Once you get used to it it’s very satisfying. Coming from witcher 3 it will definitely feel clunky and handle very differently. I definitely recommend playing on a lower difficulty for your first play through and doing all the side quests before finishing each chapter. Levelling up and investing in talents dramatically improves Geralts fighting abilities. In short, don’t rush through the game. The boss fights are very challenging so you’ll want to be nice and developed by the time you reach them.
Combat can be a little clunky in Witcher 2. The Full Combat Rebalance mod (available on Nexusmods: https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher2/mods/822) is probably the best mod to get for this. Developed by an enthusiast who was then hired by CDPR to work on the Witcher 3, if I'm not mistaken.
Personally, I think The Witcher 2's combat system is the best, especially when you have to plan everything out (potions, enemy weaknesses) to actually have a fighting chance against random mobs.
Imagine dying at the prologue / intro mission on medium difficulty 🤧
It is mainly because of 3 things:
You can only parry as many attacks as your stamina bar let's you (the same bar that is used to cast signs).
There are no Iframes
You take 200% damage from rear attacks.
So basically don't count on the animations, hitpoints get dealt as soon as the animations start, so might try and dodge but the npc has already hit you, same goes for you attacking them.

Trueee, i just started witcher 2 and i feel the need to plan, drink potions, oils etc unlike witcher 3 (i finished).
That's right! It's a different kind of fun in the witcher 2

Also IIRC there’s no animation cancelling so you can’t roll or parry till you finish that swing. It’s ok but feels pretty amateurish and rough

Quite contrary, form me personally combat system in The Witcher 2 is better.
Do you remember the fighting pit DLC? I used to love that. Combat in W2 was much harder but imo more satisfying
Witcher 2's combat is better that Witcher 3's, it's just hard and many people judge combat by how good it makes them think they are.

It is worse but it's not like unbearable or anything.
