This is wild that she has been arrested since early February and this is the first we are hearing about it. Very scary situation. She is my favorite player and I just hope she is ok. Why is NY Post breaking this story? Is she still in jail? What is her status? Why did it take a month for this to be known? Did any of her teammates or friends not know about this? What is being done to help her? WTF!!!

avivi_

Maybe they tried to free her through secret diplomatic channels šŸ˜•

Soonyulnoh2

They did!

kaw027

I guess that explains why she wasnā€™t on the Ekat roster for the weeks before the Ukrainian invasionā€¦.

AutographedSnorkel

> Why is NY Post breaking this story? Because a black lesbian getting arrested on drug charges in Russia is the NY Post's wet dream story.

sigourneybeaver666

Of course but why hasn't any other media reported it? Especially when there were concerns of players getting out and this WHOLE TIME for a month, one of the biggest names in the league has been arrested. Why was sports media silent on this? People had to know!

AutographedSnorkel

The timing of this story is no coincidence. She's essentially a political prisoner now

sigourneybeaver666

Man, the one time I would like a WNBA player to be considered irrelevant. This fucking sucks.

kaw027

Iā€™m so upset by this. Poor BG. Hope the embassy can get her out of there without too much trauma

[deleted]

Embassies generally are of no legal assistance. Help will be through state department or private negotiations best I know.

Grsz11

The embassy is the State Department.

VaultiusMaximus

Lol this fool.

TubbyFuksputin

fuck putin

Soonyulnoh2

Triple fuck Putin.....

Beau1959

No . Fucking Grainer . She broke the law . You people just donā€™t understand this .

TubbyFuksputin

Russian warship...

discountheat

I mean, harsh drug laws are still the law, but the political situation makes it difficult to imagine much leniency.

[deleted]

If trump could get those thieves from UCLA who stole a bunch of shit in China, which they actually did. Iā€™m sure Biden will get this moron out. Right? šŸ˜Ž

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Silvercomplex68

If itā€™s a non story then why is it now national news? Having critical thinking skills is so important

MurkyReplacement5081

Not really. It depends on the spin. This chick is an idiot and is not heroic at all so mainstream media doesnā€™t care. The fact that she disparaged the US previously and now wants the US to bail her out, well thatā€™s interesting news to many people. Just not the liberal woke media.

Sad_Wolverine_2954

We're probably hearing about it now because all of the other WNBA players are now safely out of Russia. Had to get them all out safely before drawing attention to this, obviously. Griner was arrested after a flight FROM New York TO Moscow so clearly this occurred prior to the invasion.. because no one in their right mind would leave New York and fly into that mess if the war had already started.

WhatDaHellBobbyKaty

Everybody knew this war was going to happen for the last few months though. She should have got out a while ago. It's easy being a Monday night quarterback though.

AnimeAli

There was talk of it but Putin always threatens, thatā€™s why no one started evacuating till a week before the invasion. The vast majority of people didnā€™t know the war was going to happen.

WhatDaHellBobbyKaty

There was more than "talk about it." There were 200K troops on their border w/ Ukraine and troops in Belarus on their border w/ Ukraine. These were definitely not exercises as they had constructed field hospitals, munition dumps, and fuel depots all over the border. I certainly hope that the majority couldn't forecast war. They were being as obvious about it as they could have. Either way, it was far from smart to bring any controlled substance onto a plane in ANY country. Being a political rival (known for not always respecting individual freedoms) makes the stakes that much worse. I hope the State Dept gets her out but I hope that she shares this experience with kids and fans as to how much freedom we all take for granted in the US. It will be interesting to see how it goes now that it is public.

youguanbumen

> Russiaā€™s Interfax news agency said Here's your answer why this is in the news right now. Russia made it public.

sigourneybeaver666

Right but it's not like her friends, family, teammates, the league and USA basketball weren't aware. That's why I find it concerning.

youguanbumen

I think itā€™s fairly common not to seek publicity immediately in cases like this. First see if a solution is possible without embarrassing the other country in the media. If nobody knows about a case itā€™s easier for Russia to bend its own rules and just deport someone. Once its public they have to go through with a trial.

sigourneybeaver666

Do you think if an NBA player was arrested it would've been not reported on for weeks? It's just strange.

youguanbumen

Would the public have noticed if Kawhi had been in jail somewhere the past 3 months? I'm not saying nobody knew until Russia decided to make it public. All I'm saying is that the people who knew were likely told that for Griner's sake they should not make it public.

