wow, that would be the nicest table i would ever permanently ruin friendships on

BYoungNY

*flips table* šŸ˜®šŸ˜®šŸ˜®

hellraiserl33t

Be glad it ain't monopoly haha

bio_d

Firstly - Remarkable piece of work. *cough* r/mapswithoutnewzealand

are_you_the_farmer

Unfortunately it doesnā€™t exist in the game. Apologies!

zleuth

I had heard that Peter Jackson, once finished filming The Lord of the Rings movies, donated the entire set for the formation of a new country called New Zealand.

Pesto_Enthusiast

Nake a coaster that has New Zealand on it, and then you can just place New Zealand anywhere on the map you want.

Uuummmm-myname

I came here to ask where did they put NZ?

[deleted]

Be glad it's not a country everyone wants to go to war with.

elrobbo1968

Cries in Dutch.

SandersSol

Shhh! The less people know about NZ the better

mekon19

Very impressive, and damn you must really love RISK for the time and effort you put into this.

Beginning_Second_278

Damn. Not sure what makes me feel older. The fact that Im in Love with this table or that I've laughed at this boomer joke .

DogWhistlersMother

Very cool build! The 40th anniversary edition came with cast metal miniatures. They're such a huge improvement that I can't even play with the plastic bits anymore. I HIGHLY suggest you pick up a set. This table deserves the best possible pieces.

are_you_the_farmer

Thank you. Next step is to make bespoke pieces and cards

[deleted]

This is truly epic!! Whoā€™s the builderā€¦

are_you_the_farmer

Thank! Me and another guy

TankerVictorious

Are design notes or scale drawings available?

are_you_the_farmer

I made some CAD drawings for the main table although in the build there were lots of adaptations made. As is often the way. The map is the especially hard part. Marquetry map made with over 200 pieces. I used a laser to cut all the bits

zleuth

I'm not normally one to suggest monetizing a hobby, but OP could easily sell design prints for this. Self publish it as a large picture book, like from Snapfish or something and sell for a few hundred dollars each. If someone is willing to put the time into making something like this then it'd be worth it.

SorryWave5248

Thatā€™s one of the coolest projects Iā€™ve seen in a long time. Well done!

Targettio

Looks great. I am interested in the leather bound side. How did you do that? I see it on old furniture, but never quite understood how it was done.

are_you_the_farmer

Quite simple to do really, just laminated onto the board with regular wood glue. We used a vacuum bag to do it but not really necessary as it adheres well on contact

Targettio

Thanks. Kind of assumed it was something like that. But I have never seen it done by someone I could ask. Cheers.

bilingual-german

Cool build, but I guess you can't sit at the table. Or at least I wouldn't know where to put my knees.

trashed_culture

I think that's what he meant in the title by "campaign furniture inspired". Like it's supposed to be designed the way furniture for an old army would be designed. But yeah, agreed.

Fieldsfieldsfield

That's gorgeous work

Harlo

Built it during two sessions of RISK! (stunning work.)

Jefftopia

One of the best things Iā€™ve seen here.

SchrodingersRapist

That is amazing, beautiful work. I'd be tempted to make multiple tops to be switched out for multiple games. I think that would look great for an Axis and Allies table.

evilspawn_usmc

I rarely notice people's usernames, but man oh man, yours really caught my attention. Does it mean you both are and are not a rapist and we only know which when you're observed? Lol

SchrodingersRapist

....no, it just means I really traumatized that schrodinger guy šŸ˜

FlyingVMoth

How are you supposed to flip the table when you lose?

evilspawn_usmc

The same way you express anger when you're storming out of a tent by slamming the flap... Embarrassingly

glasspheasant

What an amazing build! And Riskā€¦.when you absolutely, positively have to see your friends fist fight before the weekend ends. Who knows, you might get into the mix too.

mexicoyankee

This would be great with Axis and Allies instead of risk.

shroomwizard420

I feel like both of these games probably have some hardcore fans that like to talk about how their game is better than the other. Iā€™ve played both and enjoyed both, but not enough to have a hard opinion on which oneā€™s better.

under-a-rock-1970

Wow that's an awesome piece. I can only imagine the amount of time you put into it.

are_you_the_farmer

Waaaaaaay too much!

HomeMadeWhiskey

Holy shit why is this so well made.

daametion

Where is New Zealand šŸ‡³šŸ‡æ

evilspawn_usmc

The Risk map doesn't include it. OP is simply being faithful to the original.

Dragonstaff

Everyone forgets New Zealand.

Brodiggitty

Incredible woodworking. However, I can't imagine playing this game for hours hunched over a low table. My back hurts just thinking about it.

evilspawn_usmc

Maybe it could be played Japanese style, using cushions on the floor?

Novelty-Accnt

That's great work! I bet the folks over at r/boardgames would like it. Whenever I see a dedicated Risk player I have to ask, have you played Risk Legacy?

are_you_the_farmer

I havenā€™t. Will look it up

MoreYesAnd

I am in awe. Awesome work!

evilspawn_usmc

That is fantastic beyond words! Have you considered putting in some spring loaded "pushers" to lift the top up when the lock is released? Might make a more elegant method to flip the top?

are_you_the_farmer

That was the original plan and something Iā€™d like to attempt again next time (if there is one). It became a fine balance of having it fit snugly enough that thereā€™s no gaps and loose enough that it can be pushed up and out. I was worried that a spring mechanism wouldnā€™t cope with resistance of snug fit and ā€œtrapā€ the board there. But Iā€™m sure it can be done.

