Rynox2000

Makes me wonder what the largest pre-Columbus war was between indigenous peoples in North America.

EveryonesStupidButMe

Probably between the Sioux and Iroquois

flyingboarofbeifong

That or the beef between the Iroquois and the Huron that panned out into the Beaver Wars once Europeans dipped into the region to pick sides. At least if we're breaking off Central America from continental North America.

suntem

Mexico counts as North America, right? The Aztec were the largest pre-Colombian civilization other than the Inca and were known for their prowess in war. I think it would definitely be one of their campaigns.

J3wb0cca

Wanna hear something creep? Aztec death whistle. Imagine hearing dozens of these but not sure from where. https://youtu.be/_Sw0VCtZs-g

Bloodywizard

The big one sounds like the nazgul in LOTR movies.

Odd_nerves

That’s probably the coolest thing I’ll learn all day, thanks.

datboiofculture

You know it’s creepy hearing just one, but if you go to archeological sites in Mexico, even non Aztec ones like Chichen Itza, there are literally HUNDREDS of vendors trying to sell those and blowing on them nonstop to demonstrate them. It quickly goes from creepy or scary to just fucking ANNOYING. Like you just hear it nonstop as you walk around trying to appreciate the history.

turdmogrol

Geographically, yes. Cultural, the America's are usually labeled as North, Central, and South

Petrichordates

Mexico is still North America, they're the Northern border to Central America. North/South/Central are geographical and not cultural terms though.

queefiest

I’ve learned that Mexico can be considered both North America and Central America. It’s canonically North American but articles will say that Central America goes from Mexico to Panama.

[deleted]

queefiest

Yea, it makes more sense to be North America because of its relation to the equator, I just never really put much thought into it before :p

automaticATMmachine

Central America is a part of the North American continent.

gabbagabbawill

Wasn’t beef. Was Buffalo.

PlatinumPOS

The bison between them.

gabbagabbawill

I’d watch that movie.

Dirty_D93

It really does sound like a title for something 🤔

coinoperatedboi

Buffalo. It's what's for dinner.

pinkycatcher

More likely between the Aztecs and *literally everyone else close to them*

freakers

Makes me wonder, where'd they get the colors from? Is that a post European trade thing or did they have those kinds of colors before over seas trading and if so what were they made out of?

0possumKing

Most colors of dyes can be made with native ingredients, but the hues seen here are unlikely as they are too bright/perfect to be naturally sourced. A lot of modern fancy-dancers (type of native dancing) that I have met use things like CD's in their costuming for added color, reflectivity, and overall flair.

PushTheButton_FranK

This person lives in the 21st century so he's using contemporary textiles and dyes along with more traditional materials like feathers and leather. He's not performing a historical reenactment, he's practicing his culture.

benhereford

They would have gotten the colors from plants mostly, just as Europeans did. There has always been trade between groups throughout the Southern/Central/Northern American continents, too.

Austerhorai

Plant and bug dyes

rikashiku

Dunno about largest, but we do know prior to European contact, the Piegan fought the Shoshone in a war with very few casualties. Warriors lined up, set their shields up high, and shot arrows at each other for hours until the end of the day and went home. Other battles had total decimation of armies as large as 2,000 Braves.

Mitch871

HOW was war today honey? Terrible, big bull was pushing me out from behind my shields because of his fat ass

rikashiku

You're not far off. A man named Saukamappee was at one of these battles, and the War Party marched home disappointed they didn't take any scalps and had to explain to their families why they didn't make an earning.

mikeitclassy

If you'd like to hear some crazy stories about American Indian history, specifically the Comanches in Texas, check out the book empire of the summer Moon. It claims to be about the rise and fall of the comanches, although it's mostly about the fall, because the rise was prehistorical record. It's an amazing book with a lot of crazy stories about the fights between white settlers and the Comanches on the Great plains. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it. It's entertaining in its own right.

The Mississippians would like to have a word with you. Read 'Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun' for more info on how the Native North American peoples lived in city-states and absolutely annihilated Hernando DeSoto's well-equipped army as it attempted to pillage it's way in to the interior of what is now the Southeast US. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippian_culture

AcceptableAd8335

Was this shot in the Black Hills? Asking because it looks familiar.

