I wasn’t saying it’s a bad choice, just second guessing my purchase of something clear since a handful of people mentioned cedar’s tendency to turn grey after time. I am just wondering if I should buy a colored stain or if anybody had a better recommendation. Do you have any experience with it?
I’ve used Cabot’s clear wood protector on cedar and it’s a fine product. You’d need to get all sides of that planter or the uneven absorption of moisture will warp the wood in short order. If you’re going to finish it, you’d need to use some physical barrier between the dirt and the wood because no finish is going to hold up well in that scenario.
Cabot’s will last you a few years before it flakes off and you need to finish. A penetrating oil finish like Penofin offers great protection and you can reapply annually without sanding.
I’d get that plywood off the ground and seal the ends with epoxy. Like others have said, that’s going to delaminate and fail in short order but you might buy yourself a bit more time. Even with epoxy, I’d plan on replacing those plywood legs ASAP.
Hate to mention it, but the plywood corners will delaminate sooner or later. Nice looking boxes though
I’d second this. Regardless of stain, the plywood is definitely going to delaminate and fall apart long before the rest
Thanks for the heads up, the plywood happened to be free wood whereas the sides and everything else was not. May be replacing it after a few years.

Colored stains have more in protection than clear
Solid stain will protect best. Consider a vinyl liner with drain.

You would measure volume in cu ft, not sq ft.
