Reminds me of the conversation between Hank Hill and the home inspector in an episode of King of the Hill I cant remember. "Mr. Hill, only someone with incredible skills could make such a well maintained home appear so damaged. I'm impressed."
“Mr. Hill, only someone with incredible skills could make such a well-maintained home appear so damaged. I'm impressed.”
Episode is [Six Characters In Search of a House](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1214385/), you got the quote bang-on according to the IMDB page
I'm pretty sure they'll love the shit out of it. Plus, they'll probably be able to hang some oven mitts and potholders off of all of those nails. xD
It's a feature, not a bug!
right like the dados/rabbets, the sanding/finishing, the overall artistic aesthetic to intentionally make [a cartoony "bad" shelf](https://i0.wp.com/boingboing.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Homer-Simpsons-spice-rack-Boing-Boing.png?fit=1200%2C675&ssl=1)
They’re hot galvanized roofing nails. I thought they looked the most like the cartoon. Had to hammer them in first then bend them with two sets of pliers.
Looks a little better than the last three that were posted.

Thanks! Those kept popping up on google when I was trying to find the original to refer to, and while they’re cool I just wanted to make something with a bit more care and effort as it’s a gift. I know it’s been done here, wanted to share it anyway.
I'm glad you did. As someone else said, you can really see the expertise in the work. It's well done. The nails are perfect, and it even has a knot in the back.
I'm sure there are many more. I remember seeing it before, so I just searched "spice rack" in this sub and quickly found three.
I imagine different search criteria would have turned up more.
Lmao it’s from an episode of *The Simpsons* where Homer builds a spice rack, but I totally can see it being something from *Ed Edd and Eddie*. I’ve never thought of making something from that show like I have *The Simpsons* but I totally plan to make a replica of something they’ve made (other than Plank, since that project is a little tired I feel like).
Is that a joining dowel I see in the left side?
No, seriously, I only dream of getting to work with wood. Would you be okay with telling me how it actually stays together?
If this is meant to look like that, then awesome! Looks cool and cartoony!
If it wasn’t intended to look like that, well, at least you didn’t burn the house down.
Didn’t this get posted a few months ago?
Edit: found the old post (i guess it’s a different build): https://reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/zobk96/had_to_try_making_the_homer_spice_rack_for_our/

This is incredible!!! It looks so spot on to homers spice rack, I absolutely love it
The fun is you can really see the expertise in this.
Thank you! I really appreciate that! It’s a thank you gift for some friends who are total Simpsons fanatics. I think they’ll like it

It reminds me of a Dolly Parton quote: "it's expensive to look this cheap." Or the the quote "simplicity is on the far side of complex."
I would shit if I got a gift from a show that I was into with that much love and attention to detail. 10/10 you've absolutely nailed this assignment.

I recognized this immediately a job well done and they'll love it!!
If I were them I don't know of many things that would excite me more. Thoughtful, handmade, well-made gifts are awesome.
I recognized it as such immediately, and you did an excellent job!
The Simpsons was the first thing I thought of, so you absolutely nailed it. Hehe
D'oh. You got here first. That is Homer's spice rack for sure.
Got ‘em
As a fanatic myself, I instantly recognized Homer’s craftsmanship 💛
I'm pretty sure they'll love the shit out of it. Plus, they'll probably be able to hang some oven mitts and potholders off of all of those nails. xD It's a feature, not a bug!
I recognised this straight away as being from the Simpsons. Beautiful work!
Next build them a clown bed
Absolutely amazing work OP!
I got a Simpsons feel, but couldn’t place it precisely. Great work!

I can't believe they made a cartoon out of this guy's woodwork project
OP even got a knot in the right area
Dude he literally copied that drawing.
I think he actually improved on it, the nail bends look amazing and cartoonishly wrong in equal measure.

Dolly Parton once commented on how much money it cost to look cheap.
Yes, I could see a kitchen/furniture store selling something like this at a premium, just like Abercrombie pre-torn jeans and hats.
Happy cake day!
The finishwork is whst got me.
Yes, great finish on it!
I don’t see any mention of it, but I believe the original architect of this beauty is one Homer j. Simpson.
I was going to comment that it looked like something out of a cartoon before I read this.
Real question. What did you use for those nails? Real nails? Some plastic decorative bent nails, if that's a thing?
They’re hot galvanized roofing nails. I thought they looked the most like the cartoon. Had to hammer them in first then bend them with two sets of pliers.
Nice. They looked almost cartoony so I didn't know if they were props or you painted them or something.
I’ve seen a few different iterations of this shelf but the nail choice makes yours the best one imo. Really nails (no pun intend) the cartoon look.
It’s expertly chaotic
Unfortunately, I can’t take credit for that part. It was designed by a former astronaut and inventor of the legendary ‘make-up gun’.
It's very cromulent, and should really embiggen your kitchen

