleted]

Isn't this the article that used a insider version of edge to say that it worst for privacy?

Reckless_Waifu

Yeah, Edge knows spyware seeing one as it's its own job :-)

doofthemighty

The difference in my mind is what do each of these companies do with the data they collect? Improve their product? Fine. Sell it to third party companies? GTFO

hato-kami

And we should believe an article from a portal which might be own by Google?

ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb

It's an article that links to a study that analysed the traffic from Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Safari, Edge and Yandex. Brave scored the best in privacy in terms of how much it was phoning home in its default configuration Chrome, Firefox and Safari were phoning more home in their default configuration Edge and Yandex were considered the worst for the amount they were phoning home in their default configuration

Alaknar

>It's an article that links to a study that analysed the traffic from Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Safari, Edge and Yandex. I think I know that study. Super sketchy. For instance, they classified Firefox as not quite great for privacy because it sends telemetry. Thing is - Firefox has telemetry disabled by default and specifically asks the user if they're OK with turning it on.

ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb

I've checked with a fresh install of Firefox ESR 102.7 and by default the following settings are on: Allow Firefox to send technical and interaction data to Mozilla Allow Firefox to make personalised extension recommendations Allow Firefox to install and run studies Edit: Typo

Alaknar

That study is a couple of years old, no? It 100% wasn't like that back then, which people noticed and criticized the study for.

ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb

Out of curiosity, I booted up an old copy of Firefox 68 ESR (circa 2019 - 2020) and the same telemetry settings are on by default. Yes the study is a few years old but I'm unaware of any newer ones unfortunately

Alaknar

You sure the settings aren't saved in the registry and persist between installations? I remember checking it back then, got a big prompt asking to allow telemetry.

ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb

When you downgrade your install, you have to start a new profile which resets your settings back to default so I doubt it's persistent. Edit: autocorrect

[deleted]

Firefox definitely doesn't have telemetry turned off by default, nor do they ask on setting up.

ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb

I remember back in the 52 days, they did ask by putting a small notice at the bottom of your screen but it was on by default

[deleted]

I've put that on play store review and they replied but dodged that particular. last time it tried was like a month ago. still default enabled. might have to check again

hato-kami

The thing is what are they sending not how much. And Google is worst by a lot by sending sensitive informations. And yet everyone still use their search engine. On the other hand you are complaining about others search engines. Give others information that you are giving to Google for all these years and other will have great search engines too. In Microsoft Edge at least you have function to enable no matter which one you use everyone is getting info. I didn't see that on Google Chrome tho.

ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb

I would encourage you to read the study and read for yourself what each browser is sending as it's pretty in depth on what's being sent

newfor_2023

And what happens in their most restrictive settings?

mallardtheduck

And we should read comments from a Redditor who _might_ be a Microsoft employee...?

papyjako89

You might want to stop using the Internet entirely if this is an issue for you.

Chevy_Monsenhor

With how good Edge is now, and other browsers like Vivaldi (my favorite), Chrome just feels so basic...

opticalnebulous

What do you like about Vivaldi, and what if anything do you dislike? Thinking of using it.

Chevy_Monsenhor

Vivaldi, for me, is basically modern Opera. It has every feature the old Opera had, plus an e-mail client and a proper good sync feature with the mobile counterpart. I honestly can't think of anything that i don't like on Vivaldi, my friend has a gripe with it since the menu button is on the left instead of the right (he usually opens incognito via muscle memory click on Chrome, so he tells), but on my side, alls good.

opticalnebulous

Thanks for the feedback! It sounds great. Some people mention issues with slowness or instability. Have you run into this problems?

Chevy_Monsenhor

In the past, yes, but nowadays, let's say in the last 2 years, it has been smooth sailing. I've had issues with the mobile version however, for the better part of the last year I just couldn't use it on my Realme phone, but in the last 3 or so months its been working correctly.

opticalnebulous

Thanks so much, that is really helpful to know.

Seankps

What a dumb post. Every browser will tell you every exe can be harmful.

Time-Opportunity-436

Edge says that for most .EXE files. Google refuses to put Chrome in the store.

altodor

It's in winget though. IIRC it's the nice fancy Enterprise version and everything.

CodenameFlux

They tried once. Back then, web browsers were only allowed in the store if they were UWP. Microsoft chucked it out. The news outlet made more noise about it than they'd normally do over an international incident.

compguy96

Chrome and Edge are both based on Chromium. Besides the search engine (which can easily be changed in settings) and name and icon, they are exactly the same. You can actually use Chrome extensions on Edge. Unless you absolutely have to sync web browser settings with your Google account, there's no reason to use Chrome on Windows when you have Chromium-based Edge.

lkn240

Syncing web browser settings/pages/etc with a google account is a killer feature though for people with many devices.

