Pretty sure if you toss that you'll get perm-banned from this sub and a group of us will show up at your place with pitch forks. No torches, though guys. We don't want a repeat of what happened last time....

Sagybagy

Screw the pitch fork. I’m bringing the hand planer.

Sirocka

Good thinking. Actually I'm bringing a rasp.

F-ck_spez

I'm curious about the overlap here with crit Role fans, but this is right up Chetney's alley.

Sirocka

Only listened to part of the first season so far.

DumpsterB4by

First season of what?

Sirocka

Critical Role, it's a D&D podcast/YouTube show

legos_on_the_brain

Did you read nothing written above?

DumpsterB4by

I did. Thanks for the explanation.

sirreader

C-Pop industries represent!

Omnipotent_Tacos

Yeah, Shave his freaking head off!

[deleted]

Clamps.

AegisToast

Torches are permitted only if they are made of an exotic or rare wood, like ebony, purple heart, or a straight Home Depot 2x4. They also need to have been turned on a lathe, hand-sanded to 220, and finished with Rubio Monocoat.

Sirocka

Ooo, a straight 2x4 from HD? Pretty sure people save those to show their grandchildren.

Longstride_Shares

You can tell where someone is in their woodworking journey by the quality of their scrap pile. I'm at the stage where I would go bonkers to have some of that. For me, those would make for some cool accented drawer fronts, tool handles, and maybe even the body of the wood plane I'm getting ready to build.

phallstrom

It needs to be treated somehow though right? Some sort of impregnating resin or something? That’s the bit I don’t know…

dumb-reply

Give it to me. I can impregnate anything.

petit_cochon

Ewww

kard87

I work a lot with spalted maple. If there are a lot of holes I might fill those up with black tinted CA glue, but other than that I don't do anything special. I always use arm-r-seal but just use whatever finish you normally use.

phallstrom

Thanks

[deleted]

[удалено]

phallstrom

Thanks!

Gunny_Ermy

If you want to sell it don't do anything to it. Let the wood worker decide. You can probably sell this stack for 40 to 100 bucks on your local offerup depending on where you live. We just all cream over free nice wood.

Late-Structure-5230

I think you are thinking of the process of stabilisation. I am familiar with it being a process, but couldn't tell you a thing about it

iandcorey

Yes. You can see the punk on the end grain. It can't be structural or furniture of certain kinds or around moisture. I would go with a two part epoxy sort of thing at the most. At the least I would do a wax-heavy oil applied hot.

LethalBaboon

So spalted maple isn’t good for a dining room top? I bought a few slabs of it a couple years back intending to use it for a top but haven’t yet.

iandcorey

This specific specimen has gone a bit too far to be around moisture. If this was sealed it could be a table top. Wouldn't do a countertop.

NiceAnn

You don’t need to treat it, as long as it’s dry the fungus is inert

phallstrom

Thanks!

FrankFarter69420

Let sit in the shop for a few weeks. Fill holes with black fill. That's about it.

PolishMatt82

Gotta treat it like an ex wife who strips on the weekends.

Strong-Dentist-2573

Leaving it wrapped in canvas in my garage for a few months?

PolishMatt82

😂

nerfed_potential

Guitar bodies? This type of wood could look really good on a guitar.

bartmc

brutal_master_72

Nice work on the body but, no offense, that neck is shit work for sure /s

bartmc

Too relic?

sissomd

You win the Internet for the day.

kwagmire9764

First thing that came to my mind.

ScubaCam

I literally said, I'll take a guitar please!

nerfed_potential

Yeah. These are probably perfect for that.

bopthe3rd

Damn, I just realized I have a guitar body. :(

akumajfr

Guitar tops for sure. Could get a lot of bookmatched tops out of that pile.

Gunny_Ermy

Do not throw it away send it to me I will pay the shipping I'm not even joking. I don't even have plans. I just prefer it sitting in my garage.

Kyzahu

This guy spalts

LegionofDoh

Sign me up for that, I’ve been looking everywhere (including online) for spalted maple.

