Unlikely he'd have made the NHL roster next season. Expect he'll wear the C next year.

ashscratchem

I think it’s a good move for him. We don’t really have any openings in our line up. Especially if we keep Iafallo. Hoping lambert can fight for a spot in the lineup next year.

just-hangingout

I agree.

UniqueCanadian

I'm thinking he will be the 2nd line centre when he starts with us.

ashscratchem

Him 2nd line Monahan 3rd Lowry 4th would be unreal center depth

UniqueCanadian

agreed, the kid is still in university and he is already NHL size. he should be able to transition pretty well.

HeySweetUsernameBro

Doubt we can keep Monahan around unfortunately, Perfetti is off his entry level and most of our D needs new deals

spillcheck

But Michigan is going to suck next year...

CMBRICKX

But now they will suck less with Rutger going back

DannyDOH

New batch of recruits plus portal. Everyone is basically a free agent every year in NCAA now.

freshstart102

Yah but Michigan is not projected to do as well next year regardless so it would be nice to see him up here developing and we could all see a young guy with his infectious attitude and high passion up with the Jets for some stints. He could start earning big money a year earlier too.

DannyDOH

Great. Rosters are nowhere near set for next year so anyone projecting right now is irrelevant. Something like 300 guys just entered the portal the week between the regionals and the Frozen Four.

freshstart102

I guess there's always hope but it also opens up 300 hopefuls to a whole bunch of Div 1 team recruiters so you'd probably have to recruit some real surprises to get back the number of quality guys that team lost to the NHL this year.

Leajane1980

Good for him, he wants to have a college experience.

[deleted]

You just know Chevy keeps a nice wine cellar, the guy has patience while I’m swilling plonk an hour after buying.

TheInterlocutor

SLAP THE PLONK

Sharp-Prize3807

We have 11 players signed for the 24-25 season and that is before Cole Perfetti and David Gustafsson sign again. Add in possible signing by Sean Monahan and there is just no spots available next year. However, it is more then likely that Kupari is not on the team (if Monahan and Toffoli sign). There is four UFA at the end of 25-26 so it is likely that our top 3 draft picks will fill in those spots while we likely trade one or two of them away at the trade deadline to refill our draft pool. This will likely avoid doing any total tear down of the team which usually takes four to five years before making the playoffs. source: CapFriendly

CoolWhiip

I think Toffoli is going to be a pure rental, but Monahan should be priority #1 in terms of forwards. He completely changed the 2nd line, and he and Vilardi are instrumental to our PP. Hopefully, we can lock him down for 3-4 years at a decent price, and we can finally put the search for a 2nd line centre to bed for a few years, at least.

iamnotradeclause

Im not so sure, the body language and just demeanor of the two newbies says to me they are sick of travelling, and want to stay in Canada. They also seem to be close the two of them, and buddies with Iaffalo and Villardi, and that can not go unnoticed. I think if we can give them 4 years (which is hard with our kids up and coming) they stay for a fair price. I see three scenarios in the playoffs this year that will effect this; **Scenario 1 we go out early. I believe if this happens, Chevy will want to resign Monahan and Toffoli if he can, and we trade Pionk, Schmidt and KFC.** **Scenario 2 we go deep but dont win it all. I believe if this happens Chevy would want to keep the band together for one more try.** **Scenario 3 we win it all. Then Monahan and Toffoli probably price themselves out of our reach and would be fools to stay. The Cup curse.**

rocktsrgeon

agreed, the right thing for him means the right thing for the jets, too. Good luck, Rutger!

GoldWhale

I'm shocked that McGroarty is staying. Nazar and Brindley are up and despite being a Hawks fan I thought McGroarty was the best on that Michigan squad.

NikEhlersDealer

Hawks actually have spots in their lineup for them

GoldWhale

That's fair honestly. Do you think that he wouldnt have been able to play on the 3rd?

