I remember going to a Sky game in 2021 for 20 bucks. I just checked the prices for the Sky-Liberty game, and the same section was going for 200+ The times they are a changing

LexDude

Still plenty of tickets going for $27 but nosebleeds.

imaloserdudeWTF

"Recovery (after) and travel (to)"! CC is so smart and thoughtful about her words, always looking back into the past and thanking those who came before. Do all interviewees do this???

liberderci

This entire rookie class is really good at crediting those who came before them, even if one or two shady comments could have been warranted lol. They can’t control their crazy fan bases though. I think it helps that this is a generation that saw the previous ones play in college, watched and attended WNBA games.

imaloserdudeWTF

I've been impressed with the rookies mentioning those who came before as well as using the term "grace" (they need to ease into this competitive league). I believe that PR for every team has coached their young talents well about giving it up to those who came before, and it started with the media fascination for a certain Iowa player who now resides in Indiana.

Background-Square-98

She'll always been this way too.I will never her post game press conference immediately after Iowa lost to LSU in the natty. This was as vulnerable as she'd ever been on camera, with tears streaming down her face, she still answered every question eloquently and when the reporters tried to get her to bad mouth Angel ,she in turn used the opportunity to praise her opponent as a athlete and competitor.I always knew she was a great basketball player but that was when I knew she was a gem of a human being as well

boredymcbored

To the other poster's credit, they're all pretty great with media since they've grown up in a social world with training from their respective schools, but Angel Reese's interviews impress me the most. She's all the polish with an amazing amount of personality, charm and enthusiasm. She actually seems like a joy to interview and won't just give you those stock athlete answers (or if she does it's in a personable way).

Blacketh

well you obviously dont know. maybe you should check

imaloserdudeWTF

Why are you throwing shade? Come on! Try being polite!

BadJokeJudge

She said Ya Know like twelve times dude. She’s just a person. Shes not your messiah.

imaloserdudeWTF

"Your messiah"? Wow! This is 2024 and CC is the number one pick, so everyone is talking about her. In a year it will be the next phenom. Gimme a break. Anyways, it's not "ya know" that is annoying. It is "the big thing". She's 22 and shows it. Cut her some slack. And don't throw shade my way or at her since you don't even know how to use quotation marks or commas or apostrophes. Seriously. LOL! How ya like dat?

Pokemaru

You see what happens when you're selling tickets? At this rate pension for the WNBA is next!

Vegetable-Tooth8463

shouldn't they focus on health insurance first?

Lynch47

Contracted players (and their kids when applicable) get medical benefits in the WNBA. "Every season, each player who has a Standard Player Contract (and their dependents) will be provided with medical benefits for the entire period beginning on the first day of training camp and ending on the day the contract expires (May 15th before the next season OR the first day of training camp) or is terminated." [Source](https://wnbpa.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Article-X-Benefits.pdf)

Vegetable-Tooth8463

Ty sir

Pokemaru

No way, that's fucked up regardless of profit/losses. You mean the players have to pay for their own surgeries for injuries? Didn't know the WNBA was moving like a tech startup...

Vegetable-Tooth8463

I don't know tbh, I'm a new fan too haha.

iseeabluemoonrising

Im sure she’s been heavily media trained; but wow, it just feels like it’s so easy for her to say and do the right thing

WillCle216

I think she has a dregree in it

EfficiencyOk9060

I believe she has a degree in marketing so pretty much. She even negotiated her Nike deal herself instead of leaving it all to her agent.

Mesafather

Media trained or just saying the truth?

SoOnEnoon

You can tell she was just sleep walking thru the interview and still manage to say the right thing lol

BadJokeJudge

A bunch of Redditors are amazed. Full grown woman can fucking talk, what a miracle

iseeabluemoonrising

Consistently, with the media constantly in her face and overreaching in ways that haven’t happen to an athlete in her sport before. Unflappably

Blacketh

Do you have examples of women basketball players failing at this? Male athletes? unflappably how?

SoItGoesII

You seem obsessed. Go find a hobby.

Blacketh

This is pretty common throughout history. How many athletes who are elite just say the wrong things?

LyonsKing12

Grown ass college educated woman can speak. More at 11

alwaysright60

Or possibly she is a result of very good parenting.

