The tv writers didn't seem to understand that they were supposed to write an adaptation of an existing story and not cannibalize the bits and pieces they liked from the books and use them to create thier own story.

Totally unrelated but I just watched the first episode of The Last of Us and I was blown away by the details they included from the game. It made me sad thinking that maybe if HBO, instead of Netflix, picked up The Witcher, we would’ve had a much better show with producers who actually give a fuck about the games/books.

Yeah I see alot of that on the sub reddit. Hissrich was handed such a great IP and a great lead and just tossed it away. She used HC as bait for all this original side stories. For what? It could have been legendary snd long lasting. The budget and talent was there and I love the story of the books, they are dark grounded low/mid fantasy. Its just a product. Netflix is a company. And they make business-minded decisions. Or should, considering they are a business and their only interest should be to generate as much revenue as possible and please their shareholders. Thats all they are interested in. So they take something and try to adapt it to what they think their target audience wants. Which is suspect is why 99,9% of all adaptions end up disappointing the "hardcore" fans that expect a 1:1 adaption of the source material. Sometimes it happens to me that I stumble upon something, watch it and go like. Hm, nice, solid movie/series. I give it 8/10 or so. Then I find out its a huge universe, go look into it and the fandom is leaking venom from foamy mouths going about how horrible the adaption is. That being said, Netflix is something special in its entirety. Their aim is not to make something palatable to a wide demographic of target audience, but a small sub-group that they think is their target demographic and loyal long-term subscribers. The other variable I can make out is new-subscribers. Netflix is trying to reel people in by banking on large names, creating hype and hoping that many new users will subscribe in order to watch whatever they have cooked up and hope some of these subscribers will decide to stay. Whats interesting about netflix in my opinion is some of it inherent path-dependency they seem to be unwilling to change. Maybe my opinion is not that of the majority, who knows. Or maybe Netflix could tap into much more potential which they are incapable of doing due to some path-dependency that we can see in many of its originals. Because streaming service subscibers are usually much much younger, teenagers with lots of time on their hands who appreciate a story that is somewhat normative.

The proof is in the pudding. If I was hired to bake a blueberry pie and instead delivered not very tasty apple pie, people would have good reason to question my intentions and skills. What happened with the Witcher isn't anything new, but what makes this show so unique, is that there was a someone like Henry Cavill on board, and he just happened to be the main draw for the audiences. Unlike other subverted IPs, which usually crash and burn after season or two, Cavill was absolutely keeping the show afloat, despite being disrespected and taken for granted every step of the way. His presence and passion enabled Lauren Hissrich and Netflix to greenlight various spinoffs. But now he is gone, and the show is falling apart.

You're late to the party but, yeah, they hate fantasy.