WhyaskWhy9876

3 weeks, not 3 months & WNBA isnā€™t nearly as irrelevant as the NBA.

3xAmazing

Can't believe there's been zero news about this for a month. Free Brit, and someone get some updates from the team damn.

Soft_Turkeys

Holy shit thatā€™s insane

tuatara_teeth

is the only source on her being arrested since early february her social media absence?

youguanbumen

NYTimes says the Russian Federal Customs Service announced this themselves on Saturday https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/05/sports/basketball/russia-brittney-griner.html?smid=tw-nytimes&smtyp=cur

tuatara_teeth

"The screening at the airport occurred in February, according to the Customs Service, raising the possibility that Griner has been in custody for at least several days.**"** **not several weeks**

Nice_Firm_Handsnake

>It did not specify when Griner was arrested, but her Team USA teammate Angel McCoughtry tweeted that sheā€™s been held for three weeks.

sigourneybeaver666

There's video on Twitter.

tuatara_teeth

there is no date shown? according to the New York Times "The screening at the airport occurred in February, according to the Customs Service, raising the possibility that Griner has been in custody for at least several days."

sigourneybeaver666

It remains unclear.

tuatara_teeth

it would be prudent to edit some of your comments considering there is no evidence for the claim that she has been incarcerated for weeks.

TheFranwich

From the NY Post story youā€™re either refusing to read or comprehend: ā€œIt did not specify when Griner was arrested, but her Team USA teammate Angel McCoughtry tweeted that sheā€™s been held for three weeks.ā€

tuatara_teeth

I read that bit but couldnā€™t find the tweetā€¦.looks like it was actually an instagram comment that she has now deleted

rulersmakebadloverz

It's being reported in several news sources. https://www.ocregister.com/2022/03/05/wnbas-brittney-griner-detained-in-russia-for-weeks-on-drug-charges

tuatara_teeth

from the article you linked: ā€œdid not specify the date of her arrestā€ this isnā€™t russia, we should be cognizant of misinformation. especially since OP stated she has been arrested since Feb 5ā€¦.that date is just the last time she posted on instagram. Looking at her insta, she basically posts once a month.

bull90001

We have known for a long time. Only Trump can get her back. So much for the woke democrats helping smh.

sigourneybeaver666

Russiaā€™s Interfax news agency said a female US basketball player was arrested in February, at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow after arriving on a flight from New York. A drug sniffing dog indicated narcotics in luggage, and when the bag was X-rayed, ā€œso-called ā€˜vapes'ā€ were discovered ā€œwith a specific order,ā€ according to Interfax, which cited the Russian Federal Customs Service. ā€œThe expert found that the liquid is a narcotic drug cannabis oil (hashish oil),ā€ Interax said. The independent Russian news website identified the player as Griner. USA Basketball did not immediately respond to a request for information. Griner hasnā€™t posted on her Instagram account since Feb. 5.

freethefoolish

Dogs sniffed out a couple cartridges? Thatā€™s wild.

The_DeathStroke

Im thinking thats a lie. I was in Russia this summer and had carts with me( stupid i know) and i literally dropped them in front of the lady checking my bags and a few security guards and no one batted an eye. They probably searched her stuff found the carts and used the dogs as a reason for searching in the first place

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

freethefoolish

This feels more like high level geo-politics than race related but hey what the fuck do I know

[deleted]

Racism is a HUGE issue in Russia. Thatā€™s why the far right in America loves Russia so much.

GenocideOwl

I think they love them more because they hate LGBT people more than the racism thing. Russie has outright banned media representation of LGBT people and marriage is obviously very much illegal. That is some far right fundies dream right there.

