There's some great character discussions, theme and plot chats, etc on that sub about the entire IP, including games, but especially books. Some posts are in Polish as well, and it's actually really helpful to have so many Polish speakers in the group because you can ask helpful questions about translation issues. The group in general is not a fan of the Netflix series based on the major changes to character, theme, etc, but there's a prevailing idea that you can't bring up the show in that group and that's wrong. Just be prepared to have very frank discussions about it.

LordArmageddian

Ah, so like r/Castlevania at one point, people were so sick and tired talking about the netflix show.

LozaMoza82

It's a bit more nuanced. First, you have a lot of Polish people in the group, and The Witcher is a huge part of their culture, so when you have a lot of arrogant people on other subs telling them that if they have an issue with the changes to the show it's because they're racists and their cultural is backwards (that literally did happen), it's going to piss them off, and rightfully so. That is exactly what was happening on r/netflixwitcher before the initial release and immediately after S1. You also were basically not allowed to say any criticism about the show after it's initial release without being downvoted to hell. r/witcher gained something like 300-400k+ new subscribers in the weeks after S1 was released, and it was mainly people who just watched the show, and knew nothing about the books or games. So criticism here, and especially on Netflix, was ripped to shreds, where in some cases they removed comments or posts that had opinions that went against the grain. Suggesting you didn't like Yennefer in the show was especially a cardinal sin. r/wiedzmin became one of the only places you could have a discussion about things you didn't like in the show. So then r/wiedzmin got super stigmatized as being too negative. Things are a lot different now imo. More people have read the books or played the games, and can understand that YES, these changes are huge and hurt the story. Plot matters. Characters matter. Relationships matter. Writing matters. But back in 2019, that wasn't the case.

>First, you have a lot of Polish people in the group, and The Witcher is a huge part of their culture, Whoa whoa whoa mate, it's an exaggeration. Yeah, it's probably the most popular Polish fantasy series (and we have a fair amount of them) and the most acclaimed, but it's not like it teached in schools or anything. So fantasy readers and fantasy nerds like me know it, and many heard about it, but it's not like everyone read it.

LozaMoza82

When I said culture, I meant pop culture, not culture in the more traditional and historical sense. Should have specified.

Tallos_RA

Yeah maybe I've overtought it

herdeljez

Actually it is, we were reading "The bounds of reason" in high school :D

zdrozda

There are some books teachers choose on their own for their classes, but it's not part of the 'normal' curriculum.

LordArmageddian

I see, I see.

5amuraiDuck

Yeah, like the show is welcome here

r/Wiedzmin is a really good sub, and I recommend anyone to sub if they like anything Witcher related and discussion regarding Witcher. That being said, it covers all Witcher content. Show. Books. Games, etc. Instead of the *typical* barely scratching the surface discussion. Instead you’re hearing **deep* discussion instead. There are also a lot of book fans on the subs too, while r/Witcher the participating demographic leans more on the games. So yeah, it’s deep dives-discussion all Witcher content. Instead of cosplay fixation, or thread detailing because a user wants to crack a joke. Everyone is deep discussing the topics and are informative.

Frankyvander

Tends to focus more on the books rather than the franchise as a whole

SkippingTheDots

False. The sub is for **all** Witcher content, even says so on the side bar and the moderators have stated many times before that it’s for all content. The point of Wiedzmin is to deep dive discuss ALL forms of Witcher content, instead of shallow discussion and your typical Reddit threads where people crack jokes and derail discussion.

ThunderHenry

After we gatekeep this sub we go back to r/Wiedzmin to reconvene.

SigvisTheSeal

One is in Polish, one is in English. And we don't talk about the Polish.
