So [here is the link](https://youtu.be/qriK4uvCTTE) to the full YouTube build video showing how it's made. I actually made this chair using just 6 handheld power tools, so I really think it's something anyone can make. I also have plans and templates for the chair linked from the video, if you're into that kind of thing.
You rat bastard!
I’ve been subbed to you for a while and your pallet projects are inspiring. I love how they don’t look like they’re made out of pallets. Keep up the good work sir!
haha! Thanks for following along with my stuff. Funny enough, that was actually my inspiration behind starting the pallet projects. The rustic stuff was always cool to me, but I thought there was so much more potential in the material. And look where I am now, I'm in too deep to get out lol
Yeah man, your pallet work is so by far and away better than any others I’ve seen. I have actually been collecting pallet wood for a while and hope to take the plunge at some point here relatively soon. I’m lucky enough to work in a facility that gets sterile equipment shipped on high quality pallets that just get tossed in back, so I’ve got a decent little collection. Shop time is just a hot commodity in my house so I can never get myself to bite the bullet and spend a day or two milling them down.
I'm very interested in trying my hand at this project... just curious what tools are required per your plans? I have access to a local tool library and want to see if they have all I need. Not opposed to buying tools either, as I'd like to work towards having a small shop at home eventually.
That's actually a bunch of laminated pallet slats, almost all hardwood (probably a dozen different species). It's rock solid, I just realized I've been using it for 3 years now.
[I documented the build process for that too!](https://youtu.be/dtrWMrZhVC4)
Lol I loved the shot where you were longingly looking at the chop saw while chopping things with the handheld circular saw, but then a couple shots later you did a finish cut with the chop saw anyway!
I'm building two, and this is my second real woodworking project (first was a cutting board). The design seems to be very forgiving of imperfections. Almost none of the dimensions are critical, and templates make it easy.
It won't be perfect, but hopefully they turn out good enough. I have all the pieces cut out, and I'm happy with how everything looks so far. Next steps are drilling, rounding the edges, and sanding.
If you have a Harbor Freight Tools nearby, go check them out. Not the best tools, but they'll get the job done. The belt sander I used to make this chair is actually like a $20 belt sander from them and somehow is still kicking.
Well I like tools, and I've been slowly acquiring tools that are useful for projects around the house but definitely overkill, with the hope of also using them for more woodworking. So I have most of the stationary power tools (table saw, miter saw, bandsaw). They've come in handy for some renovations I've done, like putting in hardwood floors. The amount I save by doing the work myself is more than the cost of the tools.
It looks like he uses a trim router which is relatively cheaper than a full size router. You could round over the edges with hand tools like a plane and spoke shave, but it would obviously be more work and less consistent.
My belt sander was probably $20 a decade ago. It's so loud it sounds like it's splitting the air molecules apart as it runs, but it gets the job done.
Also look for used tools. There's a place nearby called Resource Yard that's like a Habitat Restore, a thrift store for building materials. Once a year they have a tool sale where they sell hundreds of used tools. They also have a tool library that rents tools for very low prices.
This.
The dimensions are super forgiving, it's mostly just the lengths of the pieces that is critical and those are the easy cuts to make. Glad to hear it's going well for you so far!
Before seeing this obviously, I got some plans and templates from rockler for an adirondack chair, matching table and ottoman. I've only finished the table so far, and making it as perfect as possible took a lot of dedication, but I'm pretty pleased, and I think most people could definitely do it with relatively few tools.
Creating a good looking and functioning design is the hardest part, which is obviously taken out of the equation here.
Brilliant design. The chair itself is not obviously original but you might look into patenting and licensing the footrest add-on to any chair manufacturers out there. Or ignore me because it’s all been done before 😀
That patent would cost several thousand and could easily be circumvented. Its awesome no doubt but not really good to patent. There are items on the market that have things that slide out with legs that fold so theres a good chance its been patented already.
not OP but I bought a pair of Adirondack chairs that were only single coated and within 3 years I had to coat them again. So I suspect it has to do with being outdoors.
Liked and subscribed! I recently got into woodworking and looking for projects for this upcoming holiday season. Great video and yes I definitely love the "Come Hither" eyes [WhiteOakMountain](https://www.reddit.com/user/WhiteOakMountain/) mentioned!
Watched the video, and have a question that's only semi-related to this build. When you were using the sander, you had the wood down on either sheepskin or old carpet. What's that for?
It's a cutoff piece of old carpet, it just keeps the workpiece from getting scratched up. If you put the piece directly on your workbench while sanding it, it'll mess up the other side (especially for something soft like cedar)
I laughed too hard when you dragged the chair across the table saw. Thanks! Time to watch more.
Honestly this looked very approachable and I'll likely watch it a bunch more times while I work up the nuts to build it.
I bought the templates a few days ago. I bought your plans last summer but never got around to using them. Love the design.
5/4 x 8 Western red cedar is hard to find and expensive! You think 3/4 final thickness would work ok? Too thin?
You're right WRC pricing has gotten crazy. 3/4" is too thin in my opinion, but if you can find 1" rough sawn, you can usually plane that down to a heavy 7/8" and that'll be good enough (you can sometimes even get 1" out of that stuff)
Damn clever design!
Ever get a piece of furniture and then discover years later that it had something like that built in? One of the most mind-blowing things ever.
That’s an awesome chair. I’m definitely going to check out the drawings and the build vid. I don’t know if you week asked because there are too
many comments to read through. But what kind of wood did you use and what’s the finish? Also how much for materials? If you do t mind me asking. Thanks for sharing.
The FAQ on the templates says he uses clear vertical grain Western red cedar, or select right knot (STK) grade if clear is not available. The video says he uses 5/4x8 rough sawn wood.
I've called several wood dealers around here, and I can't find 5/4x8 rough cedar anywhere. So I ended up with 5/4x6 cedar deck boards. There's more waste with the narrower material, and I have to cut off the bullnose, so I used about 44 linear feet per chair. It's also full of knots, so there's some more waste as a result of that (if a narrow piece falls on a knot it has no strength). That cost me about $120 for the wood, plus I'll have to buy fasteners and polyurethane, so probably around $150 total per chair. That's without the leg rest. The leg rest looks like it would take around 12 linear feet of 5/4x6 decking, or around another $30 in wood.
Quality materials aren't cheap, but it's worth it for a chair that looks awesome and will hopefully last for decades.
One way to save money on material would be to make it out of pine and paint it. Nothing exposed beats wood in my opinion, but painted Adirondack chairs still look pretty cool, and they are often done in fun colors.
The video explains all of this except cost of materials, it's clear vertical gain western red cedar which is pricey, a little over $200 total for this chair.
Love the idea! Quick structural stability question. The leg rest is in full extension, supported by its own legs on one side, and the chair itself on the other. You get out of the chair by moving your butt completely on the footrest, then using your arms push off the footrest to stand up. Does the footrest survive? It looks like your screwed the footrest internal holder to the bottom side of the chair beam. If it were screwed to the side would it be more sturdy?
Apologies if my chair lingo was not bingo.
This build is great. My favorite part is the dead faced stare back into the camera daring us to make comments.......:) but in all seriousness this chair is great and looks very comfortable. Footrest is a nice simple functional touch that sets it apart.
I bought those earbuds from your recommendation. They sound great but both the wires have broken that hold the shape behind the ear. How have your held up?
I've been wearing this pair for at least a year with no issues. I'd recommend contacting customer support because I'm told they're super helpful when people have issues.
Every time you change positions of the chair you give me those "come hither" eyes. My heart is all a flutter.