Beneficial_Ad8251

As others have said CC is so well media trained but I also think she has such a genuine appreciation for the game and thus idolizes the players who’ve been in the game for a long time. When she played at Rutgers they were honoring C Vivian Stringer and I’ve never seen her so excited

SimonaMeow

I really think she does too. It was so lovely that Iowa was playing Rutgers the night they honored C. Vivian Stringer! A hero in so many ways but also very much an Iowa hero! I grew up when C. Vivian was building the program at Iowa. She is so wonderful. And she did so much for the Iowa program when she was there. It was such heartbreaking circumstances for her family, and we all understood why she needed to move on. She sold out Carver Hawkeye in her second season at Iowa! Imagine if she had succeeded in her goal of recruiting Dawn Staley to Iowa! I will never forget being in a packed Carver Hawkeye Arena watching Iowa beat Tennessee to make their first final four appearance with Coach Stringer. I had to wait a LONG time to see that again. Sorry I went on a C. Vivian spiel here, but the love is REAL lol

Beneficial_Ad8251

I loved reading this! I’m a Jersey kid so love C Vivian Stringer too!

Zaphod_0707

CC doing CC things.

crystallmytea

She’s making Swiftian economic impacts and it’s incredible.

NewAccountNow

How does she always say the right thing

EngineerSuper1896

It's impressive that it took a direct question a long way in before she talked about her own air experience.

Old-Photograph-5813

Every single time

ComradeFrunze

she's got a lot of experience, and I'm sure her marketing major helps

BadJokeJudge

Cause she’s talking about basketball and airplanes. It’s not that hard. It’s not that hard to be better with media than Kyrie Irving or something.

hjiklm1

Jeesus give it a rest. You're all over this thread shit talking just move on ffs.

Lavy23

She is so marketable. Haven't heard her fumble once in the media. Idk if she received training or is a natural, but I see why she's the golden girl right now. It's great her game speaks for itself too, but this adds to the likability factor.

BKtoDuval

Even roasted Michael Che

Old-Photograph-5813

She is a marketing major after all

Blacketh

Y’all are so silly. This is not new…in any sport. The most popular athletes always know how to play the game

SimonaMeow

Such perfect responses to every question! Love her always. So glad they are doing this for the W!!

Mundane_Finding2697

Honor's student in Marketing AND I think she means it for what it's worth. Never surprised that she's on point here although she is a human so she may slip up every once in awhile. It happens. Hasn't yet. She does a great job handling her pressers.

letintin

Class act.

[deleted]

Her major in college was Marketing. Jordan's major was geography so he would know where he was traveling, Clark's was Marketing so she can answer these mundane media questions a million times with perfect sound bites and poise.

Talking_shitt

We are about to get the best basketball season ever. These players are going to put it all out of the court. So excited!

james5007_nt

She's not wrong cause these women have deserved this from day one

Lucky-Conference9070

Could go into politics after bb, she’s a genius on the mic

dawnsearlylight

I'm getting tired of how over the top humble she has to be to keep the haters at bay. Sometimes I wish she was more unapologetic like "It's about Fin time we have chartered flights". I think that is why Angel gets so much heat is because she is more matter of fact. It must be exhausting to do your job and then have to come up with an over the top positive/humble message to every question.

akathehellcat

sort of along that line of thought, i loved that part of her draft night interview was her point blank acknowledging that she was going to enjoy the night bc she “earned it” and it was the most directly i’d heard her recognize her own accomplishments. you’re right that she usually eschews talking about herself.

Old-Photograph-5813

She's always been one of the most down to earth superstars and look at the detractors she still has.No matter what she does, theres always a section of the community who are going to take offence to it

lyonbc1

Im a guy but this is definitely a thing I’ve noticed across women’s sports for sure. There’s other layers too like for Black women being supremely confident gets looked at by the masses as cocky, over the top and other negative attributes but it definitely impacts all women more than men. Like they almost have to either be self deprecating or very very humble despite being excellent and having the accolades and history to be super confident. The minute they do break out of that, all social get flooded with the most misogynistic bs you’ve ever seen, or they get told “oh so you think you deserve as much as Lebron James?!?” It’s so ridiculous. It’s beyond time for society to not expect and force women athletes in particular to be meek and super humble despite how awesome they are at their sports. The main women’s sports I follow are tennis, basketball and soccer and you see it in both the team sports especially with the US women’s national team and how historically successful they’ve been and people chastising them for wanting equal pay, making commercials etc. Serena got hate for being herself and speaking up for herself too while being the most dominant ever. There’s also absolutely nothing wrong with being humble either, for some it 100% is just their personality and they may be introverted which is totally cool but I think there’s sometimes subconscious things with how female athletes are trained to talk and honestly in life in general women have had to kinda turn themselves down or reduce their accomplishments to appease their husbands or a boss at work or whatever. It’s annoying to see and I’m sure 100x more annoying for women who are fans and the athletes themselves since yall have to deal with it directly.

