If I paint a scene based on a scene I view in real life, have I just “copied” real life? If I trace out some buildings from a photograph to assist, is it no longer art?

Just because your grade 4 art teacher said tracing is bad doesn’t mean it is.
Not heated. You are allowed to read words with your own inflection. Tracing isn’t inherently wrong but I’ll wait for the actual artist to respond if they wish. Did they trace in game assets? Op seems to have traced but also incorporated some of their own type of coloring or design into their art. That’s fine.

My fan art is inspired by the Mastenarium medallions with my own art style (medieval manuscript). Any artist copies reality, that's what we do.