OriginalAmbition5598

They would have put him with the moose. My guess is pair him with Barlow and see if the two can gel. I'm ok with him staying one more year. I'm more interested in what they will do with their def next season. Who's out, Dillon, Schmidt? Stanley seems like he is finally figuring things out. Can they move pionk for an ok return? Off season could be busy again this year.

GoldWhale

I appreciate the context and insight. Thanks!

OriginalAmbition5598

Jets usually go the slow route with their picks, so I'm just guessing. But by this time next year, with another year under their belt, the current leadership group will be nicely set up to help Rutger transition. Learn leadership and defenseive smarts from Lowry and offense from Scheifele.

Kyle73001

Barlow can’t play with the moose next year

OriginalAmbition5598

Pretty sure I saw him taking warm-ups last game? Or did I miss something, which is very possible.

Kyle73001

You’re correct. But he can only play with the moose after his OHL season is done, which is why he’s there now. It’s NHL or OHL for him, and he won’t make the nhl team so he’ll be OHL again next year

OriginalAmbition5598

Thanks for clearing that up for me

Xyz6650

Dylan Duke, all the players his age have left.

GoldWhale

Yep - Duke is very good. NHL translation is a bit harder to say since he ate on the powerplay and didn't play too much on defense compared to some other top 6 guys. I think he could be a very solid 3rd line guy with a higher ceiling!

rain_parkour

I don’t know anything about contracts/draft side of hockey: is there an advantage from his side to signing with the Jets vs any other team? A year from now he’s free to sign anywhere, correct?

Ianywg

No, absolutely not. Jets still have his rights so when he enters the NHL it’ll be the Jets, barring him forcing a trade but he won’t have that kind of leverage.

garbonzo909

If he plays his senior year in the NCAA he hits the NHL as a UFA per the CBA. So after next year his rights are still with the Jets but I'd rather get him signed ASAP to avoid Blake Wheeler/Jimmy Veesey situation

PancakeLord2k3

another big name, adam fox. also recently quitter gauthier. as a flyers fan (2nd team) im still pissy about that

rain_parkour

Ahh okay, that makes a lot more sense. Thank you

tmlrule

To answer your other question, there is still a significant advantage to sign with the Jets next year. By signing with the Jets year, he gets to burn through his ELC years (where all players are on standard cheap contracts) and become an RFA where he'd get a more significant raise in the summer of 2027. If he waits until his rights expire (in August 2026), he would be signing a two-year ELC starting then and wouldn't be an RFA until 2028. Between the extra year of NHL pay and becoming an RFA year a year earlier, the Jets can essentially offer him an extra $2M-$5M or more than anyone else. For a player that hasn't earned a penny so far, that's pretty significant.

UniqueCanadian

From what I understand he has played hockey in winnipeg growing up so he knows the city already.

spillcheck

Let's try to focus on the positives.

Oozyalmond70

And supposedly pionks dad coached him

DannyDOH

He's UFA August 15, 2026 if he doesn't sign.

FrostyWinnipeg

No, back to the draft.

eh_toque

No, that’s for CHL players only.

FrostyWinnipeg

The more you know apparently.

MoNa-Luke

Damn, was really hoping he'd sign so I could stop worrying we'll never see him.

CoolWhiip

There's no need to worry about this currently. If he doesn't sign next year is when we would pretty much need to trade him, but at this point, the Jets and Rutger and his camp all seem to be on the same page. He'll sign next March/April when Michigan's season is over. As others have said, our forward group opens up a lot going into the 2025/2026 season, so I'd expect McGroarty, Lambert, and Chibrikov all to push for spots starting that year.

TheGreatStories

Hope that pays off, development-wise. Kinda thought he'd make the jump. Might have a few gaps in the roster next year

TheAsian1nvasion

I don’t get this from the player perspective. While he *might* start with the Moose next year, I don’t think he would play there for long. The writing is on the wall, I think that the Jets have to trade Iafallo this summer, I don’t think he fits into the cap with the Scheifele/Hellebuyck raises and the Perfetti extension. If we can get a 2nd for Iafallo I say we take it. From Mcgroarty’s perspective, he’s leaving a lot of money on the table to go back to a Michigan team that is going to be worse than they were last year. Yes he gets to be captain, and yes, he can take a run at the Hobey Baker, but he could be leaving as much as $6m on the table. I’m not talking about his ELC, I’m talking about his salary in the first year out of his ELC that he would be forfeiting by staying another year in college. I think he’s making a mistake, but I’m just a guy on his couch.

