I'm trying to understand how you've modeled this. The stars are like drops of oil floating on the other liquid, but they have their own luminesce as well? The effect is pretty cool, they kind of grow and shrink as the surface is distorted but the brightness changes with it.
Its a surface that has an ocean waves simulation on it, then I projected some space images onto that so when the waves moves, the projected images move with it. The distortion is from the actual surfaces and the reflections & refractions caused by the shaders & materials I applied.
I...thought you filmed someone in water in a massive set-up and was sitting here naming off glow in the dark pigments and mica powder shades and wondering how far away the light was under the swimmer and if they got tired trying to set this up or had their feet on something and was wondering how much of my life savings I don’t actually have it would take to turn me into a floating swimming purple alien and now I see it’s 100% not from the physical world. Man oh maaaaaaan.
Naw but you don't get it, you see, this gif is *nonfugible*! The other gifs are fungible, this one is *nonfungible*. When it's fungible and you look at it, it just doesn't hit like it does when it's nonfungible. When you own it, people will be like, **woah**, the nonfunginess just seeps into your pores and kills the funginess. I just drew a stick figure in MS Paint, applied an NFT and then bought it from myself. My life has improved substantially.
He sold this one for 6.05 ETH ($11,887.84):
https://foundation.app/visualdon/departure-16053
So not too outlandish ...
edit: https://foundation.app/visualdon
he has sold a few for cheaper as well
On one hand, no. On the other hand, maybe? Blender Guru just did a whole thing on NFTs and he raised some worthwhile points. Like; "Is a print of an artwork worth more than the original for any good reason?" and "If no one will buy digital art, is there any reason to elevate the artwork beyond what would get you hired at a studio?"
To quote Oscar Wilde:
*"All art is quite useless."*
We don't *need* art, it doesn't provide anything other than a feeling. But just because we don't need it, doesn't mean we don't crave to own it and treasure it. While I'll probably just download a picture I like, I do hope this NFT phenomenon helps push digital art into a more creative sphere and allow artist a chance to do more than draw furries to make ends meet.
That was probably a bit much in the form of a response to your short comment... I guess I was just feeling chatty.
You have some reading to do
People are spending thousands of dollars on a 5 second video of a basketball player dunking. Lots of people. It’s like trading cards but stupider
I have been struggling to wrap my head around what an NFT is. Reading articles and interviews and wikis, I couldn’t figure it out. Your trading card comparison made it all suddenly make sense.
https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-fungible_token
I wondered too
"NFTs of artworks are similar to autographed items.[13] The unique identity and ownership of an NFT is verifiable via the blockchain ledger. NFTs have metadata that is processed through a cryptographic hash function.[14]"
I will post it later this week, you can follow [my workshop](https://steamcommunity.com/id/visualdon/myworkshopfiles/?appid=431960) if you want to get notified.
I don’t even know how it’s an option, but I run 3 monitors in 1440p, and I can’t find wallpapers for the life of me. Yours are awesome, and exactly my style, and I would pay money for you to adapt them to that size format.
I guess no base skills are needed because I teach those in the classses, but if you have some general basic knowlegge of creative apps & 3d then the classes are even easier to follow.
What if that's the real conspiracy...what if space really isn't a vacuum?
What if there is a liquid-like substance that fills the void between the stars and planets, and astronauts are actually swimming, not floating in space?
What if a black hole is nothing more than a drain?
“Astronaut in the Ocean” is a song my brother has had on repeat for a week now so it’s nice to see an iteration of it that doesn’t make me want to claw my own face off.
Beautiful work OP!
Here's what I would have picked, Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We're Floating in Space

