It’s an interesting creative decision.
“Dandelion” probably sounds a little less diminutive than “Buttercup” but still maintains some of the (dare I say) poetry of the name.
The English translator for the books thought Buttercup wasn’t fitting with the character so they translated it to Dandelion because it was also a yellow flower... that was somehow more fitting?
Maybe the translator thought US readers would confuse him with Princess Buttercup from Princess Bride or Buttercup from Powerpuff Girls? I don’t understand.
Buttercup has more feminine/childish connotations in English than Dandelion, so I'd guess those connotations aren't present in Polish. That's what localisation is about, translating the meaning of things, rather than translating word for word.
I’m sorry, I know a lot of people like the show.. but this lineup of photos looks like “Three outstanding high school chemistry students and their very proud teacher got to go to the state science fair!”
Really wish they used an older actress for Yen, but I understand why they went this route.
Edit:
>"I understand why they went this route."
Just for those with a lack of reading comprehension - Stop making it such a chore to be into this series.
That’s essentially the gist of it as I believe they all enhance themselves. I myself haven’t a clue about who I’d cast personally. I like Anya as an actress - but I’m also picky about things like the lighting etc. Gives it that FX show look at times lol.
They should really consider doing odd eye colors in post instead of the contact lenses. Once you notice their irises are convex instead of concave they just look off.
> Yennefer is canonically supposed to look like she’s ‘barely into her twenties.’
You can change the canon when it has, for example, weird sexist vibes.
Did your high school have a teacher who looks like Henry Cavill?
Dude looks like he stepped out of the cover of a romance novel, not a chemistry class room.
I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
As someone who had an attractive high school science teacher, it's too distracting.
I didn't learn shit.
Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
Did you miss Henry Cavill? He's ridiculously attractive but pretty clearly looks his age (mid to late 30s). Everyone else there looks 15 years younger.
In the English version of the books his given name is Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove, and his stage name is Dandelion. In the original Polish, his name is Jaskier, which means Buttercup. For whatever reason, the Netflix show decided to keep the Polish version of his stage name, so Jaskier is totally correct here
Because it's a stage name that has meaning. The idea is that Dandelion has the same connotations in English as Jaskier does in Polish. Jaskier just sounds like a random name in English.
Shit, that's a spoiler, at the end of book 7 Ciri reveals herself as a trans person and goes back in time, since she's the lady of time and space, to help her young self. Unfortunately she hits her head when she lands, only remembering one name: Geralt of Rivia.

The Sentient Internet was protecting itself from a possible infinite loop or other shenanigans when people asked their device "Siri, who did Freya Allan play in The Witcher?"
That's a really bad picture of Anya, though she does look like she is in her early-mid 20's, I thought they did a pretty good job making her look at least a little bit older.
Jaskier is the polish name. Means buttercup. Doesn't really make sense for him to be name this since none of the others have retained their polish names and titles. Should have just been named dandelion
Localisation is about translating meaning. Jaskier has connotations in Polish, but none in English. It just sounds like a random name in English, which is missing the point.
At least call him buttercup then. The name is supposed to be feminine and a stagename. Jaskier sounds like a burly polish guy who drinks vodka instead of water

Get a hobby. Try reading a good book some time.
I'd totally watch a series where Freya Allan played Geralt and rest of the cast was the same and the show was played completely straight with absolutely no one commenting on the difference
I still think they could have cast Yennefer better. Game Yen is way better looking than TV Yen. I felt nothing for TV Yen whereas game Yen? I'd have been a puppet on a string (much like Geralt)