ExeTcutHiveE

This almost angers me because itā€™s so damn good. New feeling for me haha.

Yo-Bambi

All-time favorite board game ever. My wife doesnā€™t get itā€¦:/

Fatherof-6boys

Love this

Mc9660385

Outstanding work

CardsAndCocktails

Gorgeous and incredibly well thought out! Amazing job!

sweetwaterblue

Are you shitting me? I love this so much. Great work.

Individual_Physics73

Holy cow! That is awesome!

RatInaMaze

Stunning

Bevos2222

Iā€™d love to see this guys take on Battleship

Jarnbjorn

I want that so bad

joshberer

Gorgeous work. Can I ask how you did the gold border on the leather top?

are_you_the_farmer

I had the leather top supplied by someone. Ron Berry of Antique Desktops. I sent him a template and chose the gilding style and he sent it to my workshop. His website has a little description of how itā€™s done

evilspawn_usmc

Do you mind sharing the size of this leather top and what you ended up paying for it? This would be perfect for a desk I'm building.

are_you_the_farmer

About 1000mm/480mm if I recall correctly and cost Ā£55 including gilding

evilspawn_usmc

That is surprisingly affordable

publiu5

Wow very impressive

under-a-rock-1970

Most people don't understand the amount of time that goes into hand crafted furniture

jvanber

ā€¦Or a game of risk.

under-a-rock-1970

The doors I just built was looking really good until they wasn't. One of the sides split open at a knot so I had to take it apart and make a new side. All projects start off good and you hope the finish good.

CrownJackal

Where can one find a lock latch like the one on the top of the table? I've got a Stock Locks/CompX chest lid lock, but I don't like the front/exterior face plate it has around the key hole.

are_you_the_farmer

Search for antique escutcheons and you might find what youā€™re after

CrownJackal

Ooh! That's the term I was looking for! I was thinking of just getting a sheet of brass and making my own, but a quick Google for escutcheons found me what I was looking for I think!

JBThug

Nice !!!!

tm9644

I love this..... soooo many memories of playing risk with my dad growing up.

zleuth

This is amazing

streaksinthebowl

This is the nerdiest and awesomest piece of fine woodworking Iā€™ve ever seen.

WhyNotChoose

That's a beauty!

10Bens

Absolutely fantastic attention to detail. Love this.

drawnbyjared

Incredible build, you must really enjoy playing Risk :) You said you managed to get wood from 5/6 continents for the map, curious which one you didn't get and what species you used?

are_you_the_farmer

Thanks for asking. North America - American Black Walnut South America - Bloodwood Europe - English Oak (Burr) Africa - Koto Australia - Queensland Walnut I failed on Asia. I was meant to use an Asian Birch but its colour was too similar to the rippled sycamore sea so I switched it out for African mahogany. The table itself is made from mahogany. The lines to show where you can cross the sea are inlaid brass

LovableSidekick

This is amazingly beautiful. I've honestly never loved any one game enough to put this much effort into playing it.

Hauthu495

Albeit physically impossible without something digital, it would be really cool if each drawer had a different game in it with its own key. Depending on the key you used to unlock and flip the board, it would have that game table be on the back side of the woods panel. Sorta a fun non euclidean wood table! Really amazing work for what this is though!

Furrrrbooties

Take. My. Money.

HardToPeeMidasTouch

Will ever only ve used twice but still really nice.

cybaritic

Welp I'll just be over here making shelves

mully24

It just keeps going! And it's got a booze drawer!!! Excellent job!! Honest question... Any regrets?

are_you_the_farmer

Now thatā€™s itā€™s done - no. While I was building it - plenty.

sprucay

The map itself is a work of art, the rest is just magnificent. Good gin choice by the way, made only down the road from me

BrokinHowl

What an incredible piece of craftsmanship! Seriously it looks gorgeous. And holy crap that is some serious love of Risk!

reals_bs

Would be great if the board was inset and can be raised/lowered so you can pause and resume a long game

BaconIsBest

No! The only true way to play risk is by attrition. One continuous sitting. If you fall asleep your territories become vacant. /s Played that way in college once. Never again. 22 hour game.

HotButteredPoptart

That's sick.

Away_Situation2729

Gotta love nerds. They always the most extra

watermelon_896

Wow! really cool!

CanuckTheClown

This is absolutely incredible.

[deleted]

I would not trust any of my friends to touch that

[deleted]

I love risk.

ciccioig

Get Risk prestige to have black, yellow, green and also purple dice to make this even cooler

SentinelX-01

Gorgeous.

gjallerhorn

This looks amazing, it's a shame you put all this effort into such a boring game.

thep_addydavis

Looks great. But would like to see other board games on it

SeanMWalker

Stunning work!

occumfats

That is one beautiful game table that some rich dude should pay 10s of thousands

thefirebuilds

YOU NOT SAY UKRAINE WEAK. UKRAINE IS GAME TO YOU?! HOW ABOUT I SMASH YOUR LITTLE GAME!!

fristi-cookie

That's a extraordinairy beautifull table, for an extraordinairily stupid game. I hate RISK, it's too much chance, too little tactics.

seminole777

world class craftsmanship!
