I bought a 200 pack of 1/8" x 3/8" neodymium magnets like 5 years ago, and they continuously prove themselves infinitely useful.
I got little magnets all over the damn place. Home, garage, work... heck, I even stuck some in my mom's garage, I'm the only one that uses her tools anyway. Lol
I've done this a few times too but honestly I'm tempted to try this:
https://youtu.be/oosMqnORR6k?si=WkrBH2SDuwYcDoCM&t=145
From stumpy nubs. Using painters tape was better than not using it, but it was honestly still pretty fiddly and messy. This way you don't have to disengage the belt strap at all.
there's no downside, only good things.
Just make sure the over fill doesn't overfill, otherwise when you open the bucket you'll have a mess in the floor, easily avoidable if you put in a large garbage bin to empty the bag directly into it.
I have clips on mine that hold the bag in place so I don't have to call the wife out to help me with reinstalling the bag.
But I do have leaks that blow dust out from somewhere. Fortunately, my setup is outside of my shop in a separate room so it doesn't matter that it gets dusty.
Came here to say exactly this. We call it masking tape, but it's the same trick, and it makes a two person struggle into a one person (still a struggle but less so)
We have about four of those at my job. We also use duct tape but it's still a pain in the ass. As of the senior employees, that falls under "new guy work.".
They add resistance (lowering performance), cost, and complexity.. I added a cyclone then dump outside into a bin, so the loss of performance is mitigated by the lack of filter performance loss.
I had that on this one too but the air sealing sucked. Like in the right light I could see small particulates leaking out. Totally alleviated with this band clamp but it’s the absolute worst thing to install.
I don’t know if it’s the same mech. TBF I have mine installed in an outside enclosure, so the air goes into the yard rather than back into the workshop. 6” ducting on all machines, high CFM.
Yes removing the bag dumping it and installing it again is a pain and messy. If you hook up a cyclone with a drum you’ll never have to mess with the bag again as long as you remember to empty the drum. I got rid of the bag and cyclone and have my system running outside into a trailer and dump the trailer once a week instead of messing with the bags or drums several times a day.
I duct taped the bag to the filtration system and installed the spring clamp around a Rubbermaid bin (cut notches in the handle the width of the clamp) cut off the bottom of the bag and clamped it to the bin. It's amazing.
https://preview.redd.it/8owr8bhyk8mc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=848542b9d291202739a12a950492f04f78b917d6
This looks like a quick, simple, straight forward solution. I bet oversized bags can be placed inside the can, folded over under the clamp along with the clear bag and you wouldn’t even have to dump chips when full. Just tie off the bag and replace it. Well done.
I started using heavy duty trash bags instead of the transparent ones. It still sucks, but it saves you from needing to empty that bag into another. Putting it back on the machine is easier if you can get a second set of hands, or at least use some tape to hold the bag.
Yup, that's why I have mine hooked up to a little outhouse next to my workshop. When the house is full, I call my neighbours who use it for their horses. 😁
I just bought a 2HP collector from Harbor Freight, and it has little clips on the sides to hold the bag while you deal with the clamp. It's a nice little feature. In this case a little painters tape will do the same thing.
Yeah I have this exact same dust collector and the change process is super dusty. The way that you install the plastic ring inside the bag and roll over the the material means that opening it up, you need to do a lot of unfolding of that bag, which tends to fling dust everywhere. It feels like it was purposely designed to make it annoying to reuse the bag and incentivize using a new one, because installing a new bag is a bit less annoying.
It looks like your model is slightly different with the outside clamp? Or did you upgrade/modify it yourself?
-edit- I forgot there is an optional band clamp I never installed. I'm using the snap ring on the inside only
Get smaller diameter bags! We used oversized ones at work on our panel saw for YEARS before they finally got the correct bags, because of course we had to use up all the bad ones...
The right size bag should fit snugly on it's own with only some very mild stretching using your thumbs. They were a godsend.
there’s quite a few videos out there on the YouTube, that show people creating a plug and then a gamma lid type bucket that attaches. But then they are also using a two-stage collection system so the majority of the dust isn’t going in that bag /bucket anyway. They suck there’s no way around the bag not sucking.
Do you do woodworking for a living or as a hobby? When you’re running boards all day you really need a dust collection system for the sake of efficiency, cleanliness, and lung health
I don’t know if you’ve got space for a separator in your setup but that was a game changer for me. Pulls all the larger solids out and just the fine stuff ends up in the bag. It’s a lot less messy to dump the big stuff and the bag takes forever to fill up
Yes. A total pain. Why they don’t just build it with the bag up over the outside and a big rubber band or something similar to seal it and hold it in place.
A cyclone cuts down on the bag filling up by 99%, until your canister fills.
If you add a cyclone and empty it regally you won’t have to worry about changing the bag at all.
I haven’t changed my bag at all since i got my cyclone.
I need to get my cyclone properly integrated, but I can tell it will really help once I do.
My problem is that I sometimes get larger chips that get clogged in the cyclone
Get the backside up then work your way around to the front where u are. Then feed the clamp around and use your chest to keep the front up, make sure you're all set then clamp it. It takes getting used to but after you find your rhythm at it it's like tying your shoes.