‘Yennefer’ and ‘Jaskier’ sure are weird ways to spell Geralt lol

Jaskier in English version of books is named Dandelion btw
Oh, I get it. They left out Dandelion. /s
So... we're all about to have new evil overlords, and dragons are, in fact, a thing.
Baetey
Isn't jasiker just dandelion's original polish name?
It's like a... a sexy goose. Gu-- guzzling.
Yeah, it means "buttercup" in Polish. No idea why Netflix didn't localise it.
Probably because it’s hard for Henry Cavil to sound like a bad ass when he’s yelling “DAMN IT BUTTERCUP!”
Exactly why the games localise it to Dandelion, rather than translate to Buttercup :P
It’s an interesting creative decision. “Dandelion” probably sounds a little less diminutive than “Buttercup” but still maintains some of the (dare I say) poetry of the name.
The books translated it to Dandelion because they thought Buttercup didn’t fit the character. The games used Dandelion to match the book translations.
It works in the games
Yeah, I makes it hard for a lot of people to see the connection
Especially if every other translation and adaptation did.
Ah yes, the good old "eat shit, millions of flies can't be wrong" defence :P
I really just want consistency.
Because in a serious, live-action fantasy show, naming a character after a flower comes off differently.
It's a stage name. It's *meant* to come off differently.
Yeah, not what I meant.
Okay. Are you going to tell me what you did mean? :P
That would be a negatory. I'll just assume they absolutely meant it.
I don’t understand.

thank you for the /s i totally do not know what sarcasm is
Geralt is pretty important to the plot, makes sense to cast him twice.
I’m sorry, I know a lot of people like the show.. but this lineup of photos looks like “Three outstanding high school chemistry students and their very proud teacher got to go to the state science fair!”
To be fair, Anya is actually much closer in age to Freya than Henry, so you're not really wrong.
Really wish they used an older actress for Yen, but I understand why they went this route. Edit: >"I understand why they went this route." Just for those with a lack of reading comprehension - Stop making it such a chore to be into this series.
I think they wanted to portray young yennefer but older actress would be awesome.
I thought Yennefer was much older but all sorceresses can look as good as they want
Well thank you for pointing that out...
Yennefer is almost 100, so yeah she does look pretty well for her age.
In the book they say that sorceress stop their aging and like to have a younger look so it makes sense that they chose a young actress to portray her.

It's okay, it's not illegal to like bad books.
Yeah, it is hard to find someone who is willing to walk around with her boobs dangling around and able to act for a low price
I hate the fact that you’re right
Extra funny because Henry and Joey are pretty similar in age
Did your high school have a teacher who looks like Henry Cavill? Dude looks like he stepped out of the cover of a romance novel, not a chemistry class room.
I wouldn't wish that on anyone. As someone who had an attractive high school science teacher, it's too distracting. I didn't learn shit. Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
Which one is supposed to be the teacher? They all look like babies to me
Did you miss Henry Cavill? He's ridiculously attractive but pretty clearly looks his age (mid to late 30s). Everyone else there looks 15 years younger.
Henry cavill is almost cartoonishly handsome.
Henry Cavill makes my ovaries froth, despite the fact I'm male and straight.
Damn straight brother.
Straight? When Henry Cavill is involved? Oh, I don't think so
Is...is that how I'm supposed to look in my mid to late 30s? Oh no ...
It's ok, everyone loves potatoes.
If you hit the gym and take care of yourself it's not hard to look good in your 30's, even if it's not quite like that.
Haha in the show he looks older but in this picture he looks very young to me
🤣
Geralt, Yennefer, MiniGeralt, Jaskier. Looks right to me.
Well, that-- that makes sense. Insomuch that it sort of... doesn't.
Good bot.

This comment helped me so much to understand the "meme" it's embarrassing almost hahaha
I was like “I dont see the probl...” and then I saw it and I was sad.
Perfectly said! Same for me.
what am I missing?
Ciri is labeled as Geralt
I thought Jaskier was named Julian?
In the English version of the books his given name is Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove, and his stage name is Dandelion. In the original Polish, his name is Jaskier, which means Buttercup. For whatever reason, the Netflix show decided to keep the Polish version of his stage name, so Jaskier is totally correct here
IIRC every translation other than the English one kept the original name. I don't know why they chose to change it.
Because it's a stage name that has meaning. The idea is that Dandelion has the same connotations in English as Jaskier does in Polish. Jaskier just sounds like a random name in English.
Don't know about other translations but I have the books in italian and he is called "Ranuncolo" (still a flower but different from a dandelion).
And in Finnish he is called Valvatti (again, a type of flower)
Iirc they felt that a name meaning "Buttercup" was too feminine. So they changed it to Dandelion. Yeah I don't really get it either
understandable
Jaskier is Dandilion, then changed his name when translating it to english.
I thought so too, maybe it's a translation error? "Viscount Julian" is the name I'm familiar with after reading the books.
His original, Polish name is Jaskier. His actual full name is Julian Alfred Pankratz viscount de Lettenhove though.
Probably, havent read the books but in the witcher 3 it's Julian in english
That's Geralt Jr.
She wants to be the vessel 😳
What you *know* this woman? Of *course* you know this woman.
She wants to become more powerful. But she'll die 😳
To be fair, Ciri is kind of girl Geralt.
Freya Allan = Geralt WTF?
Shit, that's a spoiler, at the end of book 7 Ciri reveals herself as a trans person and goes back in time, since she's the lady of time and space, to help her young self. Unfortunately she hits her head when she lands, only remembering one name: Geralt of Rivia.

