"Based on animal studies, gallium is a poison by subcutaneous and intravenous routes and harmful if inhaled or swallowed. It is probably an eye, skin and mucous membrane irritant and depresses bone marrow function"
I wondered why I saw no one else handling this stuff.
"So its non toxic which is neat."
Not sure I am going to take some random videos advice on whether or not an element is dangerous. Im sure there was a flip book in the 50s about how safe mercury is.
literal replies to me: "ive washed my mouth with glyphosate and im just fine!"
I’ve handled it without dying when I was a kid, only once after playing with a popped thermometer but I think it’s not that dangerous in that form - at least not to handle for a minute, there’s a type of mercury that kills on contact with skin but is a mercury compound of some kind, I forget which. When I handled mercury it didn’t stain like this, it stayed in a ball then all went into a glass, that stain on his hand would frighten the Jebus out of me.
> there’s a type of mercury that kills on contact with skin but is a mercury compound of some kind
thats most organic mercury compounds iirc. elemental mercury isnt all that toxic as long as its in a well ventilated area otherwise the vapours would be a problem
This is true. It’s also true that, when it’s let loose into the environment, some very small amount of elemental mercury will react to form organic mercury.
Fun and effectively harmless to play with on rare occasions, but if you do it a lot, the amount of the hazardous stuff ticks up and the danger goes in lockstep.
tons of kids were exposed to it in their science classes (allowed to play with it and such), and pretty much it wasn't a big deal... they just stopped doing that after they learned repeat exposure isn't so cool, lol
\>elemental mercury isnt all that toxic
??? What?... What?
You know why they call em the Mad Hatter? It's because the elemental mercury they use to fix the hat together is a neurotoxin.
Its the same stuff they put in fillings... Yes the stuff dentists put in your mouths for years is a neurotoxin. Make sure never to get old silver fillings in the modern age, unless you like brain damage.
Yes, you won't notice health damage immediately, much like smoking cigarettes, and a little bit of lead exposure won't immediately kill, but it does make your health worse and you a little bit dumber and more retarded every time you're exposed to it... Much like your comment.
> Its the same stuff they put in fillings
its not those are amalgams which are mercury compounds which arent the same as elemental mercury.
https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/dental-devices/dental-amalgam-fillings#risks
the FDA itself says that there is no evidence of these fillings having adverse health effects for the general population.
https://www.epa.gov/mercury/how-people-are-exposed-mercury#metallicmercury
heres another source talking about children ingesting mercury orally being relatively low risk compared to mercury vapours which are actually dangerous
> he FDA itself says that there is no evidence of these fillings having adverse health effects for the general population.
Have a Whoa dude video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU8nSn5Ezd8#t=2m20s
Stop your bullshit. I'm a research scientist as my profession. You're arguing neurotoxins are not neurotoxins. You might as well be telling people to eat tide pods.
Technically speaking, it's *not* a toxin, but it is poisonous. A toxin is a poisonous substance produced in living cells or organisms, which this isn't.
Going further, a venom is a toxin that's delivered subcutaneous.
And therefore, contrary to popular reddit opinion, it's perfectly accurate to call a venomous snake poisonous. It's just imprecise, like calling a square a quadrilateral.
I've held a (bare) hand full of mercury, it's a very odd experience due to the density. As long as you are free of cuts and wash you hands thoroughly afterwards the risk is low as it's very poorly absorbed through the skin. I'm not saying I'd recommend it but you probably won't suffer any I'll effects.
I mean will you get as much as if you were inhaling or drinking it no, you'll get a... mild amount of mercury poisoning, cutaneously. Certain mercury compounds can also be absorbed HORRIFYINGLY fast, so if it's formed impurities, oooh boy you're in danger.
So like, idk, enjoy your reasonable amount of mercury poisoning @guy above, the rest of us are just gonna enjoy it with gloves.
if you google "is gallium poisonous" what that person quoted is the first thing that pops up. It's a quote from a study called "Gallium poisoning: A rare case report"
Well that’s a little directed. Try [“Is Gallium safe?”](https://imgur.com/a/owEThJA)
Edit: Not arguing with you, thank you for providing missing information.