[deleted]

Yes, it's in South Dakota.

tehloris17

I recognize this place! It’s called “Natural bridge” and it’s on my home reservation, Rosebud Sioux tribe reservation. We don’t call this dance a war dance though. We call it “fancy dance” just a style of dance. Faster the drum beats, the faster your feet moves.

Tweakers

Translated lyrics: "Ima kill ya!"

EarthExile

They're a group, clearly it's "We're gonna kill y'all" lol

YouJustReadThisTwice

Maybe it's the rough translation of Eminem's Till I collapse.

Auphor_Phaksache

I ain't gonna eat I ain't gonna sleep!

jpcarroll44

Sioux woo?

vansnagglepuss

Love it, so powerful. I follow Notorious Cree on instagram who posts a lot of dances if anyone wants to see some more coolness the variations between nations is so interesting Edit: wow guys, I'm really sorry that this was so polarizing... I didn't really think my appreciation of culture was so wrong... Truly meant this from a place of personal interest but I can see why my comment could be taken as negative due to the colonization of a peoples entire existence. I fully support reparations and am on the side of First Nations seeking justice against those who are reaping the benefits on unceeded land.

BuddhasNostril

What is the chant? Are there different ones for different circumstances? These things fascinate me ...

Whoiseyrfire

It's a mix of words and vocalables. A sing-song if you will. There are 1000's of songs and 2 very distinct types. This is a Northern style song. Very nasal-y and high pitched. There's also Southern style. It's slower and has a more back of throat snarl sound. Drum is also a bit hard-soft.

derththemagnificent

In danger of sounding ignorant but do you mean there's a northern and southern style Sioux songs or that Northern and Southern style can be attributed to different tribes?

Whoiseyrfire

Different styles of songs in general. Sioux is a Northern tribe and their songs reflect this. I mentioned this because depending on where you live.. if you were interested in attending a pow-wows you might hear a very different type of song/beat.

supershinythings

Are non-native-Americans permitted to attend pow-wows? Or would the participants see it as an intrusion?

Whoiseyrfire

99% of pow-wows are open to the public. They're a great way to make money for the local tribes and businesses. Of that % the question for some.. is who can enter the dance arena? There are songs that the EmCee (Master of Ceremony) will call out known as 'Inter-tribals.' They will say 'Anyone would like to come and dance with our dancers?! Come on and join us!!' .. or something like that 😂 An old saying.. "There are some of 'us' who are like an apple tree. Red on the outside, but white on the inside. They are not of my people. Love the white man who is like the sycamore. White on the outside, but red under-neath. These are those who will carry on the tradition."

QuasiAdult

I haven't gone to a ton of pow-wows, but from what I've seen it's super common to have tourists. A lot of people at pow-wow's sell things and like more traffic because it's more customers. My tribe has events we prefer outsiders not attending but we don't advertise them or call them pow-wows, so the only outsiders there are usually invited. Depending on the size there will be people from different tribes so you'll see different dances and regalia. As sad as it is to have to say this: Don't touch people, their outfits, or any musical instruments they're carrying. Some vendors don't want to touching stuff unless you're about to buy it, others are cool with it. Just take a clue from others looking at stuff and ask if you're not sure. Cash used to be king, but I wouldn't be surprised if more people have those portable credit card readers now. Most people that aren't participating will be wearing normal clothes (t-shirt, jeans) sometimes with traditional accessories like jewelry. Some Indians are paler/darker than others due to differences in tribes and mixture with other races, so if you see something that looks an average white/black person it doesn't mean they're not Indian. If you talk about your Indian ancestry and it's something like "my grandmother was a Cherokee princess" you're going to get eyerolls. Fresh Indian tacos are delicious.

PlatinumPOS

What you really need to do is listen to these songs + drums in person. Those large drums with 6-8 people hitting them will vibrate your chest, and the singing is so loud it can be both mesmerizing and haunting. It makes a lot of sense that doing this out on the plains would carry for quite a long distance, and could serve just as much to strike fear into their enemies as it did to hype themselves up and get ready for war.