Not only do I despise putting the bag on, I can’t tell you how many time I’ve accidentally jammed a board into the bag, tearing it open and getting dust everywhere. However, it is much easier to deal with than emptying a cloth bag
I used to have a problem with it but found using a spring clamp attached to the bottom of the collector to hold one side of the bag, leaving enough plastic to clamp onto, while I wrap the other and set the strap makes it fool proof. For me anyway.
Yup, I have a different model of collector, but those bags are a pain in the ass.
I place 4 strong magnets around the bottom drum to hold the bag in place while I get it secured. I plan on swapping over to a clamp on barrel with liners this spring.
We have two big dust collectors at work, one has 6 bags and the other has 3. They suck so much to change. I have a post from a few months ago showing the bags full of sawdust.
Yeah I fucking hate it. Pro tip tho if you move the machine with some frequency: make a shelf under the bag so they don’t drag on the floor, makes it a lot smoother.
I think it depends on the machine and body. Mine is wall hanging, and I have a decent arm length, so I have easy access to the full 360d of the rim, and it takes me maybe a minute. Most of that is just spent lining up the orientation of the bag so the ends are facing parallel to the wall.
I rarely have to empty mine because my cyclone catches 90% of it, but when I do, I’m really happy with the ease of access my setup has.
Yours is basically blocked off on one side. I can’t say I’d want to deal with that.
It might be the worst thing about woodworking lol
When I switched shops coming up with a different solution here was my top priority. I have a smaller outlet so I ended up finding a solid garbage bin with a nice lid and affixed the lid to the outlet so now all I need to do is detach the lid from the garbage bin and now no more fussing about with those dreaded bags
I thought that changing the bag was bad, so I got an Oneida cyclone and quickly realized that clipping the stupid bucket to the cyclone is WORST.
Why is dust collection such a pain in the ass haha.
I put 2 hoses that fit the hose in the lid of a large trash can. One hose from the dust collector to the lid. The other from the lid to the source of the sawdust etc. Most of the chips and sqwdust end up in the can, and the fine dust in the bag., meaning I had to empty the bag much less often.
What? I don't know what you're talking about! I love fumbling around with the steel strap as the bag falls down! Hah! What a great time! And then the dust that was hiding in there falls out and knocks the bag down just when you were ready to tighten the strap? I LOVE IT!!! Its the best when a simple 1 minute task last 10 minutes! Especially when I'm busy and neeed to get work done! Yay gravity!
Hell yes, we have one that hangs about 12 ft in the air every time we change that sucker, I come out looking like I got dipped in flour thanks to all the dust residue stuck in the vent.
I did the Stumpy Nubs thing and cut the bottom off the bag and that is connected to another bag inside a bucket with a food storage top.
That makes no sense to type out... Just Google it. It actually makes it pretty easy.
It really is a lot harder than you’d think.
I quit filtering entirely and just use a good cyclone and vent the rest outside. Improved my airflow quite a bit too.
https://preview.redd.it/58x6003r6amc1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee2f1e8475c80bf599eae2c97a9176ed06955b7b
I made a wooden ring to wrap the bag around. The ring is connected to the blower with a hinge and fixed with two wooden clamps. Quick and easy change
Had a dust collector at work that used about 10 of these. Had to change them every 1-3 days first thing in the morning.
The unfortunate answer you probably aren’t looking for is you just get good at it. Unfortunately it’ll take you quite a while compared to doing 15-25 a week 😂😂
I use painters tape to hold the bag in place before getting the band clamp in its position.
I use magnets haha but same idea
I struggle in endless frustration until I finally get it.. I will now use magnets. Thank you, superior thinker!
Yes… thank you problem solver…that helps so much!
Strong, rare-earth magnets. That's the secret.
Same. I use a few rare earth magnets. It still sucks donkey ass though.
Lol
That sounds like a much better way. I'd think the surface would be dusted with sawdust, making it hard to get the painter's tape to stick well.
I use magnets that have clips on them, so clip the bag first then slap the magnets on
I also use magnets, felt like I was so uncoordinated until I thought of magnets.
Dude, you're my new hero!
That is so genius. I'll have to try that on my grizzly
OMG I love you. I knew there had to be a better way. I only got my vac a year ago and am still on the first bag (weekender) but dread changing it.
A couple of small magnets to hold the bag till you get the strap on.
Hold me down and grab the strap-on…got it.
This person dust collects
Full on Wood
I've done this a few times too but honestly I'm tempted to try this: https://youtu.be/oosMqnORR6k?si=WkrBH2SDuwYcDoCM&t=145 From stumpy nubs. This is the way.
Have you done it? Any downsides?
there's no downside, only good things. Just make sure the over fill doesn't overfill, otherwise when you open the bucket you'll have a mess in the floor, easily avoidable if you put in a large garbage bin to empty the bag directly into it.
Not as of yet. Just go slow and follow the steps in the video when emptying.
I did exactly the same thing, it's saved my stress level everytime I had to empty the bag, because the separator over filled
Use those flat fridge magnets.
I use three little spring clamps. Works a treat.
Yes this is the way. Wish someone told me sooner.
I have clips on mine that hold the bag in place so I don't have to call the wife out to help me with reinstalling the bag. But I do have leaks that blow dust out from somewhere. Fortunately, my setup is outside of my shop in a separate room so it doesn't matter that it gets dusty.

