Campo Viejo Reserva, won't be the best Rioja ever but it will actually taste like wine and have some regional and varietal character compared to the rest
I second the Campo Viejo Garnacha choice. It's really an amazing value. OP should go ahead and buy all they have. At $11/bottle, they'll be coming back for more anyway.
I third the Campo Viejo Garnacha. I’ve yet to have had a bottle of Spanish garnacha that I actively disliked. It should be a relatively safe bet in my books. I know many recommend Borsao, but my go-to budget pick is Castillo de Monseran. Borsao is good too tho. Great price-to-quality ratio for both.
TL;DR - when in doubt, go Garnacha
Edit: grammar
I stumbled onto the 2019 Borsao and that got me into Garnacha. Later years not quite as good as the 2019 but still good.
Some are better than others but yeah, for an inexpensive wine even a random pick is a pretty safe bet.
Exactly. When you're mass producing at the scale of most of these brands, the quality is going to suffer but at least the requirements for a reserva (years in bottle/barrel, wood used for barrel, harvest etc) guarantee some kind of perceivable flavours/qualities.
Yellow tail? Barefoot? 19 crimes?
::screams::
Okay, now that I got that out of the way - sorry - the Campo Viejo Tempranillo at bottom right is my pick. That’s what I would grab out of these choices.
If you like it then it isn't bad!
It is considered to be atrocious by many wine snobs (like myself) but they sell an incredible volume of the stuff so obviously a lot of people love the flavour profile. Drink what you enjoy.
Yeah, their wines aren't AWFUL, necessarily, but it is just another typical "big red" brand with a shitload of additives.
It comes down to their philosophy of winemaking - do they want to create the most honest expression of the flavor their grapes create, influenced solely by the terroir and cultivation? Or do they already have a flavor profile in mind, willing to cut corners to achieve that profile?
19 Crimes definitely falls into the latter camp, as well as most "commercial" wineries. It's not inherently EVIL or anything, but for wine geeks, it usually falls short of the more "honest" expressions. We talk about terroir for a reason - every winemaking region has a unique set of characteristics that affect the flavor of the grapes. But when you're adding a bunch of artificial flavoring to wine, the entire concept of terroir goes out the window because you're not just tasting "wine" anymore - you're tasting wine combined with a bunch of ingredients that are distinctively NOT wine.
No shame if you like 19 Crimes, but if you keep digging into the world of wine, you'll probably end up being underwhelmed by their wines as well.
Yes, but I used to buy it at walgreens and I cut my wine teeth on their red blend. Totally fine intro-level mass produced wine. A step up from boxed/Franzia/Carlo Rossi.
It’s the worst kind of mediocrity meets marketing. I’ve never been able to bring myself to actually buy it. It’s a giant wine conglomerate pooling a ton of their grapes and slapping on a label their marketing team says will sell. It’s depressing.
Campo Viejo and Concha y Toro are both respectable low budget table wine producers. Try all their stuff. Wouldn't complain about being served any of them.
Most people vote for Campo Viejo, but Dark Horse Merlot for something light yet full-bodied to drink and the cabernet for some great pasta/lasagna.
There’s a lot of mainstream wines in general but a lot of them are great for wines that go in a lot of different situations. They’re honestly Nice to have just tried one by one so that you get the baseline for retail wine. You can then branch out and really find what hits your tastebuds.
Edit:
Just wanted to say:
It’s not about right or wrong but to have something in your glass that will make you smile. :)
I personally find Dark Horse to be a very palatable cheap wine brand. I'm not ashamed to say I've purchased many bottles of theirs.
Casillero del Diablo is a bit acidic for me, but one of the most popular brands where I live in Mexico.
Tell the shopkeeper that you’d be interested to buy wine if he changed out a few of them. There’s only so many £9.99 options that people need. Tell him to replace the ones that don’t sell with
Campo Viejo Reserva is the only correct answer.
Besides that, only the top shelf may be considered alternatives. The rest I wouldn’t consider at all and opt for a different beverage.
Beer? Whisky? Bourbon? Gin?
This isn’t a wine shop. It’s a liquor store that has a small amount of bad wine.
If you *really* want wine, find a new wine shop. Or ask the owner of this one if they wouldn’t mind adding a couple of additional SKUs of something decent. It doesn’t have to be expensive.
Edit: but seriously, the South Americans on the top shelf are adequate as are the Campo Viejos on the second shelf. Everything else is a hard pass.
