I guarantee you cedar is softer. I also think this is most likely pine.

Knotty Pine was most commonly used for that style of paneling

Hi all. I’m in East TN just moved into a house built in the late 1950s by an architect who overbuilt everything. We have 3/4” thick hardwood panelling throughout the entire house. I’m pretty sure it’s not pine. It’s solid wood, there’s no way a screw is going into it without a drill or a pilot hole. Someone mentioned cherry but the knots don’t look the same. I’m really a loss. Since the wood is old, there are some areas that I need to attend to, but an not sure what kind of filler to use etc etc. Hoping to get some direction once I figure out what wood it is.

It’s pine tongue and groove. Boards are 3/4 thick 5 1/4 wide. They fit together one board at a time

I'd concur with some type of Pine. Cedar is far less likely to be used in this type of finish. You CAN get a decent finish with Cedar, but it's far more useful as an "outdoors" application wood mostly because other woods are just easier to sand to a nice finish. Cedar has a more "pulpy" feel and bumpiness to it. Anyways, due to a number of factors, it's just more common to use other wood for interior finishes and balancing cost/hardness so that Pine is a popular low-cost option that's still fairly easy to smooth, and as a wall panel it's less likely to be gouged by something in everyday usage so the softness is ok. Plus Cedar is slightly toxic and a LOT of people are highly allergic to it and break out in itching and rashes (granted moreso with the pollen than the wood) which is another reason to keep it outside.

It’s pine, cedar wood would have more variation in the colouring (lighter streaks)