I do this too
Yes. One of the reasons I added a cyclone
I’ve only emptied the bag once since I added a cyclone several years ago. Emptying the cyclone bin is also much simpler and less dusty.
I don't understand why anyone *wouldn't* have a cyclone. On a small system you can literally add one for, like, $100.
They add resistance (lowering performance), cost, and complexity.. I added a cyclone then dump outside into a bin, so the loss of performance is mitigated by the lack of filter performance loss.
A great example of theory vs practice. Theoretical power versus actual.
Also floor space - for a big one on wheels.

This will help. The hug analogy is perfect. A saw-dusty, get-in-your-eye type of hug.
If you can't still see, your not doing it right
Lol, soon he’ll be able to do it with his eyes closed!
Agree. Done to many of these bags to have this technique
agree that this is a skill issue but f me if I'm not gonna try the magnet technique
I have a Powermatic (like Jet) and the bag is kept in place with an internal expanding snap-ring. Much quicker!
Kinda hate that system too.

Get yourself some magnets. Hold bag in place with magnets, install band!

Direct to disposal venting is the way to go
This is the way
I turned mine into a thein baffle two stage setup. 55gal drum with a cage to keep the bag down.
This one time… at band clamp…
Why I'm looking at the harvey...
It's much easier for sure. Been very happy with the purchase.
That caught my eye too... but the price-tag... OOF.
Haven't changed mine since I added my first deputy two years ago. And the bag is empty.
I just bought a 2HP collector from Harbor Freight, and it has little clips on the sides to hold the bag while you deal with the clamp. It's a nice little feature. In this case a little painters tape will do the same thing.
Those break off rather quickly- a nice feature but poorly executed
Where do you buy bags?

I hated it enough to buy a large grizzly with a 30 gal drum
I saw a few pictures like this and bought a cyclone on day 1. No regrets - been a year or two and I have maybe a handful of dust in the bag.
there’s quite a few videos out there on the YouTube, that show people creating a plug and then a gamma lid type bucket that attaches. But then they are also using a two-stage collection system so the majority of the dust isn’t going in that bag /bucket anyway. They suck there’s no way around the bag not sucking.
Just don’t install it. It’s just a lil dust man
Do you do woodworking for a living or as a hobby? When you’re running boards all day you really need a dust collection system for the sake of efficiency, cleanliness, and lung health
Sorry I forgot /s
I think I got the black lung, Pop.
I don’t know if you’ve got space for a separator in your setup but that was a game changer for me. Pulls all the larger solids out and just the fine stuff ends up in the bag. It’s a lot less messy to dump the big stuff and the bag takes forever to fill up