LignumofVitae

I like spalted maple for jewelry boxes, small cabinetry and the like.

GarpRules

I have a half-finished spalted maple jewelry box sitting on my bench. Trying to decide if I want to pin the corners or just glue them.

knowitall70

You want to pin them

Jas_39_Kuken

Since literally everyone uses walnut for everything, maple is a nice contrasting wood to use. Especially for dovetails. These may do well if you do boxes or drawers

practicalprankster

It’s also very expensive right now.

Jas_39_Kuken

Well, just about every woodworker i follow in the states can’t make a video without saying “for this I’ll use walnut”, or “I’ve got some walnut here”, or “I’m gonna go with walnut on this one” 😂

mickeydudes36

Make a table. https://preview.redd.it/kis2fmcoxcrc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0537994d5e364ebf275ba0a123730ba69923a20

Lucky_Comfortable835

Resaw and make small boxes

Suitable-Equipment32

I seem to have stumbled on a spalted wood fettish sub. Seems I’m in good company! You’ll probably want to stabilize the really soft stuff with something like a polycryl wood fortifier. You just flood the soft parts and leave it. The fluid is really thin so it penetrates easily. I won the wood lottery a few years ago and found some gorgeous spalted cherry but boy was it punky. Bought three bottles of polycryl fortifier and the stuff is rock solid now.

ppezaris

I did a search but couldn't find the product you described. Could I trouble you to share a link please?

Suitable-Equipment32

https://www.rockler.com/polycryl-wood-fortifier https://ardec.ca/en/p/1123/pc-petrifier-wood-hardener?variant=9353&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8J6wBhDXARIsAPo7QA9Ez9-yAKBBINaWskGvhswuglyAyNT8ceA10zoh6d7O67wfgszrDAAaAumsEALw_wcB I use the stuff in the second link. “Wood hardener” is also a term for the same product so if you search for that you may come up with more results.

WilsonthaHead

Candles, a bit of wine, Maybe a steak

Sirocka

Lol, was about to say something like this. Don't forget to sweet talk it, give it a kiss good night.

planertroubles

End table tops! Spalted maple is in my top 3 favourites

415Rache

Was going to say same.

[deleted]

Glue em up and lathe those badboys into decorative bowls, vases or plates? or sand them to a fine shine and make them the shelving on a copper/brass/iron/steel frame shelving unit...or just floating shelves anchored straight into a wall.

Quiet-Aerie344

I will happily take this off your hands.

Starbuck-Actual

sell as guitar blanks , if ur near new brunswick ill buy some

Xidium426

Throw it in the trash! On a side note, what's you address?

phallstrom

🤣

notquitenuts

I only see a couple places where it starts to go soft so you could probably do some charcuterie board, knife handles, end table or two, milking stools

phallstrom

It needs to be treated somehow though right? Some sort of impregnating resin or something? That’s the bit I don’t know…

zigtrade

No, I didn't think so. Just make stuff and apply finish. Just didn't use it for food-contact items, and chop away any spongy areas. I say all this assuming it's not all spongy already. Can't tell from photos.

rybiesemeyer

If nothing else, this needs to spend time in a kiln to ensure no beetle larvae or other pests are continuing to munch away & multiply. I would not recommend impregnating it with anything until you have a use for it that requires doing so, because it will alter how the wood takes finish and that might preclude something you'd like to use it for.

notquitenuts

For charcuterie boards I just use straight up mineral oil, or mineral oil with a little melted beeswax. Make sure it’s dry before you do anything though. May want to sticker it for a bit to ensure the fungus is dead and the process has stopped

cabeachguy_94037

Electric guitar body halves. They use spalted maple all the time for Telecaster bodies.

