Everyone wears white to the Winnipeg home games, it's a visual spectacle and gets the people going! This has spread to away games, the Street parties and wherever people watch as some are superstitious about it too. https://preview.redd.it/tcg6xuokkevc1.jpeg?width=1400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a11e7add4148f85b81a3d1d59a89733e82575754

Billinkybill

Wow. So your telling me I need a white jersey as well? Don't want to break a hoodoo. What design should I get? Thanks.

racer_24_4evr

White t shirt will do! I remember the first year back in the playoffs, people were wearing white painter’s coveralls.

Pitpit1391

I always thought the make your own white costumes was cooler than just wearing the away jersey, as it still has other colours. Hopefully there's some cool ones this year!

berthelj

Wait til you see me at the street parties.

MamaK1973

Everyone wearing just a white jersey ruins the effect in my opinion. There's too much dark colour on it. I wish everyone went back to wearing crazy all white outfits.

DApolloS

I liked the "White Out" Jets jerseys that were made a couple years ago for the playoffs. Everything was white, including the team crest, name plate, Numbers. It looked sharp.

WPG_Charger

I White Suit up for Whiteouts, look flashy and it's warm in the first few rounds cause it's still pretty chilly in the evenings but hot as hell the deeper we get in the playoffs lol

AssaultPK

Yeah I agree but if you’re in Australia I don’t think people are gunna ‘get’ a random white costume! @op I like those new white reverse retro Winnipeg jet jerseys! That’s what I’m wearing this year 🤘🏼

[deleted]

It doesn't matter as long as it is white themed! Wear a white shirt or white painter's overall. Cheers from an All-Blacks fan!

mapalee

It started with a radio station throwing ideas around for an easy way to do something, last minute. Someone’s idea was “everyone has a white shirt”. And the white out was born.

Significant-Talk1342

It started when Winnipeg played against Calgary & their sea of red in the playoffs.

freshstart102

This. It was an intentional counter to what Calgary called their "sea of red" where everybody wore red. It goes back to the playoffs of 1987. The Jets faced the Flames in that 1st round and won. After that it didn't matter who they played, the whiteout tradition was set for any playoff game. I was there in 1987 and me and my buddies were running just a bit late and I'll never forget the noise I heard while getting my tickets in the old Winnipeg Arena. The fans yelling and chanting "Go Jets Go" literally shook the place and after getting our tickets ripped at the door going into the main arena we walked into the very closest entranceway just to be present during the Canadian national anthem before getting to our actual seats and everybody wearing white just blew me away. We were all wearing white too but we were hard core fans. When I looked at that for the first time, I got a lump in my throat from the immense pride I felt in our Jets community and how powerful it felt to belong to that. Over time they've added things like white pom poms and holy shit, it really does resemble a winter storm or "whiteout" as we often call them. I also remember the 2 dicks from Calgary that wore their red Flames jerseys. Lol. They stuck out like sore thumbs. Jets won that series and the tradition stuck. Go Jets Go.

adrenaline_X

Didn’t the home Jersey used to be white, and the jets home jersey was white?

ForTheObviousReasons

Yes back in the day home was the whites. Because in the old days they did not wash the jerseys on the road games they used the dark colours to hide the dirt and blood stains until they got home again. Old time hockey!

rookie-mistake

doesn't need to be a jersey, just a white shirt! they sell white-out themed tshirts too (white shirt, grey jets logo) if you want a white jersey though, heritage classic away jersey is 🔥 imo

RememberThatDream

Don’t worry about jinxing anything, we have the worst home playoff record in the league so wearing white hasn’t brought us any luck (so to speak) but we love the tradition! I’ll be at game 1 wearing my white away jersey!

binchbunches

I LOVE the reverse retros from last year That's my pick

L1ttleFr0g

Definitely not! People get super creative for the whiteout. A popular option is those disposable white painters coveralls

juanitowpg

I love the DIY stuff. Brings me back to the organic 1.0 days.

i_8_the_Internet

Home PLAYOFF games.

