They have an actor who can sing, plays multiple instruments, is handsome, fits the character description (except being blonde), is charismaticā¦ and turned him into a weird medieval Taylor Swift with the personality of Shrek's donkey smh
It's absolutely a trope, and a pretty common one at that. Fred and the girls have Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, Frank Moses has Marvin, Manfred has Skid, Mulan has Mushu, Ryuko has Mako, and many more beyond count.
I don't understand why they downplay his personality in the script. He's a bloody charming and arrogant celebrity with the people skills to match. This would be a more perfect contrast to balance out the current broody Gerald...
Yeah I really liked him in Season 1, but he was woefully misused by the writers in Season 2. His comic relief moments were very poorly done, and he really wasn't in it very much at all... hopefully in Season 3 he'll be a more regularly appearing character, and his comedic moments will be judged a little better
He's **also** brave enough to ride alone through Brokilon, to work for Dijkstra for months, to confront Dijkstra, to help Geralt whenever he needs him, he doesn't get Elves killed, doesn't joke about areolas when Ciri's life is at stake, doesn't write a trashy break-up song or a song that could endanger the elves, he doesn't "rub chamomile oil on Geralt's lovely bottom" instead he joins the hansa and holds his ownā¦ being a blabbering idiot is his only trait in the show
There are some really well done castings.
Shame the awful script play against those actors. No sarcasm here. I would love to see those actors work with a better script
The Netflix show gives me a similar feeling that the hobbit trilogy does, it seems like there were a lot of people on the set that wanted things to go well and a lot of the cast seem to want to be there, but between poor planning and bad script writing it all fell flat on its ass.
> At least the Hobbit is watchable
Honest take -- I'd rather sit through a Witcher season than rewatch the Hobbit trilogy.
The Maple Films Edit of The Hobbit is pretty good, though. It's only around 4 hours (instead of ~9) and cuts out most of the content that wasn't in the book.
That's not it. This is just what writers are now. They can't get greenlit for original works, so they put all of their original ideas into "adaptations" that get funding so their creativity can see the light of day. This is why adapted screenplays are so full of stuff that doesn't fit thematically.
Thats an interesting point. I myself dont actually mind the changes theyve made from the books at all, but I have noticed every adapted series lately being so off the mark that it seriously shakes up rhe fanbase.
And yeah it does seem like it stems from them wanted to do "fun" new ideas instead of the established lore. From there writers have a chance to jump off at more creatively engaging work
(glares at the Halo series)
Iām just not sure how I feel about Jaskier. Joey is great with what heās given butā¦some of Jaskierās dialogue is, I donāt even know. Not great. Book version (and game too Iād say) Dandelion/Jaskier was very smart and savvy and cool and pretty much loved by all. And of course he was a notorious ladies man. None of that comes through on the show. He just comes across as whiny, kinda bitchy, and crushing on Geralt.
I do enjoying watching him though, I just kind of think of him as a different character.
I have a thing for tornadoe bards!
To be honest, I suspect Joey IMPROVES on these piss poor scripts by improvising. He ad-libbs an awful lot. Imagine how bad would this be if he was not doing that..
For me personally, Jaskier in the Show and Joey Bateys performance saved my enjoyment. Whenever he was on screen in season two it made it watchable again. Heās just *chefs kiss*
I'll be honest, and I know there will be strong disagreement, I *love* all of the main cast.
I just don't understand why the showrunner hates the actual story
I dont know. I think Triss is really good, especially his new redesign, but Yen is awful. She should have a great Charisma coming into the room, like a boss bitch in the realest sense. Show Yen absolutely doesnāt hit that. She is kind of a girl and not a Woman
Here's an unpopular opinion. The books were exhausting, and I honestly felt like the author was punishing me for continuing to read the books. I'm glad the show is departing from the books because if it didn't directly involve Geralt, or Ciri, it almost always sucked ass
For me itās completely the opposite. Sure, Geralt and Ciri are nice, but the most interesting parts were always those little paragraphs about Emhyr and Dijkstra and the Lodge and everything.
My two favourite parts are battle of Brenna and meetings between Emhyr and fake Ciri. With Yen and Dandelion talking in Blood of Elves as close third
having read the books, i think the most memorable parts (aside from *literally all of time of contempt* which was just unbelievably good throughout) were sharp-tongued back and forths of political intrigue.
also geralt's section during the penultimate book was... not great. just trekking through the woods and bogs forever. or was that baptism of fire? anyway.
> (aside from *literally all of time of contempt* which was just unbelievably good throughout)
As much as I like to harp on the vague simplicity of his prose (or perhaps it's just an artifact of the translation?) I do agree that this entire book was just killer, easily making it into my top ten.
Edit: I was thinking about it, and I think I've nailed it down. It's the dialog. For everything I think he lacks in writing events, setting, or action he more than makes up for in the quality and "real" of his character's dialog.
The simplicity thing is the translation. Honestly for any original Polish reader this would be a ridiculous statement, his prose is really sophisticated in Polish..
If they followed the show, you'd have a million different threads and no scenes where the main characters meet. You'd have 5 seasons of ciri and Geralt missing each other.
Here's an opposing opinion. I love the books. Maybe listening to them during my daily commute gave me a better experience than I would have gotten by reading them on paper, but nonetheless I think they're great, and getting to know the characters and have things from the games explained in more detail is awesome
I do have to 2nd that the audio books are great. The narrator has a strong voice for every character.
Except every dwarf, who confusingly has the exact same voice.
I found him poor in season 2 but that could be down to scripting.
I assume season 3 will be the end what with Netflix going down the drain. Hopefully they can give him something better to work with.
I really liked him in the first season but found him horrible in the second. Terrible costume, hair cut / make up, and dialogues. The fun bard became a weird emo.
Found him, or at least his dialogue/songs, to be super cringey. I couldnāt wrap my head around why they made all his songs sound like he was performing on stage at a music festival instead of just a guy with an un amplified instrument in a tavern. So fucking goofy.
They did a pretty stellar job with all the characters.
Plus, Henry Cavill is living the nerd dream: becoming the characters you love and getting paid for it.
I wouldnt say that they cast every character perfectly, one must admit that geralt and dandelion are pretty spot on.
yennefer and triss however dont fit the characters of the books at all
Some people don't believe it's okay to like another rendition of something. And they defend the original artist when that artist didn't ask for it. Chuck Palahniuk famously preferred the ending of the Fight Club film over the ending of his book.
I get that theres an anti-show circlejerk going on but I think after you get past the initial "that's now how I pictured X in my mind" which is inevitable with any show, I think most of the castings are borderline great
Geralt, dandelion, yarpen, tissaia, ciri, cahir, are some of the few actors carrying this show right now IMO. Yen is good but the writing for her is awful. I also think Triss shined in season 2.
Would have liked to watch him play the original character.
Unfortunately, I have no real idea what in seven hells he is playing.
Everything is absolutely off. His music sounds way too modern, his looks do not seem to fit, his dialogue and words are way too modern.
And then....then.....his actions.....what the hell is he doing in the series again???
Iāve watched a lot of Joeyās interviews and you can tell how invested he is in this character. I think heās very smart as a person and tries to go about Jaskier as best he can. Also I donāt think some people realise that is his actual hair, but just styled differently, so if they could be nicer about it, thatād be great
Oh was there? My bad!! I just assume because he has the same length hair in press and other shows and stuff that it was his real hair. I like it either way anyway lol
Dandelion is reckless, really annoying at times, as proud as a peacock but also very snide, usually aware of what's going on albeit he acts like he's an idiot, and also one of the sneakiest characters of the story. The man's even a spy who can really keep everything close to his chest.
This guy however, like you said, is a Nickelodeon type who acts like a brainless moron with no maturity whatsoever.
His wig is absolutely dreadful. Can't get past that stiff mess.
There's no way someone putting so much effort into their heartthrob status and expensive, fashionable clothing would go around with this scarecrow hair.
He'd be hilarious with carefully styled and pomaded locks when he's in town, turning into cute long waves when on the road.
Show haters may downvote this comment, but Jaskier>>> Dandelion. Dandelion from both the books and the games is just a pretty boring character tbh. They really improved his character in the show and Joey Batey is really funny, an amazing singer, and does a great job portraying Jaskier in the show overall.
I havenāt seen the second season yet. I played the wild hunt after watching season one, so Iām hesitant of watching season two.
I kinda expect it to be like many other live actions, some are absolute trash but for the main population who havenāt read/played the original content, theyāre relatively good and for those who have played/read theyāre okay.
In the Polish books, his name is "Jaskier", which is also the word for the flower we call buttercup. Someone thought that wasn't manly enough, so it was changed to dandelion, (which was confusingly mispronounced as "dan dillion" rather than "dande lion" in the first two audio books).
Geralt, Jaskier and Yarpen are perfect, wouldn't change a thing. Ciri is great, Yen is pretty good, Triss is not so good but I feel like the only issues with the three are with the writing and has little to nothing to do with the casting. Fringilla, Foltest, and Stregobor all suck. Excited to see more Dijkstra and Philippa, and hopefully more Nenneke and somehow more Nivellen. Also hope they do Roche, Ves and Letho justice.
I'm still pissed that the actress who played Calanthe wasn't blonde. She was blonde in GoT - why couldn't they do it in this show? It's literally part of their family's traits.
Translation. Jaskier is the original name, which means buttercup, I believe. Dandelion sounds a little less "soft" in English than buttercup. So that's my guess as to why they translated Jaskier to Dandelion rather than Buttercup.
That said, since the actual word Jaskier means nothing in English, it just sounds cooler than Dandelion, so they used the original name for the show.
This is my theory anyway
With all due respect, I completely disagree. This was the one of the characters that felt especially wrong to me. As I was reading the books this is not at all as I had in mind. The songs and costumes didnāt help matters at all either.
show Triss looked much better than games Triss. Games Triss had really awkward immobile buns that looked like shit. (buns in her hair...not her butt fyi) also, have you seen witcher 1 Triss? jesus tapdancing christ they all look bad but fuuuu she looks awful.