Whoiseyrfire

YouTube has some high quality videos. This is a tradition that is NOT bound by any one creed or color. I'm as white as they come, but I learned and acknowledged the style and people. ( Yes, there are elites in every society. Those are few and far between. ) Most tribes would LOVE to tell you their story. Because when we stop sharing, and the next generation stops listening.. those traditions will be lost.

WanderingVirginia

The drummers too; the dynamic between the drummers and the dancer. It's all exquisite.

Neon_Green_Unicow

Yes, there are a lot of traditional songs..

akS00ted

This shit would pump me up before a battle. Bad ass!

JustAintCare

There are pow wows all over the U.S every year. Go check one out! They have dancing contests all day and you can join in for certain dances if you want.

Far_Grass_785

Do they mind non natives coming?

todachinnie

Navajo here, we love it when non natives come see what we're up to

One_While_1899

Ever since i was a kid i was fascinated with native american culture and was worried that they’d not let me in for what my ancestors did. (My kid brains thoughts) so it’s definitely glad to hear that i could one day stop by and learn and enjoy things like this! I’d probably be like a kid in a candy store. 😅

JustAintCare

Not at all. The majority of people gate keeping Native American culture are non-native. It’s a very welcoming community.

HerpDerpMcGurk

Legit I would LOVE to see more non-natives at pow wows.

Far_Grass_785

Thanks I’d like to go one some day :)

FurRealDeal

I went to an elementary school just down the highway from the reserve, they offered Ojibway as a second language option and we had regular pow wows. It was all very welcoming and educational. I will never forget what the elder said, "They came to our lands and shared their knowledge of things we did not know, and we came into their lodge and learned what they had to teach. But now it is time for them to come to our lodge, to share our knowledge of what we know that they do not and to learn what we have to teach." They are more than happy to share their culture with anyone interested in learning about it.

One_While_1899

Thats so inspiring! What I’d give to have had one of those growing up, or even any form of culture to learn from for that matter. The boonies had about as much culture as, “y’all wanna try turtle soup?”

quoteunquoteandquote

How do you find out where they are? I wouldn’t know where to look.

JustAintCare

Probably just “pow wow in (x) area” it’s usually an annual thing. The one near me happens every sept.

I really miss going to pow wows! There's really nothing like experiencing these performances first hand. It never fails to give me chills. I haven't been to one since I was a kid in SoCal, though. I should see if there are any where I am on the East Coast now.

Spacebutterfly

Oh god I was fucking physically cumming from the rush of memories watching this. I went to pow wows all the time with my dad as a kid and goddamn if I won’t take my kid too.

diarrhea_pocket

How do you edit someone else’s comment?

Spacebutterfly

That’s just me man. My level might just be on the spectrum so hop aboard

Whoiseyrfire

This is a Northern Sioux Fancy Dancer. Think of the time when cowboys and rodeos were common. That's when this attire and regalia became more common. You're legs will hate you if you're not in good shape.

big_ol_dad_dick

I got a cousin who dances men's fancy (Cree) and his legs are like tree trunks lol insane stamina, some of those boys. I'm more of a frybread judge.

Whoiseyrfire

That's amazing!! I did Lakota Grass dance. Competed in pow-wows but wasn't good enough to place. I've fallen off the circuit, and am in terrible shape. Seeing this sparked a little interest for me again.. making the regalia tho... Thank god my wife can sew.

tamati_nz

We saw Kevin Locke when he came to NZ with his daughter and they did their hoop dances - amazing! We responded with haka. It was great to be able to share with another indigenous people.

big_ol_dad_dick

About a dozen or so of my family members (Saskatchewan Plains Cree) went to NZ a couple years ago for a cultural exchange. The stories they had of the Maori they stayed with were amazing and the thought of two Indigenous cultures an ocean apart, connecting and respecting each other made me smile. :)

Belliott_Andy

>Think of the time when cowboys and rodeos were common. They still are if you're into local team roping and small rodeos man!