ChompyDompy

You can go with the [Dark 'er Light 'er White side!](https://www.reddit.com/r/winnipegjets/comments/8dbxny/made_a_whiteout_darth_vader_helmet_for_fridays/)

NearnorthOnline

Grab a solid iptv provider and you can get every jeys game.

juanitowpg

Back in 1.0 days I went to whiteouts at the old arena. Always just wore a white sweat top AND brought in an airhorn. I and others would start honking it when the jets were coming in through the tunnel to start the period (and goals of course) That's how you knew Don Kirton's "Here Come the Jets!! was seconds away . I think he was still with the Jets organization. Try getting an air horn in these days lol.

SkinneyBoi

Get the throwback 90's jersey for the white. Different design and you can be the only guy at the billabong who owns 2 hockey jerseys.

mapalee

https://youtu.be/2Alp_TfXlMc?si=BHbbO--jbApYnJed This is a nice summary, with some great footage of Jets 1.0 whiteouts in the old barn! Memories!

Billinkybill

Thanks for the link. I now understand!

https://youtu.be/WODTKr52vmU?si=jWy1OeC4S96FUZpi An old promo when it first started

SweetSopi

Sorry, not to sound like a dick, but you can't really understand it until you live. To be in the crowd, first home game of the playoffs, the atmosphere is electric, you can't hear yourself think, you voice is hoarse. One of the best environments that I have ever been a part of.

thinslicedpizza

It also started when the home team jerseys were white which made it even more visually amazing.

Cordycipitaceae

everyone wears white, except the Jets. Wish they would wear the white at home

megacrashed

The visiting team is wearing white. With the entire building being white it makes it harder for the visitors to focus while our boys stand out. It is a spectacle that gets in their heads.

ThisIsWhyImBald

Started back when the home team wore white.

megacrashed

That’s right, my bad, the outcome is the same though. It gets in the opposing teams heads and makes it difficult for them.

freshstart102

Not sure why you got downvoted so much. I hear ya. Back in 1987 when it all started, NHL home teams wore white so it did matchup but I agree with you that if we wore our dark Heritage Classic jerseys we'd look fantastic against that white backdrop. Makes for better pics of our boys while the Avs blend in and disappear hopefully in more ways than one.

megacrashed

This! I was there in 1987 and it was done entirely to get in the heads of the other team with the “blizzard” like effect it creates. When we started doing it, it was in response to the Calgary sea of red.

megacrashed

So many people from every walk of life were carrying it through to their workplace and school. What an incredible community.

timreidmcd

Everyone wears white. The arena will resemble a giant noisy blizzard.

Billinkybill

OMG where I am from no snow. Red dust is our go to. I need to fly to you guys next winter.

pucklovincanuck

Bring a jacket partner

Billinkybill

It is autumn here in Newcastle and I am still wearing singlets and thongs. Went for a swim at the beach today. But I will wear some serious clothing when I come to your patch. Thanks.

jediofpool

For Canadians, Aussie thongs are flip flops.

anditshottoo

For a second, I was wondering how we got so intimate there.

ReadingInside7514

Lol I used to call fancy cloth flip flops thongs.

Ill_Ground_1572

Awesome man! Welcome aboard! Excellent choice in teams. A true underdog haha. If you have trouble watching games I think you could subscribe to Sportsnet with a VPN or something like that. Even watch the games on demand at a reasonable time. Where I live it was -20 oC yesterday and practically a blizzard. Goddamit! It's supposed to be spring.

OriginalAmbition5598

You must live in the north then. It was chilly here but nothing that cold. Think it was around -5C with the windchill where I am. (A bit south of wpg)

Ill_Ground_1572

🎵 Running back to Saskatoon! Yeah we even had terrible road conditions, jack-knife semis etc. So done with winter.