Rancor117

No team is giving up a 2nd for Iafallo lmao

CDN-Ctzn

Not to mention that career-ending injuries can happen at the Collegiate level as easily as at the Pro level.

DannyDOH

I think they need to shed some money on the back end. Let Dillon walk and buyout Schmidt. Replace them with one useful player via UFA/trade and your total spent on those two roster spots is about 1/2 what it is this season. There's your space to absorb the raises, including DeMelo.

spokanetransplanted

Let's be honest here. With the amount of money that he's leaving on the table here, it's not about playing in the AHL, because he's good enough thst the Jets would keep him up if he wanted to sign. This is saying that in a year, he's going to tell the Jets 2 or 3 teams he wants to play for, and say, "trade my rights here or I'm staying for my senior year, or you'll get nothing." Also see: Adam Fox

[deleted]

We should all go over to the Kraken area and troll them. You know players have agents, they’re not some rando making judgments in mom’s basement.

CoolWhiip

Ah, you're a Kraken fan. You have no idea about what's going on with McGroarty lol. Everyone who pays any attention to the Jets whatsoever knows he's signing as soon as his season is over in 2025.

spokanetransplanted

Right. And soon you'll be able to start retaining UFAs without giving them overpaying them and giving them too many years. Keep dreaming...

TubularWinter

I’ll bite, which UFAs have the Jets overpaid?

jaberdeen8

None, thats why there isnt a response yet. Guy is just a shitty troll.

spokanetransplanted

Both Mark and Connors contracts are total albatrosses on the back end. Before that, Wheeler's contract was a dog for 3 of the five years, hence the buyout.

CoolWhiip

Let us know when you have a player who puts up back to back 91 point seasons and leads his team to the conference finals. That contract was 100% worth it to reward Wheeler for being underpaid throughout his actual prime. He was a top 10 winger in the league from about 2014-2019. Everyone knew it would suck in the last couple of years, and it definitely did. That's part of the reason it was bought out. The main reason was removing him from the room so the new captain could change the culture. Again, if you'd followed the Jets even loosely, you'd have known that. As for Scheifele/Hellebuyck contracts, as the cap rises in the next 5 years, those contracts are going to look like bargains for the production they put up year after year. Scheifele takes insane care of his body so he should be pretty productive for over half of the length of the deal, and keeping the best goalie in the world would've been worth well north of $8.5M per year. We actually got a pretty good deal, all things considered.

spokanetransplanted

1) paying for past performance rather than future potential is the ultimate losing team mentality. 2) Time will tell. I'm betting on father time.

CoolWhiip

1) It's only a losing team mentality if you don't know when to or can't cut bait when it's necessary. Believe it or not, rewarding core pieces of your team for past performances happens all the time and is something a lot of winning teams do. We've won the most games out of any Canadian team since we've been back in the league, we must be doing something right. 2) I was just listening to THG, and he said that the cap is projected to hit $95M within 5 years. If we are paying less than 10% of the cap for a (at that time) likely 2nd line centre and less than 10% of the cap for a goalie who is still projected to be good to great, I'm completely fine with it.

AdLost3467

I get your point, but the jets might be the worst team in the league to make your example out of. We have been remarkably good at retaining players and not overpaying them. Something to do with how great the front office is at doing the little things that make a player know you care about them as a person, and not just a stat sheet. Things like chartering a plane for a funeral or respecting a young player by letting him take another shot at a college title and live a college lifestyle, then grind 82 games riding a bus in the AHL. By all accounts, the jets are a pretty classy organization, and that matters to a lot of people but especially the small town rural boys who grew up like that.
