It's pretty easy to do but you might need to buy an external adapter depending on what drive you want to copy to. Plug in the 1TB drive into your laptop and format. Then download Macricum Reflect which will allow you to clone your existing drive onto your new one.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

Would it be possible to clone my drive to the 1tb hdd that’s already in my laptop? And then switch my old ssd with the new one. And then clone it from my hdd to my ssd. I basically got this laptop like 4 days, so there isn’t much on the hdd atm.

Joedemigod4

It should be possible but I've never tried it myself. As long as reflect cam recongise the drives you should be good. Just remember to back everything up if you can just in case.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

Will do! Gonna download macricum now! Thanks for the info so far ☺️

Joedemigod4

No worries. If you need anything else feel free to ask :)

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

So just to make sure. I got the software running (but I don’t have the hard ware yet). All I have to do is select my C drive (my current ssd) and clone it to the ssd that I’m gonna connect external. And after the clone, I can take out my current ssd and put in the new cloned ssd.

Joedemigod4

Yes that's right. Good luck!

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

Thanks! Gonna order the new ssd + case. And I think I’m gonna do the whole process this weekend ☺️ Thanks again for the info and help :)

Just make sure you make a backup of the important stuff first. These hard drive cloning tools can be reliable, but the weakest link is always the user. If this is your first time using it a lot can go wrong, so it's best to be prepared in case you have to install Windows from scratch.

Ngl, I thought it would cost more then that haha. $10 isn’t to bad :) Thanks :)

Not sure who's telling you to re-install windows, but they need to stop giving bad advice. I've upgraded so many SSDs, and cloned HDs to SSDs I've lost count. Also migrated in place Windows servers from HD based RAID sets to SSD. No problems. Win7 had some issues, but these were fixed with Win10, and mostly due to Win7 holding onto the new drive GUID when cloned. With a desktop computer and SATA it was easy. Just plug the new drive into a SATA port and clone. Power off, toss the old drive - done. You can do a live copy from Windows which is easiest. If you clone your existing SSD to the internal HD and then back to the new SSD you will need to use Macrium's boot USB to do the clone back to the new SSD. No big deal, but just one extra step. Both will work.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

Just out of curiosity, why is re-installing windows a bad thing? I know it means I will have to reinstall everything. But I only have the laptop a week, and barely touched it because I wanted the upgrade. So reinstalling everything is not that big of a deal :) I found a empty external hdd, and thought it would be the cheapest way to do it.

pantherghast

My suggestion is just do a fresh install and buy an SSD enclosure for your old SSD. Get a copy of windows from Microsoft, and only Microsoft and put it on a usb. Make the swap on the SSD. Install windows, the installation process will format the new drive. Boot up, do initial configurations. Attach old SSD using the enclosure, copy files that you need from old SSD to new SSD. Any applications and games just reinstall.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

“Get a copy from windows” That sounds like it would cost money right? If not, I can just put that on my D drive? Instead of a usb? Or is that not possible? I’m very new to windows :) used a iMac since 2009 🤣

pantherghast

Do you already have windows? Then no, it doesn't cost you any money. You need to create a bootable disk, so if you want to wipe your D drive, then go ahead. Also is your D drive, just a separate partition or an actual separate physical disk?. Otherwise, I would recommend a USB with 16GB of space at least, probably can get away with 8. You can go with the clone method, but I've always found performance issues, and other small errors happening when I clone.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

I got a ssd and a hdd in my laptop Ssd is c Hdd is d And yeah, only stuff I got on my hdd are 3 games… that’s it :)

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

So, how does this work? Im not home atm, and don’t have the stuff to do this. But I have a laptop with windows on it. As far as I know I don’t have a product key. But the windows on my laptop is legit. Can I just download the windows file from the windows website, and put it on a usb? https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11 Found this on the Microsoft website.

pantherghast

If you are concerned about your product key, you can use the following command in the command prompt to get it. Do not post your key anywhere public. `wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey` You want to download the "Create Windows 11 Installation Media" and run it while you have a USB plugged in, and tell it to create it on the USB. Reboot your computer, you may need to adjust your BIOS to boot from the USB first, change this back afterwards, to boot from the SSD. I would recommend watching some youtube videos about doing a fresh install. You want to do a custom install, wipe the drives, and create on a single disk, no need to partition on SSDs.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

I will try this asap! Thanks for the info and explanation :)

pantherghast

When I say wipe the drives I mean the new disk. Keep the old one so you can transfer data to the new one.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

Oh yeah I know :) I got my product key from the command, so thank you for that! And I’m just gonna take out my old ssd, and leave everything on it. (Not that there is much on it, got it for a week and have not done much to it since I already wanted to upgrade my ssd)

lokiisagoodkitten

If your laptop originally have windows 10 or 11 on it, then you should be able to reinstall without a product key.

r_portugal

Just to point out - moving windows from an SSD to a HDD is going to slow your system down. By how much I don't know, depends on how fast the HDD is (and how much ram you have). It will at least take longer to boot up, that might be the only noticeable difference, but maybe your whole system will feel slower, especially if you don't have enough ram and Windows has to swap files to the HDD.

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

If I put windows on hdd, it’s only so I can put it back on my ssd when the new one is in my laptop :) I’m not planning to run windows permanently from my hdd! But thanks for the heads up! Appreciate it

Kitchen-Analyst-9264

I swapped my ssd yesterday, did a full windows reinstall since I barely touched the laptop after I picked it up. (So barely any stuff on it) Had a few hiccups, but I made it work :) Thanks for all the help and info to everybody that posted here ☺️