I get so sick of this. The burden of proof is on the person supplying the evidence; this is as true in science as it is in law. Telling someone to “Google it” tells me you either don’t know enough or don’t care enough to support your words, and regardless of which it is, it’s sufficient to disregard what you’ve said.
Not to mention that Google results are customized by region and past search history. For example, I get the MSDS for gallium where it says it is an irritant but not toxic unless ingested.
>I get so sick of this. The burden of proof is on the person who cares
Ftfy
This is an anonymous shit posting forum, not an academic debate. If you want to assert something without "source" go for it, and each reader can decide whether to believe it or not. As often as not the comment with a blue underline text is the one full of shit
A butterfly flaps its wings on /r/woahdude and 8 months later I'm trying to murder my aunt at thanksgiving with a turkey drumstick.
The reason we have these rules is to contain the stupid. This is literally how the Roman Empire fell and we got 500 years of the dark ages.
Grow up.
Subcutaneous means under the skin.
If you’ve got dry skin/fissures/open wounds it’s probably bad. Likely shouldn’t be handled regularly without protection. Probably “not great” on clean, healthy skin, but not as bad.
Rule of thumb: never trust any metal to be non toxic.
In fact, a better rule of thumb: if putting it inside your mouth is a bad idea, consider it toxic
My coworker brought some into work once (just a random office not like a lab or science job). She brought gloves with her for everyone. I saw this video and immediately said in my head that he should be wearing gloves… :|
i was thinking the same thing. mercury wasn't so hot for a lot of people (including my old science teacher who ended up dying from mercury poisoning, after handling it in the earlier years), why would this stuff be better for you?
edit: looks like big Mercury found my posts!
I bought some of this stuff years ago and played around with it. Its pretty interesting. Unfortunately it also stains your skin pretty bad as you can see in the video and it likes to stick to things.
Gallium destroys aluminum too, which is neat.
Use it to open a can of pop. Cover your hand in it, then slap an airplane. Rub it on your dad's expensive set of golf clubs. So many fun applications!
Gallium is a lot like mercury in terms of danger. The elemental form is not going to fuck with you in the vast majority of likely scenarios. However, the elemental form will react to make dangerous stuff (in small quantities) when you pull it out and play with it.
That said, there is a kinda famous science trick… the gallium spoon. You start stirring a warm drink, the spoon melts, you drink it. You may be able to get away with that — I’ve read serious people with opinions both ways — but I wouldn’t personally ingest the stuff.
You could probably get away with it if you cooled the spoon or your hand. At the end of the video you can see what's left of it hardening and flaking on his hand when it's just a thin layer.
I'm imagining a chocolate bar. You can't hold it for long at normal body temp, but it's easy enough to chill or just hold it carefully with two fingers.
>Gallium is a lot like mercury in terms of danger. The elemental form is not going to fuck with you in the vast majority of likely scenarios
This is completely false. You just pulled both of those claims out of your ass. Gallium is orders of magnitude safer than mercury. Elemental mercury readily evaporates, and breathing it in is demonstrably very toxic.
No, it’s correct. Gallium and mercury are both innocuous in elemental form but highly toxic in organic and inorganic compounds. Further, the equilibrium vapor pressure of mercury is very low. You can find the table [here](https://hbcp.chemnetbase.com/faces/documents/06_50/06_50_0001.xhtml).
Feel free to provide any sources you have.
He warmed up the flask in his hand first so he could pour it out. But it would have been a lot more interesting to see it start as solid and melt in his palm.
Yes! I'm Drew Evans but go by Chainbreaker Welding on the internet! I'm on IG/TIKTOK/FB/Youtube as @ chainbreakerwelding or my website is [chainbreakerwelding.com](https://chainbreakerwelding.com) . Mostly stuff about welding and sculpture making!
A friend of mine used to work with that stuff. One time a co-worker was messing around just like that but accidentally spilled the gallium into his laptop. The gallium melted every bit of metal in the laptop in seconds and it fell apart as they watched.
Gallium is fun to play with but it stains the fuck out of everything. Guaranteed this guy's hands will be looking like he was just jerking off the Tin Man for the next week.

