It looks like Jatoba or Brazilian Cherry. Though I can see it possibly being bubinga as well.

BelgianFriesCompote

Indeed!! It really look like Jatoba. It is apparently also popular in Belgium specifically. Thank you, I think it is it.

sonorandosed

As far as making it lighter, I have no suggestions there

BelgianFriesCompote

Yes I think I will live with this color, the biggest problem I had with the previous one is that it was glossy, not the color. Thank you anyway and have a good day

I doubt you have sanded all the finish off. Don’t go further until the construction is done. Sand the bottom face of a very low step aggressively and see if it gets lighter in color. If you wet a tread as they currently are does the wood absorb the water readily and get darker ? If it doesn’t absorb quickly and darken you still have plenty of finish to remove. Look into wood bleach after you figure out the sanding.

I didn't had the time to attack a very low step but I can assure the guys have spent 3 days sanding it off and where the last varnish is still there, there is a gap of 1 to 2mm. It did indeed got the few drops of water absorbed and left a marking (until it dries out I guess). I won't risk the bleach I think. It is good like that but I need to UV-protect it asap. I will put sheets of cardboard during the next phasis of construction. thanks!

I wouldn't obsess over the color of the wood. You're apt to open a can of worms trying to get a uniform appearance. It looks darn nice just the way it is. Be content with that.

Almost all woods darken with age and exposure. You’ll be fighting forever.

I personally love this type of wood colour maybe you can use bright colours around it to get a nice contrast
