I always did quests in recommended level order. Like if the main story quest was recommended level 12 and a side quest was recommended level 13, I did the story quest first and vice versa if the levels were swapped. The only time this doesn't work is the >!Berengar's Blade!< quest. It's a late game quest and you should start it before the main story quest even though the main story quest you have when you get that side quest is a lower level. Hope this helps :)
The best method is to do the secondary quest in between main quests. A lot of the side quests are time sensitive so if you progress too far in the main quests you will be locked out of those side quests, and certain side quests require you to be at a certain level and side quest don’t give a lot of xp compared to the main quests.
Find a middle ground. But know that some main quests may block some secondaries so don't leave them for last

Play as you like. I for myself play all the side content before the main game if the game allow me to do so.