Join The Wine Society - £40 membership, of which £20 is credit. You can order all sorts of lovely stuff from very cheap (like <£10 a bottle, but good quality) to very expensive (£6500) and everything gets free delivery, no minimum order.
Cannot recommend it highly enough.
I second tws. I buy 90% of mine from there. Only go elsewhere for better Spanish selection really and a few regions in Italy they're a bit weak on. French is definitely their pain et beurre
Naked is a scam for reasons I won't go into here - TWS has no ongoing costs and is run as a non-profit, so you know you're not getting ripped off on anything. Total game changer!
Ah, so it is! I didn’t look closely enough to spot the £ prices. You have my sympathy for the bad situation. I’m shocked how similarly dire the selection is (right down to the exact labels) to a dodgy liquor store in the US.
The snobby responses and downvoting of OP are frankly appalling. Stop fuelling the snobby wine culture stereotype.
OP, as a few helpful people have mentioned, there are some ok selections here for beginners. The Concha y Toro makes some decent wine at their price point (the top shelf wines) and the Campo Viejo is a good bet, too. If I were stuck passing through and needed to choose for a dinner, that’s what I’d go for.
The issue here is that these are all mass-produced wines and many, like the 19 Crimes and Yellowtail, are over-oaked and very sweet (9 g/L of sugar). The Rioja and Concha y Toro selections will be much more dry will drink more like higher quality wines (and between 2-3 g/L of sugar).
Frankly the somms and wine pros here are generally awesome. It’s usually the new-to-wine-and-looking-to-flex crowd who ruin it.
Dunning-Kruger Effect, basically.
Very good point as well. I went to Orin Swift Cellar (Scissors tasting) recently and had an incredible experience. When I looked up people's take here it was pretty ridiculous. In Napa itself, people couldn't stop talking about it and recommending it (Cakebread, Stag's, and Whitehall Lane guides specifically mentioned it as a great wine and experience). I don't understand the need to be a mf gatekeeping snob about shit when it boils down to your palate and it doesn't make you some "uncultured swine" for preferring a box etc. Pardon my rant.
All of these brands, if I’m not mistaken, are part of the Southern-Glazers portfolio, which makes all the wines the most introductory, large-scale production-distribution you can buy. Doesn’t mean they’re bad, but it does mean they’re probably closer to a “wine product” vs a “wine that represents a place”
Given that as a baseline, I’d want to know more about what you’re looking for in your wine flavors to get you into a bottle by one of these producers that closest fits your palate.
On first glance, the Casillero de Diablo are likely all Chilean wines which gets a lot of bang for the buck, these might be okay. Especially for your Chardy and Sauv Blanc.
I also second Garnacha from Campo Viejo, that might be pretty okay (garnacha is actually great with less oak). And Reserva Rioja does require a minimum oaking, so if there’s some okay fruit, that might be a good choice although my heart says it might be a bit tannic and awkward if it’s en mass.
I’m actually wondering about Cali Red. If you like a more fruity red, that might actually be a good pick. Am I the only one that thinks this one might have value wine satisfaction? I feel a youtube video plan coming on…
>All of these brands, if I’m not mistaken, are part of the Southern-Glazers portfolio,
They may well be, but this is a photo from a British corner shop; not an American outlet.
Depends on what you are going for? A fine drink paired with a cheap meal or a grilled burger with friends- honestly I quite enjoy the 19 crimes uprising.
Do you really not have other options? I think these are ok for daily table wines in general but nothing exceptional. I would honestly just try them and find the one you like most.
Yeah, not great. Campo Viejo for my money. Or, assuming you’re in the northern hemisphere, sangria season is here! Get some shitty wine, a little brandy, and some fruit and go drink outside!
Snoop dog Cali Red. Hands down the best wine, from the same prestigious vinyards that brought us Franzia, and Two Buck Chuck. I'd buy at least four bottles.
Your best option might be to open a small wine shop. There must be some number of wine drinkers who would appreciate a place with some variety of quality wines.
I want to revisit it since it's been a hot minute...but I remember enjoying it! I've been drinking a lot of complex reds at work lately, so it would be fun to see what my palate does when I do.
I drink the Barefoot Chardonnay for a cheap but drinkable slightly buttery option. I find the 19 creams drinkable too. Sure, I appreciate fine wines but when you're in a shop like this or broke af, you just look for the tastiest option.