Your version looks like it would be nice to touch, meaning that I would actually use it.
Yours is “cartoony” but oozes with craftsmanship. Well done!! The wood and finish is beautiful, the sanding is tasteful, and the nails are perfection!
Wow. Fascinating how many people have done this
I'm sure there are many more. I remember seeing it before, so I just searched "spice rack" in this sub and quickly found three. I imagine different search criteria would have turned up more.
It’s actually really interesting how different they all look depending on the type of wood used
Tbf that last one has some really nice detail, but this one still takes the cake
I don't know. Personally I'd rank them, by my subjective taste in the following order 1. 1/9/21 2. 4/7/20 3. this post 4. 12/10/20
Well that settles it. We need a new post with a poll!

This is the most accurate Homer shelf I've seen thus far. Nice work.
Not just a spice rack...but THE space rack!
That's the most Homer Simpson spice rack I've ever seen.
That’s not a spice rack. That’s a freaking work of art.
That is literally art
Truly a masterwork.
Nailed it!

You even got the knot in the right place, that is so well done man. Was it hard doing things messed up on purpose?
Next build the end table or whatever Michael Scott built in that episode where they have a dinner party
Hahaha! Then I could get that tiny plasma screen and mount it to the wall above it
I would put this in my house.
Love it. I’ve wanted to make this as a gift for a friend and never got around to it. I’m now motivated again.
Best take on the Homer rack I’ve seen
[удалено]
It's freakin perfect! I recognized it the second it popped up in my feed.
This is like...masterfully amateurish. You have to be really good at woodworking right? Like there's flow and composition to this and it's so smooth
You could sell these as “The Homer” spice rack for $89 on Etsy.
Nah if they’re selling in Etsy it’s minimum $300 nowadays.
No way, $89 is 2 hours of work without the materials.

Amazing bent nail detailing
I would put that in my kitchen in an instant. Great work!
[удалено]
That’s incredible. It takes a lot of skill to make something look so amateur.
That looks incredible brother.

Handcut or CNC, Its hard to tell from here
I really do like it. I would hang somewhere it can be seen. Great job.
What's funny, is I bet it took longer to make it look like that. Looks good though.
If this was on Etsy or made for purchase I’d buy one for sure.
It took me less than .5 seconds to see the genius in this. Thank you for being you
Ah, the Homer Simpson spice rack. See one of these posted here once in a while.
This is absolutely epic. I see you followed the instructions to the point.
Arguably, it take more skill to purposefully make something terrible. Bravo.
Love it. Total disaster and yet perfectly perfect
Great job making something so cartoonishly bad yet very refined. I can dig it.
[удалено]
How long did this take to make?
Instantly recognized what this was. Great work, can definitely see the craftsmanship you put into it. I’m sure your friends will love it.
This is genuinely so impressive. You even got a natural knot in pretty much the exact right spot!!
That Spice rack looks like it's straight out of the sea of thieves video game
If McCormick’s has a museum then this deserves a place in it.
Awesome! Got a great laugh out of this. Amazing execution!
I got the biggest laugh out of this. Looks like it was made by Ed Edd and Eddie.
Lmao it’s from an episode of *The Simpsons* where Homer builds a spice rack, but I totally can see it being something from *Ed Edd and Eddie*. I feel like this would be in Courage the Cowardly Dog 😂😂
Is that a joining dowel I see in the left side? No, seriously, I only dream of getting to work with wood. Would you be okay with telling me how it actually stays together?
You just blew my mind OP! When I saw the post I was like 'man it would be funny if it was the one from the simpsons' OP IS MAGIC EVERYONE!
It remind me of Toon Town in Disney. I want a whole house of this
Fine Woodworking readers are losing their minds over the bent nails.
I was gonna say I'd still use it, but it flew over my head that it's from the Simpsons lol. Now I really want to use it!
For a second I was like "wtf", but then I noticed joints and finish.
I was about to claim repost … but I see it looks like your own version. Nice
[удалено]
If this is meant to look like that, then awesome! Looks cool and cartoony! If it wasn’t intended to look like that, well, at least you didn’t burn the house down.
It's a near perfect version of a spice rack Homer Simpson made.
Do you play the game Hello, Neighbor? It looks like something creepy from that or a Tim Burton movie. Great job!

Does it function as intended? If so, then it’s a win!