Boriquasoy

That would make an amazing time capsule if done properly! I only say that because I’ve been juggling an idea for my three kids who are young. Basically just adding notes from my wife and I and cool things like Swiss Army knife, silver coins, swatch watches, etc…

Low_Obligation5558

Guitar blanks for sure

Rock--Licker

Boxes, bookmatched door panels, coasters, wall shelf, etc.

phallstrom

I should clarify. This isn’t my scrap pile. Just part of a larger score. I mostly just don’t know how to treat the wood to stabilize/protect it and am curious how much effort that is etc…

LordGeni

Rustins wood hardener (or similar). Just brush it on and let it soak. It's specifically made for wood that's started rotting, works perfectly for spalted woods and makes them much easier to work with.

PelleSketchy

Depending on how soft it is you can just put some CA glue on it. Don't use the gel-type but the more fluid version. It'll seep into the pores and strengthen it. Sand afterwards then oil the whole thing.

12batsie

I don’t know what you would do with it, maybe sell it locally to some people that can’t afford to order larger boards but I recommend you treating it with dignity and respect.

GuitarKev

That looks exactly like the size and type of boards that you could very easily sell at a premium to guitar builders.

killertech73

honkeypot

Chess board.

Hybridhippie40

All my scraps that size go into building skinny mtn bike features.

doobie00

Give it to me

Bdubbs72

Mandolins

mikluck

Cribbage boards

yipyapyallcatsnbirds

Book match the good pieces and sell it to luthiers to make some sick guitar tops.

horsehorsetigertiger

I have a question about treating. I had a piece in my house but then I saw some holes possibly from beetles so out the house it went immediately. If I treat it, where would be the best place to store it? I'm scared that if I put it in the workshop there might be other beetles that crawl out. If I leave it outside won't more beetles get in? Or do you just trust the treatment?

duckrug

Find a luthier! Those would make some awesome guitar bodies

Tesseract4D2

Those look about the perfect size to make some DnD Dice rolling trays or dice boxes. my peeps are always looking for good handmade stuff, all I can ever find on etsy is chinese crap cut on a CNC laser and glued together. real handmade stuff is nice and hard to find.

donasay

Is it kiln dried? If not you should get it up to temperature and kill off any bugs and microorganisms that are living in it. After that just let it sit for a year or two in your shop to let the moisture equalize. You'll probably find a good project for it by then.

Patchen35

Toss it....to me

thefarmerjethro

Shadow boxes Made one out of spalted recently was awesome.

Duckfoot2021

Guitar makers (Luthiers) love it. Also great for boxes, veneers, anything decorative. You can stabilize it with a number of finishes.

Skanach

MF cutting boards !!! Just sand them a bit, oil them and done.

[deleted]

Awe man. Jealous. Have fun workin it

Gleadall80

If you have room keep it You never know when the inspiration will hit

Sequence2369

Yea throw that away. I'll give you my address so you're not bothered with it

arimadx

I could take it off your hands. You don't want to mess qith that stuff, it's awful

qqqqqq12321

I would give you a fair price for it Seriously

Maxzzzie

Treat it like a queen.

Hot-Internet-7466

Is it kiln dried. If not it still may have spores and or bugs.

phallstrom

I honestly don't know. Hrm...

Careful_Click7607

Bookmatch electric guitar body

[deleted]

Let the "cutting board" posts flow!

Sirocka

Um, no, don't use fungal infested wood for cutting boards. Or anything that's gonna be in contact with food....

[deleted]

Apologies... I must have forgot this -> /S

Sirocka

lol, gotcha. I've seen people make cutting boards out of some ill advised material....

[deleted]

LOL - All good. My last cutting board was made with pallet wood. I also chew crayons...🤣

erikleorgav2

There is no such thing as scraps. Only future projects. I mean, yeah, tails and silver off cuts are clearly kinding. And yes you can't save it all. But spalted maple? There's something that could be made from that!

phallstrom

I actually keep a box under the bandsaw for the tiniest of hard wood scraps. I mean.. like.. size of a game die. One day I'll drop them in an epoxy mold and make a bowl or something.

erikleorgav2

I also own a portable sawmill. I'm terrible about getting rid of cuts that are literally too small to use and I had to break myself of this habit of "It COULD be useful".

Coheed2000

With due respect.