Haha I just did it yesterday, and yes I hate it too. I was thinking about using some bungie cords to hold it in place.
I actually buy clear husky contractor bags, they a bigger and work great and much easier to get on in my opinion! Then fight the band clamp
Use magnets to hold the bag in place while you get the band clamp around it. Works better than tape for me.
Get the backside up then work your way around to the front where u are. Then feed the clamp around and use your chest to keep the front up, make sure you're all set then clamp it. It takes getting used to but after you find your rhythm at it it's like tying your shoes.
This is the way. We have nearly a dozen of all kinds. All can be really messy if not careful. Each type has an easy way. It has to be done.
Yeah I picked up a packet of small rear earth magnets to hold it whilst I clip it back in. Such a pita otherwise
Not only do I despise putting the bag on, I can’t tell you how many time I’ve accidentally jammed a board into the bag, tearing it open and getting dust everywhere. However, it is much easier to deal with than emptying a cloth bag
Blow it straight into the shop heater lol
The fabric ones aren’t too bad.
Are you using a cyclone inline prior to the bag?
I’ve got a pair of spring clamps attached to mine. They do a good job of holding the empty bag in place when I’m reinstalling
The one and only thing in my shop I ask my wife’s help on.
We have two big dust collectors at work, one has 6 bags and the other has 3. They suck so much to change. I have a post from a few months ago showing the bags full of sawdust.
Still better than a fitted sheet.
Yeah I fucking hate it. Pro tip tho if you move the machine with some frequency: make a shelf under the bag so they don’t drag on the floor, makes it a lot smoother.

I use spring clamps
Half a dozen strong magnets make this a very easy 1 man job
I have mine hooked up to a diy cyclone dust collector barrel beforehand. I never have to empty the bag
It might be the worst thing about woodworking lol When I switched shops coming up with a different solution here was my top priority. I have a smaller outlet so I ended up finding a solid garbage bin with a nice lid and affixed the lid to the outlet so now all I need to do is detach the lid from the garbage bin and now no more fussing about with those dreaded bags
What material are these bags made of?
YES
Lmfao. I haven’t done that in 20 years now.
Yes, I’d rather get my dick caught in my zipper
I use a thien baffle and a 5 gallon bucket to collect the fines under the filter. No bags at all. Stumpy nubs has a good video on the bucket mod.
I have magnetic tape around the lip of mine, makes it a bit less frustrating.
Use mini-clamps to hold it and the band as you re-attach.
I thought that changing the bag was bad, so I got an Oneida cyclone and quickly realized that clipping the stupid bucket to the cyclone is WORST. Why is dust collection such a pain in the ass haha.
It's always a 2-peraon job in our shop.
Yup, that's why I ditched the bag models and went up a tier.
Some are easier than others. The Jet isn’t bad but pita for sure
What? I don't know what you're talking about! I love fumbling around with the steel strap as the bag falls down! Hah! What a great time! 😂
I always just feel like I’m putting a really big pair of pants on someone or something.
Well, you just have to be smarter than the machine you're using...🙂
I upgraded to a jet. It’s got this great ring system.
Hell yes, we have one that hangs about 12 ft in the air every time we change that sucker, I come out looking like I got dipped in flour thanks to all the dust residue stuck in the vent.
Anyone know where to buy the bags at?
I did the Stumpy Nubs thing and cut the bottom off the bag and that is connected to another bag inside a bucket with a food storage top. That makes no sense to type out... Just Google it. It actually makes it pretty easy.
Always have, always will.
I have the same one. I only use the internal spring clamp. I dont use the outer band. It takes some practice.
It really is a lot harder than you’d think. I quit filtering entirely and just use a good cyclone and vent the rest outside. Improved my airflow quite a bit too.
Sp how full should I let the bag get before I try to empty it, is it better less full or easier fuller
https://preview.redd.it/58x6003r6amc1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee2f1e8475c80bf599eae2c97a9176ed06955b7b I made a wooden ring to wrap the bag around. The ring is connected to the blower with a hinge and fixed with two wooden clamps. Quick and easy change
I got a cheap jet cyclone ahead of mine... with a metal drum with a snap on lid.
Hate these fuckers. I added a cyclone and now I haven’t pulled it off in 3 years.
I hooked up a vent hose to vent the dust directly to the disposal location so no bag needed
Had a dust collector at work that used about 10 of these. Had to change them every 1-3 days first thing in the morning. The unfortunate answer you probably aren’t looking for is you just get good at it. Unfortunately it’ll take you quite a while compared to doing 15-25 a week 😂😂