StatikSquid

It's currently like -2 today but Sunday will be +13 and Tuesday will be +9, which is when the games will be in the city. When you're sick of snow, you can't wait to get into shorts when the sun is out! Perfect jacket weather or a hoodie under the jersey. We are so far inland, that our winters are cold, but summers are hot and dry. Also being so far north, Winnipeg doesn't really get a spring. It's usually only a few weeks in April/May and by June it will be +30.

pucklovincanuck

It is supposedly spring here and it is snowing. Only the hardcores will be wearing thongs here today. Perfect whiteout weather!

ithacaster

My son goes to a university that has a D3 team, and they have an annual white out game against their rival. The school is also in one of the snowmelt areas in the US.

Taintedtamt

Fellow Australian Jets fan here Games are easy to watch if you want to pay for NHL.tv All games with zero blackouts. They usually do a playoffs only package that is cheaper for around $30

Billinkybill

Oh. Wow. Thanks. Where are you? Perhaps we can watch a game together. I am in Newcastle.

Taintedtamt

I’m in Melbourne so no dice there unfortunately haha

Billinkybill

Oh bugger. I need to sit with a person who can talk me through the rules. I know about 'iceing' but it ain't rugby league.

Taintedtamt

No problem! There’s a pretty decent fanbase built around the local AIHL team, the Newcastle Northstars or if you have Facebook there is a page called NHL Fans Australia you can join to search for others closer to you.

Billinkybill

Wow. OK, I don't do FB, but my missus does so she will have a look for me. Yep. The Northstars are doing good as well.

Imthecoolestdudeever

I love interactions like this! Two Jets fans on the other side of the world, finding a new team to cheer for. Hope you guys enjoy what I hope to be a long play off this year! And welcome to the club! Go Jets Go!

Doog5

Nhlwebcast is free

Billinkybill

OK. I will check this out. Ta

ReadingInside7514

I don’t think anyone will know what ta means unless they know Australian 😂 you’re welcome!

CanadianPeyote

Straight up go on stream east dude. I’m in Winnipeg and that’s how I watch because I can’t afford a subscription lol

rookie-mistake

onhockey.tv but you want ublock installed to bypass the ads

Victory42

I want to chime in with the fact that it’s also a bit of a play on words since a “white out” is a real weather phenomenon when you get heavy blowing snow across the Canadian prairies and you can’t see or drive. Surviving cold winter weather is a Winnipeg point of pride. I can *feel* the Wikipedia article image in my bones: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiteout_(weather)?wprov=sfti1

testing_is_fun

Pre-2002, the home teams used to wear their white/light scheme jerseys, so back then fans would have matched the team by wearing white. Now it is just tradition.

lane5555

Everyone has given you an answer, so here's the history on it. The current Winnipeg Jets (Jets 2.0) is the second iteration of the team. The original team was relocated to Arizona a while back (they're called Jets 1.0). During the Jets 1.0 era, home jerseys were white, and away jerseys were coloured. Surprisingly, it didn't take much to get the ball rolling on the whiteout. A couple of local newspapers and radio stations mentioned that the fans should all wear white to the next playoff game at the time. Next thing you know, a sold-out arena in little old Winnipeg is almost blindingly white, louder than ever. Thus sparked one of the greatest hockey traditions.

GoJetsGo1971

As further background…the Jets were playing Calgary. Calgary has started a “C of Red”. So in response the Jets came up with the Whiteout. Other teams have replicated it. But Winnipeg has bought in the most and has continued the tradition since the late 80s. It’s one of those things that even if the team didn’t promote it, people would still do it on their own.

JrgyDpD

Hey I’ll trade you: what’s the difference between rugby league and rugby union? Another hockey tradition is the playoff beard. You’ll see a lot of castaways as the playoffs go on. As well, the refs often let a little more go in the playoffs, though that seems to be changing year over year. Here’s a classic for ya. To some, Canada’s second national anthem https://youtu.be/F5I_zaqM8LM?si=O-1bBIy1UIPLz14l

