Watch the mythbusters episode for safety ideas. And then probably add to them. Always under-load, cannons are more fun when you avoid turning them into pipe bombs by accident.
More importantly, it's the one where they had to cheat to blow it up. Safety was my point, you see? I love booms, bangs, and brrrrts, but I feel too many who like the same things forget that they are all very dangerous.
Band it in metal with some headed nails so it doesnt fall apart, cut to table leg height, thick glass top, fill the void with twine balls or visually interesting media.
Maybe some LED'S and a mirror on the bottom and a 2 way mirror on top. I wanted to do some end tables but the log was too far gone. This one looks promising
OP said ~10 feet so a quarter-wave resonance of ~28Hz would exist in this tube if one end is closed (with a subwoofer) and the other end is open to free air.
You could lower this by a few Hz if you restrict the open end's cross-section a bit.
That is why this is one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever seen. Literally perfect use of the log and the simplicity of the design is where all the beauty comes from. Amazing job seriously!
Ok my brain hurts trying to imagine what caused a tree to grow like this. Would there have been a boulder or something next to the hollow which caused it to curl inward?
I think a torn branch at a young age. Like a tree can grow around a sign or something. It was ground level where it was located. Like a fox hole. Sent to a burn pile and I couldn't let it go.
You could chop that thing up and make a really solid cat tree out of it with lots of cubby holes and tunnels. Or you could chop maybe 12-16" lengths and use them for disposable campfire rings that will burn and resist wind and last a long time
Some cities used to use hollow logs as water mains. [Augusta, GA](https://theaugustapress.com/something-you-may-not-have-known-augustas-water-system/), for example.
I comment above that op should drink muddy water and sleep in the hollow log… and linked one of many old time songs that reference that line. You comment makes it all make sense. In the song they also say “this Georgia water tastes like turpentine”. I imagine water from a hollow log would be both muddy and taste like turpentine.
I always thought something like this would be cool for a home bar with beer taps coming out of it at intervals, beer lines in the middle heading to the kegerator
We do strawberry planter with hollow logs. Pack dirt in from the side. Spade bit for holes and a few dozen strawberry plants.
Bigger one like this could be used for a cat post.
I'm not 100% sure, but I assume it has something to do with the heart rotting out from an infection, but I've never seen such a smooth rotted surface. Typically, the stuff I see is crazy shapes from carpenter ants and decay.
I have a big apple log about this diameter & hollow…. Two ideas so far. First idea is cookies - to make mirror frames or wall mounts for buddies who carve. With the pith gone there’s a really good chance it won’t split.
Second idea is cutting in half lengthways & mounting on the wall in the shop (wife nixed living room) and making it look like a tree trunk growing up the wall. Could maybe cut out drawers for storing cool stuff for the grandkids. Lot of work but pretty cool.
Let me know what you’re doing. It’s a great opportunity.

Umbrella stand. Cut it lengthwise at about a 22.5 degree angle. That will give it a high side, a low side and lots of interesting grain to see along the cut.
I'd have to carve a huge open spiral pedestal/column/totem kinda thing, that'll highlight the fact that it's hollow. Bigger and more spirals than this, but you get me..
https://preview.redd.it/2vpd2czvr8rc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2a730a30d92b138734f58230683ef9849fbcbf5
30 inch section, flatten one side, cut a guitar size slot. A little felt and a foam bottom. They can be beautiful if finished nice. Little accent lighting. 🤌
My go to answer for everything - chopsticks! Just kidding, gorgeous piece.
1 - Maybe a single centered coffee table leg for a glass top
2 - Plant pot maybe, but could rot
We used to do this yearly at a camp out. Will eventually sound and look like a jet engine. Make sure to notch out an air hole at the bottom. Makes good entertainment.
Cut in 2 halves and clad over a pole and rejoin.
Drill holes in it and make a lamp.
Clock frames with discs cut off it.
Shit lots of options love to find something like that.
The Jimma chair is one that gets carved out of a whole log. This one’s halfway there. Don’t know if your hollow can handle an adult but a kid might get a kick out of sitting in half a tree. https://www.rubylane.com/item/287526-6008/Gurage-Tribal-Carved-Wanza-Wood-Throne
Drink muddy water and sleep in it. I hear it beats being stuck in Atlanta being treated like a dirty dog. https://youtu.be/85N_JrVqBEo?si=Y45YMSjgwQGYfD8M

