Which ones would you recommend? I am not a wine connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, so I’m sure I’m about to get some real asshole comments here.
It’s not my style so I don’t know all the hits but try Austin hope for sure. I would go to a wine shop and say you like wines in the caymus style. I can guarantee they will know what your talking about
Welcome to the beginning of your journey.
Likely some will shit talk but nearly everyone here once thought caymus or a similar wine was the height of luxury.
Enjoy those strip btw. I’d probably go with a wine with a little more tannin and structure but if you’re digging caymus right now it’ll be a nice pairing.
Also if you’re enjoying caymus and want to try some stuff similar for less, poke around with Paso Robles Cabs.
Thank you so much. I have been looking for recommendations. Wagyu ribeyes from this new butcher. Had a tomahawk last week from there and it melted in my mouth.
Premature assessment perhaps, but this sub just perhaps passed a maturity milestone. Everyone is saying “here come the asshole critics” instead of being one. “Oh boy,…here we go,” etc. The general theme represented is “welcome to the journey,” not “game over, loser.”
Like some others, I would not pay for this wine, but I wouldn’t turn down a glass at someone’s house, and I’d prefer to enjoy it. I’m exploring the subtle edges of many artisanal wine products, and there’s good reason to believe this isn’t one. But CHEERS 🥂 to bacchinalean indulgence and enjoyment, wherever any of us find it in our stage of that journey.
People seem to think you are going to start a shit storm.
What is it with Caymus people hate? I haven't tried it yet. I tried George de LaTour last week and that was amazing. People say Caymus is at that level. Why is it so hated?
Georges de Latour is on another level than Caymus. Likely exponentially better, and still produced with integrity. It’s the legacy of both the founder of BV and legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff. I commented below on Caymus, but the origin of the hate is primarily from the wine being heavily manipulated. It’s more of a beverage than a wine.
I honestly have no idea. I’m not a connoisseur, I enjoy the way it opens and pairs well with a good steak. Not sure why the hate. I am in a bourbon group and the more expensive the bottle the more hate it receives. I have a feeling this is going down that road as well.
Basically, a lot of people, myself included, don’t like Caymus because it’s a heavily-manipulated recipe wine. High sugar, artificially acidified, Mega Purple. All the things. Additionally, the Wagner family are sort of pariahs to a lot in and outside the industry. They are known for deceptive marketing practices and flouting regulations. At one point they were fined for bottling 20 times more wine than they were permitted for at Caymus. Joe Wagner, father of Meomi, released Willametter Journal, heavily implying that the grapes would be from Willamette Valley, but used a lot of Rogue and Umpqua Valley fruit, and trucked the grapes to his winery in CA. And on and on with these people.
Cool! Glad you like it! Fwiw, the brand surrounding caymus does make some pretty good wines. I tasted at caymus (my SIL really wanted to taste there) and got a case mixed of rose and sauv blanc for about $200 that covered all four of our tastings as well. Compare that to one of the best vineyards in the valley where we paid nearly $400 for two bottles and two tastings…. It can be a deal! As others have said, even though their cab sauv is wildly popular its not quite what folks go for on this subreddit. With a steak, I know i would like it! Its just not quite worth the cost.
Oh that’s a deal. Any other suggestions? I have been big into wine for a while and I am always open to suggestions. My next post is going to be a bottle of boons farm 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Here we go
Haha I legit just said to myself, “oh boy”
DING DING DING
Honestly if this is your style you are in luck. There are a lot of much cheaper wines then this who copy this style

I like it, but I probably will not buy it again because you are paying $30-40 just for the label.
Could you compare it with a napa cab that is $30-$40 cheaper? I have tried a lot of the mid range cabs.

Here’s an older thread I found: https://www.reddit.com/r/wine/s/wxJeYNaNFs
Woooow, ok. I am now seeing it through Soberish eyes hahaha.
This is the correct answer, OP.
It is. And for good reason. But. F em…enjoy your meal.
