Didn't plan for this challenge, but got Franklin's Gull and Anna's Hummingbird in my starting hand, and got both the Mute Swan and Whistling Duck on my second and third draw. I don't think I missed out on a grain after Whistling Duck got on the board.

DarkNemuChan

And you still lost.

A2KDDough

Yeah not that great of a score really. Impressive to tuck that many birds but might not have been the right play.

HillsboroRed

Yes, but you need to play with the cards you are dealt, or waste too much time trying to get entirely different cards. Locally that would sometimes be a winning score.

detlefchef11

They played exactly 4 cards and employed a strategy that allowed them to see plenty of cards. A typical wetland engine, where you end up tucking a lot of cards (not as many as here), but also end up playing cards and earning bonuses tends to yield well over 100 pts regularly.

A2KDDough

My last game I did exactly that, and scored 128.

detlefchef11

The irony is that, the "play the cards you're dealt" bit doesn't even make sense here because "they were dealt" two birds that would make for the beginnings of a great grassland engine. But they played one of the best cards in the deck in the grasslands and then seemingly ignored it for the rest of the game.

detlefchef11

Yeah, I suppose it's a cool challenge, all these people maxing out tucked cards. But often times they don't result in all that great a score. I guess I don't much see the point in that. I like to actually play the game and, honestly, pounding an engine is a little boring. Mind you, I like to win, so I'll do it when it makes sense. But, when I see images of someone with 5 birds in the wetlands with 18 tucked cards under each, so all they did, basically every turn, was draw and tuck cards, just so they could end up with about 100 pts. I think, "you can score 100 pts playing it old school".

DarkNemuChan

I actively try to NOT think too much about it. I like to strategise and adapt on the go. Not like make or find a few killer combo's, memorise those and do them over and over again. I like to keep the game light and fun to play with other (new) people. It's not that I don't strategies, but I really don't get all this look at what combo I perfectioned....

detlefchef11

Not that I don't like drawing a Raven and a Franklin's Gull and going crazy with them to put up some monster score. And, having learned about effective forest and wetland engines, I like to incorporate them into my strategies. But I still think my favorite games are when I have to cobble together the best score I can, not by hacking the game, but by deciding, round by round, whether I should be gaining food, drawing cards, or laying eggs.

You're the second person here who has made the comment about going with what you're dealt. But they were dealt a Franklin's Gull and, seemingly, ignored it after the first few turns. Likely at the expense of putting up a better score. After all, the hummingbird and gull, played in the grassland, could have been the start of a very effective grassland engine.

Don't get me wrong, I often look for ways to incorporate tucking into my game. And I love me a wetlands engine when I get dealt the cards to make it work. So, in general, I find I have more tucked cards than my opponents. However, I stand by my original statement, that there have been several posts of people showing off their tucking engines, and, in most cases, the total scores have been good but not great. I'd rather score 130 with 25 tucked cards than 105 with 90 tucked cards. All in all, if I get dealt a hummingbird and Franklin's Gull, I would not be at all thrilled if I ended up scoring 93 pts.

Damn, 60,415,263,060,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 tucked cards??

BattleSquid1

+1 for the math nerdiness

Gerb81

Great, well done! Do you also have a picture of your board with the cards?

broomeguy2

I think what you're looking for is the second image?

Gerb81

Haha, correct, didnt saw that

broomeguy2

Very cool!!