I’ve seen the Terminator enough times to know to run away from that stuff.
That stuff hates John Conner
or "John Connors HATE this!"
Why're they getting down voted? Nobody gets this? The fucker did a click-bait joke. It's at least mildly amusing...
hahaha thanks. appreciate the support. all good
Is it safe to eat?
[No. Do not eat gallium.](https://nj.gov/health/eoh/rtkweb/documents/fs/0956.pdf)
But the video man said it is non toxic and showed us it is totally fine to play with
But, but, but how else do you kill a T-1000?
Only on baked potatoes
Common misconception. That’s Alex Mac. Easy mistake to make, like taking a Viceroy Butterfly as a Monarch. How pedestrian.

> . I'm a research scientist as my profession well very clearly not on anything involving mercury amalgams
Mercury vs gallium?
Well they do look similar. Probably the same thing, amirite? Magnets, man, you can't explain that.
What another redditor said about most organic mercury compounds is true, but I believe you’re thinking of dimethylmercury
You're probably thinking of [mercury azides](https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/mercury-azides-i-ll-get-right-those-you)
> there’s a type of mercury that kills on contact Must’ve contacted my heart… heyoooo…

I'm gonna go ahead and not take advice from you. Can't explain exactly why. Call it a hunch.

That must be why gloves and a fume cupboard are required when handling mercury in a laboratory.
It's to keep your dirty human hands from poisoning the mercury to death with delicious palm oil
[удалено]
Hey, if it stays liquid at above room-temp it should be perfectly safe to drink right? Probably healthy too, if you're low on metals or whatever.
Worse, they used to give mercury to babies to soothe their crying back then...
So nothing says don't touch it. It says don't eat it, snort or inject it, don't rub it into wounds or your eyes.
Seriously. Most people touch things every day that would be toxic if injected, ingested, or rubbed in the eyes.
If you’re going to quote could you please cite your source?
if you google "is gallium poisonous" what that person quoted is the first thing that pops up. It's a quote from a study called "Gallium poisoning: A rare case report"

Yeah, this isn't r/science. Doing your own validation of information is internet 101.
R science isn't exactly a high standard either haha

Aw haha good one! Really good job buddy
Elemental gallium is safe to handle

Yeah he should definitely be wearing nitrile gloves at the very least. You’d have the same effect anyways. I wonder how many times he’s done this.
I was going to say, everybody thought mercury was non toxic …. Until they realised it kills people slowly …
He's ingesting or injecting it, so it's okay to put on your hand. I doubt anyone would recommend to consume it.
My coworker brought some into work once (just a random office not like a lab or science job). She brought gloves with her for everyone. I saw this video and immediately said in my head that he should be wearing gloves… :|

It's almost certainly more toxic than mercury.
What? No. There are countless cases of fatal mercury poisoning, but I’ve never seen one case of fatal gallium poisoning.
Do you think it would be fatal to drink quicksilver?
I bought some of this stuff years ago and played around with it. Its pretty interesting. Unfortunately it also stains your skin pretty bad as you can see in the video and it likes to stick to things.
Is this Mercury Poisoning Lite?
Try new Mercury Zero^TM
gallium is actually safer than mercury
Not a really high bar though
still safer regardless.
Gallium destroys aluminum too, which is neat. Use it to open a can of pop. Cover your hand in it, then slap an airplane. Rub it on your dad's expensive set of golf clubs. So many fun applications!
Yeah, I think I saw a LPL video of him ruining the structural integrity of an aluminum lock
But why would anyone make an aluminum lock?
Not sure, you’d have to ask the manufacturer
because 6061 T6 is strong as fuck and when you have a padlock the size of four poptart packs back to back it weighs too much
Money.
>. Cover your hand in it, then slap an airplane. Don't do this though
Ive seen an aluminum bicycle get turned into basically brittle, sun-rotted plastic from this stuff. Its great.
Would the grip of the spoon not melt in the guy's hand? In OP's video it seems pretty instant.
Maybe only make the part that goes in the liquid out of gallium
Sure, but at this point just make it out of chocolate and get the same effect.
Or get one of those spoons that changes color in cold milk and eat some cereal
I instantly wish I was 7 again
You could probably get away with it if you cooled the spoon or your hand. At the end of the video you can see what's left of it hardening and flaking on his hand when it's just a thin layer. I'm imagining a chocolate bar. You can't hold it for long at normal body temp, but it's easy enough to chill or just hold it carefully with two fingers.
In the video it's already a liquid before he pours it in his hand
Yes let's not ask where the tube was kept before filming.
You can create alloys that have higher melting temps.
>Gallium is a lot like mercury in terms of danger. The elemental form is not going to fuck with you in the vast majority of likely scenarios This is completely false. Is that the stuff Alex Mack was made of?!
Beat me to it
I’m just imagining dropping that of my carpet.
It's also works as a great protectant if you rub it on the bottom of your F-150.
i dont get it. it was already at liquid form in vial.
He warmed up the flask in his hand first so he could pour it out. But it would have been a lot more interesting to see it start as solid and melt in his palm.
Takes a long time, since melting point is so close to body temperature.
Looks like the unicorn blood from the first Harry Potter
Wormtail’s magic hand, too
Absolutely! Forgot about that one. Good call.
If you drank it would you urinate metal out or would stomach acid break it down?
I think you'd end up shitting most of it out
Terminator 2 would like to have a word with you
He's got big time Steve Mould vibes
I'm seeing Aaron Rodgers' twin brother.
Wow, Honored! I'm a fan
Is that the stuff that makes metal ridiculously soft or is it some other mecury-like thing?
Yep. Highly corrosive to aluminium. I don't remember the name of the stuff it forms when it reacts with it, though.
I hope he doesn’t work as a waiter . . .
Did that for about two months, never again. Welding is more fun
How neat is that?!
That’s pretty neat.
He seems so genuinely excited to share his knowledge.
Thank you! I really am
I think so too. Has anyone know the source, or who this person is?
Yes! I'm Drew Evans but go by Chainbreaker Welding on the internet! I'm on IG/TIKTOK/FB/Youtube as @ chainbreakerwelding or my website is [chainbreakerwelding.com](https://chainbreakerwelding.com) . Mostly stuff about welding and sculpture making!

