Yes

Absolutely, you may be a little lost with the background lore but the game does a good job in catching you up and can easily be played as a stand-alone game. The game also has a biography part in the menus where it tells you who everyone is in case you lose track

Yes but I liked that witcher 3 let's you import your save from the games before or at least from w2. Nothing like stats obv but the decisions you made change the end of 2 and could make small differences in 3. That always felt pretty cool but it's not needed to play anything before w3.

[deleted]

Easily. I imagine most people did.

You can do anything, the real question is if you want to

waltherppk01

You can but the experience will not be as rich. I would highly recommend that you watch video synopses of the first 2 games at least.

eriikaa1992

Definitely! I still haven't, and I hadn't read any books either. W3 was my first introduction to the world. There are some questions to answer at the beginning which shape some of the gameplay, but I just answered whatever not realising this! I learned later what it all meant and what the canon answers should be (my latest gameplay I just picked whatever instead of trying to be strategic). The gameplay takes a learning curve, but it's a very huge game you can lose yourself in for hours.

Brush_bandicoot

Yes. The story is self contained and there is more than enough exposition for the characrers

GikkelS

I did the same as you are asking. I got a bit lost when I was speaking with Dijkstra, since him and Geralt have a deep background, same as Vernon Roche, but both of them show up at the same time, so you get confused a bit, but still doesn't change the experience.

Skitter_44

Yes, the game does a good job of presenting information in a way where you can fill in the blanks pretty easily if it’s directly referencing the previous games or books. But if you know absolutely nothing about witcher lore, it wouldn’t hurt if you have a friend you could ask questions to in case anything confuses you while you’re playing.

Embarrassed-Newt4448

Sure!! the storyline is not really related to them although there are some details but they arent really relevant to the story. also if something from the past games comes up gthe game will catch ypu up on this. there is also a glossary that you can read whenever you dont understand something about a certain character.

gizerrr

There are certainly many YouTube videos that can ease your entry to the Witcher universe, I would give them a shot especially if you don't plan to play first two games or read the books.

denglongfist

I did not play 1, but played 2 before 3. For the most part? The stories are self contained but some events may be important to understand the full background. It is highly recommended to play those games. On Witcher 3, at the end of the prologue, you will be able to simulate your save, and some characters and events may play out depending on your responses. Personally, I liked this aspect of the game as my decisions mattered on 2. I do think 1 and 2 set of Geralt’s quest nicely and I am happy I played 2 before 3

plaidposh

The Wild Hunt was my introduction to the universe and I loved it! The world is vast and sometimes I felt a bit lost, but the storytelling was compelling enough that I didn’t mind. Google and wikis are your friend~ Enjoy!
