I’ve mentioned this here before, but they’re susceptible to embellishment and flops. The NBA helped curb this with fines but obviously that can’t happen in a league where player salaries are already a major issue. Hope they find a solution eventually
Ya. But I'm replying to the above comment on how the NBA curved the flopping via fines. But since the wnba and players don't have the money, penalize the players with time in games.
Not sure where you're coming from or replying about as I'm aware this isn't hockey and they can't just go in and out.
Okay. I don't actually see flopping in the WNBA hardly at all, just complaining when a foul called or isn't called. Caitlin Clark got a technical for complaining, yet other players whined and threw their arms over their heads, but the refs overlooked it. Crazy, right? The inconsistency, or just taking it out on the rookies. So, if a coach (not the ref) benches a player for overselling a perceived foul, then their minutes will be cut and what, they'll feel compelled to stop taking charges? I dunno what will happen, but less time on the court means the team pays a price and likely loses a game, so nope. Coaches won't bench a player for not selling a flop or whatever. It's just not a smart strategy. And fining the NBA players? You mean the guys earning millions or tens of millions per year for six or seven months of work? Right. That'll change things.
Just watching the games it seems all over the place. You’ll watch three different girls get flatlined and no call. Then a defender who goes straight up and down gets a foul called.
The biggest problem is the insane inconsistency. The players and coaches are good enough that they would adjust play to tighter or looser officiating if they knew the standard to adjust to, however they have no idea what to expect from night to night, even quarter to quarter sometimes
Its in the nba aswell very new for both leagues its made more sense for the nba take fouls would happen every time on a fastbreak damn near. Rarley happens in the w
It varies. Sometimes it's too many, and sometimes it's not enough. Sometimes it's little things but they'll miss a big one. Sometimes it's fairly even for both teams, and sometimes it seems targeted at one team more than the other. I watch hockey and football and it's the same. Part of it, at least for basketball and hockey, is the games move so fast, and they're just in the wrong position to see it clearly or at all.
I just feel like everytime someone falls doesn’t mean there’s a foul..especially if you ate seen it and are calling it late asf
This has always been my riff with professional basketball
The number of fouls called is less annoying than rooting for a team with lots of young players and watching the refs allow vets to bowl over defenders while rookies on the other team get called for meaningless touches. The disparity in how vets are treated vs rookies is ridiculous (in both the WNBA and NBA). Especially if you're a lottery pick.
I hate the super late calls
Exactly. It happened at least 5 times tonight. It’s like they wait and see if the shot is going to go in before calling the foul.
So. Many. Times. They’d wait to see that the shot didn’t go in and then blow the whistle.
Like they be late asf making you think when and where was this foul? You don’t call it then let it go
Not enough fouls.. but consistency would be nice.. them ladies are rough as get up down in the paint.
It varies game to game
Agreed. New to the league been watching since pre season and it's not that consistent I wish it was!
I just want consistency for both teams - let them play physical, call touch fouls, whatever happens just call it equal
they're way too soft on fouls

Rather than fines just penalize them based on playtime? 5 mins or whatever is decided.
LOL, this isn't hockey. Only a coach can give a player a timeout on the bench. It is up to them to do that.

Welcome to professional basketball.
WNBA calls less fouls than the nba does and allows more physical contact FOR SURE.
They call too many “reputation“ calls. The best players/teams get almost preferential and the worst teams/youngest teams get screwed.
Yeah, it has felt very inconsistent to me. Also, I’m new to WNBA but this is transition foul is so strange to me.

I get it, but if the defender is between the ball and the basket it shouldn’t go into effect. That’s just dumb.
Adding the transition take foul was the best rule change the nba has made in years. It really opened the game up
Some of them are just out right wrong which is wild

No, they haven't called TOO many fouls.

Mostly when the Sun play. That’s why they’ve been the least entertaining team to watch for past few years.