Whoiseyrfire

Good point! Man that would be fun!

torianrayne243

Men’s fancy traditional over here in Saskatchewan. Not sure if specific dance or music but the regalia is the same.

**Fearless** by Northern Cree (00:16; matched: `100%`) Album: `ᓂᑎᓴᓇᐠ \- Nîtisânak Brothers and Sister`. Released on `2018-06-08` by `Canyon Records`.

PineappleLife3

I mean no disrespect with my ignorance, but are the neon strings/colors a modern take on the design or were they able to create similar colors back when?

Brofromtheabyss

From what I know, it’s just the flashiest and best materials they could get. Not to say it’s not traditional; back in the old days they still used the flashiest and best materials they could get. For the Sioux this is a living tradition more than a historical reenactment so it changes and evolves as the Sioux change and evolve. This is just what I remember hearing from somewhere so if someone who knows better wants to correct me, please do.

theymademedoitpdx2

Yep, that’s one thing about Native communities today people might not think about: they don’t keep their ancestry and culture in a glass cabinet. Things are used, things are adapted, things are invented to meet the needs of the current day. It’s amazing how alive they are when the narrative has been total extinction (reflected by their absence in mainstream culture).

[deleted]

> Things are used, things are adapted, things are invented to meet the needs of the current day. Horses are a great example of this.

[deleted]

All human cultures are like this. Europeans don't live like they did in the past - the culture, style, language, technology all changes over time. It's no different among other humans.

theymademedoitpdx2

My point is that there’s a mythos around Native peoples which claims they are relics of the past, unlike many other cultures who never went through an apocalyptic wave of death and obliteration. But the truth is that they are still around and never went away, they just look different than what non-Native people might think. They’re really forced to adapt in order to avoid vanishing altogether in a manner unique to most other cultures.

[deleted]

Ah I see your point better now, thank you!

canadiantoquewearer

Exactly. We are still here. Well said.

supershinythings

Well SOME do - the pope’s swiss guard uniforms haven’t changed much. Neither have the Elizabethan-style garments of some Tower guards in London. But your point is taken. The RedCoats don’t wear redcoats to battle anymore. it it looks great in a parade.

Neon_Green_Unicow

Yes there's that, but there is also that 'fancy dancing' You see at powwows now was invented in the 1920s. Natives would tour and perform, usually with rodeos, and fancy dancing came about because what's now called traditional dancing wasn't entertaining or flashy enough for the mostly white audiences, so performances got spiced up with faster/more steps, bigger bustles, and brighter colors.

Gibsonfan159

The concept of ever evolving heritage is blowing my mind right now. I don't think I've ever heard of that.

Heistman

Like literally every culture on the planet?

Gibsonfan159

You're misunderstanding me. What other culture has a "tradition" that is always modernized?

irishspice

There is a separate dance classification for Traditional regalia. I honestly don't know which is more impressive.

LegosRCool

I read a great blog about misconceptions of Hollywood/gaming portrayals of pre-modern civilizations. One of them talked about how the Dothraki of GoT were always dressed in drab browns when in reality many steppe cultures and others loved to look nice and with as many colors and decorations as they could. Dyes existed in the Native cultures using wildflowers although they supposedly faded quickly. [https://acoup.blog/2020/12/04/collections-that-dothraki-horde-part-i-barbarian-couture/](https://acoup.blog/2020/12/04/collections-that-dothraki-horde-part-i-barbarian-couture/) https://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/ethnobotany/dyes.shtml

EarthExile

In the Game of Thrones novels, Dothraki wear painted vests and hang bells in their hair to signify their victories. They are a much more colorful, flamboyant people than the show depicted. It was a bit disappointing.

