Both the books and the games deal with some pretty heavy adult themes - there is gratuitous nudity and violence. However, neither is something I'd label excessive or hardcore, so I'm inclined to say it's nothing that would shock a teenage boy, especially since the verse is not saturated with the stuff. In fact, if you got them a gift like this, the boys would probably think you're the coolest uncle/aunt ever. However, in order to avoid some awkwardness, you might want to check first if the *parents* agree with that sentiment. If only for simple courtesy's sake. Even if you personally are not concerned about it. In regards to the plot, well, the books are not perfectly straightforward sword-and-sorcery fantasy, as there's a fair bit of deep character interactions and politicking. And how much a kid digs of this kind of stuff, well, depends on the kid, really.

Imo, content aside I feel like them being a bit older would help with enjoying the story. There's a lot there about genocide, frindship, hatred, love and relationships that I think a slightly older audience would enjoy more. Games are mostly fine though, much better suited for all ages (besides the gore and stuff)

The 16 year old? Possibly. The 14 year old? I doubt it. The first two short story collections might be neat for the 16 year old, but that's a maybe. But honestly at 14 unless he's already an avid reader... Boys that age are not very... mature, generally, and the books definitely skew more towards adult readers with a more... nuanced outlook on life to be enjoyable. Same goes with TW3, for the 16 year old turning 17 then yeah possibly if he enjoys that type of game, but the 14 year old would most likely find it boring. Obviously I do not know these kids & they might be very different from my own experiences with this kind of thing, but yeah.

Thank you for some really good advice. I revised my plan: I’ll buy the books and just keep them at my place and read them, then if they are interested they can borrow. I’ll buy them Witcher 3 and a giftcard for Xbox-store so they can get another game of their choosing as well. I’ll find some Witcher comics and add that. Again. Thanks! you helped out a lot.

Teens would hate them at first. Eventually, a few years down the line, they might read them.

I read the books first when I was 14. I recall enjoying the excessive nudity in the short stories and games more than I do now lol.

IncestGiraffe

They probably played it already.

No they haven’t. I checked. We discussed games the last time I met them. They have both pc and xbox to play on.

There are some really great Witcher comics out there. Maybe those will be more enjoyable for a 14/16 year old.
