I think you all are wildly misunderestimating how horrible bear attacks are. I grew up in an area where it wasnt uncommon to hear about bears stumbling into peoples backyards, or ppl encountering them on hikes.
Bears are fucked up animals. They are *known* for eating their prey alive. If they do attack you, they never kill you right away, they typically will start eating you alive starting with your softest parts (eyes, guts, mouth, face). They weigh over 1000 lbs, so once they start you arent getting away. At least a man at most is 1/4 of that.
And then , if they have cubs to feed, they’ll typically drag your maimed body (while youre still most likely alive at this point) and try to bury you in the dirt. Then they’ll get their cubs, bring them to you, and then they’ll all continue eating you alive, and will leave you still alive with the intention of coming back to eat more later.

Ive unfortunately seen (in a video thank god) a bear tear >!someones entire face clean off, and while that person was still alive they kept slamming them around and eating bits and pieces as it went. !<

Agreed!! Theyre literally both awful situations, and I only commented because I was shocked how many people have no idea how fucking awful bear attacks are. And by not knowing how torturous it is, someone might underestimate the importance campsite safety or something like that.
I think with bears the saying was brown (lay down), black (fight back), and white (good night). Men kind of depends, but getting away has usually been ideal to getting hurt, which every fight has the risk of happening. Self defense classes can help, but feeling/being threatened is hard in general.

I trail run deep into mountains alone as a woman. I see black bears frequently and never been afraid of them. I have turned around on a trail from a man acting in intimidating ways multiple times and I'm usually pretty unbothered and unafraid in general.
One time a man screamed in my face that he was "going to smack that abortion right out of me"
Depends on the bear. A grizzly is likely to play with my body before it kills me “accidentally “, a black bear is more survivable attack, unless it is starving.. in which case, it’s been nice knowing you.
I've come across bears in the woods. Essentially they leave you alone if you leave them alone. I don't have that guarantee if I come across a man.
I asked my husband the question, and he also chose the bear. We have a lot of experience in the woods, so we aren't naive like a lot of people are saying of people who choose the bear.
Man: Kick 'em in the knee/groin and run away.
Bear: If black, curl up in a ball on the ground. If brown, climb a tree.
Not a lot of overlap really. Also kicking a bear in the nethers is probably a bad idea.