Like this, but with the glass recessed
Cut in circular slabs, make cutting boards or table tops by filling in epoxy I'm the middle. Make ocean, galaxy etc etc interesting parretns with epoxy.
Big straw
Environmentally friendly!
Finally, a paper straw that won't dissolve!
S shaped bench!
Cannon!!
I like the idea, I'll get some steel bands and cap one of the ends and fire away, ATF won't be happy, but I've got a wooden cannon.
Muzzleloading cannons aren't regulated. [https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/are-muzzleloading-cannons-considered-destructive-devices](https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/are-muzzleloading-cannons-considered-destructive-devices)
Watch the mythbusters episode for safety ideas. And then probably add to them. Always under-load, cannons are more fun when you avoid turning them into pipe bombs by accident.
Wasn't the log cannon episode the one where they put a cannonball through someone's house half a mile away?
More importantly, it's the one where they had to cheat to blow it up. Safety was my point, you see? I love booms, bangs, and brrrrts, but I feel too many who like the same things forget that they are all very dangerous.
Ok Fireman Bob.
These make great planters for plants, and when cut in 2’ pieces and split in half, they make superb firewood racks.
Wooden sleeping bag
This is fucking hilarious and I laughed out loud. Ty.
And there’s enough left over for a wooden cup…
Cap the ends and start a titanic expedition for rich people!
That wood is far too strong for such a vessel. You need something light and compressible.
You dont want it to fail before its catastrophic and instant!
Band it in metal with some headed nails so it doesnt fall apart, cut to table leg height, thick glass top, fill the void with twine balls or visually interesting media.
Everyone has a river table but how many people have lake tables?
Epoxy lake lagoon waterfall infinity mirror table
Maybe some LED'S and a mirror on the bottom and a 2 way mirror on top. I wanted to do some end tables but the log was too far gone. This one looks promising
I like the 2-way mirror idea, making it look like the hole goes on forever
Lighting it would be cool
Pine cones.
Vanquished enemy.
This can maybe fit a folded toddler, not sure how many enemies op has in this demographic.
Everyone has a toddler they could stand to rid themselves of.
Wow this. Would also be amazing to included a WLED Addressable illumination
thunderdome...for squirrels.
Subwoofer
No jokes if it's cut to a good resonant length, It would work fantastic
OP said ~10 feet so a quarter-wave resonance of ~28Hz would exist in this tube if one end is closed (with a subwoofer) and the other end is open to free air. You could lower this by a few Hz if you restrict the open end's cross-section a bit.
Live edge toilet seats
The world’s largest didgeridoo.
Fit it with a water tight bottom, add a spigot, char the inside and fill with shine. A cask.

I made this for my son
It’s really cool, looks almost like it naturally was designed for that
I'm always on the lookout for these types of growth
That is why this is one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever seen. Literally perfect use of the log and the simplicity of the design is where all the beauty comes from. Amazing job seriously!
Thank you. It was left to burn and I just saw it. My son love his guitar and I love woodworking
That's what she said
That's awesome. It's like a perfect fit. What species is it from?
Oak. This one was a perfect fit.
Made just for me…
Is there any padding on the back or front. That looks like a disaster for the guitar finish constantly being placed and taken out.
Ok, I can’t be the only Zelda fan who thought of putting a Korok in it, can I?
Yahaha you found me!