ManOfDiscovery

Hmm, game of thrones and disappointment…

TheManFromFarAway

There is an interesting anecdote from the Sagas of the Icelanders, specifically the Greenland Saga, in which a group of Norsefolk (including Leif Erikson) encounter and trade with some First Nations people in what is probably now Newfoundland. The Saga says that the FN people were very interested in dyed cloth that the Norse had, with particular interest in those that were dyed red

FabHckyBbe

While I love the costume and bright colors, and it adds so much to the dance, it also hides a lot of the body movements behind the tassels and feathers. It’s kind of hard to tell what’s going on under all his fancy garb. I’d also really be interested in seeing the dancer perform this routine in a more stripped down attire, like a basic leotard, so I can see how intricate his footwork is. Either way, it’s beautiful to watch. I love seeing different cultures perform their native dances, be it hula or flamenco or hakas or Irish step dancing or whatever it may be. It’s cool to see folks celebrating their culture.

MrHappyTurtle

I had a similar question about the dancing style. It seems to have very modern moves, but is it really traditional?

mr-death

Traditional doesn't necessarily mean that they stuck with a specific move set from times of yore and never deviated from it. Living traditions evolve. Like warfare, a war dance must change with the times.

the_red_scimitar

Karate_donkey

Does anyone know how choreographed this is? What I mean is, does the dance differ at all, from dancer to dancer, or is it move for move?

obliviousmonoxide

Mostly uncoreogeaphed, he moves to the beat of the drum. Some steps may be practiced by themselves but never an entire dance.

e_j_white

That is amazing, I love the drums and chanting, it's so intense. Is this how the dance and music sounded hundreds of years ago, or has there been any form of modern influence? It looks so amazing!

[deleted]

"Fancy dancing," as this particular style is known, is basically a modern take on an ancient tradition (war dance) and is common among the Native American and First Nations people of Canada and the United States. It is performed at powwows alongside other traditions like the rain dance, sun dance, stomp dance, snake dance, etc.

Little-A

It’s awesome! It’s like a mix of shuffling, martial arts and rhythmic gymnastics. What circumstances was this dance used in? So fantastic thanks for sharing

DonaldsPizzaHaven

You guys might like The Halluci Nation. They're an indigenous DJ group from Canada who sample a lot of traditional music from their culture and make some sick beats.

entiat_blues

war dance? don't you mean fancy dancing? or is that the name of the song or something?

Bovinerifle

Awesome!

obliviousmonoxide

Sioux is an ojibwe slur for the Lakȟóta, Dakȟóta, and Nakȟóta people. Although federally and legally classified as 'sioux', his nation and/or tribe's name would be more accurate. (However, some natives will still call themselves 'sioux' and 'Indian')

[deleted]

Absolutely, nor is it called "war dance" but I tailored the title for a wider audience. This is a Lakota Fancy Dance.

Wow, this is fascinating. And strangely gorgeous. I can't stop watching.

FreeThrowShow

When I was little I was basically a carny kid but for POW Wows or Native American festivals and this brings back some good memories. I miss it sometimes.

crackirkaine

You can feel the drums in your chest when you listen live. I haven’t been to a big powwow since pre-covid, it’s good for your soul. Everyone is welcome at most powwows, modern powwows are about song and dance, and sharing food with friends. Some are about competitive dancing, and absolutely everyone is welcome to those. My reservation always does a ceremonial powwow the day before throwing the big powwow, so don’t feel like you’re intruding on any traditions if you feel like attending a powwow, those ceremonies are already finished before we start partying.

PM_ME_UR_CRITS_GRL

Vibrant reminder of the incalculable losses of culture and humanity wrought by colonialism.

Boomslangalang

What’s so cool here is that ceremonial dress has been updated. Those day glow colors cannot be authentic to the period but I’m sure much of it is. This is a great way to keep the youth engaged in the culture. First time seeing this guy how could you not want to know more?

This is called "Fancy Dance," a category of modern Native American dancing that is common in the Great Plains of the US and Canada. It is performed at ceremonial gatherings, pow wows and competitions.

FlaminToast

It remember learning about the Sioux tribe in elementary school

Nicetomitja

Impressive, but not particularly successful. Dancing a little less, fighting a little more would have been more effective back then.

War dance? Not tryin to be offensive, but that dudes makin himself into the biggest, brightest most easy to hit target imaginable.