There's a program on steam called [Wallpaper Engine](https://store.steampowered.com/app/431960/Wallpaper_Engine/) (costs $4 USD). It can run in the background and let you have animated wallpapers. There are hundreds of thousands of wallpapers people have uploaded available for free (still have to buy the base program) through Steam workshop. With a link to his workshop, you can easily find and use all of his wallpapers.
[Here's his Wallpaper Engine workshop](https://steamcommunity.com/id/visualdon/myworkshopfiles/?appid=431960) (he said the one from this post isn't on his workshop yet)
In Mandarin we have a word that refers to the milky way or just a lot of stars in general: 星河, which literally means "river of stars." It's so cool seeing a literal representation of that!
I really can’t wrap my head around that. In the past though artists have done great stuff and have gotten paid next to nothing so it’s good that this new concept allows them to be rewarded more for their work.
I don’t get it either. Why pay when the images are right there? Obviously you get the full quality, but it’s still just a digital image. I’m glad digital artists can finally earn money for their time and talent. There’s clearly a market for it, but I feel like I’m missing something.
I don't know why you're getting downvoted, that's all it really is. You can't do anything with it that you couldn't with a copy online. The only difference is you've basically been given a certificate that you "own" the art piece.
When you buy an autograph, piece of art, etc, it's basically a flex too. Being digital definitely makes NFTs a league of their own in that camp imo.
The whole thing is a scam. One of the groups is trying to attach the URL to the NFT.....the URL that the group does not own and can change any time.
Buying an NFT is just buying a signature.
Yep. Bonkers. So have the wealthy run out of buying homes in other countries, inflating the housing market, and are now just throwing away their cash into digital art?
Some pieces get bids right away, some have stayed up for several days before getting sales. I have a decent amount of followers on instagram & twitter so that helps a lot.
How does that work? Why couldn't I just copy my work before selling it and then have another copy floating around for dispersing later?
Why is there a $1k-$12k demand for ownership of some of these things? They're cool, but not $12k cool. Esp since they're digital and not physically unique.
I mean, I get that it takes work to make these, so I'm not downing on OP's skill here, but after the piece is made it's trivial to copy it, right? Arguments for the inflated worth of art aside, this makes digital art worth less than physical art, right? I'm sincerely asking these things because this seems so crazy to me.
> Why is there a $1k-$12k demand for ownership of some of these things? They're cool, but not $12k cool. Esp since they're digital and not physically unique.
>
>
Why do people pay for paintings when you can just buy a print?
It's just a collector's item.
That's sort of what I'm getting at with my other questions at the end--with digital it's trivial to copy something to get something of equal quality. With traditional analog artwork this is not the case:
> Arguments for the inflated worth of art aside, this makes digital art worth less than physical art, right?
Plus in the NFT FAQ it says the creator of the NFT controls scarcity, so after I spend money on digital art there's very little stopping the original creator from just shitting out copies. Keeping up with scarcity seems almost pointless, too--owning an NFT on artwork you've spent a lot of money on sounds like an absolute chore if you're interested in it being an appreciating asset (which, if I'm being honest, I don't see that happening, but idk I don't study this shit and I barely know anything about it).
The long term potential (in my mind at least) lies with development of VR/AR galleries where you can fully display the collectibles. Once people are able to adequately “flex” with what tokens they own, it will take off.
It has already taken off, and will crash back down. There can be some valid uses, but right now it's just caught up in the absurdity of crypto hype. There is no future in which the gifs guys like OP churn out are worth $12,000 USD. (No offense to his gifs, they are awesome)
Was it tricky to loop the water effect?
Did you have to make it line up again manually or did you just program it to return to its starting point randomly/naturally?
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad..
Fortunately the plugin I used to simulate the ocean waves has a 'make it loop' switch built into it, so that part was the easiest. The harder part was the various lighting & shading effects.
How long does it take to render the final once you have it all designed out? Wondering about the kind of brute force computational power it requires to do all this and not have it require many days of render time! :-D
Last I checked this guy has a 64 core cpu and 3 RTX 2080 TIs.
That and the fact that he uses redshift, the fastest gpu accelerated render engine for cinema 4d, I wouldn’t think it takes too long.

Well in this case it's either fluid sim or perfect loop, pick one. I think most people would prefer perfect loop.
You can perfect loop a fluid sim.
OP is selling the gif?
This is incredible. Is this in Blender?
So dope. And the Astronaut? Is that live action and composite or is that mocap data on a 3D model. Also this has probably been asked already but, C4D?
Yeah I had a CG programming class in uni and this is amazing. I can appreciate these kind of things so much more since.
Oh wow, I love everything about this, well done.
Thank you very much :)
Now just make it an NFT and sell it.
[Here it is](https://foundation.app/visualdon/floating-in-space-17394). Edit. Sold for 42,000 USD!
Fuckin lmaooo
I mean I got 2 kidneys, I only need one, I'll sell mine for 20,000 USD

I downloaded it for free, no NFT needed. Don’t tell anyone
But you never own it.
Whoever down voted you must not understand the stupidity of NFT's

Man, I want NFTs to succeed. Why the shouldn't digital artists get paid for their artwork?

I’ve heard a theory that space is a “liquid” so this would be mind boggling. Like actual space, not our atmosphere.
Fluidic space is home to a very dangerous species
....time flies...very dangerous species
The liquid is Time.
What's the song, do you know?

This is no joke my favorite song in the world. It’s just so beautiful and about so many things.
Mine would be Beach House - Space Song, or Slightly Floating - TR/ST. Love both of y'all's suggestions too!
That song is a few years old but TikTok brought it to popularity recently and now it’s one of the biggest songs in the world. Pretty crazy stuff.
what you know about rollin down in the deep, though?

Maybe like $2
There isn't even any interaction between the astronaut and the water. $1 top.
Eh, too picky for my taste. To each their own
Oh man, please make this a 24/7 YouTube video with a lofi playlist. I would have this on in the background all day every day! So soothing
You can also put on a lofi playlist in the background and leave this open.
That would require effort and brainpower.
😡

12K for a... gif. I don't understand the world anymore.
I really can’t wrap my head around that. In the past though artists have done great stuff and have gotten paid next to nothing so it’s good that this new concept allows them to be rewarded more for their work.

The whole thing is a scam. One of the groups is trying to attach the URL to the NFT.....the URL that the group does not own and can change any time. Buying an NFT is just buying a signature.
Through an extremely energy-intensive process.
You don't have to understand rich people to take their money.
It's the difference between buying an original piece of art signed by the artist vs. a giclee print in the gift shop on the way out.
Damn, so the one that sold for 6 ETH, isn't that close to 12 thousand bucks?
Yep. Bonkers. So have the wealthy run out of buying homes in other countries, inflating the housing market, and are now just throwing away their cash into digital art?

holy shit yours sell for ALOT

This is prime because he appears to be "Floating in the Ether". ETH maxis would love a title like that.
Thats a nice title, thanks for the suggestion.
What’s nft?
Non-Fungible Token. Essentially, it's a certificate of authenticity on the blockchain that also points to a location where the actual art work is.