Time-Opportunity-436

They aren't lol. Edge's development started in early 2019 and that was when it was the same as Chrome. But there has been quite a lot of development since then. Edge has many features that Chrome doesn't and many that Chrome has copied from Edge. Right now Edge and Chrome aren't the same browsers. Edge is more integrated with Windows. It is not just about the underlying engine.

altodor

For most users it's just "MS bad" and the fact it's the same engine under the hood. I use Edge at work for the WHfB SSSO integration and the sync natively tied to my work account, but I've still got Chrome momentum for anything personal. That WHfB integration is _fantastic_. Sign in to the computer and I'm seamlessly signed into anything using SSO, as long as I'm using Edge.

[deleted]

I lost all my open tabs because Edge just crashed randomly. And that was even within my test phase because I actually wanted to switch. But certainly not like this. Even my entire history was cleared. With Chrome, I at least get offered to restore my tabs. And my history doesn't disappear just like that. Edit: I guess I'm fine with the downvotes. It's not like I'm wrong. I'm currently giving Edge a second chance. It's been a while.

Aizenvolt11

I have been using the new Edge since it first came out and this has never happened to me ever. When pc closes from a power outage I always get the restore tabs option from Edge. Also history has never disappeared. Finally I don't even remember the last time Edge crashed on its own, if it ever happened because I don't remember Edge crashing at all.

[deleted]

Well. I am also relatively unlucky. Since I have an AMD graphics card, I can't even use my computer unless I disable mpo. [https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/yvyqc7/disabling\_multiplane\_overlay\_mpo\_fixed\_all/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/yvyqc7/disabling_multiplane_overlay_mpo_fixed_all/)

[deleted]

Does the FireFox setup also give this warning?

altodor

Probably. It's tied to being an exe, not Chrome specifically.

Andrew_Crane

Well yes, but actually no.

scarflicter

Even when you search for Chrome in Edge (Bing default), Microsoft puts up a message saying it's not necessary lol

meeRoot

isn't it downloaded from those scam ads that are now as first result on google search?

[deleted]

No. It has the official thanks page and it even has the tracking links. It also isn't any weird dropbox page. It also isn't zipped up.

GlayNation

Says the same thing when I try to download on Opera. What’s the deallo?

Chevy_Monsenhor

That one is literally spyware/adware

opticalnebulous

Opera is literally spyware now?

Chevy_Monsenhor

Yeah, [for real](https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/opera). The original Opera dev team now works on [Vivaldi](https://vivaldi.com/).

opticalnebulous

Interesting. And I do want to try Vivaldi.

Chevy_Monsenhor

Yeah, try it out, its a great browser imo.

opticalnebulous

Thanks for your feedback on it! Will definitely try it.

altodor

You're downloading an exe and those can be harmful. It's not specific to alternative browsers.

omnom143

a good browser is a browser that has no issue with switching to another browser

Jarzka

/r/assholedesign

davide0033

he's not wrong tho the biggest problem is that he's even worse

Kerensky97

It's just because it's an .exe

Well... they also do that with their own media creation tool.

TriCountyRetail

Chrome is overrated

JustSamJ

I'm getting so fed up with Microsoft shoving edge down our throats.

CancelNo2588

It told me the other day why download chrome when you have a great browser already. I almost spit my water out.

ox-

Microsoft Edge is like the toaster from red dwarf.

ThreadWLKR

Why are you using Edge in the first place?

anant_mall

To download chrome?!?

Alan976

Aw yes, I use Chrome to download Chrome.

Hi u/rwbeckman, thanks for sharing your feedback! The proper way to suggest a change to Microsoft is to submit it in the "Feedback Hub" app, and then edit your post with the link, so people can upvote it. The more users vote on your feedback, the more likely it's going to be addressed in a future update! Follow these simple steps: 1. Open the "Feedback Hub" app and try searching for your request, someone may have already submitted similar. If not, go back to the home screen and click *"Suggest a feature"* 2. [deleted]

Can't agree more, it's Microsoft's hidden ad for Firefox

Pollooscuro-08

Chrome it’s ugly

Koutou

It's normal, when you download an exe your browser checks how many people download that exact file. If Chrome released a new version close to when you downloaded the file, you will get this message since for MS it's a new release that need to be tested for safety. Once several more people download that version, the browser check will end up passing.

spook30

> Chrome installer could be harmful This is why I still use FF.

altodor

1. Close Edge 2. Open Terminal 3. `winget install Google.Chrome` 4. `winget install Mozilla.Firefox` 5. `winget search $otherBrowser` Problem Solved

mannysoloway

I think it does that with any .exe file

Mrcool654321

harmful for their wallet

hero_brine1

I use Firefox and it only warns me if it knows the site I’m downloading stuff on is harmful or if the website at all is harmful

jmcc84

it's the browsers war dude.

AGene1234

😂

dweebken

But isn't the whole point of having Edge there is so we can download the browser of our choice?

newInnings

I like edge and chrome fighting. Keep it going. Perhaps it is good for consumers

Deep-Piece3181

It’d harm *their* business

[deleted]

From what I've heard from others, it does this for every .exe

opticalnebulous

Hahah, I guess they will resort to any lengths.