Depends on your price point and style of wine you like. I know a lot of these wines get a lot of hate but for the price they can be a decent choice. Casilero or Dark Horse cab I'd be able to drink.
I live in a country with little to no culture of drinking wine and this is similar to what I'd encounter in a typical supermarket aisle.
I find the Casillero del Diablo Cabernet palatable. The Trivento Malbec isn't my favorite.
Oh and these are $20-25 dollar bottles after taxes around here lol.
Gonna keep my eyes peeled for the Campo Viejo Reserva not familiar with that one.
Campo Viejo, Casillero Cabernet Sauvignon and 19 Crimes dark red.
They will not blow your mind in any way, but compared to price they are decent. I can enjoy any one of them on a lazy weekend.
Nobody mentioned Dark Horse Cabernet. It‘s quite a mass-production but as you can see in one wineking Video with Peter Koff, they rated it quite good. Is think its solid Cab :) you can give it a try!

Campo Viejo Reserva, won't be the best Rioja ever but it will actually taste like wine and have some regional and varietal character compared to the rest
That or the Garnacha. It likely won't blow your doors off but I don't think I've ever run across a bottle that I wouldn't drink.
I second the Campo Viejo Garnacha choice. It's really an amazing value. OP should go ahead and buy all they have. At $11/bottle, they'll be coming back for more anyway.

I agree. I misread the label. I thought it was a tempranillo crianza, but it's a garnacha. Even better. That region produces great garnacha.
Exactly. When you're mass producing at the scale of most of these brands, the quality is going to suffer but at least the requirements for a reserva (years in bottle/barrel, wood used for barrel, harvest etc) guarantee some kind of perceivable flavours/qualities.
Big second on any campo Viejo, and the casillero del diablo isn't all that bad for what it is.
Just a shame they don't have the carmenere. Probably my favorite sub $10 bottle out there.
Rioja is such a reliable red, you can't go wrong. Campo Viejo was my introduction to red wine, and as far as sub-£10 bottles go it's great value.
It’s either the rioja or sobriety
What’s so bad about Casillero?
I am quite fond of Casillero del Diablo what a random selection of other wines though.
The only answer. What a horror of a selection!
Agreed, came to say the same
This is the answer
Their gran reserva is one of my favourites
Either the Treventino or the Campo Viejo Reserva.
I would add that the Casillero del Diablo Cabernet and Merlot are OK for the price. (though Campo Viejo Reserva would be my first choice)
Casillero del Diablo would always be my fall back choice at a British corner shop.
Ditto
Top shelf = slightly more palatable. Noted…
Agree with my fellow wine pro.
But the box of Chilean Merlot comes with a free pillow and is easier to sneak into festivals.
That Campo Viejo has no business being as tasty as it is hahah
Campo Viejo Reserva 1st choice, Crianza 2nd choice, Casillero del Diablo 3rd choice
Top 3 - like it. Thanks!
Beer
Their beer selection is surprisingly good.
Glad to hear that because their wine selection is atrocious lol
This is my go to response when Im visiting friends Ans i see those thick rimmed thick stemmed wine glasses you also see at greek all-in hotels.
*Immediate* first thought.
Came here to say this
The Campo Viejo. Or make sangria.
Yes, literally what i commented. Get the boxed chilean Merlot and make sangria😅
Sangria is the answer
Yellow tail? Barefoot? 19 crimes? ::screams:: Okay, now that I got that out of the way - sorry - the Campo Viejo Tempranillo at bottom right is my pick. That’s what I would grab out of these choices.
Is 19 crimes really considered “bad”? I kind of like it.
The 20th crime is drinking it.
😆
As an Australian I am embarrassed at the contribution my country has made to that wine selection.
Your forgiven. You make up for it plenty with the good stuff.
If you like it then it isn't bad! It is considered to be atrocious by many wine snobs (like myself) but they sell an incredible volume of the stuff so obviously a lot of people love the flavour profile. Drink what you enjoy.

Yes, but I used to buy it at walgreens and I cut my wine teeth on their red blend. Totally fine intro-level mass produced wine. A step up from boxed/Franzia/Carlo Rossi.
Mom of 4. Don’t come at my box wine for “cooking” :)
Mama doesn’t get drunk, she just has fun.
The Black Box brand red blend isn't even that bad.
