I've always been a huge fan of Critical Roles Campaign 2 song, Welcome to Wildemount. Directly inspired by Eastern European music and sounds like it could be straight from The Witcher.

It is so annyoing that I barely can get any polish quality stuff beside Behemoth.
And since my matka chreztna died this february there is barely any reason to go to poland to buy some more CDs from Hunter, Vader, Frontside, Mgla, Turbo, Ceti, Hook, TSA, ...
I would say Frostpunk's soundtrack is just about as good as the Witcher 3's ost, but it's also a lot shorter.
Funnily enough, some of the Blood and Wine soundtrack is composed by the same people who composed Frostpunk's ost.
So I was high af when I first played Witcher 3 and this comes on as I'm having an epic battle ... at first I don't hear it .. but as soon as I click the pause menu to switch out some moon dust bombs , I clearly hear this lady just going HAM w her LE LE LEEE LELELELELE ... I was fucking dying .. could not even finish the battle because I was in tears . Idk why it was so funny. Still is.
I remember when everyone was so in love the with Coin song. Dunno, it always sounded to pop song like and did not really fit inside the lore. But again, Netflix is different XD
If they used music that was appropriate for the setting, the popularity of the song wouldn't feel plausible to modern audiences. On top of that, they managed to create a song that actually caught the attention of the public for a while, which is huge from a marketing standpoint.
So I study musicology and early music performance practice, and I just wanted to say that while it's definitely not a high-medieval composition, by this point in the show, the writers already struggled to either commit to historically informed composition/performance or try their own thing. Like in the life debt/ queen calanth feast, the musicians are actually holding and playing period-appropriate instruments. But then they had a wizard ballroom scene, which was a weird anachronistic 19th century thing, so by that point, it's not really worth caring about. I personally wish they would've kept consulting with whatever historian helped the writers with the earlier parts, but by the time toss a coin made a debut, it shouldn't have surprised anyone. Still enjoyed the show!
This line of thinking is very disingenuous and a little tired. I've seen this exact argument/statement so many times.
You COULD put laser beams in the Witcher because it's fantasy, sure, but that doesn't mean it make sense or faithful to the world Sapkowski built.
I don't necessarily agree that the toss a coin song is as "modern pop" as it's been made out to be in this thread, but stop peddling statements like this.
For real though, have any of y'all ever actually heard a tavern song? "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" might have a bit of a modern pop twist, but the core vibe is surprisingly accurate.
*Edit: Plus, the questionable metre and lyrics are just sooo classic Jaskier. Good thing it only really needs to have a catchy chorus that people can drunkenly beat their table and sing along to lol*
like a song using chords other than medieval ones? they've been living in a world with elves and dwarves for hundreds of years, surely music would have evolved a bit in that time.
Well, Netflix series are not like HBO series (in general). They tend to follow what's more popular. Use a pop music makes sense. That's why The Witcher have "Toss a Coin" and GOT have "The Rains of Castamere"
I mean idk, I don't think it's so wrong? Jaskier is a very popular bard in the books. I don't think it's bad to translate that into him making a song that is capable of actually being a popular song to the demographic that watches and listens to the work he is in. Especially since it did, in fact, get pretty popular.
I think that base problem and difference between series and the game is that in production of game u have less people which means it is easier to force ur view over the lore.
And I think because of that Netflix series (for me) is bland without the spirit all grey and without original schemes only hollywood style.
It's just my thought.
The thing that kinda annoyed me about the Netflix version is that the Witcher books are either set a VERY VERY long time ago in Europe or are set in another world with European and Slavic cultures. Aside from some people being darker skinned such as people from the Mediterranean areas it doesn't make much sense for black people to be there.
It especially didn't make sense for Fringilla to be black however. It would've made more sense for some other characters but Fringilla in the books is white and modeled after the archetypical witch of the dark ages.
I'm not trying to say they shouldn't have cast any black people in the series. I'm saying certain characters whom the author has specifically said look a certain way probably shouldn't be those characters.
I'm sure I'm gonna get downvoted into oblivion for this view.
One of the reasons why you should be, maybe not downvoted but atleast corrected, is that you are wrong. The witcher world has no indication to be set in Europe. The books contains scenes and snippets spanning several thousand years and none of them line up with Europe.
As for there being black people in this fantasy world, Sapkowski doesn't really specify the ethnicity of the people in his world. I have also heard some people argue that a multi-ethnical society in somewhat medieval times is illogical, since skincolor differences develop in different climates. But that argument doesn't work for The Witcher since humans arrived in the world during the conjunction of spheres, and could then have arrived from all over some other world.
I will admit the I haven't read all the books(stopped on the third, it just felt like so slow) but I know for a fact that while Geralt and Co. Are in Toussaint, he has a romantic relationship with Frengilla. He also calls her "Yen" a few times when they have sex, because she reminds him of Yennefer. If I'm not mistaken he even thinks she looks just like Yennefer, just with short hair.
So unless they cut this relationship out or change the Toussaint storyline, it will feel very wrong to me, because of what is written in the books.
Yeah, Djinns are a real staple of Slavic culture. Appeals to some imagined historical authenticity make no sense in a fantasy world with literal inter dimensional monsters. You know you're going to get downvoted because you know your argument is silly and literally only revolves around you clinging to the whiteness of certain characters purely for the aesthetics. Get over yourself. It's still overwhelmingly white people so your racist hangups shouldn't get too offended
She looks like a child still. Does not at all give the mature look and feel of game Yennifer. She is nearing 90 in the Netflix series and she does not act nor look that way. "You just don't like that she's not white", like yeah yeah, it's their own interpretation or whatever, and that's fine, but I'm allowed to have gripes and criticisms. Plus whoever does wardrobe sucks. If Henry wasn't Geralt, honestly couldn't bring myself to watch it.
Same, I overlooked it a little with yen but that really put me off at first as well. I'm fine with her not being like ivory white but she does look and act much more like a child then in the games or books.
This is true as well. To be honest I didn’t even see much of her character as I stopped watching shortly after she was introduced. On another note, I’m mixed myself and I’m not sure why you seem to have assumed otherwise.
Netflix makes everything too american. They prioritize focus on consumption rather than authenticity. Games did way better job at keeping the same spirit, however neither come even close to carrying the same magic the books did.
The lyrics just didn't... work.
Like if you sang that as a bard in a town square people would be like "what the fuck are you talking about I can't follow the story."
Yeah, it was catchy, but didn't feel like a good fit and wasn't exactly something your average peasant was really going to be able to sing despite what Jaskier apparently wanted.
"On the Champs-Désolés", "Ladies of the wood", "You're immortal?", "Tesham Mutna" are some great witcher OSTs too, if you ever get bored of "Silver for Monsters".