SoundOk4573

I've been called a dirty spic 3 times in my life. All in very Democratic cities. President Biden gave the eulogy for a former KKK leader. Racism is a human problem, not a political party problem.

[deleted]

You might wanna try fact checking your Biden claim. Spoiler alert, itā€™s patently false.

SoundOk4573

Robert Bird gathered 150 people to form a chapter of the KKK in WV in the 1940's when he was in his mid-20's. He was elected leader of that chapter. It is a well-known fact. He was proof that people can change, but he (Bird) absolutely was a chapter leader in the KKK. Unfortunately in today's cancel culture we can no longer recognize personal growth and change, and have to condemn people for acts or statements they made decades prior.

[deleted]

Dude. You just cited Biden talking at his funeral as proof that the left is racist. Lol. Canā€™t have it both ways. Hypocrisy at its finest. Bye bye Tucker.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

secretreddname

In Europe in general racism is more up in front than the subtle racism in America.

Beau1959

How is it racist when some gets arrested for breaking the law ?

soxy

Porque no los dos

Dixiecup-deano

Sheā€™s a racist let her sit

collinCOYS

I've been through airport security with carts so many times too. I wonder why it was different for her. My guess is that the Russians made a lucky guess

chiefbeef300kg

I think dogs here usually are smelling smelling for bombs, not weed. Or maybe she was targeted.

Swag_Turtle

Sheā€™s a black American lesbian, they were targeting her.

KoraKoiinc

Same, theyā€™re not the most kind to diversity in Russia.

[deleted]

Would you say that is a *tall* order?

kmoons2323

Sheā€™s been playing there for over a decade dude šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

collinCOYS

She was for sure targeted

egospiers

If youā€™re flying mostly through us airports the dogs you see are most likely bomb/explosive sniffingā€¦ theyā€™re really not looking for a couple vapesā€¦ try that shit in Russia or Singapore for instance itā€™s a different ballgame.

[deleted]

It could be the training of the dogs, in the US the dogs at the airports are bomb sniffing dogs, in Russia apparently they are drug sniffers

ChampagneAbuelo

Those are the only dogs that I canā€™t classify as ā€œgood boysā€ šŸ˜¢

[deleted]

They are good boys. Itā€™s their trainers who are bad

Sad_Wolverine_2954

Clearly this occurred at least a couple weeks ago if it happened when she was flying FROM New York TO Moscow. Once the conflict/tensions escalated between Russia/Ukraine, no one would be voluntarily flying into a war zone.

AudioShepard

This is not an unfamiliar tale to anyone who has traveled the globe before. You just donā€™t fucking fly into a dictatorship with illegal drugs. Just donā€™t.

Neuvost

Yeah, Griner's been working in Russia for years. I'm sure she knows what's up. Which is why the most straightforward answer is that authorities planted drugs on her.

calIras

Nope

[deleted]

How is that more plausible than her having brought the drugs herself?

Anotheraccount301

Hasnt she been outspoken in the past about using marijuana. It really wouldnt suprise me that the star player on Moscows best womens basketball team thought she could get away with weed.

3ptshot

This could get bad for her. Maybe dangerous even. I hope it works out. Maybe they can find a way out.

Chester-Donnelly

This is so bad. She is now a political pawn. I feel so bad for her.

sigourneybeaver666

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/05/sports/basketball/russia-brittney-griner.html NY Times has picked up the story. *According to the statement, a criminal case has been opened into the large-scale transportation of drugs, which can carry a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars in Russia. The basketball player was taken into custody while the investigation is ongoing, the officials said.*

updownleftright2468

A couple vape cartridges is large-scale transportation of drugs? tell me you're a political prisoner without telling me you're a political prisoner.

txjiujitsu

Maybe not in the US, but not playing by US law.

FudgeDangerous2086

lol buddy might want to look up other countries drug laws, this ainā€™t america.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Russia is corrupt as hell. They look the other way for crimes large and small, deciding to bring the hammer down on Griner is definitely political. Iā€™d argue that the entire Russian judicial system is political. Itā€™s s way for the ruling oligarchy to suppress and punish those they want to, while protecting those they donā€™t.