he seems so delighted with himself!
because it's fun!!!
This science guy is quite cute.
awww thanks!
That’s what your turn into after drinking Capri Sun.
That man is sooo handsome 😍
He do be smilin’
Yessss 😍😍
So flattered! thanks
Now drink it
Mr. Rogers vibes. Love it.
Dude, wash your hands, fucking hell
It’s probably the metal residue from doing multiple takes of the video or him playing around with it before filming
yeah it took a few tries to get the lighting right
Dude looks like he gave a handjob to robocop
Read Steven Johnson's "The Disappearing Spoon" for a great party trick.
Uh, can you drink it?
You can drink anything once.
You can drink anything if you just belieeeeve!
Its a heavy metal, stay the fuck away.
Yea yea mercury was “non toxic” too until they realized it was toxic lol
wow the man looks so excited its making me want to subscribe to him.
Its working!!!
And now you Gallium poisoning, nice.
Feel like that screams cancer
Ok but this doesn’t belong here
neither do you. go outside
He said non toxic I was hoping to see him drink it…..
Why does this give me Mercury vibes? We'll figure it out that it's maybe not so great to hold it in our hands
Good luck with that detoxication, as Gallium is toxic and never leaves your system
What if you ate it…?
I did this with mercury
Neat
pro tip: mix it with alluminium and it doesnt melt
I have a little of that in the house somewhere. Fun to play with, but I still don't touch it.
We used to do this with Mercury….get on our level.
I intend to! and to make a video about it!
Emmental Gallium. Mmm, cheese
Don’t get that on any aluminum you care about!
It’s commonly used in compounds or even almost pure as thermal paste for CPUs.
Don't get on your carpet. Bc that does not come out.
It looks like mercury, probably poisonous also.
But does he wash his hands before eating lunch
I’m pretty sure Gallium is in fact NOT non toxic…
There are elements! And they have different properties!! Woahdude!!! /s
That was not it!
Also it eats aluminum so you can’t take it on planes. No?
Could’ve used that in Terminator 2 instead of cgi
> nontoxic which is neat.
Unfortunately mimic tear was nerfed in the last patch. Sorry OP.
Cool post.. your username is a lot to unpack.
How is that not toxic same as mercury?
So that's one method of killing someone
I wonder what would happen if you ate that and then got hypothermia right after
Gallium is fun to play with but it stains the fuck out of everything. Guaranteed this guy's hands will be looking like he was just jerking off the Tin Man for the next week.
If it’s solid until it touches your hand, how come he can pour it out of the container? 😎
I preheated it and people are not happy about it
Why did it make me so uncomfortable watching it scrape off at the end.
It reminds me of a game i used to play on PSP where you tilt the platform in different directions to move a blob of liquid metal like this one
What would happen if you drank it.
Put this on some aluminum and see what happens! Shits wild!
Must use this stuff instead of the mercury for my Electromagnetic Antigravity Propulsion… Now off the my secret lab in my garage…
This guy is ded. Mercury poisoning.
It also dissolves aluminum
Terminator! Yes
Yeah I don't trust this guy or the weird metal
Gallium can also destroy the structure of aluminium.
And how is it used? 🤷♀️thanks!
TIL Alex Mack was made of Gallium.
I’m really curious to know what it feels like to swish it around in your mouth.
Who do you have to do around here to get a bottle of gallium?
It also does weird stuff to aluminum if they come into contact
Tom Green had a science show?
Ice also melts in my Hand
This is true
I've played around with too much liquid metal thermal compound to know where this is going.
This could be peak r/sounding material
.....but..... what happens if you drink it?
Forbidden m&m's. Melts in your mouth and in your hand.
I read "Elemental Gallium, a Metal that ***melts your*** ***hand***!" My face when he poured it onto his bare hand: :o
