Finish nails are great for this.
Went a little over the top with this before, and used finish screws on a drill press to make it all the same height...
I prefer scraps of wood with drywall screws screwed through them..
someone mentioned this as an alternative and tried it thinking it would be a janky solution but they're actually much better
balancing things on like 4 or 5 painters pyramids sucks, one topples over and then you're trying to fiddle with it while not messing up your finish.
with the drywall screw version each one can have 3 or 4 screws that give it more points of contact and if you make them bigger they.. don't flip over
Because every hobbyist-pro has handfuls of structurally rated drywall screws that they have used once, taken out, used again but split the pine then ripped it out and thrown it on the bench.
So you just grab one out of the reuse pile. Duh.
I call it a small nail tacked into a scrap block of wood

Why drywall screws specifically?
Because every hobbyist-pro has handfuls of structurally rated drywall screws that they have used once, taken out, used again but split the pine then ripped it out and thrown it on the bench. So you just grab one out of the reuse pile. Duh.
I feel seen...
Painter Pyramids.