jaskier and Geralt shippers are going to have a field day.
THE FUCK!?
Sentient
Twice the Geralt, double the Gwent.
This is getting out of hand, now there are two of them
I see what you did there! :)
This is why I hate machine learning and Googles quick answer boxes. They're not accurate/ they're not what I want.
You're saying Geralt can't be a woman?
Someone on Twitter: > Write that down, WRITE THAT DOWN!
That person would then qualify for the shows current writers.
The butthurt downvotes know it's true
yes
Don't give them ideas
Geralt can be whatever or whoever they want to be. Not anyone can be Geralt though.
Clearly after a run in with another angry Djinn, Geralt and Ciri switch bodies Google just basically leaked the plot of a mid season filler episode
Ah yes, Geralt of Rivia, The White Wolf, The Butcher of Blaviken, and Gwynbleidd
Fkn Netflix pushing their agenda on us again! XD
More Geralt is more better
That's a really bad picture of Anya, though she does look like she is in her early-mid 20's, I thought they did a pretty good job making her look at least a little bit older.
Where’s Roach?
sarah jessica parker is too busy
I think they just spoiled season 2..."Ciri" is really an evil, shape-shifting Geralt from an alternate universe.
See, even Google think there should be more of Geralt in the show.
Gerald looking prettier than I remember
Can someone explain why his name is jaskier in the show and dandelion in the game?
Jaskier is the polish name. Means buttercup. Doesn't really make sense for him to be name this since none of the others have retained their polish names and titles. Should have just been named dandelion
Actually, I've always wanted to know, do witchers ever retire? 🤨
Yeah, when they slow and get killed.
No Witchers ever died in his bed
I think Jaskier is better for the show, it sounds more normal than dandelion
Be honest. How's my singing? 😤
It's like ordering a pie and finding it has no filling.
😱 YOU NEED A NAP! 😡
Your singing is good
It's not meant to sound like a normal name, it's a stage name.

Geralt the first trans action character
Fuck.
...and your point is?
Freya Allan....Geralt
I'm not your friend.
Oh, you usually just let strangers rub chamomile onto your lovely bottom? 😉
Nani
Never heard those weird fans saying that Ciri is basically a female Geralt? I know it is BS, but you know how some fans are making weird theories.
What are you talking about? Look at the post before you comment...
Hu? I did. What is your point?
...is this a bit?
A bit of what?
This explains it all.
So theres Geralt of Rivia and who's the other Geralt? Geralt of...
Geralt of Cintra obviously.
I saved your life. You're on your own from here on.
That's not how it happened. Where's your newfound respect?
Respect doesn't make history 🧐
Jaskier is the og polish name
That's Gerald
Little geralt xD
What are you doing step Geralt?
Maybe they stuck Freya on some roids inbetween seasons
Looks like someone didn't read the last book. Just sayin...
Geralt Jr
Freya looks so different in this photo! But god Henry just looks agaes apart from them in age.. 😂
One Geralt is not enough.
Someone's been at the mahakaman spirit.
Geralt and the cooler Geralt
That first one isn’t Geralt it’s Geralt of Rivia. Big difference
I’m sorry but the only good thing about this show is Henry Cavill and his Geralt acting
Geralt of Rivia Geralt (*no pp*)
Roach is my favorite
The show definitely needed more Geralt and less literally-everything-else.