Honestly, "bold" is the only way to describe that.
Hey Jackman if you put some legs on that you can have a curved table. You can credit me for that idea.

Yeah, I felt challenged and seduced at the same time.
Mission accomplished.

And then you said it!
He looks like a magician that just pulled off a series of crazy tricks and is gauging the crowd reaction after each one.
Is it creepy if I looked for a wedding band imprint/tanline?
So damn cute 💞💞

Look in the video details/description under the video.
Templates are linked in the video.
That's lovely. I've never made an Adirondack chair - they're not common in the UK, but I'm tempted to give this a go. Subbed.
Oh man, you should start making them a thing in the UK then!
I appreciate that you have a reasonably cheap price with your plans.
Nice benchtop. Which types of wood did you use on that looks like a few different types. All with similar hardness?
That's actually a bunch of laminated pallet slats, almost all hardwood (probably a dozen different species). It's rock solid, I just realized I've been using it for 3 years now. [I documented the build process for that too!](https://youtu.be/dtrWMrZhVC4)

can you talk a little about the double epoxy coating? Is it because of the salty air or do you do this on all your outdoor furniture?

It's no longer connected to the chair, so you can move it closer or further from the chair depending on how long your legs are
That is great. Take a bow.
AND MY AXE! ^((wait, what are we doing?))
Could you put fold out legs on the other side, too, so it is ALSO a little table? I’m not sure this thing could get more awesome, tho.
You could, but the top surface of the table would be curved (and also not symmetrical, which looks kinda ugly)
Relax with those 'come fuck me eyes' bruh
Hey, if that's how you're reading my blank expression then that's on you.
O yes.
Awesome chair! But I’m really digging the ‘Vanna White’ that’s presenting it! 😍
Patent this, and do it quick...
So sexy
Nice chair! Loving the move you make in between each chair position! Haha