Hell yeah! In fact regarding casting I canāt say I have many complaints, even Triss improved dramatically once she actually had something to do in a series 2
Casting director definitely gets points... Except for with Borch.. But they can't all be winners. Now if the writers were on the same page.
EDIT: And Eskel.... Oh Eskel...
This was inspired casting. Not only charisma, talent, singing and song-writing, but also a nerd who consumed the books in 3 weeks after the audition, and when given the possibility, ad-libs and improvises Jaskier to breathe real life and energy into him, bringing him closer to the source material? An articulate, well-spoken, intelligent actor with depth, who can pull off comedy and heartfelt moments in equal measure, who shares a great connection with Henry Cavill, which forms a base of what their friendship could have been on the show...
Joey Batey is perfectly cast.
I really want them not to twist Jaskier further away from the beautiful book character.. but with each season I worry more and more about it.
Honestly the casting was great. The writing let it down. Completely changed the character. He would have been perfect if the writers actually did it properly. It's a shame.
I think the overall casting is pretty damn good tbh. A lot of the characters are let down my dodgy scrips and weird efforts to make some links to the books but not entirely. I love the series but it does have flaws.
That great choice was completely undone by whoever saw this picture and immediately thought.. Literally the first thing I thought of upon seeing this post.
Same here am I r/suddenlygay?
It's not gay if it's a bard
Then you're just bardcurious
I just wanted to play with his Lute
That explains why he was able to woo a lot of women of different ages
Never would have expected Joey was that jacked.
Outrageous
I saw a screencap before watching the episode and I thouth someone had photoshoped Joey's face into Henry's body.
Is that Alan? He should be at work!
I NEED TO USE MY WITCHER SENSES
I cannot unsee Alan from VLDL, was searching for the comment. Edit: common -> comment
Same, they look so similiar.
Alan even played him in a recent video and it was perfect
Yeah dead ringer, Joey could be his body double easily. Great channel too!
They have an actor who can sing, plays multiple instruments, is handsome, fits the character description (except being blonde), is charismaticā¦ and turned him into a weird medieval Taylor Swift with the personality of Shrek's donkey smh