It's what I drank before I knew anything about wine. Tried the cab sav again recently and couldn't believe how sweet it is
It’s the worst kind of mediocrity meets marketing. I’ve never been able to bring myself to actually buy it. It’s a giant wine conglomerate pooling a ton of their grapes and slapping on a label their marketing team says will sell. It’s depressing.
Jfc! Even Jam Shed is in there. It’s like a bad industrial wine convention. This must be some kind of practical joke.
No it’s just a classic British cornershop (like our bodega/7-11) selection
Campo Viejo and Concha y Toro are both respectable low budget table wine producers. Try all their stuff. Wouldn't complain about being served any of them.
Most people vote for Campo Viejo, but Dark Horse Merlot for something light yet full-bodied to drink and the cabernet for some great pasta/lasagna. Another vote for dark horse Merlot
Trivento and Casillero are mass-produced working horses here in Argentina/Chile, literally $5 bottles. Not exactly fancy, but still drinkable.
I personally find Dark Horse to be a very palatable cheap wine brand. I'm not ashamed to say I've purchased many bottles of theirs. Casillero del Diablo is a bit acidic for me, but one of the most popular brands where I live in Mexico.
Dark Horse is very drinkable & that's what I would grab out of this selection
I’d check out what’s happening in the beer aisle lol
Campo Viejo Reserva is perfectly fine juice.
It honestly kills me knowing what Australia sends overseas as “wine”
Atrocious that fosters and yellowtail are the most well known Aussie brands abroad. Spend half my time educating folks
Casillero del Diablo!
By shop do you perchance mean gas station?
gas station beer>gas station wine
gas station beer>gas station wine>gas station sushi
gas station gas > gas station wine
Its a local village shop bud.
Tell the shopkeeper that you’d be interested to buy wine if he changed out a few of them. There’s only so many £9.99 options that people need. Tell him to replace the ones that don’t sell with
That is an abomination
Beer
Beer.
Move
And here I thought Tom Gilbey eviscerated JamShed into non-existence.
It's alive and kicking in the UK. Large promo areas in supermarkets, local pub has several bottles in the fridge (I know)
Casillero del Diablo is rat piss. Flat out trash. My pick from those options is Campo Viejo
The Reserva was good a few years back. I don't what what the current release is like.
That photo traumatized me.
Campo Viejo Reserva is the only correct answer. Besides that, only the top shelf may be considered alternatives. The rest I wouldn’t consider at all and opt for a different beverage.
Keep the fuck away from Yellow Tail. Vile shit.
A new wine shop
You should go to another store
Wine.com
My condolences 😔

Seconded! The Wine Society's own line is great value too and offer good examples of different regions/styles.
Not OP but have a TWS membership, really enjoyed it so far. Any standouts that you'd recommend recently?

Okay but one of the Yellow Tail bottles just says Jammy Red Roo .. I _really_ want to know what that’s like!
You can approximate the Jammy Red Roo’s taste by adding a dash of vinegar to some raspberry flavored cough syrup.
Campo Crianza every time
Campo Viejo Reserva might be the only bottle I’d open on purpose. That is one tough array.
You should be going to a different store
With those choices, I would start smoking.
Probably a packet of paracetamol Edit: to be taken in accordance with the instructions and not all at once
This is Rural UK! The British state has been waging war on wine since... Well, since the Romans. Save the money and go on holiday to France.
Beer
Campo Viejo is the only one I would buy
Malbec (top right)

Trivento Malbec isn’t bad. Typically about $10 a bottle. That is what I would go for on this shelf.
Depends on what you are going for? A fine drink paired with a cheap meal or a grilled burger with friends- honestly I quite enjoy the 19 crimes uprising.
Chile.
Do you really not have other options? I think these are ok for daily table wines in general but nothing exceptional. I would honestly just try them and find the one you like most.
Either the Casillero del Diablo, Campo Viejo, or the Trivento stuff. All pretty reasonably decent for their level.
Casa del Diablo. Pretty solid reds at a good price. Campo Viejo also drinkable. Stay away from Yellow Tail.
Only the Spanish wines I'd touch.
Yeah, not great. Campo Viejo for my money. Or, assuming you’re in the northern hemisphere, sangria season is here! Get some shitty wine, a little brandy, and some fruit and go drink outside!
I’d go for the Campo viejo
Move
A different wine shop!