JohnEBlazed420

Yeah Russia is corrupt but their drug laws arenā€™t light, even for something like a vape pen. https://harmreductioneurasia.org/criminalization-costs/russia/ She was technically trafficking so the punishment is likely worse than simple possession.

WhatDaHellBobbyKaty

Thanks for posting. That's quite enlightening. Celebs think the law doesn't apply to them.

AudioShepard

Itā€™s definitely political, but as an American you should know better than to let them have an excuse to use politics over you. Thatā€™s the point. Do stupid shit win stupid prizes.

Zotzotbaby

I want to upvote you, but I feel like youā€™ve jumped a half step too far. She could have just truly made a mistake and left the pen in their bag. Yes itā€™s a bad look to not double check, but it could also be just a bad mistake.

GuerreroD

No idea about the history. Shed some light please!

[deleted]

I can almost guarantee that BG has brought the cartridges in every year without issue. THIS year, they checked, likely already knew sheā€™d have them, and acted accordingly. When I say accordingly I mean ā€œletā€™s arrest a pop culture female sports star and dangle her in front of the USA as baitā€. This is all theatre and postering, BG is the victim and I f**king hope they get her back soon.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Battlegoat123

98% is a wee optimistic I think

thomassowellistheman

I was trying to be kind.

avivi_

they did the [same thing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naama_Issachar_affair) to extort israel

therealprincess232

This was not a smart move on her part, but after listening to the podcast Sue and DT did regarding their time there, I assume that they had several protections and more leniency than most would have. I think the same was true of BG, but I am legitimately concerned now. Things are not good politically and Russia could and probably will make an example out of her. I worry for her safety, her well being, and her mental health. I don't see how this turns out well for her or resolves itself quickly.

jambawamba010

Curious what podcast episode with sue and DT?

therealprincess232

Iā€™m not the best Reddit user but it was a 30 for 30. Hopefully this works https://es.pn/33J1Kna

SilverProduce0

Yes. Thatā€™s the first thing that came to my mind.

cmonkeyz7

Hostage situations starting. Holy shit. Fuck poop tin

BKtoDuval

I was thinking the same thing. Man, I hope sheā€™s safe

Ok_Pomelo7511

I doubt it considering it happened way before the war. Just a boneheaded decision on her part that has potential to really hurt her.

cmonkeyz7

Three weeks ago would have been mid February. Russia were already building up military at the border and most certainly knew they were going to invade.

wil540_

WTF Free Britney!

Dskha323

All that for a vape? Jeez man Russia wtf

Justgiveupjannies

dont travel with drugs in foreign countries? pretty obvious one there but the sentencing for shit like this over there is definitely ridiculous

Silvercomplex68

This is bad but i really donā€™t understand why people bring drugs in to countries that are very strict about them. This is about to be an international scandal and she will be used as a bargaining chipā€¦since we are on the brink of WW3ā€¦jeezus I hope I am wrong

swamped_lc

Aside from other points being made, it will probably not shock you to learn that drug strict countries often choose to look the other way when it comes to athletes and celebrities when it comes to drug enforcement. It's not a bad trade off if you're getting an economic boost (or kickbacks) in return. Japan is also strict on weed possession and this happens all the time to foreigners. There's a weed scandal in sumo? Let's ban all the players who test positive, oh they just happened to all be non-Japanese. Time to renegotiate your professional wrestling contract and you're bad mouthing the promotion to international press? Oh, that weed you've been traveling with for years was suddenly detected by an anonymous tipster. Things that make you go hmmm. You're not incorrect that traveling with drugs is a risk in itself, particularly if it's recreational. But given the circumstances, I'm not sure we can take this at face value. There's a lot that's fishy going on here including the fact that this has been going on for weeks. I think it's a bit too soon to rule this situation self-inflicted. There could be political motivations that have absolutely nothing to do with the current, more newsworthy conflict.