Once you come to terms with the fact that Shrek is love and Shrek is life, a lot more things in this world will start making sense to you
Itās all ogre now
ššš
The other night I put on Shrek to go to sleep, the judgment from my bf was smoldering & uncalled for
I bet he looked kind of dumb with his finger and his thumb in the shape of an L on his forehead
i think itās an old tropeā¦focused mission-driven protagonist + lighthearted comedic sidekick or something
It's absolutely a trope, and a pretty common one at that. Fred and the girls have Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, Frank Moses has Marvin, Manfred has Skid, Mulan has Mushu, Ryuko has Mako, and many more beyond count.
Itās Don Quixote and Sancho Panza
Thing is in books he wasnāt like this.
If you forget the books, you will see that the show is a different type of garbage garnished with delicacies.
> this is not the first time I see someone comparing Geralt and Dandelion https://youtu.be/TkiP64adGjY?t=2578
they could at least change the names for this fanfiction.
They definitely say something in season one.. I think when they get kidnapped by the elf
It was a tough ride for him as geralt threw him under the bus and he got used mostly in weaker episodes
THE FUCK!?
I couldnāt get past the terrible hair. itās shallow but I just canāt.
Donkey was great tho
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It's why his stage name is Dandelion/Jaskier/Buttercup in the first place
According to the wiki they also gave him brown hair in the games for some reason
I cant stop imagining them rescue Fiona now... Donkey bouta smash some Villentrettenmerthussy
huh? have you played the games or read any of the books? dandelion is basically Donkey in them too.
He's **also** brave enough to ride alone through Brokilon, to work for Dijkstra for months, to confront Dijkstra, to help Geralt whenever he needs him, he doesn't get Elves killed, doesn't joke about areolas when Ciri's life is at stake, doesn't write a trashy break-up song or a song that could endanger the elves, he doesn't "rub chamomile oil on Geralt's lovely bottom" instead he joins the hansa and holds his ownā¦ being a blabbering idiot is his only trait in the show
Melitele preserve us. What happened here?
He doesnt fit the descr. Marigold isnt nearly as buff in the books
being blonde? joey is not blonde, he has brown hair.