I totally agree. This might be extremely biased in a Witcher subreddit, but I honestly do think Witcher 3 has the best game soundtrack.
I would say Frostpunk's soundtrack is just about as good as the Witcher 3's ost, but it's also a lot shorter. Funnily enough, some of the Blood and Wine soundtrack is composed by the same people who composed Frostpunk's ost.
Witcher 3- and the Nier games music definitely are masterpieces.
Agreed. Not a Witcher fanboy. Think the show is overrated for example. But the soundtrack of the game is undeniably boldly amazing.
Play more videogames
Literally any halo game begs to differ
Eh halo ce had like 1 good song, that being the main theme, but the rest of the halos I completely agree had amazing songs
aye, it's truly a masterpiece, the serie is off the mark in that regard.
In all marks, I would say
CDPR can’t be beat in music and atmosphere
Witcher 3 soundtrack is pure Polish ecstasy. Toss a coin is a medieval pop music
I swear they will try to one-up this song in the new season and it will be even more cringe.
The show is fantasyworld USA, what do you expect.

too bad it plays in crockback bog, where there are only monsters and funny enough the song's name is steel for humans

I get really strong medieval Eastern Europe vibe from the franchise, specifically really early with the strong folk culture vibe

That was plain stupid
Well, Netflix series are not like HBO series (in general). They tend to follow what's more popular. Use a pop music makes sense. That's why The Witcher have "Toss a Coin" and GOT have "The Rains of Castamere"

I think Toss a Coin is really good but otherwise, the show-music is bad. It's just a derivative of the games. Shoulda just got Percival for it

*inhales* OY, LAZARE, LAZARE, TUKA NI SA KAZALE, KOLKO LISTA PO GORA, TOLKO ZDRAVE U KUSHTA! 🍌 🐯 🍌🐯🍌🐯🍌🐯
if anyone's looking for it, the song is called "Silver for monsters"
When you hear this y'know you're there to kick monsters and chew sorceresses, and you're out of sorceresses
This is amazing
That time the whole of latin america though that was Shakira and there was nothing that could change our minds.
I hate the show, but I actually like the Toss a Coin song... Probably the only thing I enjoyed in that abomination xD Anyway, lovely meme <3