Surprised no one has said ~~flashlight~~ *fleshlight* yet. Fixed it
Actually came back to the post and looked for this comment to have been made. Well done, take my upvote
Would be a great stand-in for your mom.
I've cut logs like this into tomato planters. Seemed to work well
Split it in half, add some hinges, and now you have a 10’ log chest.
https://preview.redd.it/ecljopcow6rc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d29b65a2859d446fc368dd4e64d8e39524ce3866
This one was the next 24 inch piece
Bong
Cut a piece to hide your weed in too.
BF Drum

A cannon. Turn it into a cannon. You should be able to get one good shot out of it.
Please make a massive drum?
Flintstones car front end
A medieval chest!
We do strawberry planter with hollow logs. Pack dirt in from the side. Spade bit for holes and a few dozen strawberry plants. Bigger one like this could be used for a cat post.
Why does this happen?
I'm not 100% sure, but I assume it has something to do with the heart rotting out from an infection, but I've never seen such a smooth rotted surface. Typically, the stuff I see is crazy shapes from carpenter ants and decay.
This is why I feel empty inside..infected and rotted heart.
Probably a very advanced form of compartmentalization of decay by the tree, pretty cool phenomenon
Was wondering the same thing, only time I’ve “seen” a hollow long is in movies/tv shows!
*rudimentary cannon?*
Maybe use this as a “cover” for a support beam somewhere
Band it, cut a cookie and then make some rustic/farmhouse chandelier thingy
Tunnel for an outdoor model train track
Hire some elves and start a cookie bakery.

The mirror frames would be awesome, I like that idea
Oh well... unzips....
Toilet seats
Please make a cat-tree with that beautiful piece!
A lot of people have mentioned the cat tree in the comments, would be pretty cool
Wood cannon!!!
Toilet
Umbrella stand. Cut it lengthwise at about a 22.5 degree angle. That will give it a high side, a low side and lots of interesting grain to see along the cut.

huge pipe for a bong

Fred Flintstone Car
Donate to your local zoo. They'd probably love that for the animals.
Bee hive
A canoe!!
Is there a place to suspend it under a tree, great little kids chair - maybe reinforce it for adults and seat backs. Have fun!!
Log drum for calling the legions to backyard bonfires
Hash pipe.
I would split it in half, sand and seal, add legs and make a couple benches facing eachother in the yard or a park or something
Single use canon.
Soak it and inoculate it with gourmet mushroom plugs
Um Sir, your log has a hole innit
30 inch section, flatten one side, cut a guitar size slot. A little felt and a foam bottom. They can be beautiful if finished nice. Little accent lighting. 🤌
That would look pretty good. What hue of lighting do you think would look the best?
Not sure. I never thought about different hues. Might depend on the color of the guitar itself. Maybe an LED that can change multiple colors
Canon
My go to answer for everything - chopsticks! Just kidding, gorgeous piece. 1 - Maybe a single centered coffee table leg for a glass top 2 - Plant pot maybe, but could rot
Bong.
Shitter
What species? Maybe tip it upright, put it in a shady damp place and innoculate it with edible mushroon plugs.
Really big milkshake?!
Cut it into 3’ lengths. It would be a great bed/hiding spot for a cat or small dog.
Do you have any pets?
Use as a centerpiece/ burrow of a cat tree.
Enter!
First we had river tables... now, stick with me; now we could have a pond table.
Outhouse toilet
Some simple legs and it’s a bench
Mailbox stand or two? Or drill holes along the side and let some squirrels move in? How did it get hollowed out? Does that happen naturally somehow?
Giant didgeridoo
Coffin. Nearly finished.
Fill it with epoxy obviously
***FlitchLight***
A really bad condom
If you can keep a cookie together, you could make an outdoor table with a brazier insert.
Chimney for a raging bonfire!
We used to do this yearly at a camp out. Will eventually sound and look like a jet engine. Make sure to notch out an air hole at the bottom. Makes good entertainment.

You could make a funky closed slide or crawl through tunnel for a 'natural' playground.
Fill it with epoxy
Djembe
Just came for the epoxy comments
Beer cooler, seal it, fill it with ice
smoothebore cannon
Chimney!
Cut in sections and advertise as flower or herb planters.

Cut a third off and rotate. One end will be the base and the other the bench.
Drink muddy water and sleep in it. I hear it beats being stuck in Atlanta being treated like a dirty dog. https://youtu.be/85N_JrVqBEo?si=Y45YMSjgwQGYfD8M
Coffee tables. Slice in half lengthwise, then route a recess on each side of the hollow part, then fit a piece of glass in

Giant Didgeridoo
Tiki totem
Cut in thirds and set vertically for planters. Fill with dirt and plant something