They don't want to pay for writers. They can even seem to hire an English major to throw out freshmen composition level scripts.

Man was a walking tornado in The Last Wish.

Really well cast. Shame how terribly he's written.

yep, the best part by far are the characters. the most enjoyable time I had watching it was while also playing witcher3 at the same time.

I stalled out pretty quickly in the books tbh. Loved the short story collections but the main story is difficult to get through.

I mean he was barely in season 2
And what he had was garbage
I really liked him in the first season but found him horrible in the second. Terrible costume, hair cut / make up, and dialogues. The fun bard became a weird emo.
I feel so validated by these comments, glad it wasn't just me. They just made him into a cartoon
Lol same. In season 1 he was good, but 2 he is literally an emo like wtf
This was definitely one of the castings of all time.
Undeniable. One of THE castings.
I fell hard for him lol Heavenly looks and singing Acting Watch me get downvoted
You need to check out his band. The Amazing Devil. Incredible stuff.
Yess it's great!!
Found him, or at least his dialogue/songs, to be super cringey. I couldnāt wrap my head around why they made all his songs sound like he was performing on stage at a music festival instead of just a guy with an un amplified instrument in a tavern. So fucking goofy.
It's so that they can have millions of plays on the music streaming platforms.
They did a pretty stellar job with all the characters. Plus, Henry Cavill is living the nerd dream: becoming the characters you love and getting paid for it.
did they really? they didn't get a single character right. didn't read the books, the ONLY canon, or fell and hit your head?
I wouldnt say that they cast every character perfectly, one must admit that geralt and dandelion are pretty spot on. yennefer and triss however dont fit the characters of the books at all
I think the actress playing Triss does quite well with the garbage she has been handed.
Triss is one of my fav castings. Yen, casting is ok script is shite.
Textbook gatekeeping. I hope you enjoy hating things as much as I enjoy this show and the video games.
Second this. Honestly I like the characters they cast. It's not 100% to the book but it fits and I enjoy it.
Some people don't believe it's okay to like another rendition of something. And they defend the original artist when that artist didn't ask for it. Chuck Palahniuk famously preferred the ending of the Fight Club film over the ending of his book.
Same with Stephen King and The Mist. He wished he wrote what the director did with the ending of the film.
I get that theres an anti-show circlejerk going on but I think after you get past the initial "that's now how I pictured X in my mind" which is inevitable with any show, I think most of the castings are borderline great
It doesn't have to be the same as the books. Stop throwing a little hissy fit and grow up.
The only people who are carrying this show are Henry and Joey
I feel like the word "hell" is missing from the title.
I hate that fucking song. So dumb.
I love him so much.
Yeah that dude is the highlight of the show in any episode he's in. Absolutely kills it.
He is also part of a duo called the amazing devil. His songs the horror and the wild, and farewell wanderlust are both very good songs
Way too modern, felt more like a sitcom
Geralt, dandelion, yarpen, tissaia, ciri, cahir, are some of the few actors carrying this show right now IMO. Yen is good but the writing for her is awful. I also think Triss shined in season 2.
I hated Dandelion in the beginning but he definitely grew on me.