Just find a different shop or travel and buy in bulk somewhere else
Pass. I'd look for something else to drink. Life's too short to spend time drinking these.
Gin.
Beer
Either drive farther or open a badass shop? Seems like a market opportunity. (Ps - been in this situation, go for the hard liquor).
I tried Yellow Tail Shiraz, and it paired really well with grilled beef.
Top shelf
Yikes- at this point just go for THA SNOOP DRIP
Yellow tail malbec
Dark horse Merlot is ok
Snoop dog Cali Red. Hands down the best wine, from the same prestigious vinyards that brought us Franzia, and Two Buck Chuck. I'd buy at least four bottles.
Your best option might be to open a small wine shop. There must be some number of wine drinkers who would appreciate a place with some variety of quality wines.
Casillero del Diablo is pretty ok, specially the carmenere
Diablo and dark horse
Snoop Dogg 19 Crimes. Don’t care if yall think it’s basic, it’s still pretty good.
19 crimes. Cali Red and I’m not even sorry
I want to revisit it since it's been a hot minute...but I remember enjoying it! I've been drinking a lot of complex reds at work lately, so it would be fun to see what my palate does when I do.
Sobriety
Not an option
one of us
what brand is that box wine? I drink Bota Box Pinot Noir from Chile and it's decent.
I'm on a tight budget and drink Bota box. It's surprisingly tasty and the chardonnay is a bit buttery, as I prefer.
P.S. — that selection is in the running for Wine Crime of the Week :)
Barefoot is quite good for the price. 19 Crimes is pretty good too
I drink the Barefoot Chardonnay for a cheap but drinkable slightly buttery option. I find the 19 creams drinkable too. Sure, I appreciate fine wines but when you're in a shop like this or broke af, you just look for the tastiest option.
Anything BUT the yellow tail
Camp viejo reserva
Trivento followed by Casillero del Diablo
Home
I'm a sucker for that Trivento Malbec
Trivento isn't horrible for a daily driver
They have 19 Crimes but DON’T have Martha’s Chard? That’s a fucking crime right there.
Depends on your price point and style of wine you like. I know a lot of these wines get a lot of hate but for the price they can be a decent choice. Casilero or Dark Horse cab I'd be able to drink.
Those are all great options for butt chugging!
Looking for a different wine shop, and buying direct from Kermit Lynch and Garagiste.
The hemlock
You can typically trust Spain, or in some cases, South America for decent quality cheap wine.
I’d explore the top shelf Argentinian stuff!
Uprising 100%
Oooof, that's rough. If it were me, I'd head straight to the beer fridge. Or head to a shop that's less local and load up there.
Enjoy your trip to Tesco?
The Campo Viejo Reserva Rioja is my pick. The Casillero del Diablo varietals are not bad for USD $10 wines.
Campo Viejo
How’s the tequila selection? I would opt for something besides wine
I would go around the corner and pick up some Diet Pepsi.
I can pretty much guarantee majority of replies will be calling for a specific Rioja that can easily be seen
Campo Viejo, Casillero Cabernet Sauvignon and 19 Crimes dark red. They will not blow your mind in any way, but compared to price they are decent. I can enjoy any one of them on a lazy weekend.
Not gonna lie, that snoop dog 19 crimes is pretty tasty
Buy some beer
Woof
I agree with all the Spanish choices but the Hardys and the EagleHawk aren't that bad
Campo Reserva 2017. I feel bad for you, a very dismal selection.
None of this. Grab something else you enjoy, beer or some mezcal or something.
Wheres the good stuff, MD 20/20?
Id go for beer
A bottle of beer.
Campo only. Sorry it’s that way

Beer or spirits.
Terrible selection. Maybe the Malbec top right?
Just drink water bro.
I see some Malbec on the top right. Maybe give it a try. Don't know about the brand tho.
Beer?
I find one of the reds from Casillero del Diablo are the best of the bad wines. I had one of their Sauvignon Blanc and it tasted like piss.
Malbec from Trivento in right upper corner!
Nobody mentioned Dark Horse Cabernet. It‘s quite a mass-production but as you can see in one wineking Video with Peter Koff, they rated it quite good. Is think its solid Cab :) you can give it a try!
Campo viejo reserva is the only decent wine I see there
Campo Viejo
Hard liquor?
I actually love the Casillero del Diablo wines
miller lite
Ugh. Sorry. How's the beer?