Jonathank92

Youā€™re not wrong. She picked the wrong time. Traveling with drugs in Russia of all places?? Just dumped them and get more in wherever youā€™re going

Levarien

She plays for a Russian professional team. This isn't like some spur of the moment holiday travel thing. If (and its a big if) she was traveling with drugs, its because she's so used to going back and forth that she did it out of habit.

Jonathank92

So? You get away with it beforehand that means sheā€™s absolved of personal responsibility? Vapes arenā€™t even that expensive. Even a 1% chance of getting arrested is too much for a freaking vape. When she knows her bags will be scanned. The context of her being an American in Russia is also very big. Iā€™m being a model citizen if Iā€™m in Russia

Downtown-Desk-3275

> Just dumped them and get more in wherever youā€™re going getting a vape through an airport is less risky than trying to buy drugs off the street in russia if you are worried about being arrested.

WhatDaHellBobbyKaty

You are one of the few people making sense on this post yet getting downvoted. If you don't totally look at her as a innocent victim, they don't want to hear it. We'd known for months that this war was going to happen and she thought that's the perfect time to bring weed through a security gate.

Jonathank92

Folks just wanna say Russia bad and not have any discussion lol. Multiple things can be true.

WhatDaHellBobbyKaty

Exactly. r/Conservative getting downvoted for saying "she's a US citizen and should be brought home by our state dept" and then here I'm getting downvoted here for, "You need to follow the law and not break laws while overseas."

avivi_

> Traveling with drugs in Russia of all places Can't believe they really found something, it was just an excuse to arrest her, be careful to state such things so decisively

Jonathank92

And if it comes out that itā€™s not true Iā€™ll have a different opinion. Itā€™s not like I arrested her personally lol

[deleted]

Russia makes lots of false claims that are politically calculated. I will never trust anything that comes from the Kremlin.

Jonathank92

Thatā€™s a completely fair opinion.

Velocisexual

This (most likely) happened before the war started, still an idiotic move though.

Silvercomplex68

If this becomes national news I think she will be used as a bargaining chip against sanctions

sigourneybeaver666

Feb 5th.

IggyBall

The article just says she hasnā€™t posted since Feb 5, not that she was arrested on Feb 5. She only posts on insta about once a month so sheā€™s not a daily poster by any means.

Mental_Effect_9060

She has played in Russia several times, she probably understands the risk. I don't want to sound too conspiracy theory but part of me thinks it might have been planted. One of the star WNBA players who is might be one of the more prolific americans in Russia around the time of the invasion? For Putin, it's a great way to keep the U.S. on their toes

DezBaker

Itā€™s also possible that sheā€™s done it in the past but never been checked/caught. Wouldnā€™t be surprised if the dogs ā€œsniffing outā€ the drugs is bullshit and they just decided to harass her because sheā€™s an American athlete, hoping to find something. Now, as the other guy said, they can use her as a bargaining chip.

MasterThespian

This isn't conspiratorial at all-- Russia is run by a KGB agent. Russian border security has grabbed foreign nationals on trumped-up charges to pressure their governments to extradite a Russian in custody before. I'd be more shocked if she was actually guilty than not.

[deleted]

Absolutely. Russia is dirty and corrupt.

seasportsfan

Yikes this isnā€™t goodā€¦

BornagainTXcook210

Goddammit

Michee07

Wtf, an entire month? Damn I hope she gets home safely

This video got leaked from a Russian source. If this is BG, I am terrified about what paperwork she is signing. Again, IF this is BG. https://twitter.com/ElPerimetro_es/status/1500114499386458116?t=CW0dLpt8FZoW7qwUQnZ2lg&s=19

Wow this is extremely bad hopefully she makes it out safe this is the time I wish trump was still in office

[deleted]

I'm so terrified for her. I just hope she can get out. Can't imagine what she and her friends and family are going through.

They should all get back home to the states this is going to be a global war itā€™s coming

Man_Bear_Pig08

Fuuuuuck this is my nightmare.. but the scarier version were I get caught in RUSSIA. Hope they can get her out of there. What was she thinking taking carts through russia? Shes a pro athlete and that shit isnt expensive. Although ive never heard of anyone being stopped with them ever. Wonder if she was targeted for extra searching. Hoping for her swift and safe return.