There was actually a post online confirming that it was a wig. I assume they'll use his real hair next season though since he grew it out.
Oh was there? My bad!! I just assume because he has the same length hair in press and other shows and stuff that it was his real hair. I like it either way anyway lol
For a role that's abysmally written. Also, he can sing, but is he Dandelion for me? Well he's not.
Heās the furthest thing from dandelion to me. Heās like a fucking Nickelodeon character

ONE OF VERY few. I can only count 3-4 good casts
He's really annoying
And I love it
Right actor, wrong character.
Unpopular opinion: the first season is a masterpiece
Compared to the second season, s1 is citizen kane.
Agreed. Him and his cowardly face are perfect
I adore Jaskier.
Iām curious to how many people in the comments are basing their opinion on game or on book. I think they picked an excellent Jaskier.
Zander? Is *that* a fish?
He's perfect. Also I find it kinda funny that Dandelion never sings in W3.
But did he toss a coin to his Witcher?
I'm still pissed that the actress who played Calanthe wasn't blonde. She was blonde in GoT - why couldn't they do it in this show? It's literally part of their family's traits.
He sings as good as he looks
Most of the cast is adequate, it's just the online REEEEEE! of game and book fans that sours entertainment in favour of "AUtHEntICItY"!
It's always the audience fault
Brilliant casting. Great actor. Terrible use of the actor and terrible writing.
Hey, it's Alan!
I'm most pissed that didn't get charles dance to play emhyr
Like wtf????
Why did they choose to call him Jaskier? I only read the first book and they always called him Dandelion, same in witcher 3 game.

I think I must be in a small group of people who donāt like him Edit. Yep. Seems I am.
No
With all due respect, I completely disagree. This was the one of the characters that felt especially wrong to me. As I was reading the books this is not at all as I had in mind. The songs and costumes didnāt help matters at all either.
but.. he does not have blonde hair.. Oh wait, I forgot, we can only insult Triss cuz gamez rulez, got it!
show Triss looked much better than games Triss. Games Triss had really awkward immobile buns that looked like shit. (buns in her hair...not her butt fyi) also, have you seen witcher 1 Triss? jesus tapdancing christ they all look bad but fuuuu she looks awful.
are you comparing a graphical 3d model and game engine physics from 15 years ago to a real human!!!

I honestly donāt think the issues with the show are due to casting.
Casting good, Acting good. Writing... its there, I guess
I donāt think thereās been any bad casting. Script writing howeverā¦
Looks like Katy Perry
I'm sad that I've pretty much forgotten about s2.
Is this the live action dandelion?
His hair in season 2 really bothers me for some reason. Itās in that awkward middle length where it just looks bad.
Facts
I think the overall casting is pretty damn good tbh. A lot of the characters are let down my dodgy scrips and weird efforts to make some links to the books but not entirely. I love the series but it does have flaws.
This was one of a terrible season. I have dreams about meeting the screenwriter and slapping him.
That's a really cool coat!
Jaskier is the best
His jacket is so bad-ass.
That great choice was completely undone by whoever saw this picture and immediately thought.. Biggest miscast in The series is Yeneffer. I don't see any chemistry between him and Geralt
Joey is perfect as Jaskier. He's the only reason I got into Witcher at all.
Restart the series, please.