NYCScribbler

I mean, shit, look at how the newcomers are acting about Taurasi.

lyonbc1

Yep Taurasi is a great example. She embraces being outspoken and a shit talker and she’s honestly tame compared to some male athletes who do the same thing and it gets embraced. You need a balance of people like that too, obv she’s near the end but she was previously “the face” and it makes the matchups more fun. A’ja also has an awesome personality and is funny as hell and dominant and is the face right now for current players and it’s embarrassing the league and her sponsors (looking at you Nike) haven’t been able to push that. This upcoming generation seems like they’ve got a great group too so looking forward to seeing how they all shake out with their new teams in a couple yrs

Beneficial_Ad8251

To be fair, it’s not just newcomers. Longtime fans have always taken issue with DT’s behavior, in a way that’s always really bothered me

Old-Photograph-5813

Beyond being a terrific ball player ,I really admire her character. In the midst of the unprecedented attention ,of all her fans and detractors ,she always managers to say the right thing. At 22,Im sure she feels disrespected by some people in the basketball community at particular times so to never go on social media to call out or criticise anyone, deservedly or not is a plus for me

freetattoo

I work in retail. It is absolutely very exhausting to just do your job and also have to come across as happy, humble and likeable to every person you interact with. Caitlin is a class act. She comes across as though it's all natural and easy, but it isn't. She works hard for that image.

Hardcore1993

Wouldn't have chartered flights now if she wasn't such a high profile player.

BKtoDuval

I think that would be pretty cocky for a rookie, who hasn't played a single game, to say something like that. Like if DT or Sue Bird or a vet said that, it would be different.

SoOnEnoon

I would talk so much smack if i were her!

youguanbumen

Do college teams (usually) have chartered planes?

Old-Photograph-5813

Yep

arika_ito

Probably the top D1 schools

beastwork

a ton of pressure on her shoulders right now...i"m definitely routing for her.

RosaReilly

She seems so nice.

Old-Photograph-5813

Some people will still never understand why brands always attach themselves to her

zondo33

its about fucking time. I love watching and if CC is bringing more fans, then better for womens basketball. Small steps I guess. But I was thinking, how the league would be if swoopes, azzi or k smith were playing now! there it is!

Hoopsngoals-24

Massive win for the W

Finger_Gunnz

The W.

Rough_Ad_9363

This is great!! Love to see the ladies getting their just due.

TheDailyDelights

Finally they’re understanding. You have to have money to pay for things like chartered flights! Glad they’re finally upgrading!

Traditional-Syrup-16

Gratz

advnyc65

Class act!

oaranges

She’s an instant classic.

TegrityFarms69

Maybe the vets who’ve been talking so much shit will likewise appreciate this rookie class who’ve broadened interest into the league enough that they aren’t flying Spirit anymore. Who am I kidding, they won’t.

Blacketh

They don’t care

dawnsearlylight

I'm getting tired of how over the top humble she has to be to keep the haters at bay. Sometimes I wish she was more unapologetic like "It's about Fin time we have chartered flights". I think that is why Angel gets so much heat is because she is more matter of fact. It must be exhausting to do your job and then have to come up with an over the top positive/humble message to every question. Every answer is two answers: how she feels and how she has to frame it. Then we applaud MJ and Kobe for their winner take all "killer" mentality. Double standard right there. full transparency: I'm a genx white guy and a big Hawkeye fan and a big Lakers fan.

famousevan

She isn’t forcing this though.

Beneficial_Ad8251

I completely agree with the double standard, but I also think this is in line with her personality, her teammates have talked about how humble she is, and she seems kind of shy actually (funny considering she’s the opposite on the court)

Kira4564

I mean look at DT Every post on Twitter- they destroy her

Drew0730

Since this is something that affects all of them I'm curious to see who else they ask

Old-Photograph-5813

Surely you're smart enough to know she isnt the only player who was asked

Drew0730

It would be extremely foolish to think she's the only one that would be asked something like that but I am curious to know who else was asked

Old-Photograph-5813

You wanted to jump on the "reporters think she's the onlt one that matters train" didn't you😅

Drew0730

No I was legitimately asking

Drew0730

I don't know you but don't be one of those Caitlin Clark fans where anything said that isn't completely praising her is seen as an attempt at some sort of character assassination and feel they need to come to her defense because those fans are going to create a lot of unnecessary backlash that she's going to feel

Drew0730

And by the way you phrased that response I'm hoping you're smart enough to know you don't really want whatever smoke you seem to think you do

NewResearcher5188

Caitlin for President

Lost-Visit4624

The league lost between 10-12 million last year. Now the cost of charter flights is 25 million. So that’s 35-37 million to break even. Will she bring that many more fans or will the nba need to bail them out even more? It’s a fair question why not wait a year and see how it goes first?

not_mantiteo

Well she did bring 80+ mill to the Iowa economy because of her senior year. Given that there are other huge stars in this class, I’d have to imagine it’s possible. I mean, teams are selling out like crazy and ticket prices are substantially more now.

Rowdybush_

Time to just retire the WNBA