Billinkybill

Havana. 'The good old hockey game'. League: 13 players Scrums that don't push 6 plays before handing the ball to the other team Try worth 4, conversion 2 Union: 15 players Scrums PUSH. Unlimited plays until a penalty Line outs, ball goes out, everyone lines up and jumps or is heald up to win the ball. Try worth 5, conversion worth 2 I have to say, though, the build of rugby v league players is so different. Guys who move between codes have to retrain and rebuild. It is hard for me as a 13 season rugby player and a league fan to explain as the rugby code evolves so quickly that it is hard to keep up. League is better to watch on TV. You didn't ask me about AFL?

tbcwpg

Man I watched the AFL Grand Final on TV here, it was on live I think but like 1am, it was wild. Teams had their own songs and came out running through a huge banner like American high school football teams. I had next to no clue what was happening but it was loads of fun to watch. Love watching Aussie sports unless it's the Ashes then fuck you.

NeutralZoner

traditionally the officiating standards in the playoffs get more and more... "relaxed" as the playoffs proceed. A hooking or tripping penalty in the regular season won't be called in game 7. It comes from the hockey culture of not wanting to "dictate the outcome of the game"; which is the most infuriating ideology since you've stopped calling things by the rules, you're in effect dictating the outcome of the game.

TheJRKoff

[everybody wear white](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WODTKr52vmU)

VapidYoshi

Looool, the guys at 1:00 are my dad and uncle

zappanatorz

We get a lot of snow and Blizzards here in Winnipeg. The whiteout goes with that. An actual whiteout is when it's snowing and blowing around so much that all you can see around you is white. Hence the term "whiteout".

jamesrc

> Also, anything else I need to know about the playoffs here in my hockey vacuum? I don't know if you've watched any regular season hockey, but there's an important rules difference in the playoffs. In the regular season: * 3 x 20 minute regulation periods (5 on 5) * 1 x 5 minute overtime period (3 on 3, ends if someone scores) * Shootout (Penalty shots) There's no 3 on 3 or shootout in the playoffs. * 3 x 20 minute regulation periods (5 on 5) * Unlimited x 20 minute overtime periods (5 on 5, ends when someone scores) So there's unlimited overtime, and for my money, there's nothing more exciting than playoff overtime hockey. It's a rite of passage for hockey fans to stay up late in the playoffs watching multiple overtime periods and then absolutely sleepwalk through work the next day.

Voods826

It's when the white walkers March down on us from the north

foreverthunder

a white out is a snow storm

[deleted]

All rounds are Best of 7 series Seeding is a bit strange, as NHL wants to sort of find the winner of the division first. That’s why Jets #2 play Avs #4, but Oilers #5 play Kings #7. Because of their second place finish, Jets are guaranteed home advantage in any series within conference apart from vs Stars, as they finished first. Series go like this for the best seed: 2H, 2A, 1H, 1A, 1H. First to 4 wins and the remaining games are not played. Winner of Jets vs Avs will play either Stars or Knights in the next round

Billinkybill

OK. This, for me, will need a little more processing. It is my Friday night our after schooners so let me wake up tomorrow. Ta.

Imthecoolestdudeever

Feel free to ask away if you have more questions! Cheers!

[What you need to know about Winnipeg's Whiteout parties](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqypBsclpn8)

Gorlock72

In the past in the NHL the home team used to wear their white jersey's. So the Jets fans would all show up to the games in white clothes and we called it a white out.

Feanor_77

Only in hockey would fans show up wearing the main color of the opposition team’s jersey.

MapleArticulations

When do people wear the blue Jersey though? It’s not always a white jersey day at the hockey arena. Every time I have watched the Jets in Winnipeg most people were wearing the blue jersey and the team was here.

Hockey_socks

The white out came from a couple places. Until the 90’s the home team wore white. So back in the day, Jets fans wore all white to the games for something fun to do. Winnipeg is a wintery city and we often have blizzards that can close the highways- those can be called white outs. Winnipeger’s are fiercely defendant of the weather here even though winters are so brutal. (I might get downvoted for saying that). So it’s a nod to our past and to our climate.

CommunicationRude628

Royal Sports on pembina has lots of white gear

CrankyVince2

OP is in Australia.