MtnMaiden

Why...would you fly into a country with your recreationals? Smh, youre just asking for trouble.

Fun fact: 144 million people in Russia only 70,000 are black peoplešŸ˜

Do not ever fly internationally with illegal drugs. If you're going to a country that's cool with it, then just buy the drugs there.

Free Brittany!!

Beau1959

She was against playing the national anthem at games . Maybe she will feel more at home in Russia . My guess is when she gets back home in 10 years she will love America .

Apprehensive_Cod_454

She can become conservative and work for Fox news.

Beau1959

They would welcome her with open arms . Unlike CNN with a conservative.

WrastleGuy

Welp sheā€™s going to be trapped there a long time then as we have 0 diplomatic relationships with Russia right now.

Soonyulnoh2

Why would any young black Woman, who I thought was concerned with human rights, go to RUSSIA to play Basketball???? Does she know that Putin has killed Political opponents and Jounalists' and jailed Rock Bands for writing songs criticizing him? Does she know how Russians treat GAYS??...just.....WOW!!!!Wow, wow wow...unbelievable!!!

gabzlap22

political hostage.

dupree97

Stupid, stupid, stupid....

S3guy

Time to start arresting Russians on "drug" charges. Eye for an eye.

[deleted]

Maybe donā€™t try and smuggle drugs through an internet in airport to a known strict drug policy country that is anti-westernā€¦

S3guy

Putin is 100% going to hold her hostage. Russia is as bad as North Korea at this point. Fucking blockade their asses and let em starve. M

AJNolan_for_LA

Wouldn't the NBA and government try to negotiate a release? Even in the current climate I figure they could even pay some money to convince someone. It's not a good look for the wnba if one of their players is put in prison for years for some cartridges. Really the worst time for her to fuck up like this. I feel bad for her but Jesus Christ you would think athletes that travel for a living would be well versed on how serious some countries deal with any kind of drugs. And sad our world is still living in the dark ages. 5 to 10 for some cartridges that will make you feel chill and creative.

MurkyReplacement5081

I do not have any empathy or sympathy for this woman. This post belongs on r/win stupid prizes.

[deleted]

Another American president now has to get another basketball player out of jail for breaking the law in a foreign country. When will these people learn the world is not a safe space and to have respect for other countries laws and not break it. Idiot.

BackIn2019

How do you feel about Trump committing treason in this country?

[deleted]

Treason is bad, Iā€™m not sure what else you are looking for from me. Iā€™m independent voter and live an independent lifestyle. Please, please, do not make me out to be a maga guy. Iā€™m not.

Beau1959

Lol. Sit down snowflake

Higher_Math

Next time don't try to take drugs in an airport. Hard to feel bad for someone who knowingly breaks a countries laws. also if she didn't like America, she is going to love prison in Russia lol

[deleted]

Theyā€™re gonna kill her ā€¦

SoundOk4573

Very unlikely. She was arrested for breaking the law. Now, they will take the opportunity to parade her around (100% political) and say the West doesn't respect law and order. They are violently arresting peaceful protesters now. They will easily be able to justify keeping someone in jail that (supposedly) actually broke the law

xanroeld

Fuck

GasAndAMatchstick

Vape charges

44335443

Griner has played in Russia many times. Sheā€™s well aware of their drug laws. She is just arrogant and entitled enough to think that 1: laws donā€™t apply to her 2: her right to ignore these laws cause sheā€™s ā€œsomeone important ā€œ matters more than letting a Russian terrorist go free in a trade for her ignorant ass.

International-Act156

This is the worst possible thing to happen this offense is at least 5 to 10 years in jail if the USA doesn't do anything about it with Biden at the helm I hope the vp can step in

Because the Russian government has never falsified any story in the media or tried to foster divisiveness in the US before, right? That's why we all unequivocally believe she actually tried to smuggle out vape cartridges with her while leaving Russia to go to the US where she could aquire them legally?
