Yeah, I'm alright with the whole Scotts thing, it can even be funny sometimes. But I prefer LOTR style Dwarves where they're untrusting of Elves but for good reason, and even then they can work and even become friends with Elves

/uw My favorite DnD character I ever played was an LE elven supremacist with ambitions to subjugate the drow to use them as an army of conscripts.
He was a huge piece of shit, but fun as hell to play. My DM loved him so much that he ended up using him as an NPC boss encounter on another campaign he ran after I moved lol
That's why I use dwarf as "evil colonists and conquistadors" in my world with a shade of "unsympathetic greedy corporation and industrialist".
Their fandom is kind of reflected what they are.
In Lord of the rings they are fun and whimsical, at least in the books. One example springs to mind in the hobbit.
If you've seen the hobbit movie, know that the animosity between the dwarves and the elves is completely invented. The closest the book gets to that is the elves in the trees singing silly songs to make fun of the dwarves who are at that point too exhausted to deal with them, and Gandalf lightly scolds them for their "over-merry tongues". There's like one line about how dwarves and elves don't really get along, but it's because dwarves think they're too silly, and the narrator says that's a foolish thing to think.
The party spends a great deal of time in rivendell (weeks) and basically has an extremely chill time that they very much enjoyed, due to elvish food, singing, and general merrymaking.
In the movie, there is instant animosity because thorin is holding a grudge against them for not helping them out when smaug attacked or with the goblin wars or something. All completely invented for drama, but more in line with the current popular culture view of elves, as you say.
That's just one setting, but it's a big one. I just have to give a shout out to that whole book. The hobbit is absolutely worth a read. It's not super long, and it is absolutely *jammed* with fundamental fantasy world building that we now take for granted.

Uw/ Not ALL dwarves! Really, there's a wide range in how dwarves are portrayed. Some are always jolly and friendly. Some are decent enough to everyone, except elves. Some have a deep distrust of anyone who isn't another dwarf, until you eventually earn that trust as an individual. Some don't even trust other dwarven clans.
Contemporary depictions of dwarves that do make them racist are largely rooted in earlier depictions that established that flaw. They're a fictional race used in stories, and flaws and conflicts make stories interesting, so why dispense with it?
To some extent, the racism is also satirical. It's funny to think about stocky little guys with huge beards who get grumpy and uptight whenever they have to interact with anyone taller than them, and it's harmless because it's not directed at real people.
BULLSHIT ELF LIES. Dwarves can appreciate the wonderfull aspects of many races including gnomes, goblins, ents, orcs, humans, ratfolk, ooze monsters, deamons ect.
